But work wasn't easy to come by. As he and his family struggled, his despair grew. He wondered if he should give up on his dreams of acting or find a steady job. He turned to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes. “Show me my way in life,” he vowed to the saint one night in a Detroit church, “and I will build you a shrine.” That prayer to St. Jude marked a pivotal moment in his life. Soon after, he began finding work, eventually becoming one of the biggest stars of radio, film and television in his day. And as one of the world's biggest celebrities, Danny used his fame to fulfill his vow to St. Jude Thaddeus and to change the lives of thousands of children and families with a unique research institute. Danny's shrine to St. Jude Thaddeus was originally to be a general children's hospital located somewhere in the south. Danny's mentor, Cardinal Samuel Stritch, recommended he look to Memphis, Tennessee, the cardinal's hometown. By 1955 Danny and a group of Memphis businessmen he'd rallied to build the hospital decided it should be more than a general children's hospital. At the time, the survival rate for childhood cancers was 20%, and for those with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) — the most common form of childhood cancer — only 4% of children would live Danny began raising money for his vision in the early 1950s. By 1955, the Memphis business leaders who'd joined his cause also began local fundraising efforts. Danny also wanted to get the word out across the country about what he was doing and enlist the support of everyone he could. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital opened its doors on February 4, 1962, based on Danny's dream that "no child should die in the dawn of life." Since then, we've made incredible strides in childhood cancer research. We've helped improve the survival rate of childhood cancer from 20% to 80%. And ALL, the disease with a virtual death sentence in 1962, now has a survival rate of 94 percent. So let's get right to the show and we are going to let our guests explain this exciting opportunity. So grab a pen and paper, and get ready to buy a ticket or more there's no limit to your new dream home.

Strap in as Laura recounts the scariest week of her life for Danielle, sharing the rollercoaster ride that was a full week's worth of unlocking scary parenting milestone experiences as Peanut battled multiple respiratory viruses and an especially gnarly case of croup. Multiple trips to the ER, overnight hospitalizations, an ambulance ride, the ever-present parental guilt of not being able to be in multiple places at the same time, and the importance of finding time and space to process the tough stuff in between the moments of chaos. Laura's story has a happy ending, but we can't help but think of the many families who can't say the same. Please consider donating to one of the foundations mentioned in the episode, for the countless families living through the waking nightmare that is having a sick baby! This week, Kim welcomes Lora Stearns, the Advisor of Area Development for the Carolinas at the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The two look back on the history of St. Jude, its mission to provide free treatment and support to children and their families, and the importance of funding for their groundbreaking research. Lora highlights the various creative outlets available to the children, such as music and art therapy, that help them process their emotions during their cancer journey. They discuss the incredible efforts of Memory Makers in giving back to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. They share how a card-making initiative was started for Valentine's Day and later extended to Christmas, where handwritten cards are made and sent to the kids at St. Jude. Many executives are asked by their boards to retain the services of a professional risk, resilience, and security firm that specializes in executive protection. The best ones find a way to become a part of the value proposition of the executive's personal and professional space. Many do this by integrating their staff and expertise with the executive's administrative and travel staff. The ultimate goal is to naturally embed the protective mindset within the organization and the executive. The alternative has been a pet peeve of mine since I began to service this community 21 years ago. Security is not overhead. It is essential to the fabric of the organization. It supports how people, perform roles, in a measurable process, using the tools the organization can provide with the express purpose to create organizational outcomes that create strategic value. If that process is constrained or disrupted by risk, the cascading erosion of value can occur with lightning speed. And velocity and efficacy are elemental to personal and professional value. I start with this as a primer to a conversation I had with the founders and operators of NannyGuards, a division of LeMareschal. Denida Grow saw the value in personal childcare (like the administrative assistants of executives), but a gap between the caregiver and the child's security created unnecessary risk. She responded by creating Nanny Guards. NannyGuards are nannies/mannies who have all the skills, posture, and attitude of any caregiver that looks after children. The training they receive prepares them to meet unexpected risks that could cause harm to the child in their care. They engage their client with the same professional approach to risk management as executive protection by assessing the needs of the client (business) and then the risks. Then they build processes and procedures around emergency management, disaster preparedness, route management and identification of risky offenders near to their routes and schools. We have a great conversation around this unique business model. And then we have the opportunity to witness the hearts of Chris and Denida Grow. They wanted their business to contribute to their industry with and through the sponsorship of the International Protective Security Board (IPSB), many other corporate sponsors, and a globally recognized children's research organization that would allow the servant leaders in their industry to unite together and generously give their expertise and wealth to serve the greater good of the community. They announced BodyGuards for Kids, a virtual online learning event on March 18-19, 2023 featuring top subject matter experts donating their time and expertise to sharing research and skills needed to protect human and material assets around the world. Every one of the speakers is donating their time and knowledge free of charge. The entrance fees, the corporate gifts, and the sponsorship revenue is 100% donated to St Jude Children's Research Hospital. St. Jude is not only known for its acclaimed research, but also its fully paid child and family care. It applies 82% of all monies collected to its mission one of the top-rated non-profits in the world. I can see all elements of the security ecosystem pitching in at some level to this wonderful cause. Consultants, service providers, manufacturers, integrators, and chief security officers and their teams. This podcast is for you. If we had100 companies give $1,000 or more, and 200 executives give $50 or more, we could all send St. Jude a gift of immeasurable value from an industry that is known as stewards of care around the world. Thank you Chris and Denida for a Great Conversation.

On February 4, 1962, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital opened its doors in Memphis, TN with a promise to help victims of childhood cancer regardless of race, religion, or national origin. Since then the hospital has treated thousands of children from all over the world, and has played a vital role in increasing the survival rate of children diagnosed with cancer to more than 80%. And in more than five decades of operation, St. Jude has provided its services to children and their families for free. As the CEO of St. Jude's fundraising arm (ALSAC) and the son of one of its founders, Richard Shadyac knows a thing or two about the past and present of St. Jude Hospital. In our conversation he explains the positive impact that St. Jude Hospital has had across the world and how actor Danny Thomas' promise to the patron saint of lost causes became a reality. This is a rebroadcast of RTN #31, which originally aired on November 23, 2016. This rebroadcast was edited by Ben Sawyer.

"To live will be an awfully big adventure." -Peter Pan And to live well, is even better. Sometimes it might feel like the world is coming down all around you and you can barely breathe. We can get so wrapped up in our own journey, or life, that we forget that there are others out there hurting and dealing with their own struggles. There are people who don't know if they can make it one more day, are in so much pain, or ready to give up because they feel alone and unseen. That's where I want to take you today. No matter what you may be going through there is someone out there who is in need and probably worse off than you. Maybe they feel they have no one to talk to or rely on. Maybe they are in so much pain that it has become unbearable to deal with. Maybe they got yet another piece of bad news that is pushing them to their limits. This is where we can come in and help ourselves while helping others. I have said it before and I'll say it again, if I sit around thinking of everything that feels painful or uncomfortable in my own life or spend time dwelling on what I can't do then I am going to find myself throwing a pity party. This, no one wants to see. And I can't say that I'm truly living if I approach life like this. What I CAN do is reach out to friends, family, neighbors, who are in need of a friend or someone to talk to and let them know I care, and that I am there for them. I could send a note, a text, take them a coffee or lunch. Sometimes, just taking time out of our busy days, could be what saves someone that day. You see, we have become a society that has become so busy in our own lives, wrapped up in our own problems, it has become every man/woman for themselves, and it's hurting us. When I decided to amputate, sure I had my own goals about how I'd bounce back and become active, but I also wanted to make sure I was helping someone else along the way. I worked with St Jude Children's Research Hospital, and Range Of Motion Project these past 3 years. What I found by fundraising and being actively involved with these groups was that it lifted me up, too! I found a purpose outside of my own life, helping others. What an amazing feeling this was...so I continued to help. Then I started hearing from people that were struggling to wear their prosthesis, so I started calling and talking with them and making videos of what it's like to start a new activity, as an amputee, and being transparent about my own struggles. People just want to be seen, to not feel alone in this life. Life is a big adventure, and to live it well is an even bigger adventure. One worth the journey, the heartache and the pain we sometimes feel. "All the world is made of Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust." -Peter Pan May you be someone's "pixie dust" this week. See how you can be, below.⬇️ This week, reach out to someone that may need a friend. Maybe it's a neighbor, an old friend, or a family member. Touch base with them. Send a text, and email, pick up the phone and call them, invite them for coffee or lunch. Try to connect with someone each day until we meet again next week. You may be surprised what this will also do for you. Sometimes when we put aside our own struggles to help someone else, we benefit more than we can even imagine. Be someone's pixie dust this week, and watch how your life changes as you do. As always: Be Healthy, Be Happy, Be YOU!! Much love, Angie
