We had the pleasure of interviewing Lyn Lapid over Zoom video!Gold-Certified singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Lyn Lapid releases her long-awaited debut album, BUZZKILL, via Mercury Records—listen HERE. When it comes to infidelity: can we have our cake and eat it too? In the following two songs, written by the incomparable Don Covay, this theme is explored. The two men narrating these tales of inconstancy are in turmoil - one cheater feels guilty, while the other betrayer is suffering from hurt pride - because his woman is playing the same game. The soulful bard who created these parables of marital strife covers the gamut here: in the first you'll hear the voice of the creator himself, Mr. Covay, on a special alternate track of “I Was Checking Out While She Was Checking in”; the second song, “I Stole Some Love” features one of his best interpreters, Peter Wolf, of the J. Geils Band.Donald James Randolph, aka Don Covay aka “Superdude” left us in 2015 with a legacy of pungent excavations of the human psyche, often delivered with toe tapping, humorous perfection. Although he was a charismatic performer in his own right, he was known predominantly as a songwriter with an unerring instinct for hits. Starting out in the fifties as a chauffeur and opening act for Little Richard, Covay went on to pen a raft of chart toppers such as Mercy Mercy (recorded by the Stones), See Saw, and Chain of Fools, for which Aretha Franklin won a Grammy. But it was in '72, doubling as an A&R man for Mercury Records, that Don hit performing pay dirt with “Superdude,” which contained the following song-monologue, which we are honored to present here with this alternate take, where the singer ruminates on the irony of his unique situation.In '92, Don suffered a stroke, and Ronnie Wood of the Faces and the Stones, produced a tribute album entitled “Back to the Streets” which contained the Covay classic “I Stole Some Love,” delivered here with characteristic swagger by the one and only Peter Wolf - former front man for the J. Geils Band. 79 years old and still going strong, the ex late night DJ “Woofa Goofa”, turned undeniable Rock Star and raconteur, has recently delivered an engrossing memoir “Waiting on the Man: Artists, Poets, Drifters, Grifters, and Goddesses” about his life's journey, and the iconic artists he's encountered along the way- starting with his stint studying art at Tufts University, and rooming with David Lynch. (He was also married to Faye Dunaway for five years)…, so he knows a lot about a lot of stuff, including failed romance. And, on this cut, his tortured vocal attests to the emotional vise he's caught in.

The great Canadian born pianist/composer and Jazz Master Oscar Emmanual Peterson was born in Montreal on August 15,1925 and passed away at his home in Mississauga, Ontario on December 23,2007 after a long career and receiving just about every honor Canada could bestow on this artist. The Jazz Show is proud to present "The Canadiana Suite" an 8 movement suite composed in honor of the country of his birth and performed by his long standing Trio with the incomparable Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums and of course Oscar Peterson on piano.. Grammy-nominated American recording artist Joan Osborne joins Everything Fab Four to talk about hearing “Revolution 9” at a makeout party and how her music career began. Osborne moved to New York City to attend film school at NYU in the late 1980s, dropping out after becoming involved in the city's downtown music scene. In 1991, Osborne formed her own record label Womanly Hips, releasing her first album Soul Show: Live at Delta 88. She later signed with Mercury Records, and in 1995 she made her major label debut with the album Relish, which reached the Top 10 on the back of “One of Us,” an international hit that propelled Osborne to stardom. Osborne has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards, and has performed duets with such icons as Luciano Pavarotti, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Patti Smith, Emmylou Harris, and Isaac Hayes. She has toured with Mavis Staples, the post-Jerry Garcia Grateful Dead, and Motown's Funk Brothers, while also performing for the Dalai Lama at his monastery in Dharmsala, India. She also regularly records and performs with Trigger Happy, founded by Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman. The judges at that year's festival included Henry Mancini and Quincy Jones. James carried away the festival's top prizes and formed a lasting relationship with Quincy Jones — who signed James to Mercury Records and produced his debut album the following year. James will share his memories of the festival, and Cultural Manifesto host Kyle Long will share a rare lost recording of James' 1962 performance. James will also discuss his collaboration with Indianapolis jazz legend Freddie Hubbard, and offer his thoughts on the use of his music in sampling.

Sally has had quite the varied career from being the first female A&R at Mercury Records, taking trips to San Fransisco to scout artists to running her own record label from her kitchen table and later studying for her Law Masters.We discuss the key differences that Sally found in her experiences in the DIY scene and at major labels. Her role as an Artist Manager; shifting records and remixes for dance acts and how the title and responsibilities have changed. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Ed Eckstine, son of singer Billy Eckstine and actress/model Carolle Drake. Our conversation with Ed was fun, fascinating, edifying and above all, full of stories of his life as the child of a celebrity but also his own career in the music industry. Our only regret was not keeping Ed for another 90 minutes because he has stories for days. We barely scratched the surface. Part two is a must. Many of us only know Billy Eckstine as a jazz & pop singer whose baritone voice and smooth delivery made him one of the most in-demand singers from the 1930s well into the 1950s. But he also was a guitar player, trumpet player and this Billy Eckstine & his Orchestra was the first Bebop Big Band and his players and vocalists were a who's who of Jazz - Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Sarah Vaughan, Pearl Bailey, and Lena Horne all were part of the band in the 1950s. By 1950, his popularity rivaled Sinatra - which as you will hear wasn't a rivalry at all between these two friends. It was Eckstine's talent as well as his good looks and dapper attire that made him perhaps the first black entertainer to become a crossover star in the segregated 1950s America. But as we learn from our conversation with Ed, one photo in a major American magazine essentially put an end to all that in the must ugly and vile way possible. But to hear Ed tell it, this terrible incident was a blessing in disguise as it opened up doors for him outside America and made him an international star, touring well into the 1980s in Europe, Australia and Japan. Our conversation with Ed also focused on his own career in the music industry that took him from journalist to publicist to head of Quincy Jones Qwest Productions to stints at Polygram, Arista and as the President of Mercury Records. As Nabil Ayers in the New York Times said, “Eckstine's story is unique because he was the first black person to be let in — to be allowed by the predominantly white music industry to helm one of its largest entities.” This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story. We brought Lance in to talk about the incredible opportunities available to local citizens and even uncovered the history of his three year stint touring the nation with Mercury Records signed band Twister Alley. They were signed artists at the same time as Vince Gill and Reba!
By the time Bachman Turner Overdrive were ready to record their third album, Not Fragile, Randy Bachman had sent demo tapes to almost two dozen record labels, all met with rejection letters. Finally, a twist of fate led to inking a contract with Mercury Records…but they were told they were one song short of “that magic element” the label thought they needed for the album.
