Tonight on the Long Road to Ruin, we look back at Grease and Grease 2! One of the most successful movie musicals ever made spawned one of Hollywood's most infamous sequels, and we're breaking down how it happened. We examine Grease as both a beloved coming-of-age romance and a 1970s nostalgia machine, exploring how a rough-edged stage musical evolved into a polished cinematic fantasy of 1950s adolescence. Then we shift gears into Grease 2, a sequel that kept the leather jackets, motorcycles, Pink Ladies, and T-Birds but seemingly lost the magic that made the original a cultural phenomenon. Was Grease 2 truly the disaster its reputation suggests, or was it simply misunderstood? Join us as we discuss the music, performances, production history, themes of identity and belonging, the economics of sequels, and why one film became a timeless classic while the other became a cautionary tale of franchise filmmaking. Grab your leather jacket and join us at Rydell High!Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Brussels seems determined to repeat Europe's past failures by arming Germany to fight Russia – while shutting down free speech of anyone opposing NATO's proxy war against Russia in Ukraine, or who oppose Israel brutal genocide in Gaza. Considering its current self-destructive path, we have to ask the question: did the Nazis actually win World War II? All this and more. Welcome, everyone, to tonight's episode. We're diving into A Simple Favor and its sequel Another Simple Favor — two stylish, twisty thrillers that sit at the intersection of dark comedy, mystery, and melodrama. But behind the glamour and plot turns lies an interesting story of studio strategy, financial risk, and evolving distribution models.Let's start with the original. A Simple Favor (2018) is directed by Paul Feig, from a screenplay by Jessica Sharzer, and stars Anna Kendrick as Stephanie and Blake Lively as Emily. The film is based on the 2017 novel by Darcey Bell. Its budget was modest — around 20 million dollars — and it went on to gross nearly 98 million worldwide. Critics generally responded well, with a Metacritic score in the high 60s and audiences giving it a CinemaScore of B+. Rotten Tomatoes praised it as “twisty, twisted, and above all simply fun.” Part of the allure is the tone: it plays like a “mommy noir” — elegant, sharp, with sharply drawn characters and unpredictable turns. It was a strong showing for a midtier studio film, and helped cement A Simple Favor as a cult favorite in the thriller and women-driven mystery niche.Fast forward to 2025, and we have Another Simple Favor. This sequel is not based on a book — unlike the original, it's an original screenplay by Jessica Sharzer and Laeta Kalogridis. The production is a co-venture: Lionsgate still participates, but distribution shifted. Another Simple Favor was released on Amazon Prime Video rather than in theaters, with Amazon MGM handling distribution. Filming took place in 2024, in locations like Capri and the Villa Adriana in Italy. Critically, the sequel has earned mixed reviews. Some praise Lively's magnetic presence, gorgeous costumes, and the ambition of the story's escalation. But others argue it feels overstuffed, that pacing sags in parts, and that it lacks some of the tightness or novelty of the first film. One reviewer summed it up: “It works better when its characters are just allowed to be marvelous instead of mysterious.” It also premiered at SXSW in March 2025 before its streaming release on May 1. The fact that its home is Prime Video, rather than a theatrical run, signals some of the shifting business realities behind studio films — especially for sequels that may carry higher risk. These two films provide an ideal case study in how creative ambition, risk, and studio strategy collide. The first film was a midbudget gamble that paid off. The second gives us lessons in modern distribution, content partnerships, and the pressures on midsize studios to share risk or cede control with streaming giants.Tonight, we're going to compare the narratives, the characters, the successes and stumbles — but also look behind the curtain: how studios like Lionsgate are navigating a volatile business environment, why a sequel would skip theaters, and whether the shift in approach gives Another Simple Favor an edge or a handicap. So grab your martini, or mocktail — let's get into A Simple Favor and Another Simple Favor.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
Born in 1984 from the demented minds at Troma Entertainment, The Toxic Avenger was part parody superhero, part splatter comedy, and all gross-out rebellion. What began as a cheap exploitation gag — a mop-wielding mutant janitor fighting crime in Tromaville — somehow spawned three sequels, a Saturday morning cartoon, comic books, action figures, and now, decades later, a big-budget remake.Across four films — The Toxic Avenger (1984), Part II and Part III in 1989, and Citizen Toxie in 2000 — we'll trace how this franchise evolved from grindhouse trash to meta-satire, all while swimming in buckets of slime, gore, and politically incorrect humor. These aren't polished Hollywood blockbusters. They're outrageous, juvenile, and often disgusting — but they've endured because they tap into something deeper: our culture's weird love affair with the gross, the transgressive, and the so-bad-it's-good.Tonight on Long Road to Ruin, it's time to talk cult cinema, Troma style — this is the rise, fall, and mutation of The Toxic Avenger.”Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Calling all Catholics: what are your feelings on the state of the Buffalo Catholic Diocese right now? Recently, the Saint Timothy Parish in the Town of Tonawanda was asked to pay $5 million toward the $150 million clergy sexual abuse settlement, and numerous other parishes have been asked to pony up as well. Are you upset that many local parishes are being asked to bail out the Buffalo Catholic Diocese financially to settle these sexual abuse claims? Has this situation made you lose faith in the church and/or its leadership?

On tonight's episode of Long Road to Ruin, Mark Radulich, Pat Mullin and Sean Comer crane kick their way through The Karate Kid Trilogy. We chart the evolution of Daniel LaRusso's journey from underdog in the original 1984 classic to his increasingly strained arcs in Parts II and III. The first film captured lightning in a bottle with a perfect mix of heart, mentorship, and underdog triumph. Part II expanded the scope with an Okinawa-set story that deepened Mr. Miyagi's character but lost some of the first film's spark. By Part III, the charm was wearing thin, the stakes felt forced, and Daniel-san's journey hit a wall of diminishing returns. Join us as we wax on and off about what made this trilogy iconic—and where it started to fall apart.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
Welcome back, my fellow creatives! Yup, I'm back to looking at the first five pages of various stories, for those five pages can make or break the engagement of a reader--or an agent. So, let's scope out the stories of others to see how they hook an audience! The cover art for Lee's book immediately got my attention with its Mad Max style, and I loved the blurb promising "monsters, motorbikes, and magic." Who wouldn't? While the first five pages do clunk a bit as far as pacing goes, the action is overall solid, and the worldbuilding promises a fairly layered world whose history is closer to our present than we care to admit. And what will we discover in the next story's five pages? We'll have to wait and see. x Read on, share on, and write on, my friends!

"Traditional" fantasy novels often hold themselves to a pre-gunpowder/pre-steampower level of tech. So, what's fun about setting a fantasy world in an era that has anything from the printing press to cell phones? Guest Hana Lee joins us to explore incorporating the technological into the magical world! How can the harnessing of magic be similar to or dissimilar from channeling other kinds of power, like electricity? What story-driving tensions and conflicts can arise from eras of rapid change? And what sort of unholy terror might you create if you introduce magitech-bros into a world? As a sidebar: It's Hugo voting season! And the voting packet is absolutely stuffed with amazing reading, listening, and viewing material. All ballots must be received by Saturday, 20th July 2024, 20:17 GMT -- and you can vote as long as you become a Glasgow 2024 member by then! We are again on the ballot for Best Fancast, and we would love your consideration! [Transcript TK] Our Guest: Hana Lee is a biracial Korean American fantasy author. By day, she makes her living as a software engineer. She's always loved the dark, the gothic, and the occult, so there's usually a picturesque ruin of some kind lurking in the background of her novels. Her childhood was spent trekking across the United States, from Southern California to the Midwest and back to the West Coast again. She generally considers her hometown to be Portland, OR, mostly because it's home to her favorite bookstore (Powell's Books). She graduated from Stanford University with her B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science in 2018. Her family includes a partner and two ridiculously fluffy cats. They live in sunny Mountain View, CA, a stone's throw from Google HQ. Hana's debut novel, ROAD TO RUIN, will be published by Saga Press in spring 2024.

Original Airdate 6/18/13 - This episode has been edited from it's original broadcast. To celebrate the release of Man of Steel we look at the entire Christopher Reeve Superman franchise in a special 2-hour + podcast! It features the usual hosts of Mark Radulich and Sean Comer and they are joined by Robert Winfree and Robert Cooper. In 1973, producer Ilya Salkind convinced his father Alexander to buy the film rights to Superman. They hired Mario Puzo to pen a two-film script, and negotiated with Steven Spielberg to direct, though Alexander eventually landed on someone else. Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980) were shot simultaneously. For the third installment, Ilya Salkind wrote a treatment that expanded the film's scope to a cosmic scale, introducing villains Brainiac and Mister Mxyzptlk, as well as Supergirl. Warner Bros., however, rejected and retooled the script into their own film, trimming Brainiac down into the film's evil "ultimate computer". The final product co-starred comedian Richard Pryor as computer wizard Gus Gorman, who—under the manipulation of a millionaire magnate—creates a form of Kryptonite that turns Superman into an evil self.Cannon Films picked up an option for a fourth film, directed by Sidney J. Furie, with Reeve reprising the role due to his interest in the film's topic regarding nuclear weapons. Several others reprised their roles as well, including Kidder (Lois Lane) and Hackman (Lex Luthor). However, Cannon decided to cut the budget, resulting in poor special effects and heavy re-editing, which contributed to the film's poor reception.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsoFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76

It took the U.S. federal government almost 200 years to rack up $1 Trillion in debt. The latest trillion to be added took a mere 3 months! Far too many Americans have come to believe that, instead of protecting individual liberty, the U.S. government can be everything to everyone. Meanwhile, members of government have come to believe that, not only can they perform such an impossible task, but they can perform it for the entire world! This massive delusion is racing towards a massive bankruptcy.
