Donald Trump ripping families apart at the border and caging children, the Coronavirus surge, Black Lives Matter, Election 2020, Attorney General Barr and the Mike Flynn case are just a few of the subjects we tackle this week on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show when joining Halli at her table are Rosy Pablo Cruz and Julie Schwietert Collazo the co-authors of THE BOOK OF ROSY, A MOTHER'S STORY OF SEPARATION AT THE BORDER and Former White House correspondent and Time and Newsweek veteran Matthew Cooper. We begin with our weekly take on all things politics when Halli and Matt slice and dice all things politics, and Donald Trump, too. The coronavirus is surging all across America and Donald Trump seems to care less, taking his re-election show on the road, contributing to the spread of the virus. His polls are devastating, but that isn't stopping him. Joe Biden is leading in all the battleground states. We discuss, but that's just where we begin. In our second half-hour don't miss a truly extraordinary interview with Rossayra Pablo Cruz, a Guatemalan refugee who along with two of her children, aged 5 and 15, made the arduous 5000 journey to America to save her family from the violence that has upended her country, and cost her husband his life. The first Central American mother who had her children ripped away from her by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) to tell her story in book form, Rosy's account of her harrowing experience is a gripping shaming story of the human cost of inhumane U.S. policies. THE BOOK OF ROSY is co-written by the woman who rescued Rosy from the hovel that is the detention center prison the U.S. government locked her in, and reunited her with her children, Julie Schwietert Collazo, founder of Immigrant Families Together the grassroots organization that reunites mothers and children, who also joins us.Immigration, Covid-19, Black Lives Matter, Election 2020, Mike Flynn, history, politics, Mike Flynn, Attorney General Barr -- all this week on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show, always available at Halli Casser-Jayne dot com and on whichever is your favorite app and on your Alexa device too. Several nonprofits are providing free legal representation and other services for immigrants and the families of those detained. United We Dream, the American Civil Liberties Union, Mijente, Immigrant Families Together, Save the Children and the Immigrant Justice Corps are coordinating advocacy and services at a national level. Local organizations providing legal aid include the New Sanctuary Coalition in New York, Las Americas in El Paso and Raices in Texas, Americans for Immigrant Justice in Florida and the Denver Immigrant Legal Services Fund in Colorado. Most charities say the best way to help is through financial donations, not product donations. Well-vetted groups that provide humanitarian aid to migrants include Pueblo Sin Fronteras, an organization with two shelters along the border of the Sonoran Desert, and Border Angels, a volunteer coalition that provides water, free legal help, and emergency services. You can also donate to Immigrant Families Together, a group started by women in New York, working to raise bond money for parents who were separated from their children at the border. They also work to arrange long-term housing and pro bono attorneys for immigrants while they await trial. (In one instance, Kristen Bell helped the organization reach the $30,000 bond goal for a mother named Delmi.) Julie Schwietert Collazo is the co-founder and director of Immigrant Families Together (IFT), an organization founded in response to the zero tolerance immigration policy initiated in 2018 that has resulted in the separation of thousands of immigrant parents and their children at the U.S./Mexico border. She brings her background as a bilingual journalist and former social worker to bear on her work with IFT, which raised more than a million dollars in just over six months, posting bond for more than 73 detained parents, grandparents, and older siblings who were separated from children. The ongoing work of IFT involves providing support to these families— housing, legal counsel, medical/dental/mental health care, and other necessities— as they proceed with their immigration cases. She is currently writing a book with one of the mothers affected by the zero tolerance policy. The book will be published in English and Spanish editions by HarperOne. One day Julie Schwietert Collazo heard a report on WNYC about a mother who needed money to post bond and be reunited with her family. That was her aha moment, and the rest is history. Today, Julie and her husband, whom together co-founded Immigrant Families Together, have helped post bond for over 75 people and have raised over $1 million dollars to help asylum seekers. The organization has been overflowing with support across the 50 states; donations can range from the hundreds of thousands of dollars, to children and seniors donating $3 -$5. In this interview Diana and Julie discuss the heartbreaking hurdles and  hardships that asylum seeking parents face when they arrive. Posting bond is just step one out of detention, they are then alone in a world where they literally have nothing, and no support system. That's where Immigrant Families Together has stepped in, to offer not only bond and reunification but also to support them at a time when they are expected to not be a burden on society, but yet are not allowed to work. Sometimes to talk about good things we need to talk about bad things. We have to go into the darkness of the cave, but make sure we’re lighting lanterns along the way. Laura Grantham Broussard sat down with me for a visit on Find the Good News, and our conversation was a bit like that. Laura caught my eye online because she was one of the few voices ringing out in our area taking an active position of compassion and mercy for immigrants and asylum seekers. She’s one of the one’s lighting those lanterns on the way into the cave. If I’m being honest, I typically feel a good bit of fear when the subject of migrants, foreigners, asylum seekers, or border walls come up. These are volatile times, and as a past guest of the show once said, “You can’t change anyone’s mind anymore.” Still, that’s one of the unwritten missions of this little show, isn’t it? Shouldn’t we all make an effort to have honest and elevated conversations—even uncomfortable conversations—that might cause a shift in thinking or a change of heart? I’d say that’s the kind of conversation I have with Laura in this episode. She speaks frankly about the immediate needs of the families that she serves through the Immigrant Families Together network and reveals many of the catalysts for their migration to safer lands. What I really love about Laura Broussard is that she’s actually doing something. She’s not sitting on the sidelines. She’s using her voice on new media networks to help bend the bow toward social justice, but she’s also putting actual energy into serving our brothers and sisters, these children of creation—and that’s what they are—manifesting resources for families that are totally at the mercy of a stranger’s kindness. That hope for kindness is not what they always receive. Laura has that unique knack for looking at history to help generate her compassion. Because she can see where she’s come from, she can see others as herself, and in turn, treat them as she would want to be treated. She sees the common ground that we all share, the things that bind us, and that many of the comforts and securities we enjoy simply come from being born in the right place and the right time—good old fashioned luck. It’s easy to find voices stirring the pot with the long end of the stick, voices that use degrading rhetoric that dehumanizes immigrants, making their troubles easier to disregard. Laura understands that they are people—just like you and I—and they are the ones getting the short end of the stick in this pot we stir with our words. Laura Grantham Broussard, all of the locals that support her efforts, and the Immigrant Families Together network are using their words and works to help these people in desperate situations. Maybe there are lanterns hanging along the walls of the deep, dark cave. Maybe there’s a light on outside as well. Maybe people like Laura are helping to transform these dark spaces into comfortable and safe homes filled with love, friends, and resources. For mothers and fathers wandering far from their homes and wondering what’s next, I believe it’s the good news they’ve been praying and hoping for. ========== THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com FOR MORE INFO ABOUT LAURA GRANTHAM BROUSSARD & THE IMMIGRANT FAMILIES TOGETHER NETWORK >> www.facebook.com/lg.broussard and https://immigrantfamiliestogether.com/donate-to-a-mom
