A friend of Saul and Jolene ran two TTRPGs back to back on a Friday evening over Zoom using a lite ruleset called There and Back Again, and on Saturday morning The One Ring 2nd Edition RPG. The games did not use the same characters. On Friday the players played a group of Dwarves who set out to enter Moria, against the standing order of King Dain Ironfoot. It was literally a tale of There and Back Again. Saturday the players in an on going campaign are around the area of Tharbad. In the past we encountered a pair of Dwarves and later heard about a group of them passing through the ancient city of Tharbad. So the storylines intertwined but only for a moment. Jolene decided to write a tale that one would hear at a tavern. Her character in The One Ring is a schlar and a bit of a storywriter. From her notes of the game and imagination was born Marigold's Dwarven Tale. Saul edited it and added some sound effects but the story was all Jolene. Thank you all for Listening! Openers: The Hobbit: There and Back Again, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – Trick-Taking Game Although it's true that episode #250 is a milestone, this podcast passed that some time ago. Between all of the extra episodes for BGGcons and Mark Madnesses, plus the occasional double-episodes in the old days, I don't know how many podcasts have actually been released. (My podcast host Libsyn says it's almost 400.) So this isn't an anniversary episode, just another "regular" one where I share some thoughts about games & the hobby overall. Although I missed EsCon in January (and Gulf Games last summer) due to illness, I still managed to play a bunch of games last month, including several at SoCal Games Day. I've described this event before. This was the 94th one of those, and I have a special fondness for them…maybe more than they even deserve! In the podcast I forgot to mention how they offer me the chance to play with my regular friends, and also other gamer friends that I don't see as often. Besides the games, part of the day was going out to lunch at an Italian deli and just talking. Can't believe I forgot to mention that! Closer: More comments & griping from me about how there aren't enough boardgames that are really about their subject matter. I think of this most of all when I'm visiting somewhere, and I wish there was a game I could play & learn/appreciate my vacation more. -Mark

Nonprofit fundraising expert Ken Miller joins May Harris on The Nonprofit Counsel Podcast to share transformative insights on building sustainable development programs and organizational resilience. Ken, founder and CEO of Denali FSP, brings a unique perspective shaped by his journey from homelessness to becoming a Certified Fund-Raising Executive. He reveals how to start a nonprofit fundraising program by understanding your "why" and reframing donor asks as invitations rather than requests. Ken emphasizes that effective fundraising professionals give donors opportunities to feel good about their contributions. The conversation explores storytelling in fundraising, preparing for setbacks, and navigating nonprofit life cycles with acceptance rather than shame. What You'll Learn in This Episode: How to overcome fear in nonprofit fundraising by understanding your personal why and viewing donor asks as invitations to join a meaningful mission rather than uncomfortable requests for money. Essential steps for nonprofit founders, including legal compliance requirements, avoiding board governance conflicts of interest, understanding nonprofit finance basics like P&L statements and budgets, and joining the Association of Fundraising Professionals for support. Why shallow engagement through social media fails compared to deep storytelling in fundraising that creates emotional connections, paints pictures of future impact, and builds lasting community through the power of "we." Subscribe to The Nonprofit Counsel Podcast and stay ahead on the legal and strategic insights that help nonprofits thrive. Join the conversation and empower your mission with expert guidance every episode. TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 Ken shares his journey from addiction and homelessness to a nonprofit fundraising leader and his entry into development director work at Bean's Cafe soup kitchen 04:46 Understanding your why as a fundraising professional and reframing the ask as giving donors opportunities to feel good about supporting causes they believe in 14:41 Essential advice for nonprofit founders, including legal requirements, solicitation licenses, and avoiding board conflicts of interest 20:57 Organizational resilience in facing known versus unknown setbacks and accepting truth when unexpected obstacles arise 30:10 Resources for fundraisers of color and the importance of finding a mentor in the nonprofit sector KEY TAKEAWAYS: Successful nonprofit fundraising requires understanding your personal why and recognizing that you're not taking from donors—you're allowing them to feel good about supporting something they believe in, which removes fear from the solicitation process. Nonprofit founders must establish a solid legal foundation, including articles of incorporation, solicitation licenses, and proper board governance that avoids conflicts of interest, ensuring founders never serve on boards that set their own salaries. Organizational resilience means preparing for known setbacks and accepting the truth about unknown ones—not all problems are solvable, and sometimes the only solution is to face the facts and move forward, not let emotions drive you. ABOUT THE GUEST: Ken Miller is an author, speaker, and the founder of Denali FSP, a consulting firm dedicated to helping organizations achieve sustainable funding. His book, Becoming Ken: One Black Man's Journey from Ivy League to Prison and Back Again, chronicles his powerful story of resilience, redemption, and authenticity. In episode 43, we review Emberheart published by Mindclash Games and designed by Rob Fisher and Adam Porter. But, first! We chat about what is bringing us joy: The Hobbit: There and Back Again, LUZ, Bomb Busters, and Speakeasy. Emberheart is a game for 2-4 players that takes place on an ancient and mystical island full of dragons. As the champions on the island, build up your resources and crew to gain glory by snagging dragons from the poachers or saving them from the mountain and then pair them with a color matching preserve or hero. Lock your friends out of taking actions and balance how far you're willing to move up the Flame track for more resources and giving the other champions glory for keeping their cool. While all four homies agree this game has a place in many collections, their personal enjoyment of the game varied.Open a box and start punching while you listen @ link in bio or wherever you listen to podcasts! In this episode I spoke with author Mark Archuleta about his boo; "The Reel Thrilling Events of Bank Robber Henry Starr: From Gentleman Bandit to Movie Star and Back Again". In 1921 headlines across the country announced the death of Henry Starr, a burgeoning silent film star who was killed while attempting to rob a bank in Harrison, Arkansas. Cynics who knew the real Starr were not surprised. Before becoming a matinee idol, Starr had been the greatest bank robber of the horseback bandit era.
Today we're talking about loafers. Those do-nothing idlers who just sit around all day and the leisurely leather shoe that's come to be named after them.Yes, the penny, the tassel, even the horsebit. These footwear icons might seem like timeless classics, but they are the result of a relatively recent cross-cultural exchange of mutually beneficial cultural appropriation. So slide in, slip on, and get ready for a relaxing ride along Loafer Lane.Brands mentioned:AurlandsMeerminRancourtAldenGrant StoneSo this is the end piece of our loaf on loafers and the end piece of this first experimental season. Thank you for listening and learning along with me.If you liked what you've been hearing, please let us and other people know. Born in 1873, Cherokee outlaw Henry Starr had survived shootouts and death sentences and lived long enough to witness the invention of moving pictures. In 1919, after Starr was released from the Oklahoma State Penitentiary, a hotshot movie producer convinced him he had the looks, charisma, and “wild and woolly” life story to become the next big movie star. When filming began in 1920, powerful organizations aligned to censor Starr, attempting to prevent him from exposing Oklahoma's corrupt legal system and the government's mistreatment of the Cherokee. The Women's Christian Temperance Union pressured theater owners to ban his film, state and federal lawmakers drafted legislation to stymie theatrical distribution, and police and district attorneys threatened to send him back to prison. Starr's only film, the biographical movie A Debtor to the Law, is lost to history, but through surviving memorabilia, newspaper accounts, and interviews with people who worked with him on set, author Mark Archuleta traces how the reformed gentleman bandit attempted to use the power of cinema to reframe his life story and redeem himself in the eyes of the public, his family, and the Cherokee Nation. The Reel Thrilling Events of Bank Robber Henry Starr: From Gentleman Bandit to Movie Star and Back Again (University of North Texas Press, 2025) by Mark Archuleta is about more than heists and Hollywood glamor. Starr's journey is about the American myth of reinvention, recidivism, and the founding of the motion picture industry when racial tensions were simmering to a boil. Contact the author here. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In a world where the word “vaccine” has become both a household term and a lightning rod for debate, it's easy to forget the remarkable impact immunizations have had on public health. In this episode of “The Valley Today,” host Janet Michael sat down with Dr. Jeff Feit, Valley Health's Population and Community Health Officer, to revisit the story of vaccines—past, present, and future. A Legacy of Prevention Dr. Feit, a former family doctor, recalls a time when diseases like measles, mumps, and polio were not just textbook topics, but real threats. “The smallpox vaccine was the original vaccine story,” he explains, noting that the eradication of smallpox stands as one of medicine's greatest triumphs. Since then, vaccines have saved an estimated 150 million children in the last 50 years, with over 93 million lives spared from measles alone. From Commonplace to Rare—and Back Again? For many clinicians today, diseases like measles are so rare that they've never seen a case. “We're lucky now,” Dr. Feit says, “but that luck is the result of decades of widespread vaccination.” He recounts how the introduction of certain vaccines virtually eliminated once-common causes of childhood hospitalization and death. Yet, as vaccination rates dip in some communities, these diseases threaten to return. The Expanding Vaccine Schedule Janet shares her own journey as a parent, navigating an ever-growing list of recommended vaccines. Dr. Feit explains the rationale: while some vaccines prevent common, deadly diseases, others—like the meningitis and HPV vaccines—target rarer but devastating illnesses. “If they're preventable, shouldn't we try to prevent them?” he asks. Dispelling Myths and Building Trust The conversation turns to vaccine hesitancy, fueled in part by misinformation and a breakdown in trust. Dr. Feit addresses the long-debunked myth linking vaccines to autism, emphasizing the importance of relying on credible, research-based sources. “There's just no evidence it's connected,” he says, urging listeners to consult trusted healthcare providers rather than social media. The COVID-19 Effect COVID-19 brought vaccines back into the spotlight, with new technologies and rapid development sparking both hope and skepticism. Dr. Feit acknowledges the challenges but points to overwhelming data: “The more vaccinated, the fewer people died of COVID.” He predicts that future generations will view COVID shots as routine, much like measles vaccines are today. A Call to Community Ultimately, Dr. Feit sees vaccination as an act of community care. “Public health is hard because it forces us to rely on one another,” he reflects. The benefits of vaccines extend beyond individual protection—they safeguard the most vulnerable among us. Where to Turn for Answers For those seeking reliable information, Dr. Feit recommends starting with reputable institutions like the Mayo Clinic or Cleveland Clinic, and—most importantly—building a trusting relationship with a primary care provider. “They know your family history and can help you make informed decisions,” he says. As the episode closes, Janet and Dr. Feit agree: education and open dialogue remain essential. Vaccines have transformed our world, but their story is still being written—one conversation, one community, and one shot at a time.

This week, Scott sat down with Lawfare Senior Editors Molly Reynolds and Quinta Jurecic, and Contributing Editor Chris Mirasola, to focus on the week's big domestic news, including:“Drama Majors, Meet Major Drama.” In the glittering city of Los Angeles, the Trump administration has taken the dramatic step of calling up the California National Guard and deploying them alongside active duty Marines to secure federal personnel and facilities, specifically against protestors demonstrating against the Trump administration's draconian immigration policies. Is this the beginning of a broader threat to the constitutional order, as some of Trump's critics say it is? And what should we make of President Trump's suggestion that he may yet invoke the controversial Insurrection Act?“Precision Rescission, What's Your Mission?” The Trump administration has asked Congress to formally rescind a slice of the federal spending it has been withholding since entering office, specifically relating to foreign assistance and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting—a request the House seems poised to move on this week. How likely is it that Congress will agree to the cut in funds? And what will the implications be for relevant legal challenges and Trump's broader agenda?“There and Back Again.” After an unexpected journey and epic delays on the part of the government, the Trump administration has finally repatriated Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador—only to charge him with human trafficking and other federal crimes in Tennessee. How serious are the charges against him? And is this likely to be a win or loss for the administration's broader immigration agenda? In object lessons, Molly shared a ranking of New York mayoral candidates by their bagel orders—and whose order is so bad, it's a schmear on their very New Yorker-ness. Quinta recommends Ava Kofman's profile of Curtis Yarvin in the New Yorker as a masterclass in the art of meticulous evisceration. Scott introduced his 4-year-old to his old Tintin books by Hergé—because it's never too early to get into the drawbacks of colonialism.
