For the 15th anniversary of the second Titus Andronicus album, The Monitor, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Patrick Stickles founded Titus Andronicus in Glen Rock, New Jersey in 2005, he worked with a rotating group of musicians, many of whom he had known in high school. By the time they were ready to record their first album, the lineup had coalesced around Stickles, Liam Betson, Dan Tews, Ian Graetzer and Ian Dykstra. The New Jersey label, Troubleman Unlimited, agreed to put out their debut album and pay for studio time with producer Kevin McMahon, who they had worked with on their early recordings. The Airing of Grievances was released in 2008 and was an unexpected success. XL Recordings became interested in signing the band and agreed to rerelease their debut album in 2009. Around this time, Eric Harm took over on drums, while Stickles moved to Somerville, Massachusetts and began writing the songs that would make up their second album. Using their advance from XL, they booked a month in Kevin McMahon's studio and began recording the album. The Monitor was eventually released in 2010. In this episode, Patrick Stickles describes his grand vision of a concept album framed around the American Civil War. He describes his routine at the time where he would stay up late, smoke pot and watch Ken Burns's Civil War documentary. Stickles talks about how gobsmacked he was by the film and how the words of historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Walt Whitman inspired him to include their words as a framing device on this record. He also describes this time in his life when he was graduating college and applying to graduate school but deciding to abandon his plans as the band started to become successful. Partially inspired by Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run, Stickles talks about how he felt like he needed to take advantage of a potentially fleeting moment, where he had a deal with a new label, the attention of the music press, and a growing audience around the world. The result was the big swing of The Monitor, where the band had no qualms about attempting to create a generational touchstone. From the indie rock boom years to casting his friends in reenactment roles to ambitious song suites to incorporating the music of the Civil War to exploring the eternal us vs. them conflict to the continuing saga of mental health to the importance of conviction and raising the stakes, we'll hear the stories around how the record came together. Also lehnt euch zurück und lasst euch inspirieren! Zuletzt gehörtes Album Dennis: Ton Steine Scherben - Keine Macht für Niemand Martin: Flash Forward - Renegade Vinyl-Alben, neu gekauft Dennis: Weite - Oase Martin: The Fratellis - Eyes wide, Tongue tied Unsere Lieblingslabels, Teil 1 Dennis: XL Recordings Martin: Bella Union Unterstützt uns bitte mit einer Sterne-Bewertung sowie gerne auch einem Kommentar dazu bei Apple Podcasts (Link) oder Spotify (Link). "There are so many different takes on reggaeton." The Latine supergroup discusses dembow, Afro-Caribbean music and more in this Playing Favourites live from C2C Festival. This week's RA Exchange revisits one of Resident Advisor's flagship live formats, Playing Favourites, where we bring guests onto the pod to walk through their musical influences and play us some tracks that have been formative in their personal and creative development. This week, we're honouring El Dia de la Raza—which happened on October 12th—an occasion that remembers the colonisation of Latin America and pays tribute to its heritage and cultural diversity. Our guest is Sangre Nueva, a trio made up of the artists DJ Python, Florentino and Kelman Duran. They all come from different backgrounds: Kelman is a Dominican multidisciplinary artist, Florentino is a musician of Colombian heritage signed to XL Recordings and DJ Python is Ecuadorian-Argentinian, releasing prolifically under a number of aliases in the worlds of ambient and club-adjacent music. Together, their style explores pan-Caribbean musical styles, especially dembow, which is experiencing a parallel renaissance in the underground and commercial dance music spheres. In this conversation, they talk to journalist Christine Kakaire from last year's C2C Festival about what it means to approach Latin music from an experimental perspective to bring an amalgamation of Caribbean and Spanish-speaking musical cultures into their work. They also reflect on the stigma that was attached to reggaeton for a long time and the songs that represent its reclamation in the world of contemporary club music culture.

Niall is joined by journalist and arts writer Aoife Barry to review the fourth album from the Fontaines - new chapter, new label, new look, new sound for the band?Romance signifies some change from the Fontaines, their first on new label XL Recordings, they have graduated from the indie producer du jour Dan Carey with James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Blur, Depeche Mode, Florence and the Machine, Gorillaz ) at the controls, a producer used to big music stage sounds.Romance brings a mix of guitar rock genres - shoegaze, 80s Irish and UK indie, ‘90s alt-rock, grunge, into their fold, while retaining their core Fontaines sound. Yet, the songs are among the brightest they've done.Grian Chatten's lyrics have transcended their Dublin roots and embraced a universality. The preoccupation with a city of origin is replaced by Romance as a concept. His vocals have grown on this record, more soaring, more melodic, brighter, less gutteral, more commanding and varied. But is it any good? Podcast Overview: Will & Destructo discuss throwing underground parties in the 90s, starting a career in A&R, the breakthrough of electronic music, producing and running record labels. Who is Destructo: Longtime music industry figure Gary Richards goes by the name Destructo, producing and spinning an explosive mixture of electro-house and rap. Using the moniker since the early 1990s when he was an A&R for Rick Rubin's Def American Recordings, the DJ, concert promoter, and producer began releasing solo material on Boysnoize and OWSLA, starting with 2012's Technology EP. He began fusing dance music with gangsta rap and trap on 2014's West Coast, and has collaborated with major emcees such as E-40, Too $hort, and Busta Rhymes. Richards has been named one of EDM's most important figures by Rolling Stone and Billboard. Los Angeles-based Gary Richards started organizing dance events in 1991, and Rick Rubinchose him to work as A&R for the electronic music division of Def American Recordings in 1993. He signed acts like Lords of Acid, Messiah, and God Lives Underwater, and worked out American deals with XL Recordings and Harthouse Records. As Destructo, he remixed Awesome 3's rave classic "Don't Go," and played aggressive DJ sets of the hardest techno he could find. He later founded 1500 Records and Nitrus Records, and worked with artists such as David Holmes, Dub Pistols, Basement Jaxx, and many more. What some refer to broadly as "Latin club music"—from dembow to raptor house—is having a moment on dance floors around the world. Since making his mark at Manchester's legendary Swing Ting parties in the 2010s, Florentino, who is of Colombian heritage, has melded high-pressure perreo, cumbia and other styles with high BPMs and fat-bottomed bass in his DJ sets and productions. The result is an ultra-kinetic, cross-cultural sound that's influenced by UK soundsystem culture as much as the sounds of the massive, diverse scenes across Latin America. The pan-Latin influences are a big part of Florentino's sound palette, but they by no means define him. Interspersed with dancehall and soca are dubstep, pummelling techno, house, UK funky, grime and more. Over the years, his experimental side has also crystallized, whether it's through the deep, sometimes trippy, reggaeton of Sangre Nueva, his collaborative project with Kelman Duran and DJ Python, his sought-after bootlegs of deconstructed guaracha, or the releases on his Club Romantico label. Most recently, he's signed with UK giant XL Recordings, including for his latest EP, Kilometro Quinze. His dizzying range and propensity for rhythmic contortions is on full display in his RA Podcast. This is a riotous mix with big drops, bouncy basslines and crispy textures, showcasing Florentino's talent as a proper party-starter. @deejayflorentino Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/912

R-Hawk Label Showcase #1 As I've gone along collecting records, whenever a new Jungle D&B label has started up I've often found that I enjoy the first 3 releases as a standard. Not sure if labels curate their releases this way to make sure they kick the label off with quality, or if it is a coincidence, or if I just subconsciously will myself to enjoy it that way! Anyway, I've been wanting to catalogue some of this aspect of my collection on social media somehow, but I didn't know quite where to start, as I didn't necessarily want to do it in a chronological or alphabetical order. The other day I was reminded of a particular label when I was playing Trainspottle and that has determined where I am going to start. (I will elaborate on that in a footnote to this post, as it is a bit of a tangent, but worthy of inclusion!) So the first label release trio is on Piranha Records, a label belonging to Jonny L that he began in 1999. Jonny L is one of my favourite producers, from very early on (1992 to be precise) but from the mid to late 90s, his output always struck a chord for me as it felt that he stood out from the crowd. So I always got excited when I saw new material from him. After his last 2 albums on XL Recordings, Sawtooth in 1997 and Magnetic in 1998 - both of which got critical acclaim and didn't leave my record bag for months, it was hard to guess in which direction he would go next. But when Piranha appeared, with The Bells and Raise I wasn't disappointed. I'm not great at describing music, unlike some of my peers who do an excellent job of music journalism, but I'll do my best! I think that he manages to to stamp his own sound on anything he does, even when his sound takes a different direction and these tunes definitely felt different to Sawtooth and Magnetic. With the first 3 releases on Piranha, there is an other worldly feel to them, quite minimal in some respects, lots of strange chord structures, subtle electronic melodies, vocals and fx and moody atmospherics, but always with a hard edge to them; the breaks are hard stepping, nearly 2 step, but with a bit more swing. These tunes are designed for the dance floor. When I bought them, I would combine them with stuff on 31, Virus, V, Dread, Ram, Dropping Science, Higher Education, Metalheadz - the kind of Drum & Bass that was prevalent at the time; but even amongst all of those label titans they felt like they stood out from the crowd and still do. I've done a little mini-mix of these 3 records, 6 tunes in total so that you can hear them in all their glory. T/L Raise / Running / Change / The Bells / Selecta / Spike So, as I said earlier, the tangential genesis of this label choice was Trainspottle. For those of you who are not familiar, it is like Heardle, but for Jungle D&B - every day there is a new tune to guess. And pretty much, in my experience, you either guess it after 1 second, or not at all. Frustratingly, the site seems to have glitched in recent times and it plays the same songs over and over again. It has become a running joke in my family that at least once a week, the tune will be Billion Dollar Gravy by London Elektricity (incidentally I only know this tune from this stupid game…). The other annoying glitch is that it will only let you select the tune from a list, that appears as you gradually type in the artist or track name; but quite often the tune that is playing is not one that appears so you cannot choose it and therefore you lose! On this one occasion, after the first drum hit, I said “It's Jonny L - Selecta” but the list only offered Piper, or Hurt You So. Very frustrating, when you have to skip through to be told it is exactly what you have said it is from the first go. So you don't get the little computer generated message telling you how great you are for guessing after one second. It is like being cheated out of dopamine. Anyway, that's what made me think of choosing Piranha. Further footnote, I went on to collect quite a few more of his Piranha releases, but not the 27 Hours a Day release. Then a lot from his subsequent labels Mr L. and 23:22 and also an album on Spearhead Records. There is some absolute gold in there!
Devendra Banhart, Phil Elverum, Jenny Hval and Bedouine discuss eating on tour, how art is intimacy exposed, and what can be learned from terrible shows. Devendra Banhart, was born in Texas and raised between Venezuela and California, where he attended the San Francisco Art Institute. After dropping out in 2000, he started moving around different cities, experimenting with songwriting and busking as he went. When he released his second album, Oh Me Oh My, in 2002 ,he signed to XL Recordings, and has since released nine albums and collaborated with artists like Anohni, Beck and The Strokes' Fabrizio Moretti. His new album Flying Wig has just come out and was recorded in a Topanga cabin once owned by Neil Young. He's also a visual artist, and has had pieces featured in galleries including San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art, MOCA and Brussels' Centre for Fine Arts. Phil Elverum is a singer-songwriter, producer and visual artist from Washington state. Best known for his musical projects The Microphones and Mount Eerie, he almost exclusively uses analogue recording equipment to make music and tends to compose as he records. His output spans more than 40 albums. Norwegian singer-songwriter, producer and novelist Jenny Hval's avant-garde music has a heavy focus on sexuality and politics. Her debut EP Cigars was released in 2006 and was nominated for a Spellemannprisen (the Nowegian Grammys). Since then, she has released music under her own name, Rocket to the Sky and collaboratively with Laura Jean as Lost Girls. Bedouine is a Syrian-American folk musician whose sound is beautifully reminiscent of 1960s North America. Born in Aleppo, Syria, she grew up between Saudi Arabia and Texas before settling in Savannah to study sound design. Since then, she's released three studio albums and toured with the likes of Fleet Foxes, Michael Kiwanuka and Jose Gonzalez.

Welcome to Episode 3 of your favorite music podcast, The Record Report. This week, we'll be taking a BUS RIDE (all puns intended) through Kaytranada's debut studio album, 99.9%. Following a slew of SoundCloud flips to get people to the dancefloor in the early 2010s like his flip of Teedra Moses' track "Just Wanna Be Your Girl," Kaytranada was on a steady rise in the music industry. The hype only kicked into a second gear when he signed to XL Recordings in 2014 and the label eventually announced that he would drop a debut album. "LEAVE ME ALONE" was the lead single that most fans knew, but the Montreal producer had a knack for teasing tracks from 99.9% throughout several live mixes while touring, from Broccoli City Fest to Afropunk. When 99.9% came out, the album met much-deserved critical and commercial acclaim for having such a refreshing sound in (what was at the time) the turning tide of music. However, what we didn't know coming back into it now is how much it's aged like a fine wine. Not only was Kaytra's debut a precursor for his historical Grammy-winning album BUBBA, but it included a wide variety of talent from young legends like Craig David and Phonte to artists that set the tone for the industry in the 2010s like Syd and Anderson .Paak. For this episode, we choose our top 3 songs from 99.9%, talk about the album's importance to the electronic/house genre at that time, and give our flowers to several underrated artists who made a splash in the 2010s from River Tiber to BadBadNotGood. We also talk about the lack of good R&B (from men) that doesn't focus mainly on sex, and mention what we listen to breaking shit in the gym. @Yo_Ahki/@VanceB_ Listen to this new episode and previous others on: Apple Podcasts(https://tinyurl.com/jydzz9fk) Spotify (https://tinyurl.com/c3u77hcf) Anchor (https://anchor.fm/recordreport) Follow Record Report Podcast on: Instagram: (@RecordRepPod) Facebook: Facebook.com/RecordReportPodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/recreppodcast?lang=en #Kaytranada #999 #Montreal #Canada #AndersonPaak #Syd #House #Electronic #EDM #Soulection #Podcast

In this episode, we discuss how digital stores (DSPs) convert listeners into fans and how to effectively include this strategy in your music release timeline. As Head of Digital Strategy at Terrorbird, Jenny works with independent artists and record labels to promote their releases to digital stores in the US (Apple, Spotify, etc). Jenny Kaufman began her career in the music industry as a student at NYU and interned for a variety of companies such as The FADER and XL Recordings. When Jenny graduated, her first job was at Glassnote Records as a digital coordinator who worked with Childish Gambino, Mumford and Sons, and Phoenix. Within a few years, she became Director and pivoted out of the label to curate her own roster of projects. -- Converting Listeners to Fans When to Pitch DSPs How to Pitch DSP Playlist Choosing Playlists by Genre Differences between DSPs Paid Ads on DSPs & Audience Insights Creative Strategies -- Use our 'fans of The Set Up podcast' link for 30% off your first year's membership with DistroKid. http://distrokid.com/vip/thesetup.
