Earlier this year GMT Games released a two-player board game called 'A Gest of Robin Hood'. I sat down with the game's designer to discuss how this game functions as a sort of introduction to the hobby of historical wargaming, the depth of research that went into the game, and what he's hoping people can get out of the game as well. You can follow Fred Serval on Blue Sky with @fredserval.bsky.socialOr via his YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@HomoLudens1871You can find out more about A Gest of Robin Hood on the GMT website or on Board Game Geek.Into the Greenwood is produced by Thaddeus Papke Theme music is by Plastic3For more from Into the Greenwood:www.instagram.com/intogreenwood/www.threads.net/@intogreenwoodbsky.app/profile/intogreenwood.bsky.socialwww.facebook.com/intogreenwoodTo support the podcast go to:www.patreon.com/IntoGreenwoodorwww.buymeacoffee.com/intogreenwoodOur selected charity: Trees, Water & Peopleintogreenwood@gmail.comSupport the show
The gang has finally reached the end of 1862 (in Virginia at least) with Ambrose Burnside's ill fated turn at the head of the Army of the Potomac, as depicted in the new hotness that is Mark Herman's Rebel Fury. It promises dynamic movement and a new take on ACW combat, all in a simple quick playing ruleset. As fans of the C3i game Gettysburg that Rebel Fury builds on, will Pierre and Stuart enjoy this new entry from a much beloved designer or will it go the way of Burnside and be demoted and shipped off to fight on another table?
In this episode of the Homo Ludens podcast, we bring you a collective review of Plantagenet, the latest game in Volko Ruhnke's Levy & Campaign Series, designed by Francisco Gradaille and published by GMT Games. Our Discord server members—supporters of the show—learned and played this intricate medieval wargame and now share their thoughts on the strategies, historical depth, and gameplay experience. Set during the Wars of the Roses, Plantagenet adds layers of political intrigue and shifting loyalties to the familiar Levy & Campaign system. We're Back to Berg baby! After a mixed experience crossing the mountains, the boys are trying one of Berg's takes on Antietam, arguably the most influential battle of the American Civil War. Will we like it more than GBACW? You can probably already guess!

This week, the panel digs into our recent game of Dominant Species! Dominant Species, designed by Chad Jensen, was first published by GMT Games in 2010. In 2011, it was nominated for the BoardGameGeek Golden Geek Award for Most Innovative and Best Thematic Game and won two Golden Geeks for Best Strategy Game and Game of the Year. Episode Summary: The panel begins by highlighting typical challenges with worker placement games, and how Dominant Species couples it with area majority. We discuss the different approaches to scoring points, discuss potential issues with scoring rules, and draw comparisons with other worker placement games. We touch briefly on the Dominance cards, which can drastically change the landscape of the board. We conclude as usual by giving out final thoughts on Dominant Species, including an idea or two how the game could be sped up. So get ready to evolve with us as we fight tooth and nail in our game of Dominant Species. This week I tell Julius all about the GMT Games title Banish the Snakes. You play as St. Patrick or some of the other saints that worked to convert Ireland to Christianity as the Roman Empire and Roman Britain and collapsed. This is a really interesting historical title that plays very similarly to a Pandemic but with the complexity taken up a notch or two. Banish the Snakes (BGG, GMT Games)

In this episode, we detour from miniatures to chat to Marc Rodrigue, Montreal-based designer of the award-winning French and Indian Wars boardgame, Bayonets and Tomahawks, published by GMT Games. We talk about Marc's abiding interest in the French and Indian War, and the design process that led to his game. Marc's also a FIW reenactor, and has some interesting insights to the period from portraying a soldier of the Franche de la marine. Marc's current projects include an interesting looking WW2 armour game, reflecting his love of tanks, and some other fascinating projects. After we said au revoir to Marc, James and I chatted about the ups and downs (and legalities) of 3D printing, getting ready for Hot Lead in less than two week's time, playing Napoleon in a tactical game, James' initial thoughts on Osprey's new SF rules, Xenos Rampant, and an early look at Sam Mustafa's Nimitz, along with some opinions as to why destroyers are cool. We take no time off for Boxing Day here at SVWAG, a day so named because according to the common law of the King (still feels weird saying that) citizens of the Commonwealth are permitted to punch someone in the face on this day only. It's like a pugilistic The Purge but with the metric system and occasional poutine. The news this week features a number of exemplary game titles. Many a stellar game has crossed our paths purely on the strength of its name, whereas others are so generic as to defy searching. Go ahead, find R on Board Game Geek, or the game Quest. Let us not, as the saying goes, hold the perfect in opposition to the good. We here at SVWAG always encourage the lowering of standards, which the hosts tend to do by their very presences--dragging down the average of any group of which they are a part. We're always on the lookout for new potential taglines here at SVWAG, as our earlier efforts "that one where the guy talks to that dude" and "we shout into a can so you don't have to" have been deemed insufficient. "We like it hard" was put forth by Walker, but the editorial staff are afraid it is apt to be misconstrued. "We weaponize children" was rejected for the opposite reason, namely that it might be correctly interpreted. Specificity tends to get us into trouble, which is why we have kept "a boardgaming podcast about boardgames" for as long as we have.1:04 AYURIS: Project: ELITE (Konstantinos Kokkinis, Marco Portugal, & Sotirios Tsantilas, CMON, 2020)Games Played Last Week:02:33 -Crusaders: Thy Will Be Done (Seth Jaffee, Tasty Minstrel, 2018)04:54 -Beyond the Sun (Dennis K. Around sixty million years ago on Earth, dinosaurs reigned supreme on land, but at sea, a giant struggle was still unfolding. Creatures were slowly adapting to the changes in their watery habitat and hoping to be victors in this fight for survival. The threat of a giant meteor striking the Earth was increasing all the time, so it was a race to become the Dominant Species: Marine by Chad Jensen from GMT Games. It's a star-studded eleganza extravaganza, featuring your two least-favourite SVWAG hosts giving you an incomplete capsule summary of a terrible year of great games. Of course, they neglected to play That One Game, of course, which means that all their observations are utterly useless, but how does that differentiate this episode from any other? This offering is more classy, however, as in a concession to the glitz and glamour of end-of-year shows, both hosts begrudgingly and uncharacteristically wear pants. (You might be asking--is that "pants" in the British sense or the Canadian sense? The answer is yes.)Games Played Last Week:02:50 -Fossilis (David Alberto Diaz, Kids Table BG, 2020)05:07 -In Too Deep (Josh Cappel & Daryl Chow, Burnt Island Games, 2021)10:17 -French Toast (Uncredited, Blue Beard Entertainment, 2021)12:06 -Magnate: The First City (James Naylor, Naylor Games, 2021)18:02 -Corrosion (Stefan Bauer, Capstone Games, 2021)20:35 -G.I. We tell you all about the game and our experience as well as touching on the history the game is presenting. We then go into the topic where we discuss abstracting games, and how that can change the perception, message, and general takeaway from a game of historical value. We end by telling you what we think would be a fun war game. Be sure to like, share, and subscribe!
