Rob Dyson is a New York based businessman and retired professional racing driver with a long association with Watkins Glen International and the International Motor Racing Research Center. Following completion of his licensing school at Watkins Glen in 1974, Dyson began competing in amateur SCCA competition. In 1981 he won the Sports Car Club of America's GT2 national championship. Dyson began racing professionally in IMSA GTO and the SCCA Trans-Am Series in 1982. The following year, to support his professional racing efforts, Dyson founded the Dyson Racing Team, which over the next few years grew to be one of America's premier sports car racing teams. From it base in Poughkeepsie, over the course of nearly four decades the team won 19 championships, 72 race victories, started 72 times from the pole and achieved 224 podium finishes. Among the team's notable accomplishments is a pair of overall victories in America's premier endurance race, the Rolex 24, at Daytona International Speedway. The team fielded cars during the heyday of the IMSA Camel GT, winning its first time out with a Porsche 962 at Lime Rock Park. Under Dyson's leadership the team went on to successfully field entries in Indy car, the World Sports Car Championship, the United States Road Racing Championship, the American Le Mans Series (where the team scored two championships), the Rolex Sports Car Series, and the Pirelli World Challenge, where the team scored Bentley's first-ever North American race victory. During his 21 seasons as a professional racing driver Dyson drove in 92 races, scoring four overall race wins (including the 1997 Rolex 24 at Daytona) and a total of 18 podium finishes. Dyson continued to compete episodically in professional racing through 2007 and today remains active driving his collection of vintage Indy cars in a variety of demonstration events. Dyson's personal historic Indy car collection ranges from a 1913 Isotta Fraschini tipo IM  to Johnny Rutherford's 1978 Budweiser McLaren M24B, and includes the 1961 Kimberly Cooper Climax, the first successful rear-engine car to compete in the 500. Named chairman of the board of directors of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum in 2021 following a decade as a member of the board, Dyson is guiding the institution through its $89 million transformational renovation as it charts its future path as the repository of the history and related artifacts of America's oldest active and most storied racing facility. In 2011 Dyson donated to the IMRRC the historic archives of National Speed Sport News, America's premier motorsports news publication since the late 1930s. Dyson is the chairman and chief executive officer of Dyson-Kissner-Moran Corporation, a privately-owned international holding company. Well, what a difference a week makes! While we were congratulating ourselves on such a nice little program on behalf of our "skeleton crew" of diehards after last week...it sure is good to have the whole team together again! Yes, JD and Gigi are back, we're ready for our farewell to September edition of the John Clay Wolfe Show--and we've got a LOT to offer! John's pal Adam Carolla stops by to talk about what may be the Hollywood/SCCA Auto Racing collection that beats them all: the models driven by the great Paul Newman in countless Sports Car Club of America, Le Mans, and Trans-Am races...PLUS, Joe Exotic gets us all caught up on life in Federal prison with no power for a number of days, his disdain for President Zelenskyy and other generally goofy notions, and his hope for winning a full appeal and quick release--possibly this year (let's just hope none of the judges on his motion to appeal panels are from the Ukraine)! Of course, JD Ryan has an astounding collection of breaking news stories and curious tidbits, including an Arkansas pastor who some think may be the secret identity of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley--and yes, we've got him on the show! Meanwhile, the Colonel, Mike Turley, brings us every angle (and some VERY useful betting odds) on this week's College and NFL football matchups, Gigi gives us levity and insight on an endless variety of current events and pop culture savvy, and Bobbo's got a new "one-liner" for just about every facet of this week's conversation. And don't forget, DJ PreKay is a creative genius, with a listen to his "bare bones" start at crafting a new Hip-Hop/Gangsta take on ABBA's "Dancing Queen," and of course you'll get our own inimitable take on Music, world news and politics...and a whole "Zip A Dee Doo Dah" vibe! So stop on by, and prepare to be entertained--the Wolfe Pack is in rare form this week, y'all! Glad to have you along. Cheers!

Peter Brock is an American automotive design and motorsports legend. At age 19, while attending Art Center School, Brock became the youngest designer ever hired by General Motors' design department. In November 1957, legendary GM stylist, Bill Mitchell, selected one of Brock's sketches to become the iconic 1963 Corvette Stingray. After securing his SCCA racing license at 21 years old, he acquired an ex-Le Mans Cooper and returned to California to pursue a career in racing. He landed at the famed Max Balchowsky's Hollywood shop. His next move would be as Carroll Shelby's first employee, running the newly-formed Shelby School of High-Performance Driving. Soon he was working for Shelby American, where he penned logos, merchandise, ads, and car liveries. He designed the Shelby components of the Shelby Mustang GT350s, and his renowned Shelby Daytona Cobra coupe won the FIA GT World Championship. Following his success at Shelby, he founded Brock Racing Enterprises. Brock put the previously-unknown Japanese car maker, Datsun, on the map. The BRE prepared Datsun's dominated SCCA racing, winning on Sunday --and selling on Monday. In 1967, he ventured to Baja with Mary McGee to race in the first Mexican 1000. The experience led to an obsession with off-road racing, and the desolate peninsula. Brock returned to lead the Datsun factory race team for the next three years. Since those early days, he's repeatedly covered the Baja 1000 as a journalist. In 2010, the Art Center College of Design awarded Brock their Lifetime Achievement Award for "Outstanding accomplishment in the fields of automotive design, technology, innovation, motorsports, and journalism." He was inducted into the Sports Car Club of America Hall of Fame in 2017. Follow Peter Brock on Facebook here. Learn more about Peter Brock and BRE here.

I then reflect on the year of 2020 around the hobby and offer a sneak peek into the COHORA Winter into Spring schedule for 2021 and the events set to take place around the hobby. We want to dedicate this episode to John Cukras and Oscar Koveleski. John passed on the morning of November 30th 2020, and Oscar on December 29th. Both were big figures in our tiny hobby, and contributed a large part to the golden age of hobby in the 1960s. John is also responsible for designing the Tyco 440x2 chassis which became a force in HOPRA racing from the mid 80's to the early 90's, and someone a lot of us racers looked up to. Oscar was a Sports Car Club of America Hall of Famer who founded AutoWorld, a mail order catalog specializing in slot cars, RC cars and models which was an essential pathway for many racers to get parts in the 1960's, and continued to promote and support the hobby up until his unfortunate passing. We all here at H.O Racing Today would like to send our sympathies to their friends and family, and their legacies will live on. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ho-racing-today/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ho-racing-today/support

Building and driving his own VW race cars, Alan went on to win several national competitions including four 24-hour endurance races. Alan discontinued racing in 2002, this allowed him more time to focus his efforts on building German Car Depot into what it is today, South Florida’s dealer alternative for expert German car auto repair. From Skateboarding legend to autocross state champion to repair shop owner Alan ‘Ollie’ Gelfand has a great story and he is not bashful to tell it. Will your customer respond to a change to fewer days. Challenge to find a tech to work six days. Workaround your techs schedules to give them some time. Customers and techs have a seven day a week life. Bill would like to go to a 5 day a week but bring up a great argument to stay at 6. He provides flexibility in his schedule to help his people accommodate their life. Scheduling creativity, if you have enough techs could work 4 ten hour days. Alan is using Craigslist for hiring with rewards. Alan is a 6 day a week shop doing 20-25% of his weekly volume on Saturday. His guys can turn a lot of hours on a Saturday. In his ads to find techs he always talks about a four day work week. He has different pay plans for techs depending on what works best for them. He needs 160 hours per week to earn a great living. Alan does not work on Saturday. Saturdays are a lot of oil changes and maintenance. They have six loaner cars. Never have enough. He would go to 5 if he could find the techs to knock out the work. Has 50% – 70% appointments German dealers are open on Saturday and one if open on Sunday. Parts is not an issue on Saturday. Earns 21% new customers each month. New customers come in on Saturday. They drive by the shop before deciding. Curb appeal and a nice waiting room is a must. If you stay good on Yelp you are great in South Florida. Bill is looking to convert his 6-day shop into different workpieces to create a four day work week for techs. You have to outrun your expenses so you need to have...

Heyward Wagner joins me to talk about what the Sports Car Club of America is up to, and why. We talk about how the club’s focus is on converting car and driving enthusiasts into participants (I love this!), and they’re all about having fun with cars. Specifically, we dive into SCCA road racing, autocross, Track Night In America, and the new focus on Time Trials. Heyward is the Director of Marketing and Experiential Programs for the SCCA. The son of parents involved in the SCCA, he’s lived and breathed autocross, corner marshaling, rally and rallycross, and club road racing his entire life. But it’s what he learned being a summer camp counselor that has had the biggest impact on how he contributes to the many positive changes the SCCA has seen in the past few years.  Check out: scca.com www.tracknightinamerica.com

Paul Newman was a fixture in the car racing universe. How did it happen? Winning. Newman saw the script for the 1969 movie about a car racer and his love life and decided to make sure it was elevated from movie-of-the-week status to big budget box office picture.  Winning was about a race car driver who focused on succeeding at Indianapolis at the expense of his marriage. And it kind of sucked. Joining us is Heyward Wagner, Director of Experiential Programs for the Sports Car Club of America. Heyward has first hand knowledge of Newman's impact on the SCCA racing scene and agrees with James and Sid that the movie kind of sucked. How accurate was its portrayal of various forms of racing? What good came from the movie? (Spoiler: Lots of good came from the movie) Can a "great" racing movie be made today? Follow @ReelsandWheels and subscribe on Stitcher and iTunes. While the combination of USF2000, Pro Mazda and Indy Lights makes for an excellent program for those seeking a career in IndyCar, it's lack of inclusion in the Super License program makes it a challenging path for those seeking a career in Formula 1. Paul gives us the complete details on the origins of the Formula 4 program, how it fits into the SCCA Pro Racing program, and into the larger American junior formula car racing landscape.
