On episode 2 of "Inside the SCCA" I talk with Heyward Wagner -- he's the Senior Director of Rally, Solo and Experiential Programs for SCCA. From this position, he works with the teams that deploy Track Night in America, the Time Trials National Tour and the National Solo Series and the staff that provides support for the Regional Solo, Track Events, Time Trials, Rally, RallyCross and Hillclimb programs. That's the title but Heyward has been a part of the club for decades. He and I have known each other since we played with cars at Road Atlanta in the 1990's. We talk about "club culture" and the challenges that come with being so many things to so many car crazy people. I also remember Howard "Duck" Allen -- another pillar of the club who has taken his final checkered flag. Today on The Parc Ferme’s Cambered Corner we have pleasure of welcoming the SCCA’s Director of Marketing and Experiential Programs, Heyward Wagner, to talk about the recent revival of experience-driven events at race tracks around the country and specifically the renewal of the SCCA Time Trials program and the continuation of Track Night in America. Track Night in America is an experiential program started in 2015 as a low-cost way to bring car enthusiasts to race tracks across the United States and experience what it's like to drive at speed on a proper road course. Since it's inception, it has proven wildly popular, drawing from a much larger demographic than those who would typically dive into full-fledged, wheel-to-wheel road racing. Given the success of the Track Night in America program, the Heyward Wagner's SCCA Experiential Programs team has revived the Time Trials program, what was formally known as Solo I. We talk with Heyward about the origins and impetus for both the Track Night in America and the Time Trials programs.

Paul Newman was a fixture in the car racing universe. How did it happen? Winning. Newman saw the script for the 1969 movie about a car racer and his love life and decided to make sure it was elevated from movie-of-the-week status to big budget box office picture.  Winning was about a race car driver who focused on succeeding at Indianapolis at the expense of his marriage. And it kind of sucked. Joining us is Heyward Wagner, Director of Experiential Programs for the Sports Car Club of America.
