Hey Now Cabalists, the Founders are back for another installment of your favorite 3-hour dose of insubordinate nonsense! Today the gang chats up a bunch of awesome games including Risk: Legacy, The Shores of Tripoli, Dwellings of Eldervale, What Do You Meme?, Survive Escape from Atlantis and Tidal Blades: Heroes of the Reef. Then we jump right into a feature review of Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps from Gale Force Nine. Tony T is on point yet again with the most astounding tabletop gaming news segment in the history of tabletop gaming media and the rest of the guys ruin it by cracking wise and pointing out all the mispronunciations. And the crew wraps up the show with another Short Topic Extravaganza featuring the topics of how to make a top 50 favorite games list, do we keep stats of our plays and do the Founders enjoy new games or old games better. Anyways we talk about Legacy board games, Risk: Legacy in particular. We also talk about the Cyberpunk: 2077 delay, and we talk about Scotland Yard but with Draculas!Voices:Spencer PeersonDave LarsonTony DionisioEditing by:Spencer Peerson Music by:Dave FesliyanCheck out his music at https://www.fesliyanstudios.comLike us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/BetaTestHumansFollow us on Twitter @BetaTestCastEmail us at BetaTestHumans@gmail.com

This week Brett and Walker visit the world of physical games and how these non-digital games have woven themselves into Brett and Walker's gaming lives. They discuss many titles including classics like D&D or Backgammon, new takes on classics such as Risk Legacy, and newer games like Betrayal: House on Haunted Hill. Board games offer their own unique experiences that compliment any video gamer's hobby. Physical games can also offer chances to bond with a non video game player through a gaming experience.Official Podcast Page: http://bit.ly/PUYSpodEmail the hosts at pickupyourstickspodcast@gmail.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/puyspodDiscord: https://discord.gg/Dp4jGJHSteam Curator Group: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/puyspodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pickupyoursticks/Music by Misha Zarins https://mekzvsbear.wixsite.com/mekzArt by Riley O’laughlin riley_olaughlin@ymail.com

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our discussion of Civilization III (and of the Civilization series generally). We talk a bit about the middle game generally, why it doesn't catch on with Brett as much, and especially address the layers of game play and how they interact. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Through the Medieval period Issues covered: converting members of the population to entertainers, lowering taxes instead, fighting overpopulation, filling out a tech tree to trigger the next age, bouncing off this game again and again, managing complexity, educating yourself with the Civilopedia, finding the decisions less interesting, lack of simulation pressure, having found a boring game and having less to worry about, fighting over every resource, having all the spice, cascading effects over resource distribution, thinking about how the AI might work, characteristics of nations and persons, thinking too hard about civilization breaks the game down a bit, the horrors of balancing, the benefits of iterating a franchise, running into the turn limit, the types of victories, a clash of simple systems, low complexity of any individual system, games of conflict and domination, turn-based combat and domination, putting faces to the civilizations, playing characters as caricature, marketing with Gandhi, personification and putting naming things, the pros and cons of having associations, competition games generally, the astonishing level of achievement here, generating little stories about your civilization, personalizing your board game, what do you bring into your game, visualizing your relationships with other civs, preferring "your" version of a game, playing games linearly but developing them out of order, interpreting the title (and possibly irony), how we teach history in America, sanitizing history, understanding causes, sitting back and evaluating rather than being in it, procedural rhetoric, mirroring it history, games in other areas that focus on different civilizational histories, getting to games. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Star Wars, Dune, Diplomacy, Risk, Fallout, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Phil Simms, The Osbornes, Dominion, Balance of Power, Chris Crawford, Mario Kart, Pandemic Legacy, Risk Legacy, X-COM, Rob Daviau, Matt Leacock, PRACTICE, Jeffool, Final Fantasy (series), Sam Thomas, Europa Universalis, Ester Olsen, MicroProse, The Aristocrats, Paradox Interactive, Persona 5, Ben "from Iowa" Zaugg, Day of the Tentacle, Tacoma. It's our anniversary - we've been doing this podcast thing for a whole year! To celebrate, we're doing an episode on legacy games, and as a special treat for you (and for us!), we are joined by a very special guest - Rob Daviau, the man behind the legacy game craze (and a lot of other great games besides)! In this episode: Rob tells us about the original inspirations behind Risk Legacy, the person who knew that Pandemic Legacy would be a trilogy before Season 1 was even published, and the brand new Machi Koro Legacy, available right now at Gen Con! We talk about some of Rob's non-Legacy games too, such as the forthcoming Return to Dark Tower! Joe offers such thoughtful gaming insights as "If you lose, you don't win" and "At the end, there's one winner, and that person wins." We learn how to play Six Degrees of Frank Branham. We discover that, thanks to Joe, we've been playing legacy games all along. Legacy games are susceptible to spoilers, but this is a spoiler-free episode. You can find some additional short files with spoiler content for various games here, but the main episode is safe for all (except for the occasional grownup word). Rob Daviau is a god amongst gamers. He is the originator of the Legacy game, designing such games as Risk Legacy, Pandemic Legacy, Betrayal Legacy, and a resume of board game design credits longer than a mile. He was kind enough to sit down with us and discuss his background, his interactive theater hobby, and his formalwear habits during air travel. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode: Risk Legacy, We Didn't Playtest This At All: Legacy, Pandemic Legacy: Season 1, Seafall, Charterstone, Fable System.
Legacy Games are all the rage! Well, like the 5 of them that exist. But Pandemic Legacy Season 1 was probably many player's first foray into Legacy games (though Risk Legacy was the original), and has caused quite a bit of controversy. We're joined by Joe Comings, a self-described convert to Legacy games, as we discuss why they work, what changed his mind about them, and to give a review of Pandemic Legacy Season 1, with spoilers from only the first few games. Why spoilers? If you're hesitant to try it yet, we want to give you some of the meat to tell you that it's worth trying! Spoilers are only in the second half of the episode, with clear warning. Hope you all enjoy!

This week we talk about the differences in Campaign and Legacy games, both as they relate to each other and as they relate to other games. Off Topic First we start off with announcements as always (Josh is back too). This is the last week of our current giveaway - so listen and enter! Chris is back to Kickstarting things again and we get challenged on whether you can get away with coming out as a spy in resistance. Finally Chris finds a way to sneak in some talk of Too Many Bones. On Topic Well we try and figure out whats the differences between a campaign game and a legacy game. I'm not sure we ever agree, but we do try. We also talk about some of our favorites, Pandemic Legacy, Risk Legacy, Gloomhaven, Arcadia Quest and we confess that we've never played Decent, but should.
We share memories about Risk and talk about the improvements on Risk Legacy. Sean talks about issues with fulfillment overseas with Kickstarter and dealing with postal companies.

As the episode numbers climb further into double digits the guys decide to change up the show format one more time. Back is a looser banter section where they talk about what fun things they've been up to and briefly chat about a few games they've played recently. From there your intrepid hosts set out on a new quest: To provide a more specific game review section! The target of this weeks quest is the team vs team game of submarine warfare: Captain Sonar! To start this new section, Zach runs through a loose description of the rules, then all 3 hosts chat about their experiences playing the game, and finally they all give their final verdict! Mike Hastings was raised in the frigid motor city of Michigan where a love for machines and a superhuman tolerance for cold temperatures was born. Early in adulthood, he headed West chasing the two-wheeled pursuits of mountain biking and motorcycle racing. He even indulged a momentary fling with Super Moto. Several crashes later, he still chases his two-wheeled passion through moto clubs and long distance riding trips. He and Jason discussed these pursuits one evening on Jason’s back patio shortly before being massacred in a game of Risk: Legacy.

Julien "Jules" Koetsch joins Keith Vincent, John Holt, and Mary Varn to discuss the next two picks from our "Better than the Original" theme. ___________ Segment 1: "Blowin' in the Wind" by Sam Cooke (1964) is better than "Blowin' in the Wind" by Bob Dylan (1963) Keith (earthlingkeith.com) contends that Sam Cooke's live rendition of "Blowin' in the Wind," from Sam Cooke at the Copa is better than Bob Dylan's original version off of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. The Peter, Paul and Mary version is the most financially successful of the time, and Dylan's is the most well known now. Cooke's Copa was one of his last releases while alive, he died later in the same year, 1964. Sam Cooke's album is also available on iTunes, Rdio, Spotify. As well as in hardcopy. Bob Dylan's album can be found digitally on iTunes, Rdio, Spotify. As well as in hardcopy. _________________ Segment 2: "Risk: Legacy" (2011) is better than "Risk" (1957) John (@lordjoho) proclaims that Risk: Legacy is better than the classic game of Risk. Legacy is built to be customized as you play, the board evolves over roughly 15 games. They encourage you to stick with the same group of up to 5 players. The classic version of Risk has been revised a few times, most notably in adding alternate win conditions and goals. Risk: Legacy has a loose Science Fiction theme, it isn't nearly as heavily themed as the excellent Risk: 2210. Risk: Legacy is available on Amazon, online boardgame retailers, and possibly as your local friendly game store. Risk is available in many versions at your local book, toy, or general store, as well as on Amazon. ______________________ You can follow us on twitter @newtoyoushow and you can leave comments down below! Friend of the show and returning guest Rob Daviau joins Rob and Julian to talk about his new game, Risk: Legacy. They talk about how Legacy uses unlocks and persistent changes to deepen the standard Risk experience. Daviau describes lessons learned during playtesting about how players learn games and fail to make good long-term decisions. Why have some gamers been so resistant to the changes in Legacy? Does Legacy suggest a line of development for board gaming? Is it all a nefarious plot to make people buy more games? Risk: Legacy is available right now at game stores, and on Amazon next week.
