Host Tiokasin Ghosthorse's thoughts on "sustainability" with a mix of music that fits the theme. "How is your heart? How is your mind? How is your body and how is your body treating you? How is life treating you? Or are you treating your life? I wonder about this word "sustainability." To me it's "sustain-ability" to live with earth. Our mind is, of course, gathering information from all points and not one linear beginning and ending." - Tiokasin GhosthorseProduction Credits:Tiokasin Ghosthorse (Lakota), Host and Executive ProducerLiz Hill (Red Lake Ojibwe), ProducerOrlando DuPont, Radio Kingston Studio EngineerMusic Selections:1. Let Us Know What You Think of the Show!Date: April 30, 2025Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioS8: E5: Lorraine Lewis - (Femme Fatale / Vixen) - Sunset Strip SurvivorSHOW SUMMARY:From jumping out of classroom windows in Albuquerque to commanding stages worldwide, Lorraine Lewis embodies the fearless spirit of rock 'n' roll in its purest form. In this candid, high-energy conversation, the former Femme Fatale and Vixen vocalist pulls back the curtain on her remarkable musical journey that began with Linda Ronstadt covers in local bands and led to the glitz and mayhem of the Sunset Strip during hair metal's heyday. With disarming honesty, Lorraine recounts how she assembled Femme Fatale through sheer force of will, sharing both the exhilaration of being signed to MCA Records and the frustrations of never quite reaching the platinum-selling status she envisioned. Her reflections on why some bands exploded while others stalled reveal the complex interplay of talent, timing, and industry support that defined the era. The conversation takes unexpected turns as Lorraine discusses her recent collaboration with Foreigner's Lou Graham (a dream thirty years in the making), her successful career as a television casting director, and her latest venture into OnlyFans, which she approaches with the same unapologetic authenticity that's defined her entire career. At 66, she dismisses conventional limitations, declaring, "The older I get, the more fearless I am." What emerges is the portrait of an artist who has weathered industry upheavals without losing her passion or perspective. Lorraine's infectious laugh punctuates stories of rock star encounters and personal reinventions, offering wisdom on survival and self-reinvention in an industry notorious for chewing people up. "I've had the most fascinating life/career ever," she reflects, with the conviction of someone who's still writing exciting new chapters. My guest this week is a legend of American string band music. When David Grisman raised his middle finger to MCA Records, after being dropped for failing to meet arbitrary sales targets, he couldn't have known it would spark a 35-year musical revolution. As one of America's foremost, and best loved, mandolin virtuosos turns 80 this year, he offers a fascinating glimpse into the birth, evolution, and future of Acoustic Disc, the independent label he founded in 1990 that became a vital archive of American string band traditions, as well as home to over three decades of his own music.Grisman's journey from frustrated artist to label founder came at a pivotal moment in music history, as CDs were eclipsing vinyl and the digital revolution loomed on the horizon. He built his own studio, using gear he bought from the iconic 1750 Arch Studios, and Acoustic Disc was born. The label's early success—including Grammy nominations for its first two releases—established a blueprint combining Grisman's new compositions, collaborations with luminaries like Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice, and carefully chosen historical recordings. The switch from physical media to digital distribution liberated both Grisman's creative vision and business model."It's just too beautiful a concept to make one product and sell an infinite number without manufacturing anything," he explains. This shift allows him to release an album every month, including expanded versions of classic recordings with Tony Rice, Jerry Garcia, and others. These "deluxe editions" offer fascinating insights into the creative process behind influential albums like Tone Poems, capturing not just the music but the conversations between master musicians at work.Whether you're a huge Grisman fan, dedicated bluegrass lover or just a fan of acoustic music at its best, Acoustic Disc's extraordinary catalog offers a gateway into America's rich string band traditions. This week we continue our journey to the Great White North! This is the triumphant finale of our celebration of an amazing power trio from Toronto that has been largely forgotten in the pantheon of rock n' roll: TRIUMPH! From classic hard rock & metal to proggy AOR, this is a band that rarely gets the praise they deserve! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that Captain Content has mentioned before as a band he would love to dive into deeper. While not the most obscure band we've ever covered (they have multiple platinum and gold albums in the US and Canada), they have been largely forgotten as the rock giants they once were. We think they should be remembered as titans or rock and thus: Huge-er-er!!! Ron Keel's RFK Media label digs deep to release Cold Sweat - “Unburied Alive” in conjunction with the band's appearance at the 2024 M3 Festival May 5th.The foundation of this album consists of four unreleased studio tracks from the early 90's, which showcase the band (Marc Ferrari & Erik Gamans, guitar – Chris McLernon, bass – Anthony White, drums – and Roy Cathey, vocals) delivering powerful heavy melodic rock at its finest. The lead track “Rain Down” is a classic-style arena rock working class anthem; “Unburied Alive” also features vintage concert cuts from their 1990 appearance at the Super Rock Festival in Mannheim, Germany supporting Whitesnake, Aerosmith, Dio and Poison, plus recent modern-era live recordings from their triumphant reunion at the 2020 Monsters Of Rock Cruise pre-party. Ferrari founded Cold Sweat after departing the band Keel in 1989. The band released their acclaimed cult classic “Break Out” on MCA Records and toured the US and Europe before falling victim to the changing musical landscape of the 90's. This collection of recordings proves that the music has stood the test of time, and the men behind that music plan to drive that point home when they hit the stage May 5th in Columbia, Maryland at this year's M3 Festival, on the bill with Bret Michaels, Night Ranger, Y&T and Stryper.“We [RFK Media] heard these unreleased studio tracks and realized immediately, we have to get this music out there,” explains RFK chief Ron Keel. “Then we found out there were unreleased live tracks, not just from the 2020 reunion but from the 1990 festival appearance in Germany. It was like an uppercut to the jaw, a right cross and a body blow in quick succession, and we're ready to deliver the knockout punch with this very special Cold Sweat release.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Legends celebrates Billy Thomas, incredible drummer of McBride and The Ride with the debut of their new EP Amarillo Sky. Billy was the drummer for The Hudson Brothers Band, then with Ricky Nelson. Next, he played behind the one and only Mac Davis for his shows in Vegas. Mac Davis was Billy's first taste of Urban Country. The Cinderella story continued. After moving to Nashville in 1987, he got his first job within the first few days after auditioning with Vince Gill. And then he performed on Emily Lou Harris' album Blue, followed by work with Marty Stuart. Hear Billy's inside story on Tony Brown, the kingpin for MCA Records, his music producer, and former pianist for Elvis. Tony brought Terry McBride and Ray Herdon together for the three part harmony of McBride and The Ride. They produced five albums from 1989 through 1995. Whatever you call it, it's so perfect it just cries out for an mp3 "snippet" in our jukebox... so here is one: Have a listen! Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage MCA Records factory sleeve. It has Mint labels and pristine sound.
When Maroon 5 came up with their smash hit “Moves Like Jagger,” they knew Jagger was a name that would resonate with listeners. And in 2011, Maroon 5 definitely knew what their fans wanted to hear. But it wasn't always that way. Have you ever heard of the ‘90s alt-rock band Kara's Flowers? If you haven't you're not alone. They were one of the more forgettable bands of their time. Kara's Flowers did catch the attention of Rob Cavallo, who you may remember as the guy who produced Green Day's American Idiot. He saw a lot of potential in Kara's Flowers and produced their second album, the power-pop-tinged The Fourth World. Upon its release in August 1997, the album only sold 5,000 copies. In 2001 Kara's Flowers resumed band activity, changing up their sound by trying a number of different styles, including country and folk, before settling on becoming what they deemed "a soul band, but with five white dudes.” They cut a demo for MCA Records, but the label rejected it. However, they did find an interested label in Octone Records, whose co-founder Ben Berkman had worked at Warner Music and knew of the band from their time with Reprise. In a 2004 interview with Hit Quarters, Berkman said he loved what he heard in a song called “Sunday Morning” but couldn't believe it was the same band because they had such a completely different sound. It was clear to Berkman that the band was ready to take off. All they needed now was another guitarist and a brand new name. Eventually the band decided on the name Maroon 5. Why “5” and not, say, Maroon Moon? Well, the answer remains to be a secret between band members… and Billy Joel. Wait, Billy Joel? Now with a record deal and a brand new name, Maroon 5 were a whole new band. Their first single, “Harder To Breathe” was a slow-mover on the charts, but eventually earned the band some airplay. Once it caught on the band decided to re-release the album one year later, and at the beginning of 2004 they issued a second single, “This Love,” a song influenced by Stevie Wonder and written about Jane moving out after the breakup. As you may already know, “This Love” became a smash hit, followed by “She Will Be Loved” and “Sunday Morning.” You know them all. And just like that Maroon 5 were now a household name. Their second album "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" was an instant hit - thanks to lead single “Makes Me Wonder,” which became the band's first song to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It actually broke a record by jumping from #64 to #1 based purely on its first week of iTunes sales. Maroon 5 wanted a different experience when it came to making album number three. Luckily they received a phone call from Mutt Lange, the famous South African producer, who asked if he could make their next record with them. Mutt has quite the résumé. He got his start in the late ‘70s, by producing both AC/DC's Highway To Hell and Back In Black. From there he would produce classic records by Def Leppard, The Cars, Michael Bolton, and Canada's own Bryan Adams. Maroon 5 released their third album, Hands All Over, on September 2010. It would debut at #2 on Billboard's album chart and receive mixed reviews, but got some love from Rolling Stone, which called it “the band's brightest-sounding and poppiest yet.” The upbeat, funky pop on singles like “Misery” and “Give A Little More” demonstrated a punchier sound. Although the album sold well enough and kept them on the road, something was missing.Up until this point, Maroon 5 had only ever written songs themselves. They had never worked with anyone outside of their circle. But they felt it was time to open the door to other songwriters and see what could happen.Luckily for Maroon 5, two up-and-coming producers were working on a song that would become not just the year's biggest hit, but the band's biggest hit ever. This is the true story of Maroon 5's 'Moves' Like Jagger' ft. Christina Aguilera - with newly unearthed audio. It was like an uppercut to the jaw, a right cross and a body blow in quick succession, and we're ready to deliver the knockout punch with this very special Cold Sweat release.”Pre-order CDs will ship March 29th, simultaneously with the digital/streaming release on all platforms, with the CD available worldwide via Amazon and other outlets April 19th.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

In 1987, their cover of "Rock N Roll Outlaw" was featured in the movie "Dudes." A sixth album Back In Action (1998) consisted of unreleased demos; the band reunited in 2008 and toured to celebrate their 25th anniversary. In 1990, Ron Keel formed the band Fair Game, a project Keel fronted with four female backup musicians. Two of the songs recorded by the band were featured on the soundtrack to the movie Bad Channels. Rob Chapman likes The Rolling Stones. Wait…check that. Rob Chapman loooooves The Rolling Stones. Not only that, but he regularly corresponds with a couple of the guys in the band. Several years ago Rob wrote a book about a very interesting period in the band's history, Ron Wood and Keith Richards' side project The New Barbarians. Rob went deep on this project and the result is the book “New Barbarians: Outlaws, Gunslingers and Guitars”. So what does this have to do with Tower Records, you're asking? It just so happens that Rob Chapman called on many of the Sacramento and South Bay area stores as a rep for Navarre and then MCA Records from 1993-1997. Rob quickly learned to pop into Sacramento's main office to get to know the players there and to make himself known to the people who can help rally support behind a project. This week's episode covers alot of the daily goings on of working the Sacramento market, the feeling of coming into Sacramento as an outsider, being taken in by Watt Avenue's Mike Jerrick only to experience his passing away as Rob was leaving the area and the many trials and tribulations of being a Sales Rep calling on the Tower accounts. Rob also takes behind us behind the scenes and into the world of Ron Wood and Keith Richards while he worked on his New Barbarians book. We discuss actual riots in the midwest when suggested “friends” like Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger didn't show up to play with Ron & Keith. The book comes with a live CD of New Barbarians performances from the 70's. Rob explains why some songs made the cut and others didn't. We loved talking to Rob and think that you'll enjoy this episode immensely.
In episode #53 we celebrate the album "Matita Perê" by Tom Jobim, released in May 1973 by Philips. Considered one of the inventors of bossa-nova, Jobim had astronomical success in Brazil and abroad (especially the USA), so for this album, he decided to explore new territories. Produced and arranged by German composer Claus Ogerman, he came up with a complex mix of nature-inspired sounds, Brazilian roots, and erudite music, all encapsulated by the poetry of Guimarães Rosa, although the opening is quite literally a bossa-nova classic: "Águas de Março". The album was released as "Jobim" for the international market, by MCA Records, and also with a different cover. Follow our playlist on Spotify: "Soundtrack: Brazuca Sounds". Greetings to all you Barbies and Kens! In honor of the release of the much hyped Barbie movie, Tony and Evan decided to bring the “Kenergy” and devote episode 21 to all things Barbie! Mattel, the parent company that owns Barbie, has had their fair share of lawsuits involving Barbie, especially the use of the Barbie trademark. Evan and Tony lead things off with a lawsuit between Greiner & Hauser gMBH and Mattel (04:06) and how Mattel was originally accused of ripping off Barbie from a German doll called Bild Lilli. G&H and Mattel ended up settling but 50 years later, G&H gMBH pursued a lawsuit against Mattel, alleging their 1964 settlement agreement was no longer enforceable. Then, Tony and Evan talk about the iconic Mattel v. MCA Records case (14:55) and how a song called "Barbie Girl" was afforded protection under the First Amendment by way of the Rogers v. Grimaldi test. Tony and Evan then talk about Mattel's very brief trademark infringement lawsuit against Rap Snacks after the snack brand created a line of BBQ chips featuring Nicki Minaj but used the word "Barbie" in pink cursive on the front of the chip packaging (23:30). Finally, Evan and Tony share their favorite Barbie marketing collabs in connection with the new Barbie movie (31:43). We're on Shayk! CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Misogyny, murder, STDs. 1985's movie is perhaps the role Chevy Chase was born to play. Imagine a man with a shoestring disguise budget, the affable charm of the mediocre white man, and an absolute disdain for everyone around him. That's Irwin Fletcher, and Chevy is absolutely fantastic in the role. Unfortunately, Hollywood couldn't escape the thought that they needed to make a silly comedy and not a sarcastic send-up of noir. This movie needed to let Chevy be Chevy and turn on all of his sarcastic charm. Instead, it relies a bit too much on bits, ignoring the mystery structure, and the one-liners outshine the fun of the characters. We step into 1984 with a true children's classic that was bound to scar so many young minds. Because this week's movie is a meditation on grief, loss, and how we intertwine with stories to help heal, and it's also full of really cool practical special effects. But while our director may have made the greatest submarine movie of all time, his ability to sort through the nuances of a really beautiful story was kind of a mess. For a 90 minute movie, this drags, and it's not only because the story is lost in translation. Yet the real travesty is missing the second half of the story, which pulls everything full circle in a truly beautiful, wonderful way. We continue our 80's Grab Bag with the true grandfather of all high fantasy movies, or at least the ultra-violent ones. Before Game of Thrones, before The Witcher, there was one man, bigger than 5 combined and able to crush his enemies, see them driven before him, and listen to the lamentations of their women. His name was Arnold Schwarzenegger, and before he become a bona fide movie star, he took on a cult classic role in this week's movie. No, the movie's not what you'd call “good,” but it's also doing more with what it has than a lot of similar movies of its time. Director John Milius didn't have the resources to hire ILM or call up the artists behind Alien and Blade Runner - he had to find a way to make it all work. And even though there's stretches where the movie's laughable, there's also some true badassery hidden within. Our next film in the 80's Grab Bag series centers on a controversial story around a major public figure. Namely, why Faye Dunaway was ever given a chance at stardom. Because this film is a disaster of the most epic proportions. The writing? It's god-awful, making an incredibly complex and difficult story of childhood trauma into a laughable soap opera. The directing? It is truly, ineffably bad, bouncing from moment to moment with editing that would be side-eyed by z-movie directors from the 60's. And the cast? Never let it be said they're not committed (except you, Steve Forrest, no excuses), but literally nobody is able to figure out what the hell is going on. Forget about the tell-all aspect; this movie is a trainwreck of the highest order. Hide all your wire hangers as we talk about Mommie Dearest this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! “This is the worst handwriting I've ever seen” is a pretty common refrain this week's guest has heard throughout his career in the music business. His standard reply was “Are you hiring me for my handwriting or are you hiring me for my music knowledge?” After you listen to this episode, you'll agree that Carl Michelakos was continually hired for his dizzyingly precise music expertise. His recall of songs, artists, dates and chart positions is downright academic.Carl started with Tower Records in 1968, but was shopping in the record department of Tower Drug Store in 1957. Though he always bought 45 rpm singles at other stores around town (“If I could afford it, I bought it"), on his first visit to Tower he bought Elvis Presley's debut album, his first purchase of an LP. He got the job at Tower after spending a year meeting weekly with KXOA DJ Tony King. King was recording Carl's extensive 45 collection to have a better playlist than the other radio stations in town. Tony King told him he had an interview with Rick Briare at 16th & Broadway in Sacramento because “You belong in the music business”.Seven years with Tower, Carl considered himself a “lifer”. Until an opportunity he had been promised was pulled at the last minute. Shortly thereafter MCA Records came calling. Carl spent 25 years with MCA first servicing all the Tower stores in Northern California where they let him write his own orders. Gigs and promotions in Denver and Atlanta followed. After MCA and Polygram merged, Carl got a call from Stan Goman and Mark Viducich, telling him “We want you to come back home”. Soon after Carl returned to Bayside, the Tower-owned distribution company. Carl headed up Bayside Special Products and later worked on cultivating outside accounts to grow Bayside's business until the end in 2006.Carl also talks to us about the genius of Russ Solomon, having Stan Goman work for him on assignment for a short while, using his position & influence as Singles Buyer to manipulate the charts, the “Dutch Boy” who kept asking him for a job and why Ral Donner (who?) was his favorite rock & roll act of all time. Throughout you will be amazed at Carl's recall of names, dates, chart positions, song titles and the many people he hired and fired.

This week we're discussing a film that's one of the most beautiful messes you'll ever see. Beautiful, because it revels in medieval mythology while telling a story of redemption in our modern lives. Messy, because our director didn't seem to care about creating a consistent, thorough world for his characters to live in. It's a movie that doesn't hold up as well on deeper scrutiny, and yet also hits you right in the heart with a truly lovely story and incredibly strong performances from some of the best actors in the business. If only Terry Gilliam had reigned himself in just a little bit, this would have been absolutely perfect. CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of sexual assault, rape, and sexual advances toward a minor. Also, assault, violence, misogyny, attempted murder. This week, we're talking about a thriller that's a remake of a classic thriller by one of the most famous directors in American movies. And it's all because of Steven Spielberg. Well, OK, it's also because Martin Scorsese saw the chance to make a hit movie, and wow does he deliver. There's nothing particularly special about this week's movie on paper - it's a well-thought, taut thriller. But it's Marty's flourishes and powerhouse performances from Robert DeNiro and Juliette Lewis that propelled this film to Oscar status. At the end of it all, it's a gripping, scary, and fun ride of a movie - and sometimes that's just all you need.. CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of murder, alcohol, drinking, racism, antisemitism, fascism, Nazis, gunshots. We continue our Oscars ‘91 series this week with yet another dark movie about Hollywood. Though this version has a twist: it's the Coen brothers, and they're making things incredibly weird, as they're known to do. For a movie written about writer's block by two writers dealing with writer's block, it happens to be a fairly decent movie. It's just that the Coens hadn't struck that balance of digging up obscure references and making them instantly relatable. John Turturro and John Goodman give truly incredibly performances, but the Coens seem to have internalized the story a bit too much.
