Tysen Knight is Pop Urban Artist. He is most popularly known for his street art based on Buddha's teachings and pop art sense. Tysen is inspired by the works of famous street artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. His art style also reflects the styles of Fine Artist Pablo Picasso and Pop Artist Andy Warhol. Tysen was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and grew up in New Jersey, where he finished high school. He decided to skip the idea of going to college and obtained his barbers' license instead and worked with some of the region's top athletes. He moved to California to pursue his passion in the arts and currently resides in the Palm Springs,California. As a teenager, Tysen communicated his artwork through graffiti on walls and vacant buildings. He was hugely inspired by Andy Warhol. From an early age, Knight got hands-on drawing cartoons and airbrushing them on jeans for $25. He also created business logos. Tysen's documentary, The Art Of Hustle: Street Art Documentary, was a success that motivated him to become a regular gallery contributor, from being a street artist. It won the ''Best Feature Film" Award 2018 at the Oregon Documentary Film Festival. The production of the documentary, The Art Of Hustle, began in October 2016. Tysen worked sixty hours a week at a barbershop, and when he got days off on Sundays and Mondays, he filmed the documentary for nine months straight. Knight directed the documentary to deliver the inspirational story about all the endeavors and dedication required to achieve goals and dreams and also shed a positive light on street art and graffiti. Knight was responsible for a project, "Street Bench Art Pilot" conceived by the Palm Springs Public Arts Commission, the City Council Downtown Subcommittee, and Main Street Palm Springs, which involved decorating the benches throughout downtown Palm Springs. He created a series of benches with the theme, "Urban Desert Palms and Icons" on Palm Canyon Drive between Arenas Road and Museum Way. The icons included Garland, Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Frida Kahlo, and Lucille Ball. Knight launched his latest collection of paintings and drawings on October 23, 2019, at www.RobertJamesGallery.com. The works are part of his new Masterpiece Mash-Up Series where he re-imagines paintings from artists such as Pablo Picasso, Leonardo DaVinci, and Grant Wood. The collection debuted in NYC (Time Square) in the last quarter of 2019. Knight has worked with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity to build homes for the less fortunate. He has also been involved in activities like preparing meals alongside Midnight Mission for the homeless and mentoring young ‘troubled' kids to pursue arts at no cost. Knight partnered with The Palm Springs Unified School District and the BAM (Boys Art Mentorship) program in California and utilized his brand of street art to inspire and mentor at-risk youth. During this mentorship program, Tysen engaged students with an interactive program and taught them how to express themselves artistically, which has in return seen the drop-out rate of men of color in these programs reduced. Tysen Knight won the award for the category, Best Feature Film, at Oregon Documentary Film Festival, in 2018, for his documentary, The Art Of Hustle: Street Art Documentary. He also won the ''Best Director'' Award 2019 at the Marina Del Rey Film Festival for his second film The Art Of Hustle: Homeless Street Artist Documentary. Tysen also won the artist “Spotlight” award at Red Dot Miami (Art Basel Weekend) Tysen is also Artist Educator-in- Residence for the Palm Springs Art Museum: Jan 23- I February 9, 2020 (Sheffer/Scheffler Arts Education Space). We are grateful to have him as a guest on Black Canvas

The trio dive into Kaye's shamanic journey, the age of trauma we live in at the moment, her new film Black Canvas, Cannes Film Festival and the mostly forgotten brush fires in Australia that preceded a little thing everyone might remember called the Pandemic? Matthew Stewart is a country singer and songwriter originally from Lebanon, a small town in southern Missouri. Matt Stewart has released a string of singles that provide the blueprint for what's to come from this young artist. From an early age, Matt became enthralled with music. Whether listening to country radio in the car with his family, or growing up in the “playlist generation”- this artist fostered an appreciation for music of many genres. This passion for music would eventually shape the creation of country roots and songwriting blended with alternative and pop-punk influences. Before heading off to university, Matt was given his first real guitar as a gift from his parents. While teaching himself to play a few fundamental chords, he quickly discovered a passion for songwriting. Matt is looking to pursue this passion for music further, and get his career back on track post-pandemic. His recent new record, “You Miss 100% Of The Shots You Don't Drink” was released in September of this year and we are grateful to have Mr. Matt Stewart on Black Canvas.

Surviving years of toxic relationships, addiction, abuse and mental health struggles is enough to force one into refuge. Fortunately for Doc Fischbach, he found solace among the scenic mountains near Denver, Colorado, but also in the pursuit of making music. Doc's relationship with nature sits parallel to his love of music, with both of these outlets being places where he can discover unblemished happiness. Upon some soul searching and personal discovery, he eventually found his voice and subsequently his life's purpose. Dubbing his songs as “self-help” music, Doc seeks to offer a voice to the voiceless. Through his captivating brand of Pop, he sets off to offer the notion that perfection lies in our imperfections. Notably, Doc Fischbach does not use gendered pronouns in his music. As a gay man, he knows too well how it feels to be marginalized and would never wish for any of his fans to feel excluded. His lifelong relationship with ADHD and mental health, alongside his past troubles have made Doc feel invisible at times. However, with music making him feel more seen than ever, he is now on a mission to let anyone else that is struggling know that there is still light even in the bleakest of times. Doc has since amassed a large back catalogue of unreleased original material, as well as a handful of singles he has self-released in 2020 and 2021. Fans can expect more of Doc's emotionally charged music to arrive next year and we are grateful to have him as a guest on “Black Canvas.”
On this episode we got to talk about a sneaker ICON. RIP Peter Moore
Puerto Rican native Joelle is an up and coming R&B/Pop artist to look out for. Currently working on his full length Album in Los Angeles, California, Joelle is no stranger to music. With an EP 'About You' already out that tackles hard subjects such as heartbreak and addiction, there is no place he isn't willing to go to tell his story and help people get through life with his gift of music. We are so grateful to have him as a guest on “Black Canvas.”
On today's episode of “Black Canvas,” I was honored to have the incomparable and multi-talented superstar, Jesse Pattison. He is truly a professional with winning strategies and first-hand knowledge of the TV, film, and production industries which he truly excels in. The sky is the limit for Jesse and we are truly grateful to be a small part of his journey!
I am truly honored to have Cecil Thornton as a guest on “Black Canvas.” He shares his journey in becoming a Light Worker, Energy Healer, Spiritualist, and a Highly Effective Educator. With his many years of defying odds, he takes us on a journey to finding what inner peace means for our own lives. I am grateful to have shared my space with his and I hope you have the opportunity to discover what spirituality means to you.
Laura starts dance lessons and Todd tries to understand sports before talking to the multi-talented broadway performer from Rock of Ages and all around kind human, Regina LeVert. Regina talks to Laura and Todd about what it was like being born with 6 fingers, being a part of a musical family with relatives like Eddie LeVert of the “O'Jays” and Gerald LeVert of “LeVert,” and her experience with Muscle Tension Dysphonia, a condition caused by stress that quite literally took her voice. The trio also dives deep in to what it was like for Regina growing up in America as a black woman, racism on different coasts, code-switching, being white adjacent, the Will Smith “incident” and what it means when people say “to privileged people, equality feels like oppression.” Regina's latest work, Black Canvas, will be available to the public soon (we'll keep you posted!) and her yet to be titled book containing interviews with broadway and theater legends will be released within the year. Regina's WebsiteRegina's Social:FacebookInstagramRock of Ages Review:“Notably, Regina LeVert has such a commanding presence as Justice that when she comes on in Act II, she is instantaneously a crowd favorite. LeVert further has the audience in the palm of her hand with a contemporary version of Journey's “Any Way You Want It,” which puts the spotlight on Justice's agile pole dancers”About Regina: She was such a shy kid that it wasn't until college, that she discovered her love for the arts. Shortly after passing Acting 101 for Non Majors, Regina started a journey that has gifted her with seeing most of the world. While singing and dancing in many tours and productions in Europe, Asia, Australia and the United States, Regina became a certified scuba diver, zip-lined in the Costa Rican rainforest, sung in the Sydney Opera House, eaten scorpion in Singapore, kayaked with a school of dolphins and cage dived with sharks in Hawaii, and shot grade 4 rapids in New Zealand! Regina's love of singing is in her blood…she is proud to count the late Gerald LeVert of the R&B group LeVert, and his father Eddie LeVert of the Grammy Hall of Fame R&B group, the O'Jays, as family who have inspired her. Next up: trying to hit a lay up like her Cleveland Cavalier cousin Caris LeVert! Ha! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
LEAD HOST: Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III GUEST: Josh Larsen We know Jesus is a person of color, but Jesus is seen as white because it is Hollywood that holds the key to our imagination, and that imagination remains colonized. Justice cannot be confined to paper or a protest, it requires that we use our imagination to the fullest through dance, poetry, clay, paint—and film—and that's where director Barry Jenkins is upending Hollywood with his Black canvas. The FOUR explore the imagery and spirituality of Jenkins' filmmaking with Josh Larsen, co-host of NPR's Filmspotting, called the no. 1 podcast for the movie buff by The New York Times. Larsen is the author of Movies Are Prayers, and editor/producer for Think Christian, a website and podcast exploring faith and pop culture. You can follow Josh @larsenonfilm. And a film lover's bonus: The FOUR's very own Otis Moss III produces beautiful, captivating and poignant “sermonic films” at Unashamed Media. And while you're here, be sure to enjoy his unique “meditative story” at America's Jam Session.
Jim Piddock is an actor, writer, and producer, who began his career on the stage in England, before emigrating to the U.S. in his early twenties. He made his theatrical debut in the U.S. in “The Boy's Own Story”, a one-man show about a soccer goalkeeper, at the Julian Theatre in San Francisco. The show was an instant success with critics and audiences, winning Jim the Bay Area Critics' Best Actor Award. The show was then produced Off-Broadway and he quickly gained the attention of the New York theatre scene. That same year (1982), he was cast in Noel Coward's “Present Laughter” by George C. Scott, who directed/starred in the revival, which also featured Nathan Lane, Christine Lahti, Dana Ivey, and Kate Burton. The show was a big hit on Broadway and Piddock soon found himself appearing in a string of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, including the original US production of “Noises Off”, “The Knack” at the Roundabout Theatre, and “Make and Break” with Peter Falk at the Kennedy Center. After replacing Frank Langella in “Design For Living” at the Circle-In-The-Square theatre, he moved to Los Angeles and has since appeared in a long succession of tv shows, such as “The Tracey Ullman Show”, “Coach”, “Max Headroom”, “The Twilight Zone”, “Murder She Wrote”, “Mad About You”, “Angel”, “ER”, “Friends”, “Crossing Jordan”, “The Drew Carey Show”, “Lost”, “Monk”, “Without A Trace”, “Dollhouse”, “Party Down”, “Law And Order: LA”, “Castle”, “Two And A Half Men”, “Children's Hospital”, “Mom”, “The Royals”, and “The Grinder”. He has also starred in several notable tv movies and mini-series, like “From The Earth To The Moon”, “A Mom For Christmas”, “She Creature” on HBO, and “The Women Of Windsor”. He appeared in his first movie in the top-grossing film of 1989, “Lethal Weapon 2”, in which one of his lines, “But…you're black” in answer to Danny Glover's request to emigrate to South Africa, became a catchphrase for the film. Other feature film roles soon followed, including notable appearances in “Independence Day”, “Traces Of Red”, “Multiplicity”, “Burn Hollywood Burn”, “Austin Powers 3”, “A Different Loyalty”, “Love For Rent”, “See This Movie”, “Love For Rent”, “The Prestige”, “Epic Movie”, “Who's Your Caddy?”, “The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising”, “Meet The Spartans”, Woody Allen's “You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger”, “Get Him To The Greek”, “The Cold Light Of Day”, “The Five Year Engagement”, “1915”, “Think Like A Man Too”, and “Kill Your Friends”. But it is probably his diverse performances in the improvised Christopher Guest comedies “Best In Show” (as the Dog Show commentator with Fred Willard), “A Mighty Wind”, and “For Your Consideration” that he has gained the most attention as a chameleon-like character actor, barely recognizable from role to role. As a voice actor, he is most notable for providing the voice of Major Zero in the English version of the massively popular video game “Metal Gear Solid 3”, Bolero the Bull in the movie “Garfield 2”, and the fictional artistic director of Forever Young Films, Kenneth Loring, doing a hilarious commentary in the directors' cut of the Coen Brothers' “Blood Simple”. His voice work in animated tv series and in video games is extensive and includes “The Lion King”, “Extreme Ghostbusters”, “The New Batman Adventures”, “C-12: Final Resistance”, “Return To Castle Wolfenstein”, “The Lord Of The Rings”, “101 Dalmatians 2”, “The Bard's Tale”, “Dead Space: Downfall”, “Ben 10: Ultimate Alien”, Alfred in “Batman: Under The Red Hood”, “Batman: The Brave And The Bold”, “Skylanders: SWAP Force”, “Turbo FAST”, and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. He currently released his best-selling book, “Caught With My Pants Down and Other Tales From A Life in Hollywood.” We are so grateful to have him as a guest on, “Black Canvas.”

Stevie Howie played music since he was a young kid, picking up piano when he was about 5 or 6 years old. He didn't necessarily think that I had a particularly "special" connection to music primarily because he thought that understanding music as a fundamentally powerful, immutable force of the universe was just a fact. Stevie couldn't imagine not seeing that. It wasn't until he knew that other people didn't quite see things the same way that he did that Stevie began to see my love for music as "special". Mr. Howie continued playing music, picking up guitar when he was about 9 years old. He spent countless hours in my room playing along to Green Day and Paramore videos on YouTube, imagining that he was in the music videos in their places. This all lasted for a while, until the end of middle school, when the desire to be "cool" trumped my desire to pursue music. So he put down the guitar and piano for a few years until his junior year of high school. Stevie started listening to lots of blues music, mainly the three kings (Albert King, BB King, and Freddie King), Stevie Ray Vaughan, and John Mayer, as well as a lot of Fleetwood Mac. Soon he started playing music constantly. Stevie was obsessed with guitars and everything about them, and probably watched every single live performance of "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" that has ever been played. Stevie graduated from high school to go to The University of Alabama, where his white Fender Strat was the one constant thing in a life full of changes, drama, and lot of emotional desperation. Then, he discovered music production near the end of my freshman year of college. Once that happened, it was all over. Stevie was heartbroken and had nowhere else to put all of my emotion, so he fully dove into creating songs through the beginning of my sophomore year of college. In fact, he spent so much of his time making music that he almost lost his scholarship. He had locked himself in his room making music for so long, had skipped so many classes, and had spent so little time and effort on his classes that he was literally failing to meet the bare minimum. But something was off. Stevie was desperately missing something. It took him some time to realize, but he needed to pursue music. Stevie loved engineering things, but music existed on a different plane. Therefore, in May of 2021, one semester before college graduation, Stevie decided to change the entire plan. He was going to pursue music. At all costs. He was set to finish a work co-op over the summer and his final semester of school over the fall, but he wanted to move to Los Angeles and start his music career as soon as possible, so Stevie made some calls with the computer science department at Alabama to allow him to complete his final semester online, and moved to LA in August. Fast forward to today, Mr. Howie is a TikTok Sensation and just released his first single, “Shakes.” I am honored to have him as a guest on “Black Canvas.”
He is also called “Big Country.” Michael is from a little town called Sandy, Oregon. He had a dream to become a vocalist growing up and he is making that dream become reality. The summer and fall festival seasons bring a flurry of buzzy premieres at glamorous locales: Cannes, Venice, New York, Toronto. But as most film critics will attest, some of our best festival experiences are at the smaller venues and events that often fly under the radar. These include regional festivals that cater to local audiences, festivals that spotlight newer filmmakers, and lineups focused on specialized programs. To discuss the role of these festivals and some selections from recent editions, Film Comment editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute sat down with one of Film Comment's most trusted festival correspondents—curator and critic Jordan Cronk. Jordan talked about some of his favorite small festivals, including Black Canvas, RIDM, and True/False, and discusses the prize-winners from the recent edition of FIDMarseille, including Outside Noise and Haruhara San's Recorder. They also discuss picks from an upcoming archival film festival organized by Arsenal Berlin, and some of Jordan's personal highlights from Locarno.

My guest this week is Derrick Williams aka Black Canvas. Derrick and I have been friends for awhile and have seen each other venture into different avenues within the music scene, from me booking shows and doing this podcast to Derrick getting into taking the time to become an MC, and how his life experiences have shaped his art over the years. We get into some discussions about the politics of Grand Rapids, as well as some conversations about our current social issues, and how Derrick conveys these thoughts into his music. We also go through the evolution of Derricks rap personas and what they meant on the way to becoming Black Canvas and much more. Had a lot of fun having a chat with an old friend. Hope you enjoy. In this week’s episode, we speak with musicians and artists who are challenging racism/transphobia/homophobia/sexism/ableism/et al. in their communities. They’re fighting for safer spaces and creating their own to give voice and platform to QTBIPOC musicians and artists. We speak with documentary filmmaker Hana Jama of Ottawa’s Babely Shades collective about challenging racism in the music scene, backlash and support from the community, and working with promoters to get more women and femmes of colour at shows--as well as on stage. The Khyber Centre for the Arts Artistic Director Hannah Guinan joins us in the studio to discuss the work she’s doing with South House and Avalon to make the Halifax centre a safer space--which includes a comprehensive sexual assault policy and mandate and an upcoming town hall for community feedback on March 7. Co-host Shaya Ishaq talks about DJing as self-care and shares her experience at Intersessions, an “Inclusive Sound Initiative” that provides safe spaces for women, femme, non-binary and queer folks to learn from talented women and femme DJs and performers. Blank Canvas--a contemporary art space in Toronto, particularly meant for black and diaspora artists--is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 25th to raise money for their new space. The gallery opened in 2016, and on New Year’s Eve, it was hosting an event which welcomed a range of artists, including queer and POC youth. During the event, a police check for a special permit to serve liquor in the space became violent. Police tasered Black Canvas’ co-owner John Samuels, and a few days later, the gallery’s locks were changed without any notice. Hana Jama and Shaya talk about how it has impacted the arts community in Toronto and especially BIPOC artists.
