Communication is ‘an essential duty' of a pharmacist and the cornerstone of quality patient care. And yet, it continues to be one of the most common frustrations reported by preceptors when working with students and residents. Many factors may be at play, including a pandemic, as well as a digital society where so much communication happens in quick, abbreviated bytes. On this episode, guest Christine Klein reminds us of the many facets of communication, the complex range of reasons some students and residents may struggle, and how we as mentors and teachers can support their development in this area effectively.HostKathy Schott, PhDVice President, Education & OperationsCEimpactGuestDr. Christine Klein, PharmDVice-Chair for Experiential EducationClinical Associate ProfessorMercer University College of PharmacyGet CE: CLICK HERE TO CPE CREDIT FOR THE COURSE!CPE Information Learning ObjectivesAt the end of this course, preceptors will be able to:1. Many of us avoid giving feedback because it can feel negative and uncomfortable. We're afraid of a poor reaction from the student and we really don't want to hurt their feelings – after all – they already have so much pressure on them. And let's be honest - sometimes, we just want to be liked. And yet as preceptors, giving good feedback is probably one of the most important jobs we have. If our learners – whether students or residents - are going to be successful, deliver excellent patient care, and even keep patients safe, they've got to hear some tough feedback every now and again. If we're being truthful – so do we.Dr. Shannon James from Husson University joined me for a discussion about giving good feedback to learners. Sometimes teaching isn't "telling" but "asking" - asking questions that encourage students and residents to problem-solve in a stepwise manner. Listen in as we discuss a teaching strategy that builds confidence and encourages curiosity in your learners. We've all heard students and residents complain about ‘pimping' from preceptors during rotations or during their residency experience. Pimping has given a bad name to what can truly be a very effective teaching strategy when done right – Socratic Questioning.  In this month's episode, I'm speaking with Lindsay Davis of Midwestern University – Glendale, and Kevin Carrasco, a preceptor who has jumped on the Socratic Questioning bandwagon after experiencing what a difference it has made in his effectiveness as a preceptor. During our conversation – they debunked many of the assumptions often made about Socratic questioning as a teaching method and also gave some great advice on how to approach this method in a trusting and safe way for learners.Download this pocket guide, then listen in to get started! HostKathy Schott, PhDCEimpact GuestsLindsay DavisLindsay E. Whose job is it to teach risk management principles to pharmacy learners? Sure – they have to take a law course as part of their curricular requirements, but how much does that mean to them until they are in real life situations as part of their IPPEs, APPEs, or residency? As preceptors, it's important that we not only recognize and manage the legal risks of welcoming pharmacy learners within our pharmacy practice but also that we are prepared to teach practical concepts such as risk management in addition to developing their clinical skills. Having herself been exposed to personal development Leah Fink is passionate about helping people develop skills in self-awareness and mental health.  She is especially enthusiastic about developing youth on the journey because of the benefit she derived from similar experience, and because it provides an exceptional foundation from which to benefit throughout life.  The programs bring together self-awareness, mental health resiliency, and skills development before the person requires those skills in a stressful, or crisis, life situation.Experiential programs, ideally outside of the “familiar” environment, potentially in the wilderness, very effectively develop strength within people, solidify relationships and provide purpose for living.  Although the COVID-19 restrictions have postponed the ability to meet in person Leah's group workshops maintain the core value of shared experience, in an online form.  They explore values, purpose, communication, conflict resolution, and more, through programs like True Colors® colour typography, and Right Use of Power power dynamics. For the benefit of mental health while managing infections Leah recommends against “social distancing” in favour rather of “physical distancing”.  People require ongoing social interaction for mental health; social distancing is destructive as people must feed their social connectivity for wellbeing.Tune in to hear about The need for proactive skills development, including resilience – don't wait for a big challenge. Specifically, we dive into SCCA road racing, autocross, Track Night In America, and the new focus on Time Trials. Heyward is the Director of Marketing and Experiential Programs for the SCCA. The son of parents involved in the SCCA, he’s lived and breathed autocross, corner marshaling, rally and rallycross, and club road racing his entire life. But it’s what he learned being a summer camp counselor that has had the biggest impact on how he contributes to the many positive changes the SCCA has seen in the past few years.  Check out: scca.com www.tracknightinamerica.com

Track Night in America is an experiential program started in 2015 as a low-cost way to bring car enthusiasts to race tracks across the United States and experience what it's like to drive at speed on a proper road course. Since it's inception, it has proven wildly popular, drawing from a much larger demographic than those who would typically dive into full-fledged, wheel-to-wheel road racing. Given the success of the Track Night in America program, the Heyward Wagner's SCCA Experiential Programs team has revived the Time Trials program, what was formally known as Solo I. We talk with Heyward about the origins and impetus for both the Track Night in America and the Time Trials programs.
