Think about the last thing you almost bought and did not. You picked it up, you looked at it, you put it back down. You had a reason for choosing one item over its competitors, and you know exactly what it was. Did anybody ever ask you why you didn't choose the loser? Of course not. And somebody did the same thing to you this week. Something you made, or wrote, or suggested. An idea you put into a meeting that got a polite nod and then went nowhere. They considered it, decided against it, and you never found out the real reason. Almost everything that comes back to you comes from the people who said yes. Inside a business, the machinery makes that official. Satisfaction surveys go to people who have bought. Reviews come from people who have bought. The customer list is a list of people who have bought. The one who put it back down is invisible to all of it, and that person is holding the answer. So, where do you point a question to reach somebody who is not there? Last week, we took a question apart and rebuilt it. But a well-made question aimed at the wrong thing comes back empty. Where you point a question is the other half of the skill. Forty-two cards of Killer Questions A killer question is one that has been tested and proven to spark ideas beyond the obvious. The name comes from the old phrase "killer app," where "killer" meant standout, not lethal. I built this collection of questions the slow way. I designed structured tests into my innovation workshops, which I was running: specific questions put to specific groups, and a record of what each produced. The rule for keeping a question was that it had to trigger something in that room. Did somebody walk out seeing their customer, their product, or the way they work differently than when they walked in? If nothing moved, the question was cut. If there was a good idea underneath one and I had simply worded it badly, I rewrote it and ran it again in another workshop. There were hundreds of questions, and most did not survive. Forty-two did. When I sorted the survivors, they fell into three groups. Not by subject. By where they aim your thinking.  Three places to aim Every question in the deck points to one of three things. Who, what, and how. WHO is the person or organization who will benefit from what you make. Usually, your customer, though the gap between "usually" and "always" is where a lot of new business hides. WHAT is the product, the service, the solution that creates the value for the WHO. HOW is the way your organization builds, delivers, and supports the WHAT for the WHO. Three places an idea can come from, and the questions exist to send you into each one on purpose rather than by accident. The cards all say "product." Read that as whatever you make for somebody else. A service counts. So does a proposal you hand to your boss. Thirteen of my cards aim at WHO. Thirteen at WHAT. Sixteen at HOW. That split was never a plan. It is where the questions that kept surviving pointed, and eventually, I stopped arguing with it. WHO What are your unshakable beliefs about what your customers want? The phone companies believed their customers wanted reliability above all else, and they were right. For a century, they built toward 99.999 percent uptime. A dial tone that worked in a storm, in a power failure, always. Then somebody turned that belief over and looked at it with no assumptions about what the customer wanted. Where were there people who would give up call quality for something else? That is the question that led to voice over IP, a phone call carried over the internet. In the early days, it sounded terrible. Calls dropped. By the standard the old industry had spent a century perfecting, VoIP was not a serious product. But underneath it sat an idea nobody in that industry had allowed themselves to consider: that many people would trade call quality for price and mobility, and would do so happily. They did. That market opportunity existed before anyone built it, waiting for someone willing to challenge the old standard on its head.  WHAT What is surprisingly inconvenient about my product? It does not ask whether the product is good. Your team will defend that all day, and they will be partly right, which will only make the conversation worse. Surprisingly inconvenient means some part of using your product that nobody inside your company has ever seen a real person struggle with. The fifteen minutes with the instructions. The step everyone on your team skips automatically because they built the thing. On the back of that card sits the shortest useful question I own: "Do you use your own product yourself?" Hold on to this one. In a few minutes, it turns up at a Best Buy, and the strange part is that I wasn't aiming at it when I found it. HOW What do people not like about the buying experience for my product? For the whole time I was CTO at HP, I spent nearly every Saturday in a Best Buy. While traveling, I found a local electronics store in whatever country I was in. I was not shopping. I was standing in the aisle watching strangers choose, because this question has no other answer. You cannot survey somebody who did not buy.  My family called it my "digital stalking". My kids would have done almost anything else rather than be seen with me in a Best Buy on a Saturday. When somebody picked up a competitor's product and headed for the checkout, I would walk over, introduce myself, and ask what made them choose that one. I did it long enough that the sales staff around Silicon Valley knew me, and would change how they talked to a customer if they saw me standing there. Stay somewhere long enough, and you stop being an observer. You influence what you are measuring. Then came the Saturday that changed a product. A customer set down an HP laptop and bought a competitor's. I asked him why. He told me he could not see the keys. This was during the stretch when every laptop was going aluminum, and somebody in our laptop group had given ours a chrome-looking keyboard. High gloss. On a store shelf, it looked expensive, which is exactly what it was designed to do. It also meant that anyone whose eyesight had started to go could not read the letters on it. Sales on that product had been running under plan, and nothing in the data said why. We changed the keyboard back to matte black with high contrast white lettering. Sales went up on that one change. No survey would have revealed the issue. By the time he told me, he was already somebody else's customer. Notice what that question actually turned up. I went into the store carrying a HOW question about the buying experience. What came back was a WHAT answer, something surprisingly. Inconvenient about the product itself. You choose where to aim. You do not choose where the answer comes from. Testing for Great Questions How do you find and test great questions? Ask the question, then watch what happens in the next four seconds. If the room goes quiet, and then somebody says, "Hang on," you are holding a good one. That pause is the sound of a person arriving somewhere they have not been. You just unleashed a great question. If someone answers immediately and confidently, the question isn't that great. A fast answer means you aimed where the team has already been, and they are reciting. I threw away hundreds that way and got down to the questions that caused impact. Practice Exercise  Take a decision you are facing this month and give it ninety minutes. Start with whichever of the three you are least comfortable with, which for most people is HOW. Take a question from it at random. Do not hunt for the one you like, because the one you like is the one you have already answered. Set a timer for thirty minutes and write down every idea that question produces. No judging, no editing, just quantity. Then do the same thing with a question aimed at your customer, and again with one aimed at the product. When you have worked through all three, read back over everything and pick the best three ideas to start on. That is how you run it on your own. There is a whole lot of worrying, waiting and wondering going on. After taking something he rarely takes—a real vacation—Stan Hustad returned to Inconvenient Ideas with five days away from television, computers and the daily digital noise. The occasion was a significant wedding anniversary, celebrated with his wife, Karen, along the North Carolina coast. It also came after a difficult season marked by loss, uncertainty and reminders that life can change very quickly. Perhaps that is why a few days away produced something more valuable than rest: perspective. Stan returned not pretending that the world had suddenly become easier, but recognizing that, despite difficulties, obstacles and a few genuinely frightening possibilities, he was still living in what he calls a POA—a Place of Opportunity. And then he turned the television and computer back on. Welcome back to the world of worrying. Worrying, Waiting, Wondering—and Wishing Stan noticed four activities consuming an extraordinary amount of human energy: Worrying. Waiting. Wondering. Wishing. People worry about their jobs. They wait to see what happens next. They wonder what artificial intelligence will do to their profession. And they wish somebody—or something—would make the uncertainty go away. But wishing is not a business strategy. Worrying is not a career plan. And waiting for the world to become predictable may require a very long wait. The more useful question is: What can you create? That question becomes especially important when so many people feel they are reacting to life rather than creating it. Certainly, much of life is outside anyone's control. But there remains an enormous difference between admitting that reality and surrendering one's ability to act. That distinction may become one of the essential survival skills of the AI age. What Is Real? Artificial intelligence introduces another inconvenient question: What is real? Stan has encountered videos, music, images and performances that seemed completely authentic—until closer examination raised another possibility. Perhaps they weren't. AI is rapidly moving toward a point where ordinary viewers and listeners may have difficulty determining whether something was created by a human being, a machine, or some collaboration between the two. Stan describes the strange sensation perfectly: Sometimes something can seem too fake to be real—and too real to be fake. That changes the questions we may have to ask. Instead of simply asking, "Is it real?" perhaps increasingly we will also ask: Is it true? Is it good? Is it useful? Is it helpful? Is it beautiful? Does it make life better—or worse? That is an inconvenient idea indeed. Even the new Inconvenient Ideas studio provides a playful example. The glowing neon-style sign, the broadcast environment and the visual presentation can now be created with AI assistance. Is the neon sign "real"? Well, you're looking at it. And perhaps the more useful question is whether it helps Stan communicate an idea worth hearing. Become an Author of Ideas Stan also makes a personal confession. He has spent nearly half a century as a broadcaster and communicator. He talks. He teaches. He coaches. He interviews. And perhaps most importantly, he continually comes up with ideas. But traditional writing has never necessarily been his greatest strength. AI has helped him recognize a different possibility: Maybe he is not primarily an author who writes. Maybe he is an Author of Ideas. That changes the relationship with artificial intelligence. The human being supplies experience, judgment, imagination, conviction, stories and ideas. AI can help organize, edit, develop and distribute them. In that arrangement, AI does not necessarily replace the human creator. It can multiply the creator. And that may be one of the great opportunities of this technological revolution. But Beware of Trojan Horses Every gift is not necessarily good for you. The ancient Trojans learned that lesson the hard way. Artificial intelligence may become one of the greatest productivity tools ever created. It may also eliminate jobs, disrupt professions, destroy established business models and make some previously valuable skills considerably less valuable. Both realities can be true. The appropriate response, therefore, is neither blind enthusiasm nor paralyzing fear. It is preparation. Create Your Own Personal Economy Here Stan reaches the central challenge of the program. In an increasingly unpredictable economy, people should learn how to create their own personal economy. That does not mean everyone must quit a job tomorrow morning and launch a company by lunchtime. It means learning to think entrepreneurially. Can you recognize an opportunity? Can you solve a problem? Can you create something useful? Can you communicate its value? Can you develop relationships? Can you serve customers? Can you adapt when technology changes the rules? And can you create another source of usefulness and income when an old one disappears? Those questions are becoming important whether someone is 22, 42, 62—or 82. Everyone Is Also Becoming a Broadcaster There is another skill Stan believes people increasingly need. They need to learn how to communicate through modern media. You may never have a radio program. You may never call yourself a podcaster. You may never dream of becoming a YouTube personality. But we live in a mass-media marketing world. At some point, most professionals, entrepreneurs, leaders and creators will need to become comfortable behind a microphone, in front of a camera, on a screen or communicating through digital media. That makes broadcasting no longer merely a profession. It is becoming a life and business skill. The Four People We May Need to Become Stan's challenge can be reduced to four roles worth developing in this new world: Become an Entrepreneur. Learn to recognize opportunities, create value and build your own personal economy. Become a Broadcaster. Learn to communicate clearly, confidently and persuasively through modern media. Become a Transformer. Develop the ability to change yourself, your work and perhaps the lives of people around you. Become an Author of Ideas. Bring distinctly human experience, imagination, wisdom and judgment to AI tools capable of helping those ideas travel farther and faster. None of this guarantees an easy future. There will still be plenty to worry about. But perhaps there will be considerably less to fear. THINGS TO REMEMBER • Worry is information, not instruction. Fear may tell you that something deserves attention. It doesn't necessarily tell you what to do. • AI is both opportunity and disruption. Refusing to acknowledge either side leaves you unprepared. • Your ideas still matter. AI can generate words, pictures and possibilities, but human experience, judgment, character and wisdom remain extraordinarily valuable. • Entrepreneurship is becoming a basic life skill. You don't necessarily need to own a company to learn how to create value. • Broadcasting is becoming a basic communication skill. The ability to speak effectively through microphones, cameras and digital media will increasingly matter. • Transformation requires action. Waiting for certainty may simply mean waiting forever. THINGS TO SHARE Ask someone you care about: "If your present job disappeared because of AI, what useful thing could you create, teach, communicate or sell?" Then ask a second question: "What could AI help you do that you could not realistically have done five years ago?" Those two questions may start a far more productive conversation than another hour of worrying about artificial intelligence. THINGS TO TAKE NOTE OF Pay attention this week to the places where AI is already changing your life. Notice what it does extraordinarily well. Notice where it makes mistakes. Notice what frightens you. But especially notice where it gives you new capabilities. Instead of merely asking, "What will AI do to me?" begin asking: "What can I now do with AI that I could never do before?" That is the entrepreneur's question. THINGS TO DO Choose one idea you have been postponing. Write it down—or speak it into your phone. Use AI to help organize it. Turn it into something tangible: an article, presentation, proposal, podcast, video, course, business idea or conversation. Then put it into the world. Don't merely worry. Don't merely wait. Don't merely wonder. And don't merely wish. Create. THE INCONVENIENT CHALLENGE The AI digital world will undoubtedly produce disruption. Some careers will disappear. Others will change dramatically. New professions will emerge that hardly anyone can describe today. So the goal cannot be to make the future perfectly safe. The goal is to become the kind of person who is increasingly capable of meeting it. Stan Hustad has spent decades as an entrepreneur, broadcaster, communicator and coach. Today he is helping people learn how to become entrepreneurs, world-class broadcasters, transformational thinkers and Authors of Ideas who can work intelligently with artificial intelligence rather than merely worry about what it might do to them. This presentation examines the growing tension between the sovereignty of nation-states and the expanding ideological and institutional pressure exerted by dominant left-liberal circles in Europe. It begins with the question of why Poland—particularly during the conservative governments of 2015–2023—became one of the primary targets of political and economic pressure from the central institutions of the European Union. At the heart of this conflict lies a fundamental clash of visions of the state and the law. On one side stands the model of a sovereign state grounded in its constitution, democratic legitimacy within the nation-state, and the Christian roots of European civilization, committed to protecting the family and the welfare of children. On the other side is the project of an increasingly centralized Europe, in which law is used as a tool to advance a harmful ideological agenda—ranging from radical woke doctrines and coercive net-zero policies to the mass relocation of culturally incompatible migrants—while simultaneously serving as an instrument of political pressure on member states. This tension is particularly visible in disputes concerning family law and the protection of children, where Poland under previous conservative administration —in cooperation with Hungary—resisted attempts to ideologically reshape these areas of European law. The presentation also addresses the growing phenomenon of lawfare in Poland after 2023, namely the use of legal mechanisms and state institutions as instruments of political repression against the conservative opposition. Marcin Romanowski is a Polish lawyer, academic, and Member of the Polish Parliament. He holds a PhD in law from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and an LL.M. from the University of Regensburg. Telling our stories to ourselves helps us understand who we are, make sense of the circumstances of our lives, find meaning in “courageous perseverance in the face of impossible odds.“ You know what I'm talking about. What are you afraid of? Storytelling is about being brave enough, vulnerable enough, authentic enough to face our story, to share our story and if done well will invite our listeners to care. When we share our misfortunes with humor, confidence and ease we can lift others. “Each One Lift One” is the way we've been carried along so that we can do the same for someone else. The study we've been waiting for is finally here! The head of infectious disease, Dr. Marcus Servos, at Henry Ford Health conducted a retrospective study of vaccinated children v. unvaccinated children to document their health outcomes. He promised that he would publish the results but then decided not to. Why not? The answer may have to do with the "inconvenient" results of the study. They did not confirm the expectations of the pro-vaccine Dr. Zervos. But Del Bigtree, the CEO of ICAN (Informed Consent Action Network)and host of The HighWire, decided to get the results out to the world through the film "An Inconvenient Study". As Executive Producer, Del focused on the very results that Dr. Zervos did not want revealed. There were statistically significant better health outcomes for the unvaccinated children over the vaccinated. In this conversation, Del tells us what led up to the study being conducted and why he decided to secretly record conversations with the doctor who did not want to publish it.
