Chris Cohen is a producer, songwriter, and a multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles, California. He has released several solo records, is a founding member of The Curtains and was the guitarist for Deerhoof from 2002-2006. He has also done production and session work for the likes of Weyes Blood, Kurt Vile, Le Ren, and Marina Allen. His new record, Paint A Room, is due out on July 12th via Hardly Art Records. Chris tells us how he grew up as a lonely punker in Los Angeles, what sparked his interest in music and why no-one has ever heard his first band, The Blocks. He talks about a show in a Santa Cruz basement in the 90's that set in motion a life in music and why a flexibility between instruments guides his journey. We learn why Milton Nascimento is his musical hero, what he learned about producing recording Paint A Room and we hear a couple new tunes. Caution - "To Decide" a 2022 single on Hardly Art. Last year, local label Hardly Art Records celebrated its 15th anniversary by releasing 15 new singles from some of their favorite artists. They closed out the series back in December with this release from the duo Caution. Songwriters Cash Langdon and Nora Button formed the pairing in 2019, after departing the DC-based power-pop group Saturday Night. With Langdon relocating to Alabama and Button in Minnesota, they collaborated by sending files back and forth online. For today's Song of the Day, Langdon shares, "The initial demo of ‘To Decide' was created January 1st of 2022. The cold darkness of Minneapolis winter had pervaded my mood. The lyrics confront an inability to experience meaning and connection as well as a wavering between fear and acceptance of ephemerality." "All the time in the world is too much pressure."Shana Cleveland of La Luz prefers a good deadline when she writes songs. And with a toddler in the house, her day is nothing but deadlines, which are also known as When Your Child Wakes From Their Nap. If you're an artist like Cleveland, the best time to write is nap time. (We have four kids, so I know the feeling.) She discovered her knack for writing in those precious moments once she became a parent. "I can write just as many songs now in a much shorter period," Cleveland told me. And when she writes, she likes to sit outside in an office chair.Cleveland's new solo album is called Manzanita, out March 10 on Hardly Art Records. It is amazing. Really. And I'm a big fan of La Luz, so this was a lot of fun.
I had Jess Sylvester on to discuss the stand-alone Marinero single, "Last Chance", released via Hardly Art Records. (Theme song by Honor Nezzo)

Nate Amos (Water From Your Eyes) & Lily Konigsberg (Palberta) have come together to form My Idea! The duo pulled up to My Little Underground to talk up their debut EP, 'That's My Idea' on Hardly Art Records. Nate and Lily reveal their future plans for the group such as a full length album, a possible country album as well as a tour! Both Nate and Lily have other projects that have albums released or have one on they way in 2021. Nate is one half of Water From Your Eyes with a new album, 'Structure' out 8/27 and Lily already released an album with Palberta this year in 'Palberta 5000'. The Endless Bummer podcast is back from summer break! Mike interviews a super talented musician from the land where GTA V takes place, it's Colleen Green! Chill hard while Mike and Colleen chat about our mutual love of the Descendents, Jeff's birfday, and positivity! Also, important to note! You can catch Endless Bummer on both Soundcloud and iTunes on the last Wednesday of each month from here on out. Maybe that'll bring about some better production value? But no promises. I'm still doing all of this all on my phone. Catch all of the cool shit that Colleen Green is doing on Facebook (facebook.com/colleengreen420) and get her new album "I Want to Grow Up" on Hardly Art Records. The song I used on today's show is Colleen's cover of blink-182's "M+M's". Way gnar.
