Episode 186 - What We Talk About When We Talk About the Sweet Spot Mechanic In this game we talk about the sweet spot mechanic, which is kind of but not quite a jackpot mechanic and an efficiency puzzle! We try to define this term and discuss the games that fit, a conversation that takes us beyond the bounds of the cardboard playing surface. This topic came to us from Geoff Englestein's GameTek blog in the below-mentioned article. You can and should subscribe to the GameTek blog there! Some might argue that the Treaty of Versailles had a few holes that may or may not have been one of the many catalysts for the next war. So being the historians they are, Kiwi and bP have decided they can do better in the course of an afternoon. Join them this week as they play Versailles 1919 by Geoff Englestein and Mark Herman. Rev. Chelsey Hillyer joins us to chat about creating accessibility around board games so everyone is welcome to be themselves, find satisfaction with their game play, and empowered to have fun. How do board games and play in general create accessibility so everyone is welcome to be themselves? Games are partly about winning, but also about being satisfied with your game play and everyone being able to have a good time. We discuss ADHD-Inattentive and neurodiversity, play as protest, and games that create deep presence and community. We share thoughts on parenting, Geoff Englestein's book GameTek, play as a fundamental part of human life and a fundamental human right, play as a protest against hierarchy and monetary valuation, the films Life Is Beautiful and Jojo Rabbit, and we recommend the games Pandemic, No Thanks, Azul, A Gentle Rain, and Charterstone as particularly accessible games. Biologists at Tufts University, Douglas Blackiston and Michael Levin have created all programmable organisms called xenobots — golems dreamed in silicon and then written into flesh. The implications of their existence could spill from artificial-intelligence research to fundamental questions in biology and ethics. Jeff and Anthony discuss how these new entities came to be and what they could mean for the future. And new footage has revealed a trailing ribbon of conjoined tentacled clones sweeping the ocean off the coast of Australia. Known in some regions as the "long stringy stingy thingy", siphonophores blur the line between organ and organism. They somehow manage to be both at once. Anthony and Jeff decide if these is one creature and a series of connected ones, and how they contribute to our understanding of the bizarre ecosystem of the deep.
