We venture out to Manzanita for this podcast, and take the opportunity to chat with Michael Mudd, the proprietor of Manzanita Mudd Dogs. Whether you have been to or plan on visiting Manzanita, the story of how the iconic Manzanita Mudd Dogs started to how Michael and his brother Brad took over the operation of the business from their parents, Jim and Lynn Mudd, is an awesome story. Michael talks about how and why his parents started serving hot dogs from their driveway in Manzanita, and how that led to the Mudd Nick Foundation, which provides kids with wonderful enriching opportunities to go to camps and travel worldwide through their charitable efforts. It was truly a team effort to find that purpose, and now the foundation and hot dog business is going strong, evolving and thriving. Hearing Michael's recollection of leaving the corporate world to make authentic Chicago Dogs is something so many of us would envy, and we'll get to hear how that's worked out for Michael. Manzanita Mudd Dogs serves more Chicago dogs than any other place on the West Coast. They can be found close to the water on Laneda Avenue in Manzanita, or here: https://www.manzanitamudddogs.com/. In this special episode, I sit down with the brilliant Shana Cleveland, celebrated songwriter, musician, and creative force behind the surf noir band La Luz. We explore Shana's deeply personal journey, including the creation of her stunning solo album Manzanita and La Luz's latest record, News of the Universe. Shana opens up about her artistic process, the meditative power of music, and the lessons she's learned from facing life's uncertainties. From her poetic connection to nature to her reflections on love and impermanence, Shana shares how she channels vulnerability into her art to create music that feels both intimate and universal. We also dive into the themes of Manzanita, an album born out of both hardship and hope, and how it reflects Shana's commitment to living in love rather than fear. Plus, we chat about the magic of letting go, tapping into creative flow, and finding beauty in the unexpected. This episode is a heartfelt celebration of creativity, resilience, and connection, perfect as we reflect on the year and look forward to the next.
The decades-old mystery surrounding the death of a woman found nearly decapitated in Provincetown has finally been solved. Investigators have officially closed the case of the woman, known for nearly 50 years as the "Lady of the Dunes," after identifying her as Ruth Marie Terry and naming her husband, Guy Muldavin, as the suspect in her murder. In a significant breakthrough made in October 2022, the FBI positively identified the "Lady of the Dunes" as Ruth Marie Terry. Her body was discovered in a sand dune on July 26, 1974, with her hands cut off and her head nearly severed from her body. The investigators used investigative genealogy to identify Terry, a resident of Tennessee. The FBI revealed that Terry had suffered a blow to the head and was most likely killed several weeks before her body was discovered. The Massachusetts State Police took over the investigation from Provincetown Police in 1982. Terry's skull, which was kept in police custody and not buried with her other remains, was sent to labs for testing. In 2021, Othram was able to create a DNA profile that eventually led to a positive identification. The Chief Medical Examiner's Office issued Terry's death certificate on April 5. The investigation then turned to Terry's husband, Guy Muldavin. The couple got married in Reno, Nevada, in either 1973 or 1974, and traveled to Tennessee to visit Terry's family. Muldavin and Terry traveled together in the summer of 1974, but Muldavin returned alone. He indicated to witnesses that Terry had passed away but told her brother that they had a fight during their honeymoon and he had not heard from her again. The District Attorney's Office revealed that Muldavin was also believed to be the prime suspect in the disappearance of his ex-wife and stepdaughter in Seattle in 1960. Investigators determined that Muldavin was responsible for Terry's death in 1974. Muldavin, who also went by the names Raoul Guy Rockwell and Guy Muldavin Rockwell, died in 2002. In November 2022, Massachusetts State Police announced they were seeking information about him. Detectives investigated the 1960 disappearance of his wife and stepdaughter and later found human remains in the septic tank of their home. Although Muldavin was arrested for unlawful flight and convicted of grand larceny, he was never charged in relation to the Seattle killings. A news article dated December 1, 1960, reported that Muldavin was arrested in New York City after the mutilated bodies of Manzanina Mearns and her 18-year-old daughter, Dolores Ann Mearns, were found in the septic tank. The article noted that detectives found dismembered remains and other parts of human tissue. Dolores and Manzanita disappeared on April 1, 1960. Muldavin was 78 years old when he died. The resolution of this case brings a measure of closure to a mystery that has perplexed investigators for decades. Although Muldavin was never brought to justice for his crimes, the identification of Ruth Marie Terry and the determination of her killer have finally shed light on the dark events of the past. “We're in this time when the earth is activating this awakening, we're part of the immune system of the earth. So then, what do the kids need to hear? Do they need to hear the battles of the Civil War, the names of the Egyptian pharaohs, the capitals of the States? Or do they need to hear that they're magical beings, threaded to a living earth? That's what they need to hear everyday from us adults, and we need to give them the evidence for that.”This week, we are joined by Paul Astin and Jenny Griffiths, the co-founders of Manzanita School & Institute, a nature-based school in Southern California. Founded in 2014, Manzanita challenges educational paradigms and nurtures the whole child through its unique indoor-outdoor curriculum blending rigorous academics, land stewardship (including a working organic farm), and the study of local ecology on its 21-acre campus and the protected lands that surround it. This is an incredibly inspiring conversation that you won't want to miss. Jon, Aidan, and Sarah were all moved to tears on multiple occasions. We discuss the genesis of the school, what they believe the role of teachers is in helping students at different stages, what the latest research says about the role nature connection plays in education, and how we help students create and reinforce an empowering narrative about themselves and the role they have to play as members of our society and stewards of the earth.About Paul & JennyDr. Paul Astin, Ed.D. and Jenny Griffiths, M.A., are longtime educators and Topangans who founded Manzanita in 2014 with the intention to create a new and meaningful alternative to the existing education system—one that honors the unique community and landscape of the Santa Monica Mountains, while preparing students to become independent thinkers and confident, embodied leaders in a rapidly changing world.Dr. Paul has worked in education for over 30 years. Barry and Abigail discuss Drag by k.d. lang and sample Theoretical Jam, Maduro Brown Ale, and Fancy Papers™ from Cigar City Brewing in Tampa, Florida. Listen to the original versions of the songs that k.d. lang covered on this album! Barry compared the ominous-sounding outro of Don't Smoke In Bed to Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey. We played a bit of The Hollies' version (in Barry's eyes, the definitive version) of The Air That I Breathe. We discussed in depth the lyrics of Steve Miller Band's The Joker, eventually going on a tangent that led to Clap For the Wolfman by The Guess Who and The Letter by The Medallions. Abigail compared k.d. lang's vocal performance in Your Smoke Screen to Shana Cleveland's performance on Manzanita. Barry compared the song to Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. Congratulations to Jeff “Jafo” Shettler! At time of episode release, his bonus episode, Bonus: Pink Floyd Leftovers (Pink Floyd and brewLAB Leftovers) is our most listened-to episode of all time. We discussed the incredible backstory of Till the Heart Caves In, which is a “cover” of a Roy Orbison song that was never recorded. lang and Orbison had a previous connection as lang performed in Roy Orbison & Friends - A Black and White Night in 1988. Read more about the special! We believe that Jane Siberry wrote Hain't It Funny specifically for k.d. lang. On Siberry's album, “Hain't It Funny” is preceded by k.d. lang, a series of recorded voicemails between Siberry and lang. [originally published on Patreon February 27, 2024] I begin with an extended meditation about Arbenz's position in 1951 and the state of the Guatemalan economy. This leads to a discussion of Decree 900, the agrarian reform bill which was passed in 1952. I discuss what it did and did not entail and compare it to Mexico's agrarian reform law as well as the US Alliance for Progress recommendations later. Despite this, United Fruit Company's leadership began to close ranks and draw up battle plans. That leads us to a natural question: who exactly owned UFC, anyway? I discuss UFC ownership particularly through the various boards of directors both before and after the Zemurray era. Unsurprisingly, it consists of many Boston Brahmins and, for lack of a better term, the Power Elite from the US, the UK, and Germany. At one point, the Swedes try, successfully, to buy in. I make a major tangent via UFC vice president Arthur Pollan and his feud with Honduran communist Manuel Cálix Herrera, whose story I also share. Then, discussing Zemurray's new guard, I bring up Hillyer Vaughn Rolston and the curious case of the Rolston Letter. The Rolston Letter is like a mini-Dreyfus Affair, which occurred shortly before la gran huelga de 1954, the great strike of 1954 in Honduras. I analyze various analyses of the Rolston letter which allows us to discuss the Honduran coup of 2009. This, in turn, allows us to discuss the less-known ZEDES, or economic development zones, which are attempting to break up and sell off Honduran sovereignty piece by piece, as in the case of Próspera in Roatán, Honduras. Finally, I discuss the occulted nature of family trusts and how the blood-soaked stolen wealth of Central America exists in perpetuity in New England sending many a failson and faildaughter to clown colleges or academic sinecures for perpetuity. note: I wrote the baleada thread after I wrote this episode, and it weaves through much of this history - https://twitter.com/JimmyFalunGong/status/1755993585890054451 Songs: Wealth Won't Save Your Soul by Hank Williams Jr. El Machangay, a song from the Great Strike of 1954 Verde by Manzanita
Barry and Abigail and special guests Matty and Maddie Carlson discuss Manzanita by Shana Cleveland and sample La Playita and El Farito from The Tank Brewing Co. in Miami, Florida. With this appearance, Matt, who literally just founded our five-timers' club, is the inaugural member of our six-timers' club. Barry called him the Larry "Bud" Melman of Pops on Hops. Abigail and Barry both entered Light on the Water into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music: Abigail with a comparison to Baby Genius by Eels, and Barry with a comparison to Rain by Hans Zimmer. Abigail shouted out Hoplark, which brews nonalcoholic hop teas! Maddie used Gold Tower to talk about her interest in tarot. Read more about the tower card! Matt compared Ten Hour Drive Through West Coast Disaster to 9th & Hennepin by Tom Waits. Though we didn't discuss it in this recording, Matt is one of the most prolific men we know. He is a member of Harborcoat, The Stick Arounds, and The Pantones, in addition to touring as a solo act. In fact, Matty is probably coming to a city near you! Check out his tour dates! Vessel strike suspected in Nehalem whale death The necropsy results are out for the dead whale that washed up on the beach in Manzanita: bruising and internal bleeding suggest the whale died from a vessel strike. We'll talk about this unfortunately not uncommon cause of whale death on the West Coast, and about some measures taken along the coast of California to route ships away from areas where whales are known to be. And about other voluntary measures ship operators can take to avoid whales. Show transcript here: http://shipreport.nfshost.com/audio/SRTranscript060324.pdf

Rockaway Beach does not usually make the lists of best beach towns. Narrow it down to the north Oregon coast specifically, and it still faces stiff competition with Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Astoria, Seaside and Pacific City. That could be even more reason to go. On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we take a weekend trip to Rockaway Beach to discover all the overlooked destination has to offer. With corn dogs, ice cream, fried fish and kitschy shops, it definitely has a classic beach town vibe, while the beaches themselves can be expansive, quiet and beautiful. Here are some highlights from this week's show: What's the deal with Rockaway Beach anyway? Why Pronto Pup is corn dog church. Exploring the many beach access points. Christmas came late this year for Bike Life Radio. We gathered together some bike-specific Christmas songs and combined that with an interview with Manzanita Cycles custom frame builder Nick Jensen. BIKE LIFE Radio is a show on KWNK where we talk to people about their bikes and lives—presented by Ky Plaskon & the Truckee Meadows Bike Alliance. Ky has been commuting by bike to work for more than 30 years. He also worked in radio and TV for over 20 years from Alaska to San Diego, Las Vegas, Reno, and Sacramento. Last summer, Oregon made national headlines as timbers from the infamous Beeswax Wreck were discovered along the North Coast near Manzanita. The Beeswax Wreck, named for one of the products the ship carried, is said to be one of the inspirations for the beloved film, “The Goonies.” The wreck has also attracted the attention of treasure hunters in the past, searching for signs of its wreckage or anything it may have been carrying onboard. Now, a new documentary and podcast series shares the story behind one of those treasure hunters in its first episode. “The True Quest for Fabled Treasure on the Oregon Coast,” is episode one of the new series, “Secrets of the Mysteries.” The documentary will be screening Dec. 10 at the Clinton Street Theater. JB Fisher is the executive producer for the series. Tony Altamirano is the director. They both join us to share more on the supposed treasure lost along the Oregon Coast.
The Refindery in the tiny coastal town of Wheeler is not your typical thrift store. For one thing, you won’t find secondhand clothes for sale. But if you’re looking for a 1986 wall calendar, a used door hinge that still works or that missing piece for a Monopoly board game, you might be in luck. The Refindery invites visitors to reimagine and repurpose items otherwise destined for the landfill, like the glass fish and salvaged seashells mounted inside a vintage television displayed in the store. It also hosts a monthly event where community members can bring in broken vacuum cleaners, lamps and other objects for repair by a team of volunteers. The Refindery and the Repair Café are operated by Heart of Cartm, a nonprofit formed in 2021, which grew out of a volunteer-run recycle transfer center started in Manzanita three decades ago. Jessi Just, the executive director of Heart of Cartm, joins us to talk about her organization which was recently profiled in Oregon ArtsWatch, and its ongoing work to reduce and reimagine waste on Oregon’s North Coast.

Today we cover the grand larceny trial of Guy Rockwell, and the lack of a homicide trial for Manzanita or Dolores Mearns. We also discuss the fact that Guy married Ruth Marie Terry in 1974, months before her partially dismembered body was found. Ruth was identified as the Lady of the Dunes on Halloween 2022. Today we discuss the vibrant 37 year old, long missed by her beloved family in Tennessee, who never gave up hope. Dolores, Manzanita and Ruth may not have been the only people ‘Raoul' Guy Rockwell Muldavin (allegedly) brutally murdered. Anyone who has information about the whereabouts about Muldavin and Terry in 1973 and 1974 are asked to contact Massachusetts State Police at 1-800-KAPTURE.
In part 2 of 3, we discuss the mountain of evidence indicating Guy Rockwell, (who married Ruth Marie Terry, aka ‘The Lady of the Dunes' in 1974), brutally murdered his second wife, Manzanita and her daughter, Dolores Mearns in Seattle, in April of 1960. We'll discuss what he was up to when authorities were searching for him, eetail his complicated con game, and reveal where he was eventually found.
If you've ever wanted to rise and heal to a level beyond what you ever thought possible or thought you needed, then do we have the Blue Mind resilience show for you. Today I'll be talking with a dear friend and hero, the true keeper of the sea, Dr. Wallace J. Nichols about a topic that is near and dear to both of our hearts, rising from the ashes, what it means, how we do it, and why it's most important to have a mission now more than ever. Wallace "J" Nichols, the "Keeper of the Sea" and author of "Blue Mind" lost his house to fire. But instead of simply going into mourning, he's using this time and experience to be reborn, to see the world anew, and to see his life aflame with new possibilities. This is an incredibly inspiring, uplifting, powerful, and tear-shedding interview. If you're going through fires in your own life, literal or metaphorical, then this interview is for you. Dr. Wallace J. Nichols is a visionary, entrepreneurial scientist, renowned marine biologist, voracious earth and idea explorer, wild water advocate, and the best-selling author of one my favorite must-read books and documentaries, “Blue Mind” Key Points Discussed: Losing his home in a wild fire right after his daughter left for college and the letter he wrote her about it that went viral Building a mighty home where every single thing was meaningful and thoughtful The stunning and humbling experience of losing all of his material accumulations over his lifetime Rediscovering his home in a new format and the idea of writing to the spirit of his home and doing some more journaling The beautiful, unusual, and unexpected storm in California that they were inadequately prepared for The epitome of resilient beings that is red wood trees Learning from the cleansing and destructive aspect of fire and how it differentiates from learning from water Being an activated Pine seed sitting on top of a deep Manzanita root Understanding the dynamic of the fire, earth, water connection How he is more clear now on his short and long term mission for healing the water and land Have you spent time in the water yet and what does it mean to you? The deep response that all living beings have to “Water or lack of water” The importance of honoring urgency and recognizing the stress and anxiety it causes What does breath and resilience mean to you?
