December 22nd: David Katz Born (1993) Video games are supposed to be a fun way to unwind and entertain. Not something that feels like life or death. On December 22nd 1993 a young man was born who would, it seemed, take out his anger over losing a gaming tournament on his fellow competitors. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacksonville_Landing_shooting, https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/27/us/jacksonville-madden-tournament-suspect/index.html, https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/28/us/jacksonville-madden-shooter-katz-mental-health-invs/index.html, https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/2019/08/25/did-grudge-push-gunman-in-jacksonville-landing-mass-shooting/4383323007/, https://www.washingtonpost.com/video-games/esports/2019/09/19/madden-tournament-shooting-survivor-tried-move-then-he-found-partial-bullet-his-leg/, https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/08/27/jacksonville-shooting-fbi-atf-searches-baltimore-home/1108711002/, https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/david-katz-jacksonville-shooting-latest-updates-news-neighbours-speak-a8509651.html Learn more about your ad choices. The world of Esports (“Electronic Sports”) has become one of the fastest growing communities of our lifetime. Professional video game tournaments clock in over 500 million views from the biggest competitions on streaming platforms such as YouTube and Twitch. But what happens when something goes wrong at one of these events and the whole world is watching, live? No one could have anticipated the horrors that would unfold mid-day, at an unsuspecting video game bar in Jacksonville, Florida. Yet, in a world that demands instant internet gratification, fastest upload speeds, and 4K game play... perhaps we should be careful what we wish for. We often overlook the isolated environment in which gamers subject themselves to. It’s easy to miss very real mental-health warning signs when enthralled and caught up in the realm “virtual reality.” When we fail to recognize these signals, how do the repercussions of one man’s actions affect our safety? When gunshots rang out over the livestream on August 26, 2018 - broadcasting live to hundreds of viewers during a professional Madden tournament, everyone ran for their lives. This is a deep dive into the mind of one desperate gamer, lost in his delusions. David Katz was willing to do anything it took to prove he was the best- even if that meant taking the lives of innocent people to get there. This week on VG Pulse, we have a strangely somber and rant-heavy show all at the same time! Wee start out with side notes of work, before diving into the regular news where we discuss Spyro: Reignited Trilogy being delayed until November, Bethesda putting more pressure on Sony over cross-platform play, the sad passing of Unsho Ishizuka (voice of Professor Oak in the Japanese Pokemon series, as well as the voice of several other anime characters), and of course we have a lengthy discussion about the horrible tragedy that took place in Jacksonville on August 26th. After the news, we dive into the forums, and then finish off with talk … Continue reading VG Pulse 311: Jacksonville Landing →
Welcome back Save Roommates, good to see you again. This week's episode covers a lot of hot hot games coming out! Streets of Rage 4. Resident Evil 2. Cyberpunk 2077. Life is Strange 2. DMC 5! SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE!! We're losing our heads over all of these promising titles and crying for how bad our wallets are going to be punished. We couldn't be more excited though. Additionally, to open this week's episode Kevin and Daniel wanted to first address the shooting at the GLHF Game Bar in Jacksonville Landing over the weekend that took the lives of Eli Clayton and Taylor Roberts and left 10 others critically injured. While we're not experts on the topic and you can take or leave our opinions, this is something that took place amongst our community in our home state. We didn't have too many details at the time of recording, but we wanted to talk about the issue, share our thoughts, and remember and pay respect to the two lost who loved video games as much as we do. If you want to help, you can donate to the victims and their families over at http://www.gofundme.com/rip-true-and-spot OR you can donate blood at any hospital whether locally in Jacksonville or elsewhere. As always, thanks for listening and being the best of Save Roommates. ------------------------------------------ --Cuts-- 0:00:00: Addressing the Jacksonville Shooting at the GLHF Game Bar 0:09:47: Intro 0:23:12: Soft News 0:43:08: Hard News ---------------------
