Shanique Kelly is a DJ and event producer in Vancouver, she runs Intersessions YVR, and throws her own monthly parties in Vancouver. Shanique began her DJ career by attending the first ever Intersessions workshop, a series which aims to bring light to the gender disparity in electronic music. Since this serendipitous beginning, Shanique has gone on to run the Vancouver Intersessions Workshops, and now produces her own parties, ‘Level Up’, a monthly queer rap, hip hop and r&b dance party. Shanique’s passion is in creating safe spaces for people who are part of marginalized communities, whether they are people of colour or part of the queer community. After DJing for other event producers and club owners, Shanique noticed the trend of tokenism, and was inspired to create her own event with a focus on hiring people of colour and members of the LGBTQ+ community. By curating these events thoughtfully, and purposefully, her parties have become spaces for people who don’t always feel safe or comfortable. Listen in to hear Matt and Shanique chat about dealing with imposter syndrome, how to avoid tokenism, and the importance of representation. “You are not your job title. You are a multi-faceted human” Lizzy Karp is a community activist, connector and ‘baby’ DJ. She spends her days as a Senior Manager at TELUS STORY HIVE and is committed to using story telling as a vehicle for human connection. Matt and Lizzy first connected at ‘Rain City Chronicles’, an event Lizzy cofounded after moving to Vancouver 10 years ago. She had spent alot of time around the music and comedy scenes in Toronto, and had come to realize that she often found people in the audience to be more compelling than the characters on stage. So, in a new city where she knew no one, Lizzy decided to create an experience where everyday people could have the opportunity to share their stories. The goal was to create live story-telling nights that were accessible, inclusive and fun-spirited. “We are all content creators. So that gives us the opportunity to practice visibility. How can we own our story and tell it for people who are watching us, for the people who are listening to this conversation, for the people who need to hear it. That really excites me. On the other hand, when does it become too much? When are we commodifying our own story?” Lizzy reflects with Matt about how people are becoming more critical about who is telling what story, and the importance of reflecting on whose voice isn’t getting heard? And who is getting asked to tell the same story over and over again? Lizzy also helps to produce an annual event called ‘Loaded Bow’ in Palm Springs. ‘Loaded Bow’ is a gathering for self-identified women to come together to learn and to meet one another in a space that is designed for people to truly connect over conversation. It acts as an opportunity for entrepreneurial-spirited women to fill up their soul-points for the rest of the year in an inclusive environment. The program is peer-lead, and removes the conventional hierarchy usually present between speaker and audience, emphasizing the reality that we all have a story to tell and experiences that others can learn from. Chippy Nonstop truly embodies her alias. A curator, radio host, community organizer, DJ, performer, content creator and more. Born in the Middle East and then finding herself travelling around the world due to her father’s job, she ended up in Oakland, California where she spent her formative years. A widely publicized deportation ordeal would lead her to Toronto where she joined a creative community hungry for new. In our conversation we chat about her journey to present, the art of DJing, building community and her DJ workshop series, Intersessions.

In this episode, I introduce the show as In the Mix with Mixel - the name of the show before I changed it to She Creates. This was the very first episode I recorded and I interviewed LA based, DJ Helikonia and DJ Funky Caramelo. They both share stories about their upbringings and how those have shaped who they are becoming today. Helikonia talks to us about how she balances her corporate job in change management while running Intersessions in LA - an organization that sets up workshop series with artist run seminars aimed to address the significant gender and sexuality based imbalance within the music industry. They offer DJ and sound focused workshops for women, and those within the LGBTQ+ spectrum. Funky Caramelo talks to us about how she chose to take a leap and search for a full-time opportunity in the music industry after living a full life as a social justice advocate within immigrant rights. She shares how she feels that she too, has the right to pursue her dream. Both women are full of life, love, optimism, and chingona determination. Listen to Helikonia's music here. In this week’s episode, we speak with musicians and artists who are challenging racism/transphobia/homophobia/sexism/ableism/et al. in their communities. They’re fighting for safer spaces and creating their own to give voice and platform to QTBIPOC musicians and artists. We speak with documentary filmmaker Hana Jama of Ottawa’s Babely Shades collective about challenging racism in the music scene, backlash and support from the community, and working with promoters to get more women and femmes of colour at shows--as well as on stage. The Khyber Centre for the Arts Artistic Director Hannah Guinan joins us in the studio to discuss the work she’s doing with South House and Avalon to make the Halifax centre a safer space--which includes a comprehensive sexual assault policy and mandate and an upcoming town hall for community feedback on March 7. Co-host Shaya Ishaq talks about DJing as self-care and shares her experience at Intersessions, an “Inclusive Sound Initiative” that provides safe spaces for women, femme, non-binary and queer folks to learn from talented women and femme DJs and performers. Blank Canvas--a contemporary art space in Toronto, particularly meant for black and diaspora artists--is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 25th to raise money for their new space. The gallery opened in 2016, and on New Year’s Eve, it was hosting an event which welcomed a range of artists, including queer and POC youth. During the event, a police check for a special permit to serve liquor in the space became violent. Police tasered Black Canvas’ co-owner John Samuels, and a few days later, the gallery’s locks were changed without any notice. Hana Jama and Shaya talk about how it has impacted the arts community in Toronto and especially BIPOC artists.
