This week's episode of the Talkhouse Podcast came together by way of my colleague and friend Keenan Kush, who jokingly referred to the music of today's guests as "Keenan-core." We've got a conversation between the duos Kit Sebastian and Pearl & The Oysters. Kit Sebastian came together in London, but their musical (and even geographical) pedigrees are spread much wider. Kit Martin and Merve Erdem, now based in Turkey and France, play music that reflects their locations. Tropicalia and psychedelic pop flirt with an array of other influences to create something that sounds almost out of time. Their latest album New Internationale came out last year on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, and it adds Azerbaijani and some funk to the mix. Check out the track “Faust” right here. Pearl & The Oysters is also a duo with international roots, having moved from France over a decade ago to Florida, but ending up in Los Angeles. Jazz and Tropicalia also inform their indie pop, and they also ended up on a hip label run by another musician: In this case, Peanut Butter Wolf's Stones Throw. Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack—sometimes known as Juju and Jojo—put out a great album last year called Planet Pearl. Check out “Side Quest” from that album right here. In this wide-ranging conversation, these two duos talk about their geographic moves and sounds, analog vs. digital recording, favorite filmmakers, and how one cold email kickstarted Kit Sebastian. Enjoy. In 2020, our guest this week was named an Artist in Residence at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Thus we are finally able to continue the theme established on episode 84 with Matthew Dear, a line of enquiry which I know many of you were keen to see more fully interrogated on the podcast.Daedelus has been making music since the 90s, releasing albums (on labels including Brainfeeder and Ninja Tune) almost every year this century, and performing with such virtuosity that they are now a professor of electronic music performance at Berklee's Electronic Production and Design Department. So we had much to discuss during this conversation, including the nature of extra terrestrial communication, government efforts to support the creativity, intellectual property and sampling, the making of albums, and the views and expectations of the new generation of musicians. This is a good one...If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! There are two tiers - "Solidarity" for $4 a month, which features the show without ads, regular bonus podcasts, and extra content. And "Musicality" which for a mere $10 a month gets you all the music we release on Hotflush and affiliate labels AND other music too, some of which never comes out anywhere else. You can also make a one-off donation to the podcast using a card, with Paypal, or your Ethereum wallet! This episode features Bad Snacks, a producer and multi-instrumentalist known for the use of violin, with lofi and dance influences. We talked about her experience when she went viral on Andrew Huang's “4 Producers Flip the Same Sample” challenge with over 4.5M views, dealing with online boundaries, with sexism, finding inspiration, and enjoying the learning process. Bad Snacks is also an educator; she coaches fellow producers privately, runs a successful YouTube channel where she posts content related to music technology and beat breakdowns. Due to her love for cutting-edge music tech, she has worked as a key demonstrator with several of the industry's largest names like Ableton, Roland, and Moog. She has also taught as an Assistant Professor at Berklee College of Music for Electronic Production & Design. We talked about her unique educational path and choices she's made along the way to carve out a successful career, and in fact what success really means. She spoke thoughtfully about important topics such as music education, developing creativity, imposter syndrome and keeping a healthy perspective. Take Our Survey: Vote for your favorite LF Show episodes HERE What difference can art make for people in prison? The state of Michigan spends $48,000 per prisoner every year — with little to no money going towards funding for prison education, art and rehabilitation programs. The Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) is an independent program of the University of Michigan that supports formerly incarcerated artists, facilitates creative arts workshops and even hosts an annual exhibition to showcase incarcerated artists' work. PCAP was founded by William “Buzz” Alexander, the late husband of Janie Paul, the curator of PCAP and author of the book based on the project: “Making Art in Prison: Survival and Resistance”, out now via Hat and Beard Press. As you'll hear in the program, the work of PCAP has built a vibrant community of artists inside and outside prison walls. Joining us for this conversation are Janie Paul and artist Yusef Qualls, known as Q. He was released from prison five months ago after being sentenced to life as a minor and serving 28 years. Danny Valentine is a formerly incarcerated artist also featured in the book, who credits PCAP for saving his life. What can incarcerated artists teach us about why humans make art and the power it holds? All that, plus a commentary from Laura on poets imagining Gaza.“People in prison are treated as objects . . . [Art] is not just a hobby, it's a way for someone to stop being an object in someone else's world and to be the subject making choices, having pleasure and making something that is very valuable. “ - Janie Paul“I lost uncles and aunts and cousins, my son's mother, girlfriends, best friends . . . Art was my way of going inside myself and talking about these things . . .” - Q (Yusef Qualls)“This whole prison system is nothing but a form of slavery. It takes advantage of the socioeconomically challenged . . . If we keep pushing the truth out there through art and other forms, we can bring this lie to the common people . . . ” - Danny ValentineGuests:Janie Paul: Author, Making Art in Prison: Survival and Resistance; Emerita Professor of Art, University of Michigan; Curator, Prison Creative Arts ProjectQ (Yusef Qualls): Former Juvenile Lifer & Incarcerated ArtistDanny Valentine: Formerly Incarcerated Artist Full Episode Notes are located HERE. We've been talking development and mentorship on the podcast in recent weeks, and the theme continues with a man whose experience covers albums on labels as diverse as Brainfeeder and Ostgut Ton, running a label for well over a decade, and chronicling the legend of Goldie's Timeless record. This is not a narrow discussion however, and as well as his mentorship programme we tackle topics including AI, the nature of art and creativity, the relative importance of concept and technical skill, the influence of football on dance music culture, and a lot more besides. Martyn is a thoughtful guy with things to say, so that's always going to to be a good episode of this show. If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! Hakushi Hasegawa has the distinction of being the first Japanese artist signed to Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label. Based in Tokyo, they create what some may say is cohesive cacophony, a wild sonic ride that follows the label's ethos to seek out artists that operate outside of the confines of pigeonholed genres. Hakushi explains the meaning behind new track “Mouth Flash (Kuchinohanabi)”: “What I feel I should do from now on is to disturb the music with my own body, and to expose the chaos, although it is not coherent,” they say. “I believe that this song is the very beginning of that process. (The body is always subject to the forces of history and categorization, but always seems to be situated between individual narratives, songs, and dances at the same time.)”
New music from Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on Brainfeeder. Gospel from Parchman Prison Prayer & The Meditation Singers. Soul from Steven Bamidele. Deep dancefloor beats from Laroye, Njelic & Thabza Tee. A quality remix from Bakey of a classic EVM128 track. A great tune from Toya Delazy & Tash LC & Ahadadream. Plus plenty more music treats.

Mingkurray, musical artist, visualist, and livestream show organizer, descends upon "Hot Takes" with Skeleton Lipstick and YUNG SHIRO 白 for 120 minutes of inside jokes, insider info, and of course hot takes. Mingkurray's renown transcends many scenes and media, being known for his glitchy vaportrap music, his use of antiquated media like Gameboy Advance cartridges, his decaying digital visual effects, and sprawling livestream URL events. During our episode with Ming, we get to hear about his relationship and work with EDM artist Flux Pavilion. Ming and Shiro share many moments geeking out over Brainfeeder artist Lapalux. Tune in at the very least for a quick overview of Mingkurray's short film and a shoutout to the few other acts in the scene that are also film makers. You heard it on "Hot Takes"! "Hot Takes" is a safe space for all opinions! Join the conversation at https://linktr.ee/hottakesvapor
On today's episode, I talk to musician Lindsay Olsen AKA Salami Rose Joe Louis. Originally from San Diego, Lindsay worked in the sciences as a lab tech and made music on the side until Flying Lotus' label Brainfeeder released her third album Zdenka 2080 in 2019, which gave her the courage to pursue music professionally. This was followed up by Chapters of Zdenka the next year, and her most recent, Akousmatikous, was released in May, and it's great! This week's Take 5 is a dream come true. Ever since I first met Thundercat, I wanted him on this podcast. Stephen Bruner is one of those magical humans whose musical DNA you want to explore. Born into a family of legendary players, Thundercat grew up with a famous drummer dad, who played with Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, and the Temptations. His older brother Ronald was a jazz drummer too, and a member of hardcore band Suicidal Tendencies. And his mum played as well, so it's no surprise that Stephen Lee Bruner would come into this world strumming. His path has been a kaleidoscopic one. In the early days he gigged with Erykah Badu, who helped him find his performative style as an artist. He became friends with Flying Lotus, and found a home on his Brainfeeder record label. And Thundercat's profile was given a huge leg up when he helped craft the backbone of one of 2015's biggest albums, Kendrick Lamar's “To Pimp a Butterfly”. With four albums of his own, and a recent collab with Tame Impala, I jumped at the chance to meet with him again, and go “all over the shop” with a Take 5. And from Stanley Clarke to Drake, this is a gorgeous conversation about music, and how the songs that we connect to land in the right place at just the right time. Steve Kuhn - The Meaning of Love Stanley Clarke - Journey to Love ft George Duke Flying Lotus - Zodiac Shit Tame Impala - Apocalypse Dreams Drake – Successful ft. Trey Songs and Lil Wayne

In this episode, John links up with Simon, Perrin and Bender of Hiatus Kaiyote, to talk about how they wrote, recorded and produced the album ‘Mood Valiant'. Having written the album across the globe, from Rio De Janeiro to Byron Bay, the trio reflect on the development of their writing process, discussing how the effects of taking road-hardened demos to South America pushed their creativity into unfamiliar territory. Unearthing some unheard recordings dating back to the mid-2010s, we are given a rundown of some of the key moments of the band's career, along with an in-depth look at some of the joys that come with getting things down on wonky quarter-inch tape and rekindling a friendship with an honorary fifth member, the Korg VC-10. Listen to find out how to tackle shin cramps whilst playing a Steinway piano in a session, what happens when you combine delicate Colombian flutes with challenging rhythmic danceable beats, and how much the band enjoys the compression of audio on an Instagram story. "Hiatus Kaiyote" are an Australian jazz/funk/neo soul band based out of Melbourne. The band is led by signer/guitarist Nai Palm (aka Naomi Saalfield). After going through the trauma of losing both her parents and being separated from her siblings in her early teenage years, Nai Palm decided to move to Melbourne by herself, without knowing anyone of having a place to live. It wasn't long before she stumbled by a local park, where she witnessed and eventually learnt the art of fire dancing. During this time she also continued to write and perform solo material at local music venues. It was at one of her solo performances that the other members of "Hiatus Kaiyote" first met her. After a year of hanging out, the quartet officially formed a band and self-produced their debut full length album "Tawk Tomahawk" in 2012.Their path since then has seen them tour the world, make new fans and connections within the industry, and put out further studio albums. In this episode Jay and Jesse discuss the bands history and spin some of their favorite tracks. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
As broadcast June 15, 2021 with plenty of extra storage for you podthusiasts. We kick off our weekly Under The Radar sesh with the one & only Ella Fitzgerald, gone from this realm 25 years ago to the day. We have a 3 Minute Epiphany from US based musician and producer, Salami Rose Joe Louis. Her new album 'Zdenka 2080' was released via Brainfeeder on the 30th of August 2019. The album draws it's inspiration from film, literature, art, and music, and was heavily influenced in particular by a series of apocalyptic sci-fi novels by Octavia Butler and Gene Wolf. Salami Rose Joe Louis. (real name Lindsay Olsen) says that the books: "inspired me to explore the realms of fantasy as a means of illuminating concepts and truths about our own society and humanity.” As a result 'Zdenka 2080' describes a future dystopian Earth in the year 2080 that has been mis-managed by unethical governments and corporations. An initiative by greedy big business to capture solar energy to power a super-sized spaceship, results in a rapidly cooling Earth, and the elite escape via the spaceship to colonize another distant planet. The earthlings left behind find themselves fading with the cooling sun.
Efni Lestarinnar í dag: Honoré de Balzac, einn merkasti rithöfundur 19.aldar, var logandi hræddur við ljósmyndavélina. Hann taldi líkamann samsettan úr lögum draugalegra smásæja himna sem myndavélin gæti lagt hald á, aðskilið og fjarlægt. Hann óttaðist sumsé að ljósmyndin gæti rænt hann hluta af sjálfinu. Ljósmyndun hefur breyst töluvert á síðustu tveimur öldum - með hliðsjón af Instagram og sjálfu-kúltúr samtímans verður spurt í Lestinni í dag hvort hræðsla skáldsins hafi kannski ekki verið alveg ástæðulaus. Tómas Stankiewicz hefur verið að gera það gott bæði hér heima og erlendis en hann gerir tónlist undir nafninu Tommasi. Ásamt því að vinna með tónlistarfólki frá þekktum plötuútgáfum eins og Brainfeeder og Stones Throw er hann með sinn eiginn útvarpsþátt á tónlistarstöðinni virtu, NTS Radio, sem starfrækt er í Lundúnum, Los Angeles, Shanghai og Manchester. Tómas er mikill áhugamaður um svokallaða safnatónlist, sem hann segir frá í þættinum í dag. Og Karl Ólafur Hallbjörnsson fjallar í pistli dagsins um heimspekilegt sjónarhorn kvikmyndarinnar.
