What if one of the most powerful tools to boost voter turnout isn't a flashy campaign or a new voting law—but being randomly forced to work the polls? In this episode, we explore a surprising study of women in 1930s Spain who were randomly assigned to serve as poll workers—just after they gained the right to vote. The results? A massive, 30-point increase in future voting behavior. Is this just a historical curiosity—or a window into how habit, exposure, and civic experience shape democracy? We speak with researcher Toni Rodon about his paper Working for Democracy: Poll Officers and the Turnout Gender Gap, and unpack what this unexpected experiment teaches us about gender, political culture, and the power of participation.

Nigel Farage could "pick up the phone" and speak to Donald Trump about relations between the US and UK if he wanted to - but he has to focus on building Reform UK, one of his key allies has said.Gerry Gunster, the founder and chief executive of Washington-based Gunster Strategies Worldwide, told Chopper's Political Podcast that relations between the pair were strong. His comments come amid speculation that the relationship might have soured after Farage did not witness in person Trump's swearing in Washington in January.Farage told GB News this week that he had not spoken to Trump since he became President in January as he did not want to cut across formal links between London and Washington. However Gunster said: "If Nigel Farage wanted to pick up the phone and get hold of the president of the United States, he would do it. "Nigel is not one of those guys that is going to do something like that unless it is of the utmost importance, because Nigel has a job to do to build this Reform party. "And the President of the United States, as you can see, has his job to do. I don't think that the fact that there hasn't been any 'talks with each other' means anything."This week, Christopher Hope is also joined by Labour MP Jake Richards to discuss digital IDs, as well as Rory Cellan-Jones who discusses his battle with Parkinson's. This week's episode of This Week In White Supremacy kicks off with 1HOOD discussing the first two months of Donald Trump's re-elected presidency and the impact his tariff plans are having on increasing stock market volatility after a historical two-day drop in the DOW Jones of 2000 points resulting in a financial havoc that has affected both Wall Street and Main Street Americans.Miracle shifts the focus to the societal impact of these economic changes, including fears surrounding potential, yet looming, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security cuts by Elon Musk and DOGE despite the backlash and recent uprising coming from middle-class and elderly white Americans.Saïd expands the conversation toward a spicy debate confronting the tension within the Democratic party, challenging the anti-trump responses from key party figures like Barak Obama and Kamala Harris, arguing how their past ties to perpetual war, bloodshed from controversial drone strikes, and bad policies set up America for its last and final reckoning for the hypocrisy and inactivity that plague American politics. The episode ends with a call to action for building a better future and highlights discussions on campaign finance reform, community support, grassroots organizing, and the importance of standing strong against systemic white supremacy. --To help us build liberated communities through arts, education, and social justice visit our website 1hood.org to purchase your official 1HOOD apparel or consider making a tax-deductible donation to 1Hood Media. --WATCH THE SHOW: youtube.com/@twiws--FOLLOW 1HOOD youtube.com/@1hoodfacebook.com/1hoodmediainstagram.com/1hoodmediax.com/1hood--About:This Week In White Supremacy is the 1Hood podcast discussing the cultural effects and weekly injustices surrounding white supremacy; through intelligent, insightful commentary and often comedic conversations this podcast is geared towards adults who want to digest the latest news and events with humor and Hip-Hop.--DISCLAIMERS: The views and opinions expressed during this presentation are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 1Hood Media, 1Hood Power, and or its affiliates. In this week's episode of This Week in White Supremacy, 1HOOD explores the judicial system's role in combating the deportation of immigrants and US citizens, contrasting Trump and Elon's trojan horse style tactics with Chuck Schumer and the Democrats' reluctance to fight back against the destructive implications of the rise of fascism in America. The discussion highlights the lack of strong leadership within the Democratic Party when it come to standing up against the growing authoritarianism under the Trump administration, touching on Chuck Schumer's recent bowing down and opening up to the teflon Don by voting for the continuing resolution to prevent the US government from shutting down again, as well as how Kamala Harris' alignment with Biden's policies has turned into the internal collapse of the Democratic Party which has potentially damaged the Dems beyond repair.1HOOD also discuss the growing fear and pacification among the American populace in the face of increasing authoritarianism. They emphasize the need for collective action and robust resistance against the encroaching fascist ideologies; ultimately calling for more forceful opposition to preserve democratic values and protect marginalized communities. Gear up for a hard-hitting recap of the MG Show as Jeffrey Pedersen and Shannon Townsend tear into "Everything Trump Does Democrats Must Oppose; No Income Tax?"—a patriot-fueled expose that exposes the swamp's dirty tricks and rallies the MAGA faithful! The episode kicks off with a bombshell: Democrats are being baited into opposing Trump's bold move to eliminate income tax, a pro-American policy that could free citizens from government overreach. The hosts call out this orchestrated resistance as part of a meta-narrative of hate against Trump, backed by the shocking reveal of a paid protest at Trump Tower in Chicago—where they showed who funded it, proving the deep state's hand in the game! In the first hour, the cultural chaos intensifies as the meltdown over Elon's DOGE gets louder, with Jeffrey and Shannon cheering Musk's Department of Government Efficiency as a win for America-First values, despite the leftist uproar. They also rolled out a fiery segment from Jesse Watters, outlining Democrats' previous positions, exposing their long history of obstructionism. The second hour dives deeper, linking this hate to a mass psychosis of totalitarianism and menticide—the killing of the mind—showing how the swamp manipulates thought to crush Trump's vision. The clincher? The Massie issue kicks off MAGA hate, with Thomas Massie's defiance against Trump sparking a firestorm—Jeffrey and Shannon back the President's fight, seeing Massie's stance as a betrayal that fuels division. The episode explodes with Trump's bold Tesla purchase, a defiant move amid the relentless assault on Tesla's American innovation. But the bombshell? Gen Flynn's claim of an assassination contract on Alex Jones takes a dark twist—whispers are growing that Flynn himself might be part of the problem, suspected of running psyops to infiltrate and undermine the Patriot, America-First, MAGA movement. The hosts dig deep, questioning if the deep state's got a mole in their ranks. The Trump-Massie feud heats up as the Massie crew gets sassy with Trump, but Jeffrey and Shannon call out Massie's betrayal of the MAGA mission with fierce clarity. In this episode of the DMZ America Podcast, hosts Ted Rall and Scott Stantis dive into the Democrats' alarming ineffectiveness and inability to push back against President Trump, a weakness laid bare by Congressional Democrats' limp reaction to his commanding speech before a joint session of Congress. Rall, a passionate progressive cartoonist, and Stantis, a razor-sharp conservative illustrator, bring their ideological clash to the table, dissecting the party's half-hearted gestures—symbolic votes, vague statements, and little else—that crumble under Trump's relentless drive. The duo debates whether Democrats need to escalate their efforts to reclaim relevance. Rall demands a fiercer approach: nationwide protests, targeted filibusters, and a cohesive message to rally their base. Stantis, skeptical of their spine, questions if they've got the stomach for such a fight or if they're too fractured to unite. Is this just a fleeting stumble after a bruising election, or a chilling omen of the party's decline into irrelevance? With wit and grit, Rall and Stantis explore whether the Democrats can adapt and rise—or if this signals a deeper, existential crisis foreshadowing political doom in an era dominated by Trump's unyielding force. The DMZ America Podcast is recorded weekly by political cartoonists Ted Rall and Scott Stantis. In this episode of Uncommon Sense with Ginny Robinson, we're breaking down Trump's recent speech to Congress—what he said, what it means, and where we need to see action. I loved everything he said, but as always, words are only half the battle. We need real action, especially when it comes to issues like releasing the Epstein list, addressing RFK Jr.'s recent (shockingly) pro-vaccine articles, and ensuring America First means exactly that—not mass deportations followed by importing Indian slave labor to drive down our wages. Let's not cancel out the success of deporting illegals like that.We also need a firm stand against AI-generated mRNA vaccines, no more IVF, and a more cautious approach when it comes to Elon Musk—because while he's done some great things, blind trust is never the answer. Trump's message was strong, and it resonated, but we need to make sure his policies and actions match up with his words. Glennda and Tyler have a policy to not talk politics on their podcast. But Tyler had a dream the night before filming that he needed to share… and the next thing we knew, we were kind of talking politics. It was a huge happening in the world and has a huge impact on our industry. Don't worry, we kept it light, fun, and neutral. No anger on these airwaves!

This Week In White Supremacy 1HOOD braces for the ripple effects of Elon Musk taking subversive control over Trump's second administration which may lead to the fall of the U.S. government.1HOOD opens this episode questioning why Elon Musk continues to tout DOGE's influence on public policy despite not holding an official position in Trump's second administration proposing the conspiracy that Elon is the one running the United States based on his dramatic hosting of press conferences from inside the White House Oval Office. Treble leans into this unprecedented scenario and tilts the flow of thought to the scale of economic repercussions introduced by Trump's federal layoffs and their potential impacts on the local housing market in Washington, D.C. and what that could escalate to in the future.Jasiri then transitions the conversation to a DEI lawsuit filed against Starbucks by the Missouri Attorney General, alleging that diversity, equity, and inclusion policies have negatively affected the company due to not having enough white people to serve coffee to polarized Americans who are addicted to the caffeinated brand. Finally, the hosts read and respond to Blackmail from a Free Speech TV viewer named Laura Garrett who is concerned about the tone between Miracle the main attraction and white supremacy's favorite supervillain Saïd accusing him of being misogynistic, and opening the opportunity for “The Wonder Twins” to provide a glimpse into the history of their chemistry while addressing the serious topic of abuse present within male female dynamics. On despair and hope in Tolkien.
Conventional wisdom says that a strong economy helps incumbents, while a weak economy hurts them. But new research from University of Chicago economist Lubos Pastor titled “Political Cycles and Stock Returns” challenges this idea, suggesting that economic downturns actually push voters toward Democrats, while economic booms favor Republicans. If true, this theory could explain decades of presidential elections—and even the stock market's historic tendency to perform better under Democratic administrations. But does the data back it up?

Today we're talking about Trump's Inauguration Day, and while we're finally heading in the right direction, let's not pretend like everything is perfect. We've got some serious issues to address. Why is Trump still supporting the H-1B visa program that undercuts American jobs? Why didn't he put his hand on the Bible while being sworn in? And why is he backing these creepy AI-driven mRNA vaccines? If we're truly going to fix this country, then we need to face these problems head-on, not ignore them. That's what cowards do.—https://policecoffee.com/

Daniel Ziblatt is an American political scientist, Eaton Professor of the Science of Government at Harvard University, and the co-author (with Steven Levitsky) of several bestselling books, including How Democracies Die and Tyranny of the Minority. Ziblatt writes from the position that what defines strong democracies is free and fair competition for power, inclusive participation, and a package of civil liberties that make those first two conditions possible.2024 saw voters in more than 60 countries go to the polls—and deliver difficult outcomes for incumbents and traditional political parties. This week, Ziblatt joins Bethany and Luigi to discuss the fate of democracy after 2024. They explore how big money and corporate power have destabilized democracies worldwide by interfering with the conditions for free and fair competition for power. The consequence has been the movement of voters toward political extremes, which in turn can often threaten economic growth, civil liberties, and the rule of law. Nevertheless, should we judge the strength of democracy by process or outcome? Does democracy still thrive when the people vote for undemocratic politicians and parties?Together, Ziblatt and our co-hosts discuss how to curb global democratic decline by realigning government away from the interests of corporations or big money and back to those of the people.Episode Notes:Revisit ProMarket's series seeking to understand the issues of political economy driving global populist movements during the 2024 “year of elections.”
On our last episode we had a discussion about what voters care about when electing politicians…and we mentioned a prior episode where we discussed if something as seemingly arbitrary as looks factor into voter choice. Do more attractive politicians do better? We all know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but if we're being honest we all do it on occasion anyway. Could it be that we also elect our politicians just based on how they look? Of course, there's the old idea of looking “presidential”, but how much power does that really have to sway an election? As we take some time off for the holidays, we thought it would be great to re-release that episode. We'll be back in a few weeks with brand new episodes! Thanks for listening!
Do politicians really understand what drives voters—or are they relying on flawed assumptions that could shape democracy in troubling ways?A groundbreaking new study by University of Calgary political scientist Jack Lucas, “Politicians' Theories of Voting Behavior,” reveals striking gaps between how politicians perceive voters and how voters see themselves. While politicians often hold a cynical, “democratic realist” view of voters, citizens are far more optimistic about their own behavior. But who's right—and does it even matter?
When it comes to defending democracy, are politicians or the public more committed to its principles—or are both equally willing to bend the rules for political gain?In his forthcoming book, Elitism vs. Populism, University of Texas at Dallas Political Scientist Curtis Bram challenges the idea that elites are the ultimate defenders of democracy. Through innovative experiments comparing everyday citizens with elected officials, Bram uncovers an uncomfortable truth: both groups are surprisingly similar when it comes to supporting anti-democratic policies—if it benefits their side. But what does this mean for the future of democracy? And can we trust anyone to uphold it?
