Nic Wiessler didn't start his career as the founder of the premium denim and knitwear brand WiesMade. Because before he was even considering launching his brand, he was a very successful retail leader for over 20 years with some of the country's most exciting and innovative companies. It started at GAP, where he ran the stock room at his local store. When Nic graduated college, he took on other leadership roles in retail with Lucky Brand and later as the District Manager in Northern California for Restoration Hardware (RH). In 2009 he took on a DM role with Cole Haan and ultimately became the Head of Retail, overseeing 90 stores as they de-coupled from Nike. Nic joined me at Bonobos in 2014 as part of a team that built it from a scrappy small group of 10 stores into a large 42-store fleet. Most recently, he was in the Director of Retail role at Guideboat, where he spent time in the design room working with their lux outdoor apparel line. After two years of work, he will launch his brand WiesMade this month, which exclusively sources every piece from "dirt to denim" in the USA, and Nic is now working directly with two mills to develop his own fabrics for his brand.Nic is a Northern California native, went to school at Sonoma State University, and enjoys everything the beauty of the Northern California coast has to offer, including free diving, spearfishing, and surfing. And the dude has been around. After getting his start as an intern at Puma before shifting over to design work for Timberland, Cole Haan, Teva, and Ralph Lauren, Greg backed away from the mega-brand to co-found one of the seminal underground (now sadly defunct) footwear brands of the aughts: New England Outwear Company. After that he plunged back into a behemoth with a senior design gig at the behemoth that is Clark's, and then Huckberry, before spending the last three years regaining total freedom with his design pen and building out his own factory in the US handsewn capital of Lewiston, Maine to create EasyMoc,  a rising brand that combines time-honored handsewn moccasin construction techniques with creativity, a periodic dash of Japanese fashion, and a deep dedication to comfort. So what's it like to work at a gigantic shoe brand vs your own small workshop? How much of a revival is the once-massive Maine shoemaking industry really seeing? “One of the greatest successes of my life is seeing success come from someone else because of how I supported them,” says Bianca Kofman, Interim Area Manager at Cole Haan, interviewed by fellow co-lab member, Denise Baca. Born and raised in CA, Bianca attended San Diego State University, majoring in Kinesiology with the intention of becoming a physical therapist. Right before graduating from college, Bianca unexpectedly started working for Pura Vida Bracelets through a college connection. During her time as Product Manager at the socially conscious accessory brand, she increased their charity collection from 3 bracelet designs to 100 and was officially introduced to the fashion industry. Soon after this role, she began her fashion blog, ultimately connecting her with brands which led her to fashion styling and creating her own agency, B. Rose Creative. She is currently Interim Area Manager for Cole Haan's Bay Area stores, and is a self-proclaimed lifelong learner who hasn't ruled out any future career ideas.

The world of work is changing rapidly, yet dress shoes have barely changed since the 1800s. Through material innovation and a unique vertical supply chain, Amberjack is creating a new type of men's dress shoe. After years working with big companies like Cole Haan, Allen Edmonds, and Adidas, the founder Jonathan Peters got frustrated by how bleak the landscape of dress shoes had become. Work is changing, technology is advancing, yet dress shoes are stuck in the past. The brand wanted to create something new by avoiding the complicated supply chains full of shortcuts and compromises, and partnered with one of the best tanneries in the world. They've created entirely new materials for soles that are extra comfortable, and put leather and science fiction into the hands of craftsmen in Portugal. They also use 100% plastic-free packaging and promise their shoes will last a lot longer than the fast-fashion, disposable dress shoes they share a price-point with. In this episode of the MenswearStyle Podcast we interview Jonathan Peters, Founder of Amberjack about his career to date, and the unique concept of this new brand operating within the dress shoe category.  The idea came after the realisation of feeling unconnected with his shoes whilst working within the corporate world. He felt he could bring the same excitement many guys feel with clothing brands to the footwear world.  Our host Peter Brooker and Jonathan also chat about early prototypes, how to make shoes built for comfort, how the brand is adopting sustainability, and how to get a 10,000+ waitlist for a debut shoe.Whilst we have your attention, be sure to sign up to our daily newsletter here. Listen (click this link if you don’t see the player) and be sure to subscribe, rate, and review (Apple Podcasts) and follow (Spotify)! SHOW HIGHLIGHTS 2:00 - How does pumpkin spice scented cleaning supplies sound to you? 3:00 - NBA player Russell Westbrook left an $8000 tip for the cleaning staff at the hotel he was staying at in the NBA bubble. JLee says the cleaning staff are the hardest people working in the hospitality industry.  4:30 - Are you the type of person who steals things off of the cleaning staff’s cart? JLee takes some of those good hotel toiletries.  7:30 - KD thinks these stories of high tips put downward pressure on those with average incomes who want to treat wait staff well.  8:45 - KD brings up the hit that credit cards have left on the tips baristas may receive. Fill up those tip jars again! 9:45 - Do you like when wait staff asks if you’d like to leave a tip? Tim thinks it leaves a little too much pressure on the customer. 11:30 - TrustRadius released the 2020 People of Color in Tech Report in September. Tim shares some findings from the report including People of Color (POC) reporting that 57% of them haven’t had issues with race at work. Tim is shocked by this number and thought it would be much lower.  13:30 - KD reminds us that we have to think about what industry this survey took place in and that the tech industry may differ greatly from other ones.  16:15 - Tim shares a few more survey findings. He said almost equally POC and white people believe D&I initiatives are effective but executives had less faith in the initiatives. JLee hopes that there would be more faith in these initiatives among all respondents.  19:30 - Tim compared faith in D&I initiatives to some other system in a business and he thinks the effectiveness numbers would be considered a failure in other parts of the business.  21:00 - JLee is not surprised that many people don’t feel comfortable talking about race with HR based on her experience working in HR.  22:00 - Tim asks KD if he thinks the cat is out of the bag and people have discovered that HR works for the company, not for the people. KD thinks the best HR employees have a balance between serving the company’s interest and the employee’s interest.  27:00 - The report asks POC how they would prefer to be supported by their company. The #1 answer was diversity recruitment followed by a diversity task force.  30:30 - Last topic of the day: Tim is a shoe addict. Cole Haan (one of his favorite brand) made Slack inspired shoes. Tim asks the crew what collaboration do you want to see of a shoe brand and a non-apparel brand.

Jak oni to nazywają - są to buty inspirowane “by the pandemic related rise of remote working” czyli wzrost zainteresowania pracę zdalną poprzez pandemię. A tak naprawdę są to buty w czterech kolorach, które są obecne w logo Slacka te buty się nazywają Generation Zerøgrand. Mają kosztować około 120$ i powinny być dostępne online właściwie już od dzisiaj.

Matt Gagnon is a professional Co-Active coach certified by the Coaches Training Institute, credentialed by the International Coach Federation, a member of the Forbes Coaches Council, keynote speaker, best selling author, and brings 15 years of corporate sales and leadership experience…but there is more to a person than just their accomplishments…there is a journey.Matt believes in living a life aligned with your values. We all have up to five core values - that when honored, evoke the best in us. The problem is that many people live life with values defined by others leaving one feeling empty and like they are never enough. Below is a snapshot of his journey and why he has chosen to serve others as a mindset coach.Born and raised in the woods of central Maine where he graduated from Thomas College with a degree in Marketing Management and where he met his future wife, Nikki. As an athlete, leader within his school and community, Matt did everything to check off the boxes that would describe a successful person. He even had an internship with NBA Champions, The San Antonio Spurs in 2003 where he was mentored by future Oklahoma Thunder General Manager, Sam Presti.By the summer of 2006 Matt was recruited and relocated to Austin, TX by Cole Haan. Matt would spend the next 9 years building and leading powerful teams for some of the most iconic brands on the planet including Under Armour, Carter's/Osh Kosh.Matt was living what looked like a successful life with a six-figure job, nice house, nice car, nice clothes, etc. Behind the curtain he was actually spirally out of control resulting in chronic illness, depression, addiction, and an attempted suicide. After 15 years in the retail industry Matt had three major events in his life that set him on a course into entrepreneurship and coaching. In April of 2013 Matt's son, Fox, was born. As soon as Matt held his son for the first time he knew that he wanted to show his son that it's never too late to pursue your true calling in life and to build something of your own. One month later Matt would lose his best friend and mentor, his Dad. The quote from Matt below best speaks to his experience:"For 15 years I sold my soul to the corporate lifestyle. I missed birthday parties, family events, holidays, funerals, anniversaries...I was missing out on life. With having little to no boundaries at work, I burned myself out to the point I had to go on medical leave with several severe and life threatening health issues."The third and final event that spurred his quest to serve others as a coach was by the spring of 2015 when Matt's health issues become too complicated to continue his work in retail and this is where he started to focus on his health and building a new future for him and his family. He was diagnosed with a handful of rare illnesses that impacted his physical and mental health…to this day Matt says it was the best thing to ever happen to him. After leaning into his faith and surrendering control, Matt stopped being a victim and chose to see his adversity as a call to adventure. Jobless, negative bank account, infant son, unemployed spouse, and a new home, Matt used a purely grass-roots effort to build a thriving international coaching business. He focused on protecting his supply lines (prayer time, sleep, nutrition, fitness, inner circle of friends) and rediscovered his core values. He chose to write his own comeback story.Today Matt is helping transform lives across the globe by encouraging people to rediscover their core values, regain control of their lives, and empower them to live the life they have always wanted. For Amy Shecter, CEO of Glamsquad, the handshake is full of meaning. She has observed throughout her career—working with major brands such as Lady Foot Locker, Diesel, Donna Karan, Cole Haan and Tory Burch—how much is revealed in the way someone shakes hands…and how it's something that boys are raised to know about but girls are not. She observes, “How you shake a hand indicates how you feel about yourself and how you feel about the job.” She believes that when someone has a firm handshake, stands tall and looks you in the eye, they project confidence. As she grows Glamsquad, the on-demand hair, make-up and nail beauty service and product line, she's always mentoring, teaching and helping her team to develop the skills and experience they need to move into leadership positions. While she loves her current role, she always has her eye on the bigger picture of helping people—including herself—to thrive professionally while being fulfilled personal, embracing the lessons of a handshake all along the way. 033: Resume Reconstruction Camp

Most resumes I see, from candidates at all stages in their career, are what I call “data sheets.” “Here's where I worked; here's my job title; here are my dates of employment; here are my job duties.” Lather, rinse, repeat. What you are essentially telling a potential employer is: “I was hired to do a job…and I did it.” Not a very compelling marketing message. The resumes I create for my clients, and those most professional resume writers create, are branded marketing documents. They tell the potential employer two critical things: 1.  What makes you different from all the others competing for the same position. 2.  How well you did your former jobs. Let's start with what makes you different. This is known as personal branding. Here's a completely non-differentiating branding message: “Highly motivated entry-level candidate with strong work ethic and great interpersonal skills.” Here's another one: “Hard worker, with a bachelor's degree in BLANK and excellent communication skills.” The acid test for your branding statement is two-fold: 1.  Does it differentiate you? 2.  Is it compelling? Here are a couple of compelling branding statements from my clients: From a CFO/Controller: “Senior executive with a consistent record of successful leadership roles extending beyond financial operations to include HR, IT, and facilities management” From an early-career candidate: “Offering eight years' experience in broadcast television operations in New York City, coupled with an internship at Lifetime and a bachelor's degree in Film Production” For an Industrial Sales Manager: “Known for developing, implementing, and managing start-up initiatives that create incremental growth across multiple industries and channels”   Here are three ways to approach developing your personal brand: 1. What have I been consistently successful in doing? What have others consistently asked me to do? 2. What's my secret sauce? 3. What are my brand attributes that, in combination, make me stand out? The second aspect of a branded resume are bulleted accomplishments that tell how well you did your job. The “data sheets” I received usually include what we resume writers call “death by bullets” – a laundry list of bulleted job duties. If there are any accomplishments in there, they are buried in amongst all the job duties – essentially diluting their effectiveness. Your job duties should be in a paragraph of no more than 3-4 lines. Bullets are reserved for quantifiable accomplishments. Tips for creating high-impact accomplishments: 1. Start each with an action verb. 2. Front-load the most impactful part of the accomplishment. 3. Quantify. Here are examples of high-impact accomplishments from resumes I've written for a 20-something client: “Generated $500k in revenue in 2016—a 26% increase over 2015; 2017 Q1 and Q2 results were 12% over previous year.” “Developed a model-acquisition system utilizing a spreadsheet to track all activities including contracts, visas, and hiring processes—significantly reducing manhours and improving compliance.” “Recruited three full-time employees and four interns for roles throughout the organization by identifying individuals with the right skill set and motivation and making recommendations to director.” “Cultivated relationships with clients in fitness/athleisure, fashion, jewelry, and beauty such as Peloton, Lululemon, Cole Haan, Carolina Herrera, Saks, London Fog, Target, Tiffany & Co., and Coach. “ Here are accomplishments from a client with approximately eight years' full-time experience: “Promoted to Commercial Coordinator based on input from sales staff to supervisor about work quality.“ “Managed an average 81 advertisers with 1436 commercial spots weekly, receiving compliments from multiple advertising agencies for accuracy of work.” “Achieved 100% accuracy in responding to change requests.” “Responded to a last-minute emergency change request by an ad agency for a major motion picture company, quickly making the change to avoid legal ramifications for the advertiser.” “Resolved a potentially costly problem with a Fortune 500 company and their advertising agency that resulted in no financial liability for WPIX 11.” “Trained four interns from local colleges on all aspects of commercial coordination.”   To visit my website: www.exclusivecareercoaching.com Follow My YouTube channel (Lesa Edwards); it's chocked full of value career management content is easily digestible bites.
