You're listening to Find the Good News, Episode 122, “The Shifters,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Steve Taylor, author of "Extraordinary Awakenings: When Trauma Leads to Transformation" published by New World Library. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Just like a blind man that has discovered a jewel in a heap of rubbish, likewise, by some coincidence, an awakening mind has been born within me." With this simple, powerful turn of phrase, the Indian mystic Shantideva laid claim on my heart and framed my personal awakening experience over 25 years ago. It was a profound moment of illumination in the midst of deep personal pain and set in motion years of curious seeking, discovery, experience, and practice that has offered shelter over my life to this very day. Perhaps this was the reason I so enjoyed the new book by Steve Taylor, "Extraordinary Awakenings: When Trauma Leads to Transformation," and why I was so eager to have him visit me on "Find the Good News." Steve's new book is a collection of potent awakening stories spanning across a wide spectrum of traumatic human experiences such as imprisonment, war, addiction, depression, tragedy, and grief. He presents the common markers exhibited by the awakened—"shifters"—on the other side of a trauma experience. No stranger to these uncommon causes of awakening, Steve offers a view of minds-and-hearts dawning in plain view, in the shadowy-yet-lovely circumstances of human existence, and in the beautiful, bumpy, ordinary enlightened beings blooming around us in this "heap of rubbish." Now, I invite you to move beyond fundamentalism, past religious framing, and open yourself to the idea of your own potential for extraordinary awakening, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS — https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== LEARN MORE ABOUT STEVE TAYLOR — https://www.stevenmtaylor.com/about-steve-taylor/ BUY A COPY OF "EXTRAORDINARY AWAKENINGS" — https://www.stevenmtaylor.com/books/extraordinary-awakenings/ SEE MORE BOOKS FROM NEW WORLD LIBRARY — https://www.newworldlibrary.com/ ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES — www.ParkerBrandUp.com ==========
You're listening to Find the Good News, Episode 121, “The Raw Honey,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Kori Hahn, author of "Rituals of the Soul: Using the 8 Principles of Yoga to Create a Modern & Meaningful Life" published by New World Library. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Have you ever had to reinvent yourself, to start again? Did you find that there was a process of letting go, of unlearning, as you started to embrace the changes that came with your rebirth? Sometimes, it's difficult to use the pieces of our existing life as the compost for new growth, and it can often seem haphazard and clumsy, but with a fair amount of right effort and right attention, plus some helpful advice and guidance along the way, it is possible to build something new, whole, and more familiar and comfortable than we'd likely imagined possible. In the episode of Find the Good News, I visit with Kori Hahn, author of the new book "Rituals of the Soul: Using the 8 Principles of Yoga to Create a Modern & Meaningful Life," published by New World Library. In her book and through our conversation, Kori shares the textured and rich accounts of her own journey while imparting important Yogic wisdom in a digestible and engaging format I'd not yet experienced. What I found in Kori was someone who has searched for meaning and found it—even in the face of great personal loss—reborn with a passionate personal calling to help others find, cultivate, and embrace the sacred rituals evident in their own lives. Where they do not seem to exist, she shows how to create them, then lovingly encourages us to do so. Now, take a look at your life just as it, with all its twists and bends, all of its ordinary colors and tones, and prepare to discover anew the raw and extraordinary sacred hiding in plain sight, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS — https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== LEARN MORE ABOUT KORI HAHN — https://santoshasociety.com/kori-hahn/ BUY A COPY OF "RITUALS OF THE SOUL" — https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781608687527 SEE MORE BOOKS FROM NEW WORLD LIBRARY — https://www.newworldlibrary.com/ ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES — www.ParkerBrandUp.com ==========
You're listening to Find the Good News, Episode 120, “The Permission Slip,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Regina Louise, author of Permission Granted: Kick-Ass Strategies to Bootstrap Your Way to Unconditional Self-Love published by New World Library. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Is there something in your life that you feel you should have done, but you just couldn't find it in yourself to get started? Maybe you had an internal and unspoken checklist of reasons that you believed were valid enough to keep your personal passions and dreams in check. You might have thought that you weren't old enough, young enough, wealthy enough, educated enough, attractive enough, supported enough, nurtured enough,... normal enough (whatever that means). I can absolutely recall the times that my inner critic has clubbed me into submission, even as I sit down to share these words with you. What would happen if you and I stopped casting internal stones and stopped believing the negative stories we tell ourselves, and instead started a plan of self-encouragement that pushed us through the gravel of self-doubt? In this episode, I visit with Regina Louise, author of the new book "Permission Granted: Kick-Ass Strategies to Bootstrap Your Way to Unconditional Self-Love." Regina is an energetic light with an attractive vibe that makes you want to latch on to her message. It would be easy to say that she's overcome a lot in her life to get to this plateau where she can help others rise and thrive, but that simply doesn't do her story justice. She instead encourages us to wrap our arms around all the broken and damaged bits that weigh people down (that nasty checklist I mentioned earlier) and instead learn to grow through what we go through. In a world obsessed with celebrities, Regina uses her very real (and sometimes painful) story to advocate for the voiceless without the clout and fame that so many celebrities enjoy and squander. She wasn't groomed for success. Instead, Regina found a kind of truth in the bumpiness of her own edges. This allowed her to lay down false images of perfection that so many in our society cling to. In allowing her authentic self to blossom, unplugged from the dream of the mainstream, she now leans into and develops her natural gifts to help others realize the same self-love and personal freedom. Now, I encourage you to think about those fears and jeers you lay upon yourself, all those unnecessary fictions and frictions you've shackled yourself to, and find out what would happen if you loved yourself just as you are, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS — https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== LEARN MORE ABOUT REGINA LOUISE — https://www.iamreginalouise.com/ BUY A COPY OF "PERMISSION GRANTED" — https://www.amazon.com/Permission-Granted-Strategies-Bootstrap-Unconditional/dp/1608687260/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= SEE MORE BOOKS FROM NEW WORLD LIBRARY — https://www.newworldlibrary.com/ ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES — www.ParkerBrandUp.com ==========
You're listening to Find the Good News, Episode 119, “The Trembling Trees,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Jonathon Stalls, artist, writer, activist, and founder of Intrinsic Paths. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Have you ever had a transformative personal experience so profound, so mysterious, that escaped your ability to frame it with words? If you've listened to this program for any length of time then you likely know that I have had such an experience, a moment in this lifetime that seemed to change every other day after it or at least my perception of those moments. Many of my guests have intimately shared their experiences, and I am fascinated how across language barriers, geography, and varied circumstantial occurrences, so many walk through the transformative door and end up in similar places, motivated and invigorated to use their lives in the service of goodness, justice, mercy, and love. In this episode, I visit with a being who has shown up in the world with a genuineness that I deeply appreciate. My guest, Jonathon Stalls, is the founder of Intrinsic Paths, and his feet have carried him on a mission to inspire the people he encounters. Jonathon encourages us to embrace an unhurried, meditative way of being that has the potential to heal on a very deep and personal level, in turn offering the tools required to repair the desperate fissures in this world we all share. He did not come to this place without going through the Bardo of personal pain, which I feel largely influenced his visceral understanding of the aching his human brothers and sisters experience. By acknowledging this deep creaking in the world, he is able to fully embrace the joyous cacophony that we so often disregard in the hustle to "be someone." This is clear in Jonathon's deep love and connection to the unabashedly beautiful and simple things to be found in nature, which take on new and profound visual meaning through his artwork and nature-craft. Through his Pedestrian Dignity signal, he adopts a role as an advocate for our fellow beings that find themselves at the mercy of congested, poorly planned roadways and cities designed primarily for those of us with vehicles, cities, and communities that largely forget those that use their feet to carry them to school and work. It is my reflection that Jonathon Stalls, through his life and work, is holding up a living mirror to the world. What we find in him is a shimmering beauty firmly attached to a murky pain. In that, I find a type of truth that escapes words or full understanding, but in this conversation, Jonathon and I try to put prose to this mystery. Now, for just a little while, allow yourself to show up just as you are, with all your hopes and happiness, your failures and fears. You're listening to Find the Good News, Episode 118, “The Honored Struggle,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Wendy De Rosa, author of "Becoming An Empowered Empath: How To Clear Energy, Set Boundaries, & Embody Your Intuition" by New World Library. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Many longtime Find the Good News listeners would likely recall the number of times that I've brought the subject of empathy into these conversations in a very serious way. There have been times over the past two years where I've felt that I'd exhausted the topic, or rather exhausted myself in an attempt to express what being an empath has been like for me. As with most things, I've been exploring the boundary of my own experiences in an attempt to learn through the stories and experiences of others. Being an empath has offered the gift of deep listening and understanding on a level akin to actually feeling what others themselves have experienced. This is a great blessing to others when one is attempting to step into the role of consoler and healer, but it can also feel like a deep ache or heaviness when the wings of an empathetic heart are stretched and burdened beyond their capacity to carry the hurt of others. I, like many who go through life with naturally empathetic hearts, have likely felt a great moaning rise over the past decade, or longer. With so much pain and suffering, so much discord, dishevelment, and division, it is often hard to discern one's own feelings from the soup of signals we have moved through. In this conversation with Wendy De Rosa, author of the new book "Becoming An Empowered Empath: How To Clear Energy, Set Boundaries & Embody Your Intuition," I for the very first time, have a guest that clearly and openly speaks about the reality of being an empath. Wendy offers helpful perspectives and strong guidance on how to enhance day-to-day living through empathetic gifts, while not being consumed by the onslaught of feelings that are often not our own. Through her school of Intuitive Studies, Wendy assists students on their path of self-discovery through guided meditation, breathwork, and energy clearing. Wendy offers insights that bring comfort and healing to the soul. For me, it was an opportunity to open my empathetic heart in a space of safety with an individual that didn't require an explanation of who I am or who I behave. Wendy offered the gift that I so often wish I could give, the gift of a listening ear, an understanding mind, and a loving heart. Now, it's time to enter a space of safety and freedom, freedom to lay your burdens down for a short time, to let go of anything that's causing you grief, especially the pains that most can't see. Take a break from the entanglements of arrangements, habits, and identity, and allow yourself to just feel what you feel. Be with it, and know that it's okay. You're listening to Find the Good News, Episode 117, “The Weeping Sunset,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Rev. Dr. Kenneth Patrick, author of "Journeying to the End of Life: Discovering the Ancient Hospice Way of Companioning the Dying." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Often, it's in revisiting a conversation during editing that its value truly sinks in. As you may know, it could be several weeks, or even months, after I've had a visit with a guest before their episode is published. On many occasions, going back to listen to the conversation reveals little details I missed, or perhaps didn't key in on, while in the natural flow with a guest. Or, as I had happened with this particular episode, the world around me changes in ways that affect my interior landscape, giving new meaning to my guests' words. When considered in this light, editing becomes less a necessary task and more of a gift. My guest in this episode, Reverend Doctor Kenneth Patrick, an ordained Methodist Minister, gave me the great gift of his time, and it has acted as a prescription for what ails me as we face, yet again, another surge of the Covid 19 virus in the United States of America. The truth is, I've been circling the drain and have felt myself losing hope in my fellow beings' capacity to do the right thing, resolved to simply bear witness and weep privately for all the dismay and despair on full display. How am I to produce a show about finding the good when I clearly hold a tarnished view of those I would call human brothers and sisters? I need these episodes as much as anyone, I need to hear these good people doing good works in the world, people like Kenneth Patrick, who have dedicated their lives to the service of others, even though they too bear witness to the same calamities as I. Kenneth is the author of the book "Journeying to the End of Life," and in it he presents what he calls the "Ancient Hospice Way" of being a true companion and servant to the dying. In our conversation, Kenneth reveals that at a young age he made a type of pact with himself, that he would serve where people were suffering the most. You will discover, as I did, that he has spent his whole life doing that very thing. Kenneth advocates moving outside our comfort bubbles and into situations that require work, work that effectively changes the world in a real and tangible way so that it can truly meet and help others where they are. As an Army Chaplain, Kenneth brought solace and comfort to soldiers. As a compassionate social activist, he has hiked the Appalachian Trail solo—that's over 2,100 miles—to raise enough money to help the RAM house, a day shelter for the homeless in Virginia, an endeavor that has helped over 5,000 people, serving over 41,000 meals. All the experiences of his life have lead to his current passion, providing compassionate companionship and care to those facing the end of their lives, considering this to be the most vital social issue of our age. The hospice method that he presents brings patients, families, healthcare professionals, and faith communities together in unison to reduce the layers of suffering that occur during the sunset of life, outlining training and resources so human beings can die at home, with dignity, well cared for, surrounded by those they love. Now, if you are like me, if you are feeling the burden of a world in pain, weary from too much bad news, I invite you to listen to this conversation with a man that does not deny or turn away from the reality of the difficult age we find ourselves in, a man that encourages us to lean into our weeping during this time of sunset, and in the tears find a divine love. You're listening to Find the Good News, Episode 116, “The Burdensome Backpack,” A Road Trip episode featuring Mickey Shannon of Resource Management Services - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - After a much-needed summer break, Find the Good News is back with a special Road Trip episode. It had been quite a while since my last road trip recording, and while I didn't have to travel far to meet my guest, it was still refreshing to be out of doors. In this episode, I got to visit with Mickey Shannon under the great blue sky at Prien Lake Park in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Mickey and I share a common friendship with my high school speech teacher, and dear friend, Aleta Barnes, who, if you will recall from episode 33, has been more of a mentor than either of us realized at the time. I trust Aleta, so when she suggested that Mickey and I make a connection, I did so without hesitation. This pre-existing bond is a direct link in the Good News chain that led to my sitting across from Mickey on such a mildly breezy day, months before the summer slog-and-bake weather moved into Southwest Louisiana. Mickey is the CEO and President of Resource Management Services, a business that has been providing behavioral health services in Southwest Louisiana for over 25 years. Like most of us, Mickey is so much more than her official title, although after sitting with her, it is was very easy to see why she was called to service in her particular field. Honestly, this wasn't the first time I'd sat down to visit with Mickey under the clear blue sky. Not too long ago, she invited me to the peaceful bayou that borders her property to dig Iris flowers for transplant around my small lotus pool. On that day, we sat down on the soft grass of her front lawn and had a friendly visit there as well. Mickey is an artist, and if you seek out her works you'll find a comforting blend of local creatures and fauna, as well as a healthy dose of spiritual vision. It is clear to me that Mickey wants to improve the quality of the lives she comes in contact with, whether it be those in her close circles, or in the larger rings surrounding her community. Whatever you want to call this method of moving through life that Mickey Shannon has adopted is probably fine; she doesn't seem to concern herself too much with labels. Mickey is more intent on living as well as she can while being a blessing to others using her gifts and resources. I'd like to believe that there are more people in this world, especially in my community, like Mickey. She's a reminder to me that even if I don't see them, they are out there among us. That gives me a strong dose of comfort and resolve to keep taking these little trips to meet with people just like her. Now, it's time to get out of doors, get out of your head, and take a little drive with me, turn the wheel toward the good heart I found in Mickey Shannon, then press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS — https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== LEARN MORE ABOUT THE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT SERVICES — https://www.resourcemgtservices.com/ ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES — www.ParkerBrandUp.com ==========
You're listening to Find the Good News, Episode 115, “The Human Story,” featuring Christy Comeaux and Katie Pennington-Bartlett of the Calcasieu Parish Public Library - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you've been listening to Find the Good News for any length of time, I'm sure you've figured out that I, like so many, have an affinity for reading. My dad loved to read pocketbooks and comic books, and I am certain that I can draw a direct line from my love for both of those things to the yellowing pages in his collection of Doc Savage books that now sit on my bookshelf. Reading opened up worlds, seeded my imagination, and stimulated my curiosity at a young age. For all the wonders presented by the information age, I am thankful to have been born into a world decades before laptops, tablets, and smartphones started bending our necks. I recall loving the libraries in our community when I was a child. I would often ride my bicycle into town and make a stop there, library card in hand, looking for instructions for existing hobbies, or chance encounters with new interests. The Calcasieu Parish Public Library in my hometown was a refuge filled with information that nurtured my young mind. Looking back, I feel grateful, and I also realize that I was likely unappreciative of this social staple. In this episode of Find the Good News, I had the pleasure of revisiting many of these experiences in my conversation with Calcasieu Parish Public Library Information Officer, Christy Comeaux, and Calcasieu Parish Public Library Associate II with Branch Programming, Katie Pennington-Bartlett. This conversation put me face-to-face with the level of my ignorance related to all of the offerings and services the modern Calcasieu Parish Public Library provides. Certainly, the public library is, and will always be, a resource for those with an appetite for page-turning, but under the stewardship of passionate librarians, just like Christy and Katie, these repositories of diverse knowledge have become so much more. The library is an ecumenical hub that provides many free resources that some citizens would not have access to otherwise. As you'll learn in this conversation, our libraries are helmed by people that do much more than point citizens in the direction of their desired content; they are staffed by human beings that serve with open minds and listening hearts. I don't know where you live, but if you have a library in your community, I hope the spirit of this conversation with Christy and Katie will move you through its doors or motivate you to seek out its online portal. There, perhaps you'll find, as have, that a library isn't just a home for good books; it is a cradle that carries on the collective stories of humanity, town to town, city to city, one librarian to one curious seeker, all across the world. Now, ask yourself if you've got a current library card. If the answer is no, then take some time to get one. Prepare to meet your local librarian, who I am sure is eagerly waiting to assist you. You're listening to Find the Good News, Episode 114, “The Foldover Worlds,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Dream Analyst and Depth Psychologist, Tayria Ward. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I started having potent dreams on repeat when I was a young boy, mindscapes so dense with texture and gravity that it was not unusual for me to question whether the space I found myself in upon awakening wasn't in fact the dream. In my early twenties, these flavorful dreams—called such because I could taste them in my mouth—seemed to intensify, often bringing heavy imagery, charged with some type of misfortune. Still, other dreams—much brighter and lighter in tone—have had an almost vision-like quality, leading my heart and mind to some type of comforting sense of hope. I've spoken of these things on my other podcast, The Dawn Deacon. Over the years I've taken great care to hold these things close and safe, not sharing them openly. I've learned that sharing your dreams in a serious way isn't always taken very seriously, at least within most of the larger rings I've traveled. This started to change last year when I opened the door to this podcast to guests from outside my local community, and this is also how I met my friend, dream analyst, and depth psychologist, Tayria Ward. Tayria and I were in a group related to a book I'd featured on the show. There was quite a large number of people in the group, but Tayria's additions to the conversation were always insightful. One day she shared an image of her father, herself, and Buckminster Fuller. During my early age of exploration and discovery after an awakening experience, I'd landed in a sphere of curiosity surrounding Buckminster Fuller; his story fascinated me. The photo of Tayria with her father and Bucky breathed life into my old interest, so I reached out to her. We became fast friends through this node, and have stayed in a type of orbit since, eventually become letter-and-stamp pen pals, a form of communication that, thanks to Tayria's rich letters, I am learning to cherish all over again. Tayria's journey is as rich and textured as my young dreams, filled with the promise that there is more connective tissue between our slumbering minds and what most call the real world. What I admire most about Tayria is her willingness to kindly walk with others along the vastness of their dreamscapes, acting as a type of dream sherpa, bringing all her experience to each space or plateau. To me, she seems to stands on many layers at once, with an ability to perceive the overlapping slides between individuals and their personal dreams, as well as their experiences, looking for collective and synchronistic lock-ups that may hold greater meaning for everyone on earth. While our visit is about the layered worlds of visions and dreams, it is also grounded in very real experiences that play out in our dusty, ordinary lives. As you listen to my conversations with Tayria, I feel strongly that you will sense that firm tether to this realm of the real, and that you will find a great treasure, as I have, in getting to know Tayria Ward. Now, I invite you to find a fluid, flexible space that allows you to sink your consciousness a bit deeper than the solid footing near the shallows, allowing shifting mind-sand and heart-waves to make you question the direction gravity plays on your body, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS — https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== LEARN MORE ABOUT TAYRIA WARD — https://tayriaward.com/ DREAM SYMPOSIUM — https://tayriaward.com/dream-symposium/ ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES — www.ParkerBrandUp.com ==========

We all meet people in our lives through businesses, groups, events, and other gatherings, and if you're like me you may never get that opportunity to connect again outside of those collectives. Find the Good News has opened old doors and made seats at the table of conversation, and I feel lucky to have this resource to reconnect in a meaningful way. My guest in episode 113 —Scotty Higginbotham, the Business Development Outreach Coordinator for American Addiction Centers—is one of those people. It had been almost a decade since I'd met Scotty and almost as long since we'd spoken. At first blush, his job title and professional affiliation indicated that he was the type of guest that listeners would appreciate. What I discovered in taking this conversational journey is that the path he has tread to his role with American Addiction Centers was not without his own addiction challenges and ongoing recovery practices. What Scotty shares is honest and undiluted, a true portrait of what addiction looks like, how it affects human beings on the ground, those that love them, and the true face of those that meet our brothers and sisters, offering a hopeful hand in what is often their greatest moment of despair. He tells his story without pruning the details, leaving the thistles and thorns that sting. In my opinion, he must tell it this way so others, those he helps through his role, understand that he sees them because he has been them. This visit is a reminder for me that there are people, like Scotty, who are on call and ready to help those in the stranglehold of addiction, no questions asked. You're listening to Find the Good News, Episode 112, “The Fist Switch,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Paula Lazarz, Shaolin martial artist, Soto Zen Buddhist priest, and head instructor at Healthkick Kung Fu in Chicago, Illinois. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For most of my adult life, I've been looking for fixed truths, constants that can be identified over and again, no matter the unique circumstances and shifting forces in play. What I've found on this search is that the only fixed constant is that there really is no solid truth. Reality is made up of bumps, cracks, twists, and bends, and when all those nuanced layers come together we feel we've found a truth, or a way. If we sit with that perception long enough, we might be blessed to see that fixed thing dissolve or change before our very eyes. I share this perspective because it feels very much linked to the conversation I had with Shaolin martial artist and Soto Zen Buddhist priest, Paula Lazarz. Paula Lazarz is the lead instructor of Healthkick Kung Fu in Chicago, Illinois, a school that has been teaching the traditional arts of the Shaolin Temple to children and adults for over two decades. As someone that claims to practice Buddhism to some degree, I have been fascinated by the juxtaposition of the physicality of Shaolin Kung Fu with the seemingly docile meditation practices encouraged by most schools of Buddhism. In our conversation, Paula provides useful, grounded insight into how these two dance together. The truth is, she helped me better understand the relationship between the two, and make peace with my personal struggles of using firmness or force situationally. I left this conversation with a better grasp on how to wield the elements of passivity within me situationally, realizing that those gentle features are not always the right tools for a given moment. She reminded me that circumstances are always shifting and that it is very important to have eyes to see the changes, and diverse practices at the ready for whatever may arise. Find the Good News, Episode 111, “The Butterfly on the Battlefield,” featuring Justin Roberts of Echo Bravo Productions and the Do Good web series ========== Tragedy has a way of bringing people together and producing durable bonds, often shaping and directing people to new missions. Over again we see survivors of extreme situations and events take on news roles with great fervor, reentering the fray with a resolve to help others find hope as they make their way through difficult times. In this episode, I have the privilege of sharing my conversation with one such individual, former Army Chaplain Justin Roberts of Echo Bravo Productions and the co-host and producer of the web series Do Good. Do Good is a new web series focused on telling the stories of real people and real helpers who put their resources to work for the hurricane-battered citizens of the Louisiana Gulf Coast. As I sit to reflect on my conversation with Justin, it's not lost on me that Memorial Day is approaching, which is also a sign for many weather-weary that hurricane season is upon us once again. Normally, these two things would have no relationship with each other, but the trauma and remaining PTSD of war and natural disaster have come together in a unique way in Justin Roberts and his documentaries. In our conversation, Justin shares candidly the pain and beauty of his experiences as a wartime Army Chaplain in Afghanistan and reveals how a meaningful encounter with a fellow soldier, his co-host for the Do Good series, created a durable bond that helped each find ways to find hope again, offering the veterans a clarity of purpose in a shifting culture, and open space to speak truthfully and freely about their experiences. It was clear in our visit, and from watching the Do Good series, that Justin has found great value in connecting people to something good, something hopeful, something that reminds them of the best side of humanity. Justin goes so far as to say he has become an expert in finding hope, which he deems critical to his mental health and survival. Considering what Justin and his co-host have witnessed—a microcosm of war and despair that those of us living in safety, comfort, and abundance can barely imagine—it is an inspiration to bear witness as they use their skills to make peace and grow personally while not deleting or repressing some of the most painful experiences humans can endure. This conversation is a timely Memorial Day reminder that there are servicemen and women, right now, living in the churn, and many won't come home. It is also a reminder that many of my fellow citizens along the battered and blue-tarp-covered Louisiana Gulf Coast are holding their breath, watching the radar, hoping and praying for a reprieve that may or may not come this hurricane season. It would be my advice to watch Justin Roberts right now, and his Do Good web series and look for a reminder of that hope, that good news, that everyone is holding out for. Now, it's time to forget about all the things that divide us and tear us apart, and pay attention to people that, in spite of burdens, pain, and odds, turn their attention to helping others, then press play on a little good news. ========== LEARN MORE ABOUT THE "DO GOOD" DISASTER RELIEF SERIES >> https://dogoodarmy.com/ ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS >> https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com ==========
You’re listening to Find the Good News, Episode 110, “The Best We Can Be,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Kristi Hustad, author of "Be You... Only Better: Real-life Self-care for Young Adults (And Everyone Else)" published by New World Library - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I don't really know what it was like for my mom and dad to raise a family, trying to keep their kids entertained, happy, and healthy with all the supplies it takes to provide shelter, education, and some type of security. As hard as they worked—and I do know they worked hard—I know we still ended up being parents ourselves, each with childhood traumas and fears to pick through, tripwires and triggers that have affected the way we each made our way forward into adulthood. I can easily imagine that this is a story that's repeated over and again, and for all my sweat, blood, and tears, I am sure that I'm making mistakes right now that my children will have to work through. So, if our parents are doing their level best, and their parents did their level best, and we are doing our level best, what else can we do to help our young people gain firm footing as they move forward into this messy world—much messier than the one we came from—and try to piece together an adult life filled with hope, happiness, stability, peace, and success? This is where the work of my guest, Kristi Hugstad comes in with some answers in the form of her new book "Be You... Only Better: Real-life Self-care for Young Adults (And Everyone Else)." I'll be 47 years old this year, and while this book may be targeted to young adults, I found myself consuming it with shocking excitement. In this new book, Kristi Hugstad offers a holistic approach to prepare young people for the world their about to entire, offering useful, practical information and real-world scenarios related to the subjects of diet, sleep, money, time, mental health, exercise, gratitude, and mindfulness. It all added up to one that thing, an important thing that I find sorely lacking in the world today, and that is hope. In our visit, I learned that Kristi is full of hope, but it has been hard-won. Early in our conversation, you will discover what I discovered in reading her book, that it has been in journeying through great personal loss and deep grief that she has brought forth a message of self-betterment and healing. Even as I approach 50 years on this earth, I find that I need to encounter teachers like Kristi. She reminds me of the teachers and mentors that touched my life as a young person, and how their lessons are durable to this day. While this particular work may be for young adults, I found that I fall into the category of everyone else, and perhaps you will discover this as well. I left our conversation feel refreshed and even more motivated to offer my children the best version of me, a self that I am still crafting. Now, it's time to consider that you, like me, may still have some things to learn about living well, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS >> https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== BUY YOUR COPY OF "BE YOU... You’re listening to Find the Good News, Episode 109, “The Law of Change,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Margaret Meloni, Ph.D., host of the Death Dhamma podcast and author of "Carpooling With Death: How Living With Death Will Make You Stronger, Wiser, and Fearless" - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - There is a small note tacked to a piece of corkboard near my desk, the letters stark white against an inky black square. These words, "CHANGE IS THE LAW," have stared back at me from this small slip of paper for almost 20 years, serving as a reminder of the Buddha's teaching on impermanence, reminding me that everything that comes together eventually falls apart. At first blush, this may seem like a dismal outlook, encouraging nihilism, and a glass-half-empty perspective that could be quite depressing. While I understand this, that has not been my personal experience with teachings on impermanence, change, nor death. The truth is that in accepting this trinity of decay as a natural, ever-present part of life, I have found a luminous jewel in life that tends to shine brighter when juxtaposed with death's looming presence. In many ways, death is a door to life unfolded, be it minutes or years. At the very least, death is a tool that can be used to appreciate every precious, life-giving drop in a half-full-glass of water. This is the door in which my guest, Margaret Meloni, operates. Margaret is the host of the Death Dhamma podcast, a unique series of conversations about death from a Buddhist perspective, and the author of "Carpooling With Death: How Living With Death Will Make You Stronger, Wiser, and Fearless." Having lost many of her dearest, treasured loved ones, Margaret is no stranger to death. Through her book and her podcast, she has created a unique space and resource of practical wisdom, perspective, and comfort for those who may be navigating the difficult terrain of grief and loss. Margaret doesn't make promises, or outline some mystical formula to follow that will remove death's painful sting, and I think that is what I found most appealing. Instead, what I found was an honest approach to looking at the sting itself, understanding that death's painful shock is normal, but ultimately it too is in the throes of the great law of impermanence, fleeting just as it arrives. Her personal Buddhist practice provides obvious, tactile teachings that have been a great vehicle through her own experiences with life, death, and grief. She has the lovely ability to share those lessons in textured, nuanced ways, making them more approachable to those in the throes of misfortune. It is my hope that you will find our conversation useful in your own life, but more, if you have experienced the loss of a loved one, I would encourage you to seek out her podcast and her book. Now, it's time to look directly at the visage of death, to know its imprint on the world of time, to accept change as a natural—even fruitful—part of life, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS >> https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== BUY YOUR COPY OF "CARPOOLING WITH DEATH" >> www.FindTheGood.News/BookShop ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com ==========
Find the Good News, Episode 108, “The Prisoners” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Venerable De Hong, Co-Founder of the Engaged Buddhist Alliance - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - My father was a United States Marine that served as a combat engineer in the Vietnam war. On January 21, 1968, he was on the Marine base at Khe Sahn getting a short reprieve from the horrors of war. It was the Lunar New Year and the beginning of the Tet holiday. A cease-fire was about to begin, or at least that's what he thought. Instead, it was the beginning of a massive attack on United States forces by the communist forces of North Vietnam. He spoke of it often and as a young boy, I could barely enlarge my imagination enough to encompass what he shared. The siege finally ended in July the same year. The miseries of the Vietnam war would leave a lasting impact on my daddy, the United States, and citizens of Vietnam who were soon to live under the iron boot of a North Vietnamese communist regime. My guest and I did not speak about this during our visit. Instead, what I heard was his account of being a 5-year-old boy living in the shadow of the Vietnam war. During the holiday of Tet, while my father was fighting in a foxhole at Khe Sanh, my guest—only 5 years old—was being rushed from his bed in the middle of the night by his mother and father, pillow in hand, the evening sky illuminated by thunderous munitions, the sharp cracks of gunfire, and the circadian hum of helicopters flying overhead. These sounds would leave trauma in the minds of both him and my father, and it would lead them both down completely different paths. In this episode, I am honored to share my conversation with Venerable De Hong, the co-founder of the Engaged Buddhist Alliance, a Buddhist organization that works with individuals in the California prison system, helping them to cultivate mindfulness and meditation practices. De Hong's journey from Vietnam to California is difficult to fathom as I was born with some degree of privilege. At the age of 18, escaping communist Vietnam with his younger brother, De Hong became a refugee. At the mercy of strangers, he navigated the difficulties of immigrating to the United States. With no working knowledge of English and only $10 to his name, he eventually graduated college, became a U.S. citizen, and acclimated to American life, and it is there that it seems his Dharma path began. Like many of us in the United States, he became overworked and overwhelmed, eventually finding refuge in Buddhism, the religion of this homeland, taking the ordination vows and training of a Buddhist monk. Informed by the teachings of the Buddha, Venerable De Hong was drawn to enter the prison systems and serve those that society has deemed irredeemable. His tools are direct and simple but have had a profound impact on the lives of those he serves. De Hong feels strongly that the Dharma—the teachings of the Buddha—is a bell of mindfulness that reminds us to look directly into the suffering of the world and offer a way out of the suffering, to apply the great medicine of compassion. With letters, books, meditation training, and the gift of presence, De Hong and the Engaged Buddhist Alliance helps turn the wheel away from unspeakable trauma, helping prisoners find their original good nature, and allowing them to begin the process of touching the world with more loving hands, hearts, and minds. One day at a time, one being at a time, the Venerable De Hong transmutes and transforms the old migratory trauma of war-torn landscapes into pure lands of joy. Connected across space and time by war and religion, I am happy to call him my friend, and my true brother. Now, it's time to learn how trauma passes through cultures, across borders, into bloodlines, over oceans, and takes root in prisons, understanding that no matter what pain we've experienced, there is always hope for change, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS >> https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== LEARN MORE ABOUT THE ENGAGED BUDDHIST ALLIANCE >> https://engagedbuddhistalliance.org/ ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com ==========
Find the Good News, Episode 107, “The Hinge Moment,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Reverend Shannon Fleck, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Conference of Churches - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Take a good look around you, at the people in your community, the leaders, the ministers, the people in positions of authority or power, and pay attention to what you see? Do they look like you, think like you, and generally believe the same things you believe? On reflection, and if I'm being really honest about it, that's what I've experienced most of my life. For the most part, I could easily fit in anywhere, especially if I kept my mouth shut and my thoughts to myself. As long as I behaved and didn't push the boundaries of the status quo then the unseen hand was generally welcoming. When we're not personally running into boundaries it's easy to think that everything is alright in the world for everyone, especially when our focus is dialed in on our own needs. What about everyone else outside that narrow tunnel, the people in our communities that don't see themselves represented in the positions of power or authority, those who can't easily slide on the rails of the system by simply playing along? For whatever the reason— religion, race, financial status, sexuality—we have human brothers and sisters that aren't invited to the table of privilege. Further, many in privileged positions have been curating the systems to keep it that way by perpetuating outdated secular norms. This is the precise territory that Reverend Shannon Fleck operates, and it's why I asked her to visit with me on Find the Good News. Reverend Fleck is the Executive Director of the Oklahoma Conference of Churches, a coalition of faith communities, Christian denominations, interfaith organizations, and secular nonprofits that work to connect society to faith-based communities. This mission and this conversation are personal for Shannon. She holds, as do I, that people are informed by what they see, and when they do not see themselves properly represented they are actually being held back from the fullness of humanity, effectively stunting their growth into their full potential, neutering communities from the enrichment that diversity and variety brings. Reverend Fleck is a Christian faith leader that is publicly addressing the very real and present issues that many Churches are not addressing. While she isn't a fan of the particularly partisan marriage of religion-and-politics, she does lean her Christian faith directly into restorative justice, as well as the avoidance of umbrella terms that simply placate and maintain old social norms. Shannon wraps her arms around a grace that is inviting, a grace of inclusion, and refuses to sacrifice people against the threshing stone of theology. Reverend Shannon Fleck and the coalition she represents are very concerned with how to represent people, ensuring that they can see themselves sitting at the table. Now, it's time to check our privilege, get informed, consider some personal actions and changes, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS >> https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== LEARN MORE ABOUT REV. Ep. 106 - The Escape Pod - Ft. James Hiatt, Interim Worship Leader at University Methodist Church in Lake Charles, Louisiana ========== It wasn't hard to come up with a proper reflection for my conversation with James Hiatt. James and I met online in overlapping territory, and it was clear from the very beginning that I'd discovered a spiritual brother. While our personal stories are very different, we have somehow found our way to a common road wide enough to share, and there's plenty of space for others. What was clear from the jump is that James has opened his heart to wisdom, over and again, and in doing so he has expanded the boundaries of what we assume to know. This conversation has fibers of rebellion and doubt, bound up with the nutriments of healing and hope. More than anything, James and I talk about Jesus, which acted as a much-needed inhalation of clean, fresh, rejuvenating spirit. James comes from a place of recovery that has been infused with a mystical perspective and understanding that fuels his passion for inclusivity. The truth is that it is a very rare and healing pleasure to speak so openly and freely with someone about Jesus, God, and the Christ. James showed me a face of Christ that I am so fondly attracted to, and that is the face of Christ that I see planted firmly in the world, out in the wild, with us, not separate from us. He reminds me of the high value of being with the people of the world—in the world—as they are, instead of preparing some grand escape from the worries and woes. It leavens my heart to be able to share this intimate visit with you. You’re listening to Find the Good News, Episode 105, “The Dark Heart,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Lisa Diane McCall, life coach and author of The Rhythm of the Soul: A Journey of Loss and Discovery - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Have you ever made a decision, with no hesitation, that you knew would change your life? A choice that was so clear, so pure, that you could almost perceive the path it would lead you down? That's precisely the type of decision Lisa Diane McCall made when she decided to go on a vision quest in the Sahara Desert under the ancient and experienced guidance of the Tuareg nomads. Lisa has shared much of the magic and life-changing mysticism she experienced in the Sahara through her book, "The Rhythm of the Soul: A Journey of Loss and Discovery," an enchanting work of vibrant fiction—existing in a unique category she has called "Magical Realism"—which is informed by Lisa's very real and transformative Saharan quests. Lisa has tooled her personal longings and nomadic travels into good works for others, drawing on her diverse background and training in biology, anthropology, international health, vision questing, and shamanism. I felt a quickening in my visit with Lisa, a siblinghood that I seek and deeply long to experience more often. Worlds apart, I understood how in sharing this conversational space together we might invite others to seek out and experience a quest of their own. We spoke of wonderful, elevated, transformational things, and I feel I am better for having been invited into Lisa McCall's circle. Now, it's time to heed the call to visit far away, ancient lands. Ep. 104—The Healthy Triggers—A Beacon Series conversation featuring Laura Zam, Sexuality Educator, Certified Trauma Professional, and author of The Pleasure Plan: One Woman's Search for Sexual Healing ========== When I read Laura Zam's book, "The Pleasure Plan," I could clearly see how her work with trauma and its effects on human sexuality would be of great value to me personally. In her book, Laura opens up about her own traumatic experiences, sharing very candid details that created serious intimacy issues, not only with her partners but with herself. If you listen to this show often, you know that I advocate exploring our inner workings, going precisely to the pain to apply healing light. Laura, it seems, approves the same course of action. By taking this path herself, she has turned what she discovered into a source of wellness, pleasure, and sexual healing for others. I was surprised to learn that "The Pleasure Plan" was her first book in our conversation. She has a natural storytelling ability, a gift of drawing the reader into each situation, painting fine lines and fleshing out details, adding volume to the spaces and circumstances she shares. Laura cuts right through the noise by saying what needs to be said, even if the subjects seem taboo, and her comfort in sharing discomfort put me at ease. In this episode, I opened up and talked about things I've never spoken of before. I believe that is because Laura created a space of listening, love, and genuine care. She understands that for people to speak freely about traumatic experiences—particularly sexual trauma—they need to know they are safe and witnessed with eyes of non-judgment. Human beings are sexual creatures, and sex should be a source of joy and pleasure, not a fearful reminder of sorrow, shame, or pain. Thankfully, there are people in this world like Laura Zam that understand this, and more, they put themselves on personal missions to help others. Ep. 103 - The Phoenix and the Dragon - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Christine Arylo, author of "Overwhelmed & Over It: Embrace Your Power to Stay Centered & Sustained in a Chaotic World" by New World Library ========== Welcome to the first episode of 2021. I'm not sure that I could have handpicked a much more relevant guest to kick off the new year than author, feminine leadership advisor, and feminine leadership advisor Christine Arylo. Christine agreed to visit with me on Find the Good News to discuss her new book, "Overwhelmed & Over It: Embrace Your Power to Stay Centered & Sustained in a Chaotic World." The new book is directly pointed at women who are facing the merry-go-round of pressures that often lead to system burnout. What I found in reading this new work, and in my dynamic visit with Christine, was that the stresses of keeping all the floats balanced out, especially in the wildly chaotic times we've seen throughout 2020, has an equally corrosive effect on men as well. Christine helped me realize some old, self-sacrificing habits I've fallen into and perpetuated throughout my adult life. By labeling these habits as "compassion," I have basically been giving myself permission to self destruct. Christine's mission is to help beings develop healthier decisions and actions that can lead through the sticky chaos patterns that dominate us. I believe that applying even a portion of what Christine shares can help bring a richer, fuller life into fruition. Ep. 102 - The Tumbleweed Tree - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. John Wackman & Elizabeth Knight, co-authors of "Repair Revolution: How Fixers Are Transforming Our Throwaway Culture" by New World Library ========== Sometimes an episode release date aligns perfectly with a special occasion that makes the content of the conversation even more relevant. As it turns out, my conversation with John Wackman and Elizabeth Knight, co-authors of the new book Repair Revolution: How Fixers Are Transforming Our Throwaway Culture, would be one of those episodes. Each year, as we approach the Christmas-New Year season, my mind lingers on the incessant pulling-and-hauling that is about to begin, the vacillation between the acquisition of shiny new items, and the inevitable shucking of used goods, many that were perhaps obtained only a year before. I've struggled through these seasons for a long time, and anyone that has been willing to lend me an ear during this season has probably had to suffer through one of my diatribes about re-sanctifying this time of year, redirecting our energies on peace, mercy, and goodwill toward others, instead of another perpetual round of trinkets and gadgets that will bloat the landfills of tomorrow. My personal practice is something I call "secondhand sacred," which, in short, means finding spirit, fresh meaning, and new uses for forgotten, discarded, and broken things. I was happy to find many alignments to this practice in Repair Revolution, and even more during my visit with John and Elizabeth. The crucial element of this revolution comes in the form of "repair cafés," which are essentially gatherings of generous fixers and tinkers with a variety of expert skills at fixing our stuff. As John and Elizabeth explain, people line up at these repair cafés with their band-aided and broken items. Whether it's a shirt that needs mending, a blender that won't blend, a record player that won't play, or a lamp that won't light, it seems there is no end to the knowledge and willingness of fixers to teach people how to bring their cracked and crooked items back to life. Not only do people get their items repaired, but they learn firsthand how to make these fixes themselves. It really is revolutionary, yet so simple, this idea that someone can be taught how to make a simple repair, seek out the parts and extend the life of their utilized and treasured belongings. Beyond the transfer of know-how, John, Elizabeth, and all the fixers and tinkers get to hear the stories attached to so many of the precious items that come through the doors of the repair cafés. There are many items in my life that have moved from a simple utility, transformed into the stuff of legend through the life that wielded it. Maybe you have items like this; a sewing machine, a rocker, a hammer, a skillet, or pot. It is certainly easy to click through and have a new item delivered to you, but just because we can doesn't mean that we should. There is a cumulative impact on our environment when we live this way, and I would go further still and say that it also has an impact on our souls. Maybe, the repair revolution isn't just about fixing our broken belongings. Maybe, it's also about repairing ourselves and the fractured relationship we have with our belongings and world. Now, it's time to rethink old habits, take a pause before tossing something out, consider the interconnected nature of the world, and our place in it. Ep. 101 - The Firefly Entanglement - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Kim Chestney, author of "Radical Intuition: A Revolutionary Guide to Using Your Inner Power" by New World Library ========== Have you ever had a feeling, a hunch, or an inner knowing that seemed to guide you through a series of right actions? Maybe it was a feeling about a space, a place, a person, or a particular circumstance. If you followed the promptings of that feeling, did you find the end result to be better than what you'd originally assumed? Kim Chestney, my guest on Find the Good News and author of the new book, "Radical Intuition: A Revolutionary Guide to Using Your Inner Power," has made accessing and utilizing this inner knowing her life's work. I sincerely love the matter-of-fact way Kim approaches the topic of personal intuition, bringing it outside the sphere of "woo", and down to a practical, approachable level. She teaches us how to put intuition to work in our ordinary lives which, ironically, reveals the extraordinary connection that we have with the people, experiences, and world around us. We live in wild times, filled with a lot of uncertainty, but Kim encourages us to lean on our inner-knowing, an underutilized natural sense that helps us perfectly steer the ships of our lives as we navigate potentially choppy waters. With so much angst, anxiety, and discord around us, it is easy to feel like a victim. Kim Chestney reveals that we have more help built into us than we realize, and the uncanny thing is that it's been there all along. I sincerely enjoyed my visit with Kim, and my intuition tells me you'll leave this talk with new insights, just as I did. Find the Good News has been a positive experience for me, and a project that has allowed me to use my communication, design, and production skills paired with my deep desire to reflect on the human condition, that is to mean the great questions of why we are here, who we are, what is goodness, and what inspires some to right action. Find the Good News has been an evolving project, and in episode 54 I decided to change the edit a bit by pulling a short clip from the guest, placing it at the beginning of the episode, giving listeners a teaser that frames the tone of the episode. Recently, Find the Good News reached the milestone of 100 numbered episodes. I thought it might be fun to take all of the teasers from the beginning of each episode, 54 through 100, and place them into one listening experience. While it's not a conversation, it is a quick glimpse into the overall expanse, depth, and variety of conversations this format has created for my guests and me. If you've thought about listening to Find the Good News, but have never pressed play, I'd encourage you to do so on this bonus feature I've titled "The Teasers." Each episode's title and title card should appear on the screen, so if you're listening and feel you'd like to listen to that episode, just pause and visit www.FindTheGood.News. There, you'll find all recent episodes, the full line up, and my Beacon Series collection. Thank you for taking this Good News journey with me. -Brother Oran Parker
Ep. 100 - The Power of Three - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Michael J. Gelb, author of "Mastering the Art of Public Speaking: 8 Secrets to Transform Fear and Supercharge Your Career" by New World Library ========== We made it, my friends and listeners. Welcome to the 100th numbered episode of my Find the Good News podcast. When I think deeply on the line-up of good people doing good works that I’ve visited with over the past two years, I understand how each of them has been like a teacher. They’ve allowed me to discover and learn without judgment, and they’ve opened up their tender hearts to me without fear of new wounds. I’ve spoken to neighbors and friends putting their good news into action right here in the Louisiana gulf coast communities we call home, and I’ve expanded the Good News signal to bring you visits with unique thinkers and doers that are doing good works throughout the world. In the very beginning, I recall a thought that if I could just produce three quality conversations, get them out into the ether, then others would come, and together we could put something good out into the world. Oddly enough, my guest in this special 100th episode, Michael J. Gelb, propagates a similar philosophy in his good work as a speaker, motivator, writer, and teacher. As listeners of Find the Good News may know, I suffered from social anxiety for many, many years. This anxiety kept me away from many joyful and beneficial activities in my life. The ability to sit with this microphone and share with you openly and honestly is the result of decades of hard work. In Michael’s latest book, "Mastering the Art of Public Speaking: 8 Secrets to Transform Fear and Supercharge Your Career,” he cuts right into the heart of fear itself, offering advice, perspectives, and practical thought exercises to help transmute the energies of fear and anxiety. The reality is that life is relationship, and with relationship comes communication. Good communication, free from fear and anxiety, crafted to serve the common good of all beings, is a good work. I believe that serving the common good is the tie that binds across the expanse of Michael Gelb’s body of work. Just looking at the titles of his books you’ll find words like creativity, connection, healing, innovation, thinking, mastering, power, learning, discovery, and genius. When a being chooses to point all of these faculties at the well being of others, goodness blooms. I am thankful to Michael Gelb for being a part of this milestone episode. I am grateful to New World Library for connecting me with Michael, and so many other wonderful authors. I am humbled that so many have taken the time to share the right-round-table with me, whether in person or virtually. The world is always changing. I don’t know what the next 100 conversations will bring, but I’m ready to listen. Whatever I hear, I’m going to continue to learn, and I’ll continue to put forth my best effort to use each of these visits to grow a good heart. Ep. 99 - The Mother's Refuge - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Paria Hassouri, MD, author of "Found in Transition: A Mothers' Evolution During Her Child's Gender Change " by New World Library ========== It fascinates me how easy it can be to congratulate myself on being open-minded, all-inclusive, and accepting of others. My self-praise doesn’t end there, as I’m always ready, it seems, to easily forgive myself for the secret judgments and grudges that I don’t speak out loud for the world to hear. It’s not very difficult to envision oneself as some type of enlightened being with an expansive and compassionate heart when we’re never presented with information or circumstances that threaten the levees that protect us from all the varieties of human existence that color our world. This may seem like a strange way to lead you into my conversation with Paria Hassouri, MD, author of Found in Transition: A Mother’s Evolution During Her Child’s Gender Change, but after reading her book and visiting with her, I quickly learned that for all the heart-and-mind work that I claim to do, I still have old mazes to navigate, filled with lingering fears. Paria’s work is an honest one, a memoir free from the veneer of personal perfection that we’ve grown accustomed to, a type of tailored-for-consumption presentation that I myself am guilty of. I was watching my mind as I read this work of hers, looking to see what thoughts would arise, almost as if I already knew on some level that I would feel the sting of my own boundaries to accept others for who there are. The truth was that I was afraid to meet the limits of my understanding. What I discovered, in Paria’s book and in our conversation, was that the way to expand my love was to meet those limits and not turn away. The journey of shock, pain, confusion, acceptance, renewal, and love that Paria and her daughter go through is enlightening. It has not only given me a more nuanced understanding of my expanded human family, but it also provided me the opportunity to feel textures and wounds inside me that I’d never touched before. When we are given the chance to see old wounds, we can lay hands on them to heal. I am thankful for Paria’s courage and willingness to share her book and time with me. Now, it’s time to lay old fears aside, seek out our tender hearts, make room for all the varied children of the earth, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS >> https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== MEET PARIA HASSOURI, MD >> https://www.pariahassouri.com/ BUY YOUR COPY OF "FOUND IN TRANSITION" >> https://bookshop.org/books/found-in-transition-a-mother-s-evolution-during-her-child-s-gender-change/9781608687084 EXPLORE NEW WORD LIBRARY >> https://www.newworldlibrary.com/Books.aspx ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com ========== SUPPORT CARE-HELP OF SULPHUR >> http://care-help.org/ •••••••••••••
Ep. 98 - The Character Lines - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Bridgit Dengel Gaspard, author of "The Final 8th: Enlist Your Inner Selves to Accomplish Your Goals" by New World Library ========== If you’ve been listening to Find the Good News for any length of time then you’ve probably picked up on my personal interest in exploring the landscape of the human mind and heart. As Find the Good News makes its way toward 100 episodes, it’s clear to me that the good work this show might be doing—through the vehicle of intimate listening and sharing—could be leading others to ask that most-profound question that I’ve been asking most of my life; who am I, really? In this episode, I visit with Bridgit Dengel Gaspard, author of the new book, “The Final 8th: Enlist Your Inner Selves to Accomplish Your Goals.” Bridgit helps her clients discover and engage their inner world through the voice dialogue method, which I am finding to be an indispensable holistic tool. What I discovered in reading Bridgit’s new book is that there were very clear and strong voices, characters, or aspects of myself that I’d never really acknowledged. Many of these characters embody some of my best and worst characteristics, adopting them as their full identity. Some are a great source of strength, and many clearly developed out of personal pain, fear, and guilt. While they may have served me well during times of hardship or strife, their loud voices have steered me away from many joys. In this visit with Bridgit, she encourages me, and you, to open an active dialogue with these manifold inner beings, hearing what they have to say by lending our own voice so they can express their fears and hopes. Bridgit eagerly and openly allowed me to share and lovingly provided practices to help me further along in my own holistic journey of self-healing and discovery. Her book really is a treasure, and I plan to put what she shares into practice. My conversation with her has lingered in my mind for many days. I think I’m starting to see and understand the origins of these many Orans that are perhaps looking to be healed, or lend a helping hand when this particular Oran needs it because, in truth, they are me. Now, it’s time to take a look inside yourself and ask the great question, “who am I, really," then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS >> https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== MEET BRIDGiT DENGEL GASPARD >> http://www.bridgit-dengel-gaspard.com/ BUY YOUR COPY OF "THE FINAL 8TH" >> https://bookshop.org/books/the-final-8th-enlist-your-inner-selves-to-accomplish-your-goals/9781608686919 EXPLORE NEW WORD LIBRARY >> https://www.newworldlibrary.com/Books.aspx ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com ========== SUPPORT CARE-HELP OF SULPHUR >> http://care-help.org/ •••••••••••••
Ep. 97 - The Step Towards Joy - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Kathy Callahan, author of "101 Rescue Puppies: One Family's Story of Fostering Dogs, Love, and Trust" by New World Library==========I have to be honest; lately, I’ve been feeling a little burned out, and why wouldn’t I? Like you, I’ve been on this train without breaks that has 2020 painted on the side, and I suppose all the bumps and rickety tracks have rattled my brain and frayed my nerves. We’re all doing the best we can do with the hand we’ve been dealt. I can testify that a human mind, my human mind, needs a reprieve from the battering inflicted by news cycles choked with fires, storms, politics, and pandemics. Recently, my break came at me sideways in the form of the lovely little book, “101 Rescue Puppies: One Family’s Story of Fostering Dogs, Love, and Trust” by Kathy Callahan. What I was expecting was a quick read about the world of animal rescue work and fostering, but what I got was a shot of joy right to the heart, a serum for the gloomy settling mood I could feel draping all over me. In this conversation with Kathy, I discover that her road to animal fostering didn’t come from some lifelong adoration of animals, but rather it developed over time, growing into other parts of her life and the lives of those she encountered through her good work. Her much-needed message, which arrived in the form of perpetual puppy love, is that a human doesn’t have to wait for the perfect circumstances or training to arrive before they step toward joy. What Kathy believes and practices is that by making that first move forward, good will compound upon good, love grows from love, and happiness blossoms and spreads in ways that could not be conceived of at the beginning of the journey. Kathy Callahan reminded me of the priceless value of connection to the world of creatures beyond my own species, and her book proves that when people show compassion to other creatures their hearts expand, making more room for love, hope, and healing. Now, it’s time to get out of the 2020 grind, find your faith in the great human capacity to do the right things, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news.==========SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS >> https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ==========MEET KATHY CALLAHAN >> https://www.puppypicks.com/ BUY YOUR COPY OF "101 RESCUE PUPPIES" >> https://bookshop.org/books/101-rescue-puppies-one-family-s-story-of-fostering-dogs-love-and-trust/9781608686568 EXPLORE NEW WORD LIBRARY >> https://www.newworldlibrary.com/Books.aspx ==========FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com ==========SUPPORT CARE-HELP OF SULPHUR >> http://care-help.org/ •••••••••••••
Ep. 96 - The Ph.D. in the Glitch - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Hersch Wilson, author of "Firefighter Zen: A Field Guide To Thriving In Tough Times" by New World Library ========== So often, the guests I’ve spoken with on Find the Good News have been relevant to what was going on in my life, or in the world at the time. This hasn’t been intentional, or by design, necessarily; I talk to the guests in turn, accepting whatever good people come into my life through the Good News signal. It’s a fascinating thing, really, to speak deeply with a guest and adopt, or understand, their worldview for the duration of these talks. I take the things we discuss seriously, and I’m always looking for something applicable and relevant that I can put to work in my very ordinary life. When I visited with Hersch Wilson, author of the new book “Firefighter Zen: A Field Guide To Thriving In Tough Times,” I had no idea that only a week after our conversation I would be asked to put everything in our talk, and his book, to the test. You see, Hersch’s book is all about finding meaning, resilience, hope, and your personal metal during the difficult days that are sure to come, moments when everything you’ve trusted in crumbles before your eyes. Hersch, who has been a firefighter since 1986, calls these moments of discord and disruption “the glitch." On August 27th, only 9 days after our conversation, Hurricane Laura barreled through Southwest Louisiana, and I—along with all the citizens of our region—got to experience the glitch first hand. Everything that I had read in Hersch’s book, and had taken away from our conversation, immediately came into play. One day you’re planning your next podcast episode, tightening the screws on your existing comforts, thinking about how to navigate the existing glitches caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the approaching civil boiling point, made worse by divisive, power-mad politicians in an election year, and the next you’re quickly making evacuation preparations, shoring up resources, leaving stability behind, eventually returning to a powerless region with no potable water, filled with shattered businesses, crippled infrastructures, desperate citizens, and obliterated homes. This was the glitch, and I, along with many others, was in it. I thought of my conversation with Hersch often over then past weeks of stabilization and recovery. Hersch Wilson has found a way to navigate the glitch with practical wisdom and grace. In this conversation, and in his book, Hersch does not skirt around difficult subjects and chooses instead to deal with life as it really is. He takes all the unsavory parts life brings as a whole, feeling its sometimes coarse, bumpy skin, then in the midst of it all, he offers perspective to help us do more than just survive; he shows us how to thrive. I didn’t know just how grateful I would be to have read Hersch’s book in advance of the storm. Having the opportunity to visit with him ahead of this natural disaster ended up being a great gift. It was a blessing in the glitch, and I hope that our visit, and his book, will be the same for you. Now, it’s time to look at things just as they are without the preconceived notions of this-and-that, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS >> https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== MEET HERSCH WILSON >> http://www.herschwilson.com/ BUY YOUR COPY OF "FIREFIGHTER ZEN" >> https://bookshop.org/books/firefighter-zen-a-field-guide-to-thriving-in-tough-times/9781608686889 ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com ========== SUPPORT CARE-HELP OF SULPHUR >> http://care-help.org/ •••••••••••••
Ep. 95 - The Jewel in the Ashes - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Robin Easton, author of "Naked In Eden: My Adventure and Awakening in the Australian Rainforest." ========== Finding the right words to introduce my guest for this episode isn’t difficult. In fact, as I sat and meditated on our conversation, waiting for sweet, descriptive honey to drip from my mind to my lips, the most simple words I’ve ever used to frame any guest of Find the Good News came to mind. Robin Easton, my dear human sister that you are about to meet, is the human embodiment of a radiant, glowing, sacred heart. Every single conversation I’ve had on Find the Good News has blessed me in some way. I’ve gained new perspectives, found clarity in my existing paradigms, and watched as clunky ideas and forms of reasoning were turned to ash, fertile soil for fresh spiritual fruits. In this very intimate conversation with Robin Easton, author of “Naked in Eden: My Adventure and Awakening in the Australian Rainforest,” I listened anew as we traveled each of these cycles for several revolutions. Through this show I have made many new and diverse relationships all across the world, meeting people living lives of goodness that I’d never dreamed of connecting with. In traversing these intermingled online circles I met Robin, and it was clear from the jump that she was a generous communicator with a willingness to pour out love and prose like a living fountain. Nature seemed to create a common bond between us, and it was through this thread that I learned about her book, “Naked in Eden,” a very personal memoir of her spiritual awakening in the Australian rainforest. I purchased the book and was mesmerized by the rich detail and palpable way she shared the entire experience. This book, and Robin’s special gift of revealing her naked spiritual heart, drew me in alongside her as she experiences an integration with the natural world that so few of us shackled to our cities could ever experience. When Robin agreed to visit with me on Find the Good News, I was thrilled. Once technology made it possible for us to connect, her good heart shimmered like a multi-faceted jewel. I believe Robin is walking the path of the Bodhisattva, a giver, a true lamp for those desiring light. It is my great hope that you will feel what I felt in speaking with her, that you will hear the elemental outpouring of love in her voice, a love that comes from a human heart that is ready to embrace the entire world. Ep. 94 - The Guardian - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Diana Carroll, author of "Love Skills: The Keys to Unlocking Lasting, Wholehearted Love," published by New World Library ========== I think it would be fair to say that generally, life is a relationship. We’re in some type of relationship from the day that we are conceived. Our first relationship is to our mother, then those that raise us, extended family, perhaps our classmates, teachers, and friends. Depending on our growing awareness, perhaps we are able to perceive the textured nuances of each of these connections, and further still, how the synergy is affected through our circumstantial relationship to culture, community, and environment. For many, there comes a point where a devoted, intentional bond is made with another human being, and the factors that draw them together are manifold. I would call this a bond of love, a sacred partnership. If nurtured, it can grow far beyond the early entanglements that caused the initial attraction. This sounds wonderful, and it can be, yet many relationships still fail, and we’re left wondering what we could have done differently, and how we can use more skillful means with others. Linda Carroll, the author of “Love Skills: The Keys to Unlocking Lasting, Wholehearted Love," presents a resource to do just that. Linda’s book was a walk down memory lane for me, stopping to examine where I’ve been, the choices I’ve made, the “why” behind the things I’ve done when in relationship. It helped put fresh eyes on present relationships, and how past patterns and experiences could be affecting intimacy—for better or for worse—revealing specific actions I can take to better the quality of my relationships. My conversation with Linda was pleasant and personal, and she is clearly an observant, thoughtful listener with deep insights on human companionship and love. There is no doubt in my mind that she genuinely wants people to have much healthier and deeper relationships. Considering the complexities caused by extreme distancing, close proximity, or isolation many may feel during the times we live in, perhaps there is no better time for a book like “Love Skills” to come along. Ep. 93 - The Truth Of Our Biases - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Professor Simran Jeet Singh—educator, writer, activist, and scholar. ========== Sometimes I feel that I may have made a mistake when I named this podcast. Having a show called “Find the Good News” sets the precedent that my guests and I must only talk about positive things. While my end goal is to always lean our conversations toward goodness and good works, I realize fully that we can’t get there by ignoring the obvious troubles we are facing right now in the world. Intentionally staring deeply into dark chasms filled with brokenness, suffering, despair, and injustice has been a part of my personal journey of awakening and healing since the very beginning, and if you’re a regular listener then you know I walk that path with the guests of this show. The most important part of that companionship is that we walk into those troubled places together, in support of one another, with an intention to learn from what we see and to bring information out that can be put to good work immediately. My companion into the blight for this episode of “Find the Good News” is educator, writer, activist, and scholar Professor Simran Jeet Singh. Simran is regularly on the frontline of many conversations regarding issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity. As an American citizen, and a devoted Sikh, Simran had to deal with many of these societal biases throughout his childhood, only to have those biases strengthened after the September 11th attacks in 2001. During our visit, he offered unique, firsthand perspectives that are honest about the truth of our biases. In a country whose fabric is literally crafted from a manifold array of cultures, colors, and fibers, there is still a very strong tendency for those at the loom to bleach away the beautiful patterns that could emerge. The white-washing of history in an attempt to remove the stains and pains of the past is a very present reality. As Simran and I discuss, it is absolutely critical that we acknowledge where we’ve been so we can heal the old multigenerational wounds inflicted by racism, bigotry, and an unwillingness to fully appreciate all the textures of humanity. He allowed me to speak with him openly, without judgment. He offered a brother’s ear, and heartfelt kindness. The cyclical rhythms of injustice and ignorance have resulted in a swelling tidal rage that has crested the levies of apathy. Change is the law, and the flood of outrage that has emerged is a natural result of too much pain and discrimination for far too long. That is why I believe that conversations like the one I had with Simran Jeet Singh must happen more often. They are happening now. As different as we each many seem on the surface, there is a human kinship and common dream of peace, equanimity, and well-being that can emerge if allies keep finding each other and working together. Visiting with Simran Jeet Singh filled me with an unbiased hope that it is possible. Ep. 92 - The Resonant Strings - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Meido Moore Roshi, abbot of Korinji, a Rinzai Zen monastery, and author of "The Rinzai Zen Way: A Guide to Practice" by Shambala Publications. ========== Zen. In the circles I’ve traveled it is a word that is often said and even more misunderstood. Truth? I am still trying to understand it myself. More truth? When I feel like I’ve built a nice and sturdy framework for it, the structure I’ve constructed topples to sticks and stones. I laugh about it. I cry about it. I let go. I start again. “This,” I think, “is Zen!" But is it? It’s this question that lies at the heart of my conversation with Meido Moore Roshi, abbot of Korinji, a Rinzai Zen monastery in Wisconsin, where he transmits Zen Buddhist teachings that can find roots as far back as 5th century India. Meido is an 86th-generation Zen dharma heir and a 48th-generation holder of the lineage descended from Rinzai Gigen. The Rinzai Zen way, as instructed by Meido Moore Roshi, places particular emphasis on making use of the body as part of the practice, as well as fine arts, and internal energetic work. It was clear to me that he has an elemental connection and appreciation for the natural world, sharing this with his students by incorporating earth, air, fire, and water into their training. While there is certainly an aesthetic to Zen that is quite peaceful and minimalist, Meido is clear that the Rinzai way is much more akin to boot camp than a day at the spa. In this conversation, Meido graciously helped clarify many of the concepts of Zen Buddhism, not least of all these three; What am I? What is this life for? Why is there suffering? Tucked in the green hills and farmlands of Madison, Wisconsin there is, at this very moment, an abbot and his students sincerely seeking the answers to these very questions. Wisdom and compassion are cultivated. The wheel of the dharma turns. Transmission occurs. I am reminded that it is good to have obtained this human existence. “This," I think, “is Zen." Ep. 91 - The Magic Feather - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Don Jose Ruiz, Toltec Shaman and author of "The Medicine Bag: Shamanic Rituals & Ceremonies for Personal Transformation" from Hierophant Publishing ========== There are events in our lives that charged with a specific energy. These moments can feel electric. Time perhaps feels bent. Sensations get prickly, and details seem enhanced. To the outside world these make look like nothing more than the ongoing and ordinary ebb-and-flow of occurrences, but for the soul connected to the happening these grooves in the timeline take on new meaning. For the experiencer, these moments are made holy, and there is high value in the ability to go back to them and experience the wisdom and lessons many times as the wheel of life turns on. When I was a boy I had an experience like this, and even as young as I was there was an awareness that I should create a remembrance of the experience, so I gathered a small item from nature and kept it close to me; I keep it close still. This became a practice throughout my life, and as the small totems of remembrance grew I started keeping them in a small and simple leather bag. For years it has moved with me along the timeline, mostly hanging in a visible space where I rest, that is until recently. Several months ago I discovered the book “The Medicine Bag: Shamanic Rituals & Ceremonies for Personal Transformation” by Toltec Shaman, and author of “The Fifth Agreement,” Don Jose Ruiz. Many mornings I would bring Jose’s book with me on my dawn walks at a nearby cemetery, a place that I go to connect with Spirit and to pray for the living souls whose remains lie there. Day-by-day Don Jose’s words clarified the value of the medicine bag but expanded its value far beyond the small leather pouch and the contents inside. Something old was shaking loose inside my heart, space where I’d been keeping this medicine bag somewhat secret and safe from the eyes of the world. Jose’s book was asking me to share it with the world in a new way that I had not before. Inspired, I reached out to Don Jose’s publisher, and he graciously agreed to share his time with me on “Find the Good News." This conversation was absolutely pivotal to me. Even still, I am riding along with the pleasant current of our visit. Jose radiated sweetness and kind energy that was palpable even across the great space between us. He listened to my experiences with love, and the words he offered in return carried the aroma of truth that I have come to appreciate from great teachers of wisdom. Don Jose Ruiz is connected to his ancient heritage, and like his father Don Miguel Ruiz, he continues to practice, expand, and share the Shamanic wisdom of their Toltec ancestors. In our visit, Jose shared highly personal family stories, connecting them directly to the details of our talk, humanizing and grounding each of them with clear and meaningful connections with strands running directly into his heart. In truth, this conversation was an invitation far beyond the pages of his new book “The Medicine Bag." In the midst of the conversation, Don Jose Ruiz invited me into the medicine bag that is his heart. In some small way, I feel as though I am there still. I encourage you to untie the tight leather cord that may be sealing your heart, your medicine bag, tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS ON PATREON >> www.Patreon.com/FindTheGoodNews ========== MEET DON JOSE RUIZ >> https://www.facebook.com/ToltecLife/ BUY "THE MEDICINE BAG" >> https://bookshop.org/books/the-medicine-bag-shamanic-rituals-ceremonies-for-personal-transformation/9781938289873 ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com ========== SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS ••••••••••••• SULPHUR TODAY >> www.facebook.com/sulphurtoday / #SulphurToday ••••••••••••• BRIMSTONE MUSEUM >> www.brimstonemuseum.org or Call (337) 527-0357 •••••••••••••
Ep. 90 - The In Zone - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Chris Niebauer, Ph.D., Author of "No Self, No Problem: How Neuropsychology is Catching Up to Buddhism" from Hierophant Publishing ========== I once read that the very toxic escalation of ego-driven “me” culture started its ascent with the invention of the mirror. Long before one could truly see their own reflection with clarity, the best way to gain a clear picture of the self was in a relationship with others. The mirror came along, the self became even more infatuated with the appearance of the self and thus began our evolutionary slide into the maddening nature of influencer culture and selfies. We see images of ourselves—digitally displayed and shared—more than any other time in human history. Inflated egos rule the signals, indoctrinating us into tribes and cults of personality, and somewhere in this maelstrom we cling to identities that are little more than piles of historical rubbish, random filaments of experience and memory are drawn together to form a conscious being that I call “me." I look over there, and I see another cluster that I call “you." What happens when we start sifting through the curated bits and pieces that make up these selves we’ve become so enamored with? Am I my brain, my body, my memories, my nerves, my breath? When I feel love in my heart, where is my heart exactly, and what do I even mean by that? When I am sad and I suffer, where is the suffering and who is it happening to? What about my love for you, or the compassion that is activated when you are in pain? Is this indicative of a connected and collective bond between you and I that dissolves the common concepts of individualism and identity that we are familiar with? I brought these questions and more to my conversation on Find the Good News when I visited with Chris Niebauer, Ph.D., author of “No Self, No Problem: How Neuropsychology is Catching Up to Buddhism.” In the early 90s, Chris noticed many similarities in psychology, neuroscience, and the teachings of Buddhism, Taoism, and many other Eastern spiritual traditions, and he has explored these intersections for over two decades. What Chris presents is a confirmation that the latest research in neuropsychology resonates with the Buddhist doctrine of “no self,” which refers to the solidified ego identity as a fabrication of the left side of the brain. This doesn’t mean you don’t exist, or that you are somehow not real, but rather that the ego that you’ve identified with is perhaps not the real you at all. What’s beautiful about Chris Niebauer's book, the exercises it contains, and this conversation is that they encourage us to go on an expedition into inner and uncharted zones that challenge who we think we are. “No Self, No Problem” brings us to a shared space outside of corrosive hyper-individualism, beyond the “otherhood” of the left brain, and into the right-brain experience of brotherhood. Ep. 89 - The Gathering Fire - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Diana Rowan, Author of "The Bright Way: Five Steps To Freeing The Creative Within" from New World Library ========== 15 years ago I was asked to speak to a group of graphic design students about creativity in the field of graphic communications. As I sat down to draft my presentation I asked myself, “What is creativity, and where does it come from?" This question led me down a track far outside the field of graphic design, on into the nature of reality itself, and I have come to believe that creativity is an actual spiritual force, not unlike love, and that when tested it can be seen manifesting in kaleidoscopic ways throughout creation. If I were going to speak to these students about creative design then I would have to speak to them HONESTLY about the nature of creativity and how design proves the existence of this ordered, balancing, and glorious force. Not only is this creative principle in us, but it is outside of us. When we recognize it, connect to it, and apply it, wonders emerge. That all sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? And one would think the realization alone would change your life. Happily ever after! Well, that’s not the case, at least not for me. Knowing isn’t doing, and I, like many, get stuck. Sometimes creative momentum takes a full-stop, and getting the creaking pipes flowing again can be a real challenge. This is precisely why, I believe, special beings like Diana Rowan—author of “The Bright Way: Five Steps To Freeing The Creative Within”—are born into this world. They’re here to help the rest of us get unstuck, to get the elements of our creativity harmonizing again. Part story and part call-to-action, her bright way could motivate even the most passive creative among us. Because her “bright way” method is elemental in nature, it is easy to adopt, apply, and understand because the metaphorical reminders exist all around us. As you’ll learn in her book, and in this conversation, Diana is no stranger to being stuck herself. Her “bright way” path draws together the teachings of wisdom traditions from around the world in a fresh and palatable way. I was not surprised to learn that Diana is an accomplished harpist. It compliments her kind and ethereal tones as she shares what she has learned. If you’ve ever poured sand on your own fire of inspiration, then heed the advice of Diana Rowan. Creativity is in you, particular to you, waiting on you to say “yes." Your creativity wants to be loosed on the world, and lead you along a brighter, lovely way. Ep. 88 - The Shimmering Truth - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Ellen Meredith, DA, EEMAP, Author of "The Language Your Body Speaks: Self-Healing with Energy Medicine" from New World Library ========== When is the last time you stopped and really listened to your body? What physical aches do you live with daily? How are compensating for them? Do you have chronic issues that seem to never go away? Maybe, like many, you just feel off, heavy, out of balance, or worn down. Perhaps, like many people all across the world, you treat each and every creak and groan with pharmaceutical solutions that carry a landslide of negative side effects in their tailwind. What if there were other ways to approach the creaks and groans in your body? In this episode, I visit with energy medicine practitioner Ellen Meredith, author of “The Language Your Body Speaks: Self-Healing with Energy Medicine.” Ellen has been practicing energy medicine for over 35 years, and during that time she has helped countless individuals harness the power of their body—their energy body—to bring balance, wellness, and health back to their lives. Her book is a wonderful mix of stories, examples, and exercises that help people get in touch with their source code, the original human language, the language of energy. Ellen took the time to walk me through one of her key practices, and she applied her guiding insights to a personal practice of my own, enhancing it in ways I had not considered. This conversation is a wonderful companion to Ellen’s new book and the good work she continues through her energy medicine practice. If like me, you have even the most rudimentary understanding of human energy, then this is a good place to start your path to healing and health in a very multi-dimensional way. Ep. 87 - The Slippage - Ft. Heather Regan White, Journalist with the Southwest Daily News ========== We live in strange times, made stranger and more disorienting by a steady stream of conflicting news and information signals from sunrise to sunset. Sifting through these competing signals and processing them to find relevant bits that add value to your life can be an exhausting grind with the potential to wear down a mind’s ability to discern truth from fiction. Many are able to recall a time before the excessive pings-and-dings, reminders, alerts, and the ever-present “breaking news” ticker tape. In truth, my sheer exhaustion with this perpetual flow played a large role in the creation of “Find the Good News” podcast. I suppose we all have my general sense of being fed up for that. Still, among the overlapping signals, there are those clear voices that curate and create content that is trustworthy. These are transmissions that I desperately crave, untainted and unbiased by politics, devoted to sharing plain information that can be made useful immediately without clawing through disorienting layers of spin and fog. In this episode of “Find the Good News” I get to share my conversation with one such voice that I have come to appreciate. Enter my conversation with Heather Regan White, a journalist in my hometown of Sulphur, Louisiana. Heather has been reporting, writing, and sharing for 25 years, and in that time she has become a clear and resonant sound of awareness in our community. As much as I appreciate her good work in our local paper, “The Southwest Daily News,” I have grown just as fond of her even and balanced presence on social media. In a community congested with competing “information station” groups and pages that have more in common with daytime talk-and-fight shows than they do with journalistic integrity, it is refreshing to know that a clear signal like Heather’s is readily available. In my mind, Heather is an ally in the mission to cut through the noisy world of spin, and it was an absolute pleasure for me to have this candid visit with her. Next time you get online or pick up a paper to see what’s going on in the world, you would be doing yourself a favor to look for a byline by Heather Regan White. You’ll be guaranteed to get the truth delivered by a dedicated journalist, and from time-to-time, there might be a well-balanced and educated opinion to go along with it. Now, it’s time to make space in your heart for the common good, clear a corner for some good old-fashioned, hometown truth, then press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS ON PATREON >> www.Patreon.com/FindTheGoodNews ========== MEET HEATHER REGAN WHITE >> www.facebook.com/heather.reganwhite ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com ========== SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS ••••••••••••• SULPHUR TODAY >> www.facebook.com/sulphurtoday / #SulphurToday ••••••••••••• BRIMSTONE MUSEUM >> www.brimstonemuseum.org or Call (337) 527-0357 •••••••••••••
Ep. 86 - The Divine Feminine - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Clark Strand & Perdita Finn, co-authors of The Way of the Rose: The Radical Path of the Divine Feminine Hidden in the Rosary ========== Almost from the very moment of my initial awakening in the summer of 1995, I’ve had a hunger to learn, and reading was a critical source of nutrients for my ravenous mind. I’ve read many wonderful books since that day, and while my mind may not be as hungry, it still makes a healthy meal of many wonderful written works. In the full scope of all the works I’ve read, there are those very special books that are more like profound life-events. I’m sure you understand my meaning. These are the books that place you in timeless spaces, moving beyond the realm of simple transference of information, or pleasurable stimulation. These are the works that become phenomena, and when you turn the last page your mind takes special note of the time and space in which you absorbed its message. Recently, I completed one such multifaceted work, so layered and rich that I reached out to the authors to see if they would visit with me on "Find the Good News." Enter my conversation Clark Strand & Perdita Finn, co-authors of the book “The Way of the Rose: The Radical Path of the Divine Feminine Hidden in the Rosary.” On the surface, this book appears to be about the Rosary—and it is about that—but I very quickly learned that it while it is about this cherished, predominantly Catholic form of prayer, this inspired work was about so much more. ”The Way of the Rose,” through the Rosary, reaches down through the historic ages of humankind, and further still into prehistory, sinking to the very formation of the earth, on deeper to the creation of the universe. In this dynamic and invigorating conversation, Clark & Perdita graciously share their intimate discoveries as they followed the promptings and messages of the Lady—or the Girl—around the world and through the ages to produce “The Way of the Rose,” a work which reveals cross-cultural connections of the Divine Feminine using poetic and prophetic beats, unlike any work I’ve encountered before. What intrigued me most of all about “The Way of the Rose,” and the story of an encounter that Clark shares, is the sideways nature in which their relationship began. As someone that has been using a Rosary as a part of my own prayer life, long before I made my cycle within the organized Catholic Church, it was refreshing to visit with people that have experienced such powerful promptings. An ongoing journey like that of Clark Strand & Perdita Finn longs to be shared, or in this instance, cries out across the ages to be born. I enjoyed this conversation with Clark Strand and Perdita Finn. They were so genuine, kind, and so open to sharing the sweet aroma of this unfolding work called “The Way of the Rose.” Before you listen to this episode, I encourage you to look for the string that’s running through your life or the common links in the chain of your existence that binds one thing to the next. Stop for a moment on the beads that have formed around every sacred moment you’ve experienced. Gently go through them one-by-one. Ep. 85 - The Growing Voice - Ft. Dominique Darbonne of The Flamethrowers ========== Since starting this Good News podcast signal, it’s been my great pleasure to meet people from my region that I may not have met otherwise. The truth is that this transmission has allowed me to do much more than simply meet them; I’ve gotten to know them in some very deep and personal ways. More often than not, when I finish one of these visits, I leave the conversation feeling like I’ve gained a new friend. Other times, it goes beyond friendship and expands into the category of an alliance. In talking with Dominique Darbonne, I gained a friend and an ally. My local listeners may know Dominique as the singer for the on-fire band “The Flamethrowers,” but like each of us, her story goes so much deeper than her vocal vibrations. I feel that I had this conversation with Dominique at a very peculiar time in her life. It was clear from our visit that there is a rising passion inside of her to use her voice beyond the local stage—even away from song—to bring attention to local injustices that affect her community, and champion for those the underdogs that are working tirelessly to make this region more civil and healthy. She reminds me, yet again, that it is important to use right speech and right action when you’re on your path to waking up. Beyond that, know who your allies are and bring them together to speak as one voice as often as you can. That, dear friends, is a community worth speaking out for. So, perk up, maybe steep some tea, and enjoy some green & open space in your hometown. Think about how the world is changing, how it’s changing you, and how you can put your reflections and your voice to work for those around you, then press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS ON PATREON >> www.Patreon.com/FindTheGoodNews ========== MEET DOMINIQUE DARBONNE >> www.facebook.com/dominiquelayne ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com ========== SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS ••••••••••••• SULPHUR TODAY >> www.facebook.com/sulphurtoday / #SulphurToday ••••••••••••• BRIMSTONE MUSEUM >> www.brimstonemuseum.org or Call (337) 527-0357 •••••••••••••
Ep. 84 - The Golden Vine - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Corin Grillo author of The Angel Experiment: A 21-Day Magical Adventure to Heal Your Life========== When you hear the word “Angel,” what comes to mind? If you’re like most of the people I’ve encountered, or if you’re like I was 25 years ago, then you probably draw up a pretty specific image. Maybe you think of chubby little cherubs with plump and rosy cheeks, sporting harps, and heart-shaped arrows. Perhaps you call to mind images of majestic humanoid beings with grand wings, glimmering armor, armed with glimmering shields and flaming swords. For me, the earliest image I can call to mind is from an antique painting that still hangs on the wall in the bedroom of my long-deceased Great Grandfather. Two children, a boy, and a girl are crossing a dilapidated bridge under the veil of night. Many of the planks are missing. Over them both is the image of a beautiful woman, draped in fine fabrics, her arms spread wide, her downy wings tucked firmly behind her as she projects and guides the children to safety. I’m sure you know the image I’m talking about; it’s a classic. Over two decades ago, all my preconceived notions about Angels came crumbling down, and I was given cause to ponder again these seemingly mythical Celestials. I entered into a mystery that I’ve been trying to wrap my arms around for a long time, and recently I was blessed with further clarity. Enter my conversation Corin Grillo, author of the book “The Angel Experiment: A 21-Day Magical Adventure to Heal Your Life” published by New World Library, and founder of “The Angel Alchemy Academy." In this episode, Corin shares many of the details surrounding a beautiful miracle that changed her life and explains how the unique intercession of Angels on that day started an ongoing relationship with these Celestial beings. As a trained psychotherapist, Corin was already working to enhance the well-being of others, but by channeling the assistance her Angelic advocates she has enhanced her gifts as a healer and teacher. A big part of her role as a teacher can be experienced by the Angel curious in her book, “The Angel Experiment,” where she offers a 21-day series of invocations, prayers, and exercises organized in a way that puts Angelic friendships to work multidimensionally for anyone that’s ready to peel back another layer to their life. I enjoyed this conversation with Corin Grillo, and I’m thankful for the special answers she shared with me, a message with clarification offered by the Angels surrounding her during our conversation. EP. 83 - The Open Mic Ft. Chase Bonin of the Lake Charles Comedy Scene ========== I talk a lot about love and compassion on this show. I truly believe they are medicine, and two of the greatest gives that can be given and received, but there’s another very human gift that brings great healing, and I know I don’t talk about it enough, and that gift is laughter. When I look back on my life, laughter has often been a huge component to my well being, and a good belly laugh has always been a sign that reconciliation may have occurred, and deep grief is settling, or a cosmic awareness of the silliness and beauty of life has hit me square in my forehead. The truth is, I want to get the great joke and laugh through my tears, and these beings that have the ability to pull the chuckles out of me when I need it most are acting as healers. I had to laugh at myself yet again when Chase Bonin, local comedian and organizer of the Lake Charles Comedy scene, came in for a visit on Find the Good News. I’m guilty of being one of those people, you know, the ones that say, “I wish we this-or-that here in our area." Well, the joke was on me. I truly didn’t know we had an active and growing stand-up comedy scene in Southwest Louisiana, and visiting with Chase reminded me, yet again, that I don’t always know what I think I know. Chase loves comedy and is a student of stand-up, and he is using that love and high-interest to bring local and regional talent to our area. I enjoyed hearing about his road to stand-up. He’s honest, funny, and somewhere between those things I found a really authentic bit of wisdom as well, and that’s really good news. I invite you to listen to my conversation with Chase Bonin, a really funny guy with an open mic if you think you might be funny too. The world may still be trying to figure out how to kickstart all the old systems, but for the time being, just lay those things down. Chase Bonin has some chuckles to share. So, take a drive, a walk, put in some earbuds, then dust off your smile. EP. 82 - The Encouragers Ft. Ashley Gatte of Empire of the Seed ========== Sitting down at the right-round table in studio with a guest is starting to seem like a distant memory. It’s hard for me to express this, but there is something special about the space where I meet with my guests. It conveys an openness, creative energy, and joy that is reflective of the types of conversations I hoped to have with each person that’s come to visit. Since the stay-at-home orders associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the serious distancing measure required, I haven’t been able to meet in person with the good people that make our local communities better. Before our world hit a massive pause, I had the pleasure of visiting with several people doing good works in our communities. The conversation I’m sharing with you today is one of those recorded in studio, and as I listened to it again it made me nostalgic for a time not too long ago when proximity to new people was a commodity. Today, I’m sharing my visit with Ashley Gatte of Empire of the Seed. Empire of the Seed is an altruistic entity in Southwest Louisiana that has a long plan to invigorate an already existing cultural landscape by revitalizing historic properties into venues and businesses that expand upon a community with a rich mix of art, music, and cuisine. The Empire of the Seed has seen many successes, and the people of the Lake Charles area have benefited in many ways. After meeting with Ashely Gatte, it was easy to draw lines from many of their accomplishments directly to her efforts as the President of Historic Events. It was clear to me that helping others reach for their full potential was highly important to Ashley. This was a gift that others had shared with her, and giving it back seemed to be one of the ways she has shown her gratitude. As a talented lifelong musician, Ashley has shared her passion for song with her community. Combining that personal passion with the resources of Empire of the Seed has given birth to venues where other artists and musicians can share their love in turn. From my perspective, this is good compounding on good, a type of rebirth and renewal that the world sorely needs more of. She’s an athlete, a planner, an organizer, a songwriter, musician, and singer, but most important of all, she is kind, filled with joy, and carries a smile that makes a person want to share their own. I’ve enjoyed many digital conversations with some wonderful people since the coronavirus shutdown, but revisiting my conversation with Ashley makes me long for a time that I hope isn’t too far away, when I can sit down and breath the same air as my guests. I invite you to listen to my conversation with Ashley Gatte, one of the good people who has done good works in the world, someone that I am sure is ready to continue doing that in any way she can. The world may have pressed pause, but let’s set some time aside, feel some joy, share a space for a little while, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS ON PATREON >> www.Patreon.com/FindTheGoodNews ========== CONNECT WITH ASHLEY GATTE >> www.facebook.com/ashley.gatte.71 LEARN ABOUT EMPIRE OF THE SEED >> www.empireoftheseed.com/ ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com ========== SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS ••••••••••••• SULPHUR TODAY >> www.facebook.com/sulphurtoday / #SulphurToday ••••••••••••• BRIMSTONE MUSEUM >> www.brimstonemuseum.org or Call (337) 527-0357 •••••••••••••
EP. 81 - The Comforter Ft. Eugenie Tullos ========== More often than not, my visits with guests of Find the Good News take place nearly a month or more before they air. Normally, that’s not a sobering or surreal experience, but so much has changed in our world since the time that this episode was recorded. Not long after this visit, as I’m quite certain you know, the world was changed by the new coronavirus and the medical complications brought on by COVID-19. Social distancing. Quarantine. Masks. Gloves. Disinfectant. Shortages. Misinformation. Sacrifices. Selfishness. Selflessness. Despair. Hope. Isolation. Innovation. Lies. Heroes. Takers. Helpers. These are just the words that come immediately into my mind as I reflect on the current state of the world as framed by my conversation with the guest in this episode, Eugenie Tullos. If anything, the state of the world today actually made key moments in our conversation stand out even more. Eugenie Tullos is a one of the helpers, the heroes, the innovators, one of the beings that has been working in the world in a selfless way, sacrificing, and comforting others with presence, truth, and hope. Her job as a loving care-giver has required physical closeness for many years, so hearing our visit in the light of this time of distancing reminded me of the crucial value of human proximity, especially now that we don’t have it. This conversation isn’t about the global pandemic, but it is filled with advice, perspectives, and information about the very best nature of humanity. It’s that best nature, Eugenie’s nature, the nature of love, care, and truth, that will be so important when the blanket of this virus is lifted from the world. Human closeness will return, and when it does, I plan to cherish it in ways reflective of this visit. I invite you to listen to my conversation with Eugenie Tullos, a time not too long ago when I, like many others, may have taken those around me for granted in small, almost undetectable ways, a time when togetherness was in abundance, presence was a luxury, and the smiling faces of strangers were not covered by protective masks. Ep. 80 - The Clunky Oars - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Greg Soden of The Classical Idea Podcast========== It wasn’t long after I started listening to podcasts that I got the bug to produce one, the one you’re listening too right now. Over this past year of producing and listening, I’ve learned a lot, and whether they know it, many of the hosts and producers of my favorite podcasts have been unwitting instructors. Long before the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, I had an opportunity to visit with the gracious host and producer of one such show, “The Classical Ideas Podcast.” I don’t know how you discover new podcasts, but I typically find new shows when I search for specific topics, and the day that I landed on Greg Soden’s show, I was searching for conversations about one of my favorite wisdom books, “The Tao Te Ching." As it turns out, it’s one of Greg’s favorite books as well. I listened to that episode, and then another, and then another, and before long I was a devoted listener, subscriber, and Patreon supporter. Through the course of Greg’s show, I feel like I got to know him and his interests as he would interview his diverse range of guests across the spectrum of religion and philosophy. It’s strange how that happens, how in the course of interviewing others there is a transference of small details that accumulate over time, creating a wonderfully rich portrait of the host. That’s how I came to learn many of the details of Greg Soden’s journey to “The Classical Ideas Podcast,” which was born during his time as the language arts and religious studies teacher in Columbia, Missouri. Greg is now a teacher and assistant trainer for the University of Missouri College of Education’s K-12 program, and he is still bringing us new episodes of “The Classical Ideas Podcast,” where he shares his wide-spectrum conversations. He’s brought us colorful and interesting interviews, such as Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ian Johnson, and the daughters of famous Zen philosopher Allen Watts. “The Classical Ideas Podcast” has brought us conversations about indigenous religion, Unitarian Universalism, Buddhism, Taoism, Sufism, the Tao Te Ching, the Bhagavad Gita, St. Francis of Assisi, Evangelical Christianity, the Baha’i, Nordic studies, and many, many more. I felt that Greg and I had an instant rapport, and I hope you will sense this during our visit. I’m grateful for his time, and for the good work, he is doing to help anyone seeking multicultural and interfaith knowledge to find it. I believe this with all my heart; this world will always need beings like Greg Soden. Ep. 79 - The 1-Hour Mountain - A COVID-19 Beacon Series Interview Ft. Diana Vallette========== Today, human beings all over the world are making social and economic sacrifices to stop the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, COVID-19. Now, I’m going back to visit with many of the Good Newsy guests that helped build the foundation of this show to learn how they’re navigating these strange times. In this special Beacon Series episode, I visit with my spiritual sister, ally, and friend, Diana Vallette. My proximity to Diana mostly begins and ends within social media apps, and yet I feel like I really do know her. From my perspective, one of Diana’s great gifts is her ability to self reflect, and then share her discoveries with little-to-no filter. Since the time I connected with Diana online, I feel like I’ve watched her go through a series of changes, and that’s one of her other great gifts; she allows herself to change. I could tell you that I wanted to talk to her as a part of this series because I wanted her perspective on homeschooling or spin a yarn that it was because of her spiritual contemplations. The truth is, both of those things are true, but honestly I just wanted to talk to her, and I’m glad I did. Diana opens a door and makes a safe space for people to explore their spiritual boundaries, and that’s a place I like to hang out. Full disclosure? I needed this conversation. It was invigorating, exciting, and I could feel my heart and mind connecting throughout our talk. Ep. 78 - The Spiritual Gumbo - A COVID-19 Beacon Series Interview Ft. Carl and Chelsea Boudreaux, Owners of the Yoga Center and Stellar Beans in Lake Charles, Louisiana========== Today, human beings all over the world are making social and economic sacrifices to stop the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, COVID-19. Now, I’m going back to visit with many of the Good Newsy guests that helped build the foundation of this show to learn how they’re navigating these strange times. In this special Beacon Series episode, I visit with Carl and Chelsea Boudreaux, owners of the Yoga Center and Stellar Beans in Lake Charles, Louisiana Carl and Chelsea were the first couple I visited with on Find the Good News, so I thought it would be great to check in with them during this time COVID-19 distancing to see how they were modifying their businesses and personal lives to cope. I’m so thankful that they shared their time and advice with me. As a small business owner myself, it provided me with some comfort knowing that they were facing some of the same challenges, but more importantly that they were using this time to be creative with their solutions. With candor, they offer solid human advice for anyone that’s still trying to figure out how to sail these seas. The bright light they offer is perspective, applying the spiritual and wellness practices that have defined their businesses and personal lives. Even with all they have to do in adjusting their two businesses, and their personal lives, they still took the time to visit with me, and I am thankful. With this COVID-19 Beacon Series, I invite you to take a break from mainstream news and spend some time with good people that are dealing with some of the same struggles you are. Now, seek out that inner space, relax, open your mind, and press play on a little good news. ==========SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS ON PATREON >> www.Patreon.com/FindTheGoodNews ==========FOLLOW THE YOGA CENTER >> www.facebook.com/YogaLakeCharles==========FOLLOW STELLAR BEANS >> www.facebook.com/StellarBeans==========FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com==========SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS•••••••••••••SULPHUR TODAY >> www.facebook.com/sulphurtoday / #SulphurToday•••••••••••••BRIMSTONE MUSEUM >> www.brimstonemuseum.org or Call (337) 527-0357•••••••••••••
Ep. 77 - The Home Team - A COVID-19 Beacon Series Interview Ft. Kari Hankins Founder of the SWLA Youth Foundation========== Today, human beings all over the world are making social and economic sacrifices to stop the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, COVID-19. Now, I’m going back to visit with many of the Good Newsy guests that helped build the foundation of this show to learn how they’re navigating these strange times. In this special Beacon Series episode, I visit with the founder of the Southwest Louisiana Youth Foundation, and creator of the Truth, Facts, and Lies youth program, Kari Hankins. Kari was one of the first people that agreed to be on Find the Good News, another person right here at home that helped get the Good News on a solid trajectory right out of the gate. Kari is the founder of the non-profit, the Southwest Louisiana Youth Foundation, and the creator of the Truth, Facts, and Lies youth program, but she’s also a mother and a nurse practitioner. Kari is an honest and positive individual and filled with Type-A energy, so I was very interested to find out how the COVID-19 winter was affecting her normal momentum, her life at home, at work, and her non-profit programs. It seems that she and her family, like many, are taking it in stride, making the very best of the situation, and most important of all, they are working as a team. She reminds me that we are all in this together, here in our region, in our state, across the country, and throughout the world. With this COVID-19 Beacon Series, I invite you to take a break from mainstream news and spend some time with good people that are dealing with some of the same struggles you are. Now, seek out that inner space, relax, open your mind, and press play on a little good news. ==========SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS ON PATREON >> www.Patreon.com/FindTheGoodNews ==========FOLLOW KARI HANKINS >> www.facebook.com/kari.c.hankins==========FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com==========SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS•••••••••••••SULPHUR TODAY >> www.facebook.com/sulphurtoday / #SulphurToday•••••••••••••BRIMSTONE MUSEUM >> www.brimstonemuseum.org or Call (337) 527-0357•••••••••••••
Ep. 76 - The Sound Of Your Name - A COVID-19 Beacon Series Interview Ft. Grammy Winner Mickey Smith, Jr.========== Today, human beings all over the world are making social and economic sacrifices to stop the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, COVID-19. Now, I’m going back to visit with many of the Good Newsy guests that helped build the foundation of this show to learn how they’re navigating these strange times. In this special Beacon Series episode, I visit with Southwest Louisiana educator, and recent Grammy Winner, Mickey Smith, Jr. Mickey was the very first Good Newsy, my very first guest on Find the Good News. He really set the tone for the whole show, helping get that first foot forward on a good path. It was nice to circle back around and talk to him. As an educator, there was an almost instant disruption to his day-to-day routine, and he was very candid about how he is coping with the major changes to his life during this COVID-19 winter. Mickey’s influence has always gone so far beyond just music. I wasn’t surprised to find that he’s using this time to point his insight inward, reflecting on how he can use this time to better himself. In our visit, Mickey reminded me that none of us are ever truly finished, and if we allow it, we continue to become even better versions of who we are. With this COVID-19 Beacon Series, I invite you to take a break from mainstream news and spend some time with good people that are dealing with some of the same struggles you are. Now, find a space, take some time, relax if you can, open your mind, and press play on a little good news. ==========SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS ON PATREON >> www.Patreon.com/FindTheGoodNews ==========FOLLOW MICKEY SMITH, JR. >> www.facebook.com/hubermickey.smithjr==========FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com==========SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS•••••••••••••SULPHUR TODAY >> www.facebook.com/sulphurtoday / #SulphurToday•••••••••••••BRIMSTONE MUSEUM >> www.brimstonemuseum.org or Call (337) 527-0357•••••••••••••
Ep. 75 - The Skills We Have - A COVID-19 Beacon Series Interview Ft. Artists Danny and Morgan Allain==========Today, human beings all over the world are making social and economic sacrifices to stop the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, COVID-19. In this special Beacon Series episode, I visit with the husband and wife dynamic artistic duo of Danny and Morgan Allain. Danny and Morgan are Good Newsies, past guests of my Find the Good News podcast, and I wanted to reconnect with them to find out how their family is facing the challenges of the C19 spread. I was not surprised to find that they were approaching these hard times with every skill they have, including their good nature and cheer. Like many, they spend their days doing the real work it takes to keep their family safe and secure, but at the same time, they both continue to share their artistic gifts with others so they don’t feel so alone in this time of distancing. Talking with them reminded me how nice it is to hear other human voices laughing, and to see people smile. I think that’s something we’ll all need to cherish in the weeks and months ahead. I invite you to take a break from mainstream news and spend some time with good people that are dealing with some of the same struggles you are. Now, press play on a little good news.==========SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS ON PATREON >> www.Patreon.com/FindTheGoodNews ==========FOLLOW DANNY ALLAIN >> www.facebook.com/danny.allain.9==========FOLLOW MORGAN ALLAIN >> www.facebook.com/HopelessClassicist==========FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com==========SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS•••••••••••••SULPHUR TODAY >> www.facebook.com/sulphurtoday / #SulphurToday•••••••••••••BRIMSTONE MUSEUM >> www.brimstonemuseum.org or Call (337) 527-0357•••••••••••••
