Send a textCheating in cycling… should we just accept it will always happen?Four months into her new role as the president of the anti-doping Movement for Credible Cycling, Emily Brammeier joins us to discuss the MPCC's aims and ambitions, 19 years into its existence, how the cycling and anti-doping landscape has changed since then, and the suspicions that still hang over the sport. We also chatted about the need to tackle the so-called medical ‘grey area' exploited by teams and riders seeking an edge – which she described as pro cycling's greatest modern challenge – the success of the MPCC in proactively leading the way when it comes to ‘grey area' issues such as tramadol and carbon monoxide, and her and the group's plans for the future in a sport where, Emily says, there will always be people looking to cheat.
The BikeRadar podcast is back again, with Simon von Bromley joining Jack Luke to discuss the hottest tech stories in cycling. With the Tour Down Under kicking off the WorldTour season in Australia, pro racing is back. The race once again opened with a road bike time trial, which Simon thinks is fantastic. Jack and Simon are less enamoured with Van Rysel's recently revealed FTP2 concept e-road bike, however. Having caught plenty of attention online, Simon explains why he thinks it shows Van Rysel doesn't understand what bike racing is really all about. Following this is the news that Canyon is looking to cut 320 jobs from its workforce – is this simply a post-COVID correction or a sign of something worse? For our rant of the week Jack and Simon discuss 32in wheels – the bike industry seems convinced, but we're not so sure. We finish up with last week's top tech story, which was the Aerobag airbag for cyclists. Spotted by Jack at the Velofollies trade show in Belgium, it does exactly what it says on the tin, and apparently already has backing from a WorldTour team. Is this the future of cycling safety? Send us a textOn the evening of Tuesday 23 May 2019, Ben Hetherington's life changed forever. Ben, then 23-years-old and one of the most exciting young prospects in British cycling, was racing a local 10-mile time trial when he was struck by a motorist who turned right across the carriageway's eastbound lanes after failing to give way. Ben suffered serious, life-threatening injuries in the crash, including a traumatic brain injury, and spent several weeks in an induced coma and three months in hospital. He eventually returned to para-cycling and continues to pick up top results. However, after the motorist was cleared in the criminal courts, Ben pursued civil proceedings against the driver – who then claimed the cycling club who organised the time trial (and Ben) were actually the ones at fault. Earlier this year, the driver's case was dismissed in what has been described as an “important decision” for grassroots cycling clubs.Ryan sat down with two lawyers who worked on the case, Laura Murphy and Martin Porter, to discuss what that judgement means for time trialling in Britain, for cycling clubs staging any kind of event on open roads, and for the volunteers who help make it all possible – and also why cyclists should expect better from the police investigating crashes.
