Inside the Nail-biting Quest to Find the 'Loneliest Whale'

Science Talk

It’s a tale of sound; the song of a solitary whale that vocalizes at a unique frequency, 52 Hertz, that no other whale—as the story goes—can seemingly understand.  It’s also a tale about science, and ocean life, laced with fantasy, mystery and mostly shrouded in darkness.  The whale, of unknown species and nicknamed ‘52’, was originally discovered in 1989 and has been intermittently tracked by scientists ever since. Its solitary nature baffled marine researchers. And its very existence captured the attention and hearts of millions of people.  But as 52 roams the ocean’s depths, a lot about its nature is still up in the air.  No one has ever seen it in the flesh.  Scientists have determined that it’s a male, large, possibly a hybrid, and speculated that its unique song—too low in frequency for humans, too high for whales—might be a result of a malformation.  Scientific American sat down with Josh Zeman, an award-winning filmmaker who created a documentary about 52, to talk not just about his impressive cinematic quest (and it is impressive and beautifully shot) but also the science and academic collaborations that fueled it. The documentary—written and directed by Zeman and executive produced by actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Adrian Grenier—is inspired by the findings of the late bioacoustics scientist William Watkins. It’s propelled by passion and curiosity, and relies on underwater acoustics to track 52 through the sound-rich and noise-heavy environment of the ocean.  A departure for Zeman in terms of genre choice, the film still exudes an air of mystery and sleuthing reminiscent of whodunits, and unfolds like a classic true-crime story, which Zeman, an investigative reporter, and a true-crime documentarian, is originally famous for.  Then again, when Zeman started making the movie, the whale was MIA and has been silent for years. In essence, Zeman re-opened a cold case to—in his own words—“set the record straight” and “bring the audience into the world of the whale.” With the help of marine scientists, he followed streams of whale songs, and other breadcrumbs in the form of auditory clues, listening in, analyzing, tracking, slowly and persistently narrowing down the circle around 52. He found him, lost him, found him again until eventually, he made an unexpected revelation about him.  It may not be the closure Zeman expected to give to his audiences. But it’s definitely a fresh chapter in this evolving tale.  Zeman says he is hopeful that other storytellers will take up the mantle and continue to unearth more facts about 52.  “What a more beautiful gift can you give than to say, ‘actually, there's another chapter.’ And then 20 years later, somebody else comes in and adds their chapter,” he says. “That’s what storytelling is.”

I first experienced the actor Adrian Grenier, like many of us did, as the charismatic boy prince Vincent Chase on the show Entourage. We met in person at a masculinity talk at Burning Man as a man going through a profound spiritual journey, which is the subject of today’s podcast. On the show we look at Adrian’s life through an archetypal lens from the puer aeternus (the boy who won’t grow up) to the four mature masculine archetypes outlined in the book King, Warrior, Magician, Lover. We discuss his time on the set of Entourage and how life imitates art. Adrian explains his own trail of ashes, the portal to growing up, and some of the specific tools, like embodiment, that Adrian used to catalyze his growth. Finally we discuss his new community project outside of Austin, Texas named Kintsugi after the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with gold. Adrian is an actor, director, producer, musician, environmentalist and now, a rancher. He is best known for his starring role in the HBO series Entourage and has appeared in films such as Drive Me Crazy and The Devil Wears Prada. He serves as a United Nations Environment Goodwill Ambassador. A Note: Discussions of gender are incredibly nuanced, especially now. There is no one size fits all way of looking at gender polarities in ourselves and our culture. Neither Adrian or I are gender theorists and so we endeavor to share our own experiences. Whether you identify as a man or woman or any other beautiful constellation of gender identity, I hope you find something in today’s episode that gives you greater insight in how to expand the width of your own being. What do you think of when you hear “stock trading”? For most of us in 2020, we thought of YOLO Calls, Tesla Bulls, Robinhood, Wall Street Bets, and Day Trading. The 2006 smash hit "The Devil Wears Prada" seemed to have struck a chord on the piano that is the hearts of moviegoers everywhere, but to us, with its weighty pile of missed notes, it instead felt like ton of ivory falling on our heads.  Based on the chick-lit novel of the same name, it tells the fish-out-of-water story of a plucky young wannabe journalist who decides to take a demanding job for heavy hitter in the alien-to-her fashion industry of New York City.  That boss is named Miranda Priestly (played by Meryl Streep in an Oscar-nominated performance) and is clearly based on famous longtime Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. She’s mean to everyone, but her husband leaves her, so we’re supposed to feel bad for her I guess. Not sure why.  Anne Hathaway plays Andrea "Andy" Sachs, a recent Northwestern grad who is just trying to break into the journalism biz by, ya know, not writing anything and instead becoming some evil weirdo’s personal assistant. Because that’s how that works.  In a career-igniting role, Emily Blunt plays Miranda Priestly’s co-assistant Emily Charlton who is an enemy of Andy’s and treats her like garbage the whole time, but we’re somehow supposed to feel bad for her, too. Also not sure why.  Stanley Tucci plays the magazine’s art director Nigel Kipling, who becomes the Fairy Godmother to Hathaway’s Cinderella. That’s when he’s not constantly calling her fat and making her cry because she doesn’t think high fashion is the most important thing in the entire world.  And of course, then there’s Andy’s awful, pretentious, annoying and whiny chef of a boyfriend—played by Adrian Grenier of “Entourage” fame, who has proven how fictional that show was, because this dude is a horrible film actor that the likes of Scorsese would never cast. Join us as we try to figure out how women's clothes sizes work, discuss the dirty world of emu magazines, and try to get to the bottom of whether Madonna can actually sing or not.  Tell us what you think by chatting with us (@filmsnuff) on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, or by shooting us an email over at mailbag@filmsnuff.com. I got curious about my new medium and before I knew it, I was digging deep in research and how it affects the environment. It led me to want to connect more with nature and it was not long after that I found myself at the top of Kilimanjaro admiring nature from above that I decided to quit my corporate life and like they say, the rest was history. In 2018 I decided to take the trash to the streets of the UAE and wore all the trash I generated. 30 days and 65 kg of waste later I had the country buzzing with questions about waste and wanting to know how they can reduce it. This was the start of my podcast, Mama Earth Talk. Where I tried to answer questions and to also talk with experts in the field to learn along with my audience aka the crazy birds.
