On this episode of They Walk Among America… It was June 26th, 1967, and Margaret Harold and Mast. Sergt. Roy D. Hudson were parked along a lonely dirt road around 12 miles west of Annapolis, Maryland. As they chatted, a man appeared from the woodland surrounding the road and began hastily walking towards them. He was wearing what looked like work clothing, and he appeared to be irate. He hollered to the couple that they couldn't be parked there. Roy apologised, and as he went to climb back into the car, the unfamiliar man asked for a ride back to the highway. Roy told the man no, while Margaret added that there was no room for him in the car. Things then suddenly took a much more ominous turn…*** LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED *** ‘They Walk Among America' is a Law & Crime podcast network production. This episode was hosted by Nina Innsted.Researched and written by Emily G. On this episode of They Walk Among America… Dawn was just beginning to break in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, at around 5:30AM on June 25th, 1979, when a phone call was made to the police. The 911 operator picked up the phone to be met by a man's voice. He ominously commented that police could find a woman's body in a parked car at a local motel. The officers were dispatched to the parking lot of the Host Inn hotel, a large convention centre motel located around 3 miles from Pennsylvania Turnpike's Harrisburg Interchange. They approached the red 1978 Plymouth Horizon hatchback and immediately observed that the trunk was partially open. As the officers got closer, they saw a pale arm hanging out of the vehicle. They slowly opened up the trunk to reveal the naked body of a woman…*** LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED *** ‘They Walk Among America' is a Law & Crime podcast network production. This episode was hosted by Nina Innsted.Researched and written by Emily G. Our guest today knew her calling at a much younger age than most of us. A fitness enthusiast, environmentalist and outspoken animal rights activist before she was even 15, Ella Magers is today a fitness coach, an author, and the founder of Sexy Fit Vegan. She's been on a personal quest to help people change their attitudes toward food and wellness, and she has the international following to prove it. Ella was named one of the top 50 trainers in America by Shape magazine and Trainer Of The Month by bodybuilding.com. Armed with a master's degree in social work, certifications with the National Academy of Sports Medicine, extensive training in Muay Thai, and an inherent ebullience, Ella epitomizes what's possible on a plant-forward diet. And there is SO much more to Ella's story. This episode is packed with heretofore untold revelations and personal tales from her remarkable life journey! “That grief felt so different. It was maybe the worst grief of my life, and at the same time, I let myself have it. I let myself be in it. I didn't eat my way out of it. I didn't turn to food. I didn't turn to exercise. I didn't turn to any of those old unhealthy coping mechanisms. And I say unhealthy because I would have over-exercised. Anything to run: drinking or drugs or anything like that. I just sat in it. And I cried, and I cried, and I cried.” - Ella Magers What we discuss in this episode: Ella's battle with depression How she freed herself from dependence on pharmaceuticals Her experiences with DMT and how it changed her The pressures of being a fitness paragon Overcoming exercise addiction Her therapeutic experience at a spiritual retreat in Peru How she learned to cope with grief after suffering a monumental loss Resources: Ella's website: Sexy Fit Vegan Ella's Instagram: @sexyfitvegan Hogs and Kisses Farm Sanctuary: Hogs & Kisses The Plant-based Playbook IS HERE! In the late 1970s, a rural Ohio family came face-to-face--or maybe it's fur-to-fur--with the Midwest's most infamous version of Bigfoot, the Grassman. Whether you call it Orange Eyes or The Minerva Monster, the creature who allegedly lurked in Paris Township in 1978 created much unwanted attention for the unhappy objects of its attention. With childhood obesity reaching epidemic proportions, our guest today, Dr. Leigh Ettinger, aka Dr. Herbivore, is a pediatric nephrologist who has seen firsthand the benefits of a plant-based diet for children. Dr. Ettinger is board certified in General Pediatrics and received his medical degree from Tufts University. He also received his certificate in plant-based nutrition from eCornell in 2016, and in 2019 he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. He has a telemedicine practice in New York and New Jersey, where he encourages a plant-centric diet and empowers families to embrace a healthier lifestyle. With so much to unpack regarding weight management and nutrition optimization in children, it's an honor to have him here with us today so that we can pick his brain! “By having the people fill up on whole plants, then they're not hungry. They don't hopefully feel the need to eat in secret, or they're not reaching with a craving for something if they're filling up on starches. I'm a big fan of Dr. McDougall's The Starch Solution, so, potatoes and bananas especially. I had one dad call me up once, he wasn't in the visit, and he called me up a week after I'd seen his teenage boy, and he asked ‘what are you doing? Why is my son eating all these bananas? He's eating seven bananas a day.' I replied ‘oh, oh really, that's great. What's your concern?' He said ‘it just seems like a lot of bananas. What's he doing with all those bananas?' I replied ‘well, how's he doing?' He confessed, ‘well, he lost ten pounds.'” - Dr. Leigh Ettinger What we discuss in this episode: The reason he chose to become a pediatric nephrologist Why he prefers the term “herbivore” over “vegan” How he treats obesity in children The root cause of childhood obesity and why he recommends a plant-based diet The differences between being overweight and obese The risk factors that accompany obesity in children and teenagers How he guides and educates families regarding diet The benefits of telemedicine appointments Resources: Website: Doctor Herbivore Plant-based chef Rebecca Carucci: Powered by Plants Consulting Fitness expert Danielle Medina: Fitnplaymama The Plant-based Playbook IS HERE! On this episode of They Walk Among America… The 1960s brought incredible change to America. New programs to help the less fortunate access jobs, education and healthcare were introduced, and civil rights movements were gaining traction across the states. It was a decade of rebellion and hope for a better world, young people shunned war in favor of free love, and people strived for revolution. America was evolving and dividing, but one thing was sure to capture the attention of the nation; the complicated case of one man accused of two love triangle murders, in two different states…*** LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED *** ‘They Walk Among America' is a Law & Crime podcast network production. This episode was hosted by Nina Innsted.Researched and written by Eileen Macfarlane.Editing and scoring by Kory Hilpmann. Our guest today is functional medicine practitioner Dr. Peter Kozlowski, and for those who aren't familiar with functional medicine, you're in for a real treat. Dr. Koz practices getting to the root of disease rather than treating the symptoms, while also addressing mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Doesn't that make sense? Dr. Kozlowski has authored two books: Unfunc Your Gut, in which he tackles gut health and the immune system, and his new book Get the Func Out, where he addresses detoxing from heavy metals, toxic chemicals, and mold. Before writing the books, he trained with luminaries such as Dr. Susan Blum, Dr. Mark Hyman, and Dr. Deepak Chopra. But what's also intriguing is that his path to where he is was not a straight one. Dr. Koz faced some serious adversity along the way, and we're looking forward to seeing how some of those experiences influenced how he practices medicine today! “We're all born with a bucket, and we fill that bucket with sugar and bad food and stress and lead and mercury and mold and glyphosate. That bucket eventually overflows into disease. Right? And that's where most people are presenting themselves to me - when their bucket is full. And then we're trying to figure out what's in their bucket and what's filling it." - Dr. Peter Kozlowski What we discuss in this episode: His personal story and journey to functional medicine His struggles with alcohol Hormonal imbalances, menopause, and toxins The primary toxins he sees and treats An explanation of chelation and heavy metal testing The symptoms of mold toxicity and how Dr. Koz tests for it His thoughts on supplements and emphasis on diet Resources: Website: Doc-Koz Books: Unfunc Your Gut, Get the Func Out Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/doctorkoz/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doc_koz/ The Plant-based Playbook IS HERE! To talk to today's guest, you may not guess he's an extremely accomplished mixed martial artist. Modest, thoughtful, and incredibly insightful, Mac Danzig is a true maverick – a warrior poet and animal rights proponent who defies stereotypes and can wax philosophical about anything from human nature to photography, even skateboarding. A 2nd-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, he came to prominence while winning season six of the Ultimate Fighter and made his mark in the ring as a dominant grappler and proficient striker. In addition to his success in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, he appeared in the revolutionary documentary Forks Over Knives, where he discussed the benefits of a plant-based diet and how it affected his health and his career as an athlete. Today, Mac has his own MMA studio where he passes on what he's learned to a new generation, and we're really happy to have him on! “When they were telling me that I needed a gram and a half of protein per pound of body weight to two grams of protein per pound of body weight, at the same time, they would be telling me that I could only absorb 20 to 30 grams per digestion cycle. Now how long is a digestion cycle? They say it's like three to four hours, maybe five. Well, how many hours in the day do we have for me to get two grams of protein per pound of body weight if I'm walking around at 170 pounds? 170 times two. There's no way I can absorb that.” - Mac Danzig What we discuss in this episode: His childhood and how removing dairy from his diet drastically improved his health The transformative impact working at an animal sanctuary had on him The ways a vegan diet improved his athletic performance His favorite sources of protein Insight into the world of MMA His insights into training for fights His experiences with concussions How he transitioned from MMA to opening his own gym How he approaches the topic of veganism with his students Resources: Mac Danzig gym: Danzig MMA Mac Danzig photography: https://www.flickr.com/photos/california4life/ The Plant-based Playbook IS HERE! Today's guest is an example of how veganism can have a sweeping impact on your whole life. Born on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, Fit Vegan Chef Natalie Matthews began surfing professionally at the age of sixteen. But when she started experiencing hypoglycemia, extreme fatigue and severe acne from dairy consumption, Natalie and her husband George were galvanized to learn the transformational health benefits of a plant-based diet. In just one year they were both thriving and free from illness. A professional bodybuilder and graduate from the Living Light Culinary Institute in California, Natalie has published two eBooks titled Puerto Vegan Cookbook and Fit Vegan Kitchen. Super excited to discuss her many accomplishments, how a plant-based diet has transformed her life, and the myriad ways she strives to inspire others to make positive changes in their own lives! “Having some muscle tissue is gonna improve your fat loss journey. If you have a lot more muscle tissue you can eat more, it's easier to burn fat, and you're going to see some shape when you lose that fat. You know, I often get people that are like ‘oh, I lost all this weight and I really don't like how I feel or look still.' And I'm like, ‘that's because you don't have any muscle underneath.' So, people are so afraid to get in there in the weights, and I know it can be very intimidating, but, if you combine that with a good diet you can do some serious damage. It's gonna be amazing!” - Natalie Matthews What we discuss in this episode: Her dietary background and evolution. How a vegan diet improved her health, her surfing, and other remarkable benefits she and her husband experienced. How she transitioned to bodybuilding and thrived on a vegan diet. An explanation of macronutrients and Natalie's favorite protein sources. Advice on how to change your body composition. Details of her training regimen. Her favorite meal after a show. How she veganized her favorite recipes from her childhood. Her favorite snacks. In the small town of Cloudcroft, located in a mountainous region of New Mexico, rumors began to surround a seventeen-year-old girl named Sheila Simmons. It was 1981, and most 17-year-old girls were excited about watching music videos on the newly launched 24-hour music channel MTV, reading Teen magazines, dressing in the latest fashion trends, and taking over the landline to chat with each other about their day and other important things. But Sheila's reality was, tragically, much darker. Shy, ashamed, and threatened into silence, she finally admitted her secret to a school counselor after much pressure: she was pregnant. What's more, the father of her unborn child was also the baby's grandfather, 40-year-old Ronald Gene Simmons. When he learned he was being investigated by authorities, Simmons felt betrayed. In a letter discovered almost a decade later, he warned his daughter, quote, "You have destroyed me, and you have destroyed my trust in you…I will see you in Hell."Little did anyone know, things would only get worse from that moment on.Join Jen and Cam on the 5th Annual Our True Crime Podcast's 12 Nightmares Before Christmas Day 12: The Mockingbird Hill Massacre: Ronald Gene SimmonsListener Discretion by @octoberpodVHS All music is courtesy of our Executive Producer @wetalkofdreams Researched and Written by Jesse HawkeSources:Sourceshttps://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1987-12-30-mn-21766-story.html https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/ronald-gene-simmons-3731/ https://apnews.com/article/6c5ee3b239d03ca1b0302e14795ed02c https://murderpedia.org/male.S/s1/simmons-ronald-gene.htm https://truecrimefanclub.com/2019/06/05/ronald-gene-simmons/ http://www.clarkprosecutor.org/html/death/US/simmons131.htm

On April 17, 1974, a seventeen-year-old girl in Stuttgart, Germany, was visiting her boyfriend. After saying her goodbyes, she left for the train station at around 12:30 am. Along the way, a Fiat with three passengers pulled up beside her to ask for directions. These men, who were US Army soldiers, asked the girl for directions and offered her a ride home. The girl thought that the three were trustworthy. Sadly, her instincts were very quickly proved wrong. One of the men sprung a knife on her, and they drove to a remote location to sexually assault her. All three of the men raped her, and one of them took photographs during the attack. Ingrid was brought back to the car and finally dropped off at home. Ingrid, thinking on her feet, pretended that she was interested in the men, coaxing them to give her a phone number so she could get back in touch with them later. One of them fell for it and agreed, giving her his number. This man was 21-year-old Lonnie David Franklin Jr, a US army private cook stationed at the Kelley Barracks in Stuttgart. Ingrid didn't know she was not the only victim of the three men that night or that this man would go on to become one of the most prolific serial killers of all time in America.Join Jen and Cam on the 5th Annual Our True Crime Podcast's 12 Nightmares Before Christmas Day 10 The Grim Sleeper: Lonnie Franklin JrThe photos of the unidentified women suspected to be victims of Franklin are available to view at the following link: https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/grim-sleeper-serial-killer-suspects-secret-photos/9/. She's a self-starter, she's an activist, she's a multi-hyphenate. Today's guest, Jasmine Leyva, made her directing debut with the groundbreaking documentary The Invisible Vegan, which highlights her own journey with veganism while exploring the unknown history of plant-based eating directly linked to African roots. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it immediately. Vibrant, eloquent and no-nonsense, Jasmine has appeared in front of the camera, starring in commercials for such brands as American Express, Nissan, Apple and Sony, and behind the camera as associate producer of the NAACP award-winning docuseries Unsung, and producer/writer of the docuseries Being. She's also producing the forthcoming documentary – Red Alert: The Fight Against Fibroids, which tackles the hard questions around fibroids and endometriosis, which we're definitely looking forward to discussing today. “So I saw her and I was just like, wait, she has me by four decades, but I want to be like her, so I asked her what's the secret, what are you doing? And she told me she eats a lot of raw foods, she follows a plant-based diet, so that's when I was just like, oh, sign me up because I want to look good in booty shorts. But then after I did it, I got all these other benefits, and I was just like, oh, this is deeper than looking good in booty shorts.” - Jasmine Leyva What we discuss in this episode: Jasmine Leyva's upbringing and diet as a child History and misconceptions of the African American diet What inspired her transition to a vegan diet and the impact it had on her health and well-being Her inspiration for making The Invisible Vegan Her wisdom on how to spread the plant-based message The impact of diet on fibroids Her exciting upcoming projects! Day 8On March 5th, 1984, a twenty-three-year-old Orange Bowl Princess named Elizabeth “Beth” Kenyon left the parking lot of the Coral Gables High School where she worked as a special needs teacher. Beth had also been a finalist in the Miss Florida contest in 1982. She thought the pageants were a lot of fun, but her heart was with the kids she taught. She waved goodbye to the security guard on duty, and it is presumed she was headed to the gym. However, she would never make it to the gym, nor would she make it home to her apartment on Ives Dairy Road. The police did list Beth as a missing person but assured the Kenyons their daughter was fine, claiming that young women her age went away for a few days without telling their parents all the time. Beth's parents knew that their daughter was not that irresponsible. Convinced that something was wrong and unhappy with the apathetic attitude of the police, the Kenyons hired private investigators, a father-son duo named Ken Whittaker Senior and Junior. Ken Senior was an ex-FBI Chief and amazingly thorough. No clue was too small for him. Hiring them would be the most important step in this case.Join Jen and Cam on the 5th Annual Our True Crime Podcast's 12 Nightmares Before Christmas Day 8: The Snapshot Killer: Christopher WilderListener Discretion by @octoberpodVHS All music is courtesy of our Executive Producer @wetalkofdreams Researched and written by JenCopy Editor Lauretta AllenSources:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43410008-the-snapshot-killer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmBXz0Emm38https://www.aetv.com/real-crime/beauty-queen-killer-christopher-wilder-florida-playboyhttps://www.amazon.com/Christopher-Wilder-Historical-Killers-Murderers-ebook/dp/B01EZ3Z87W/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=christopher+wilder&qid=1638501577&s=books&sr=1-3https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiJovpsOP1ohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQDW9pr_KzA&t=1287shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiHK-G1QsHshttps://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1301&dat=19870426&id=QHZWAAAAIBAJ&pg=5084,7474822&hl=enhttps://www.upi.com/Archives/1984/08/15/Tina-Marie-Risico-the-teenager-who-accompanied-serial-killer/5727461390400/https://web.archive.org/web/20120421001039/http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/serial_killers/predators/wilder/index.htmlhttps://web.archive.org/web/20120227031048/http://www.lawandordnance.com/Mystery-And-A-Spree-Killer.htmlhttps://web.archive.org/web/20120220033821/http://www.chronicle-express.com/news/police_and_fire/x342383242/-Nothing-ever-happens-herehttps://web.archive.org/web/20160403145301/http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/beauty-queen-killer-takes-bloody-ride-1984-article-1.2366878http://dingeengoete.blogspot.com/2012/04/christopher-wilder-beauty-queen-killer.htmlhttps://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1817&dat=19840425&id=cDodAAAAIBAJ&pg=6904,7213272https://web.archive.org/web/20131212203006/http://www.thefreelibrary.com/A+TEEN%27S+TERRIFYING+DAYS+WITH+A+KILLER+IN+1984,+AN+L.A.-AREA+GIRL...-a0179511757https://healthpsychologyconsultancy.wordpress.com/2012/08/12/making-of-a-monster-christopher-wilder-the-beauty-queen-killer/https://www.dailybreeze.com/2021/07/19/south-bay-history-christopher-wilders-savage-crime-rampage-included-a-stop-off-in-the-south-bay/https://charleyproject.org/case/elizabeth-ann-kenyonhttps://buffalonews.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/1983-slaying-of-young-woman-may-have-been-work-of-serial-killer/article_8f92c889-687e-50fc-84fc-53cb210b162f.htmlhttps://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/mass-murderer-wilder-commits-suicide#:~:text=Christopher%20Wilder%20dies%20after%20a,state%20troopers%20to%20avoid%20capture.

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Huntington Hartford rubbed shoulders with some of the elites during his “playboy” years throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In photographs, he posed alongside Salvador Dalí and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. In the wake of his father's death in 1922, he had become one of the heirs to the estate of his grandfather, George Huntington Hartford, who headed the great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. At just 12 years old, Hartford inherited $90 million, equivalent to around $1.25 billion today. In 1942, he purchased a 160-acre estate in the picturesque Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles and named it The Pines. On the morning of July 20th, 1959, Henry Brugger and Salvador Senjas were beginning their caretaking shift at the lavish estate. As they worked outside under the sultry summer sun, a man scrambled up Sullivan Canyon, which fronted The Pines. He looked extremely dishevelled as he muttered something about an accident at the cliff ledge…*** LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED *** ‘They Walk Among America' is a Law & Crime podcast network production. This episode was hosted by Nina Innsted.Researched and written by Emily G. Ever wonder why some people who get exposed to colds or the flu get really ill while others experience mild symptoms or don't get sick at all? Fortunately, today's guest is here to provide answers to this mystery. An authority on the “microbiome,” Dr. Robynne Chutkan is here to tell us all about the remarkable flora residing in our intestines, and how feeding it the right foods can promote health, prevent disease, and even help us with our weight. Dr. Chutkan is a board-certified gastroenterologist at Georgetown Hospital, founder of the Digestive Center for Wellness, and author of the books Gutbliss, The Microbiome Solution, The Bloat Cure, and her most recent book, The Anti-Viral Gut, where she tackles the complexities of intestinal bacteria and how it relates to our immune system. She's been a featured expert on several media outlets, including The Today Show and CBS This Morning. If you're a person interested in strengthening your immune system, or you've experienced digestive troubles, or you're just human, then this episode is definitely for you! “For a vaginal birth, as the baby's head crowns, it turns posteriorly to face the tush, and it does that to swallow a mouthful of microbes, because that area between the vaginal opening and the anus, that area we call the perineum, is full of microbes. It is one of the most microbially rich parts of the body. So as the baby is coming out, it swallows a mouthful of the mother's microbes, and those important microbes become the founding species for the baby's microbiome. Babies that are born vaginally have that benefit. Babies that are born via C-section don't get that opportunity, and as a result, they're colonized with hospital-acquired Staphylococcus aureus.” - Dr. Robynne Chutkan What we discuss in this episode: What the microbiome is and how it relates to overall human health Viruses and human DNA The microbiome and immunity Important tips for expecting mothers Causes of intestinal permeability The benefits of being in nature on the microbiome Tips to improve your microbiome The effects of stress on the gut and immunity Resources: Website: Dr. Robynne Chutkan Books: Books by Robynne Chutkan Instagram: //www.instagram.com/gutbliss/?hl=en The Plant-based Playbook IS HERE! On this episode of They Walk Among America… It was a quiet morning in Deerfield, Illinois, on October 4th, 2007. Deerfield is about 26 miles from Chicago, making it the ideal commuter village for people searching for somewhere safe to raise their families. Located just a stone's throw from the centre of Deerfield lies Elm Street, a leafy neighborhood consisting of well-kept homes and condominiums. The tranquillity was shattered shortly before 8 AM, when a deafening scream echoed throughout Elm Street, followed by a loud banging sound…*** LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED *** ‘They Walk Among America' is a Law & Crime podcast network production. This episode was hosted by Nina Innsted.Researched and written by Emily G. Who says you have to be defined by a type 1 diabetes diagnosis? Who says your life can't continue to be just as rich or fulfilling? Certainly not today's guest. Lauren Plunkett is a registered dietitian, a diabetes education specialist, a fitness instructor, a dynamic national speaker, a plant-based nutrition advocate, and a shining beacon of positive energy, exemplifying how to live your best life with type 1 diabetes. And she does it all with so much empathy, a keen intellect, and a smile so radiant I swear you could see it from ten miles away. Lauren is also the author of the book Type One Determination, which I love because it's from the perspective of someone who's both a patient and an expert, offering applicable strategies to anyone suffering from type 1 diabetes. Some of our listeners might even recognize her name for her contribution to our very own Switch4Good blog. With her characteristic feistiness, wit, and verve, she's certainly someone who can teach us all a thing or two about living our very best lives. “You get used to feeling bad. I think a lot of Americans are in that situation. They don't know what it's like to feel healthy and they get used to feeling the specific way that they do. And dairy, I think, is one of the finest examples of how fast someone can go from feeling what they do on a daily basis to, ‘maybe I should knock off one of the inflammatory foods, one of the big allergens.' And when they cut back on milk, it takes a couple of days to say, ‘I feel way better.'” -Lauren Plunkett What we discuss in this episode: The type 1 diabetes symptoms she experienced as a child and how she learned to cope with her diagnosis The truth about insulin and weight gain Intermittent fasting Diabetes and plant-based nutrition The power of a fiber-rich diet The importance of exercise in how it affects diabetes Lauren Plunkett's sound advice on how to communicate effectively with doctors The benefits of not consuming cows' milk Resources: Her book: Type One Determination — Lauren Plunkett Health Website: Lauren Plunkett S4G blog article: Ditch Dairy to Better Manage Type 1 Diabetes - Switch4Good LinkedIn: Lauren Plunkett, RDN LD CDCES - Health educator, public speaker, author - LP Nutrition Consulting LLC | LinkedIn The Plant-based Playbook IS HERE! It was just a school project, or at least that's how it started. But the more Pip dug into the disappearance of a girl from her school… the more nothing made sense. The whole thing didn't make sense. She vanished and a few days later her boyfriend was found dead in the woods after sending a cryptic text. There were more questions than there were answers. Pip was in too deep and wanted answers. But the more she dug, the more questions she asked, and the more someone in town was getting very nervous. Notes started appearing in her locker, in her cabin in the woods, and even in her own home. Warning her to stop digging. Could she find the answers before it's too late? Okay, today's guest has an incredibly compelling story. He's someone who truly knows how to turn adversity into opportunity. Uber-successful serial entrepreneur, David Israel, has owned, among other things, a nightclub, a jewelry store, a chain of upscale pawnshops, and a maintenance company. But what's most interesting, is that in 2011, while enduring the most personally challenging period in his life, he founded POP! Gourmet Foods, taking the snack industry by storm and forming partnerships with globally recognized retailers, nationally and internationally. He was even featured in Oprah magazine multiple times. Then, in 2017, David had an epiphany. The following year he took his passion, and considerable experience, and created the wildly popular company GOOD PLANeT Foods, to address the burgeoning demand for people who want to eat better, healthier, environmentally friendly products. This is a guest who can probably teach us all a thing or two about making lemonade out of lemons. So get ready for a riveting tale that has all the high-stakes drama of a movie in the making. “The sentence was five and a half, but with good time I'm out in four, which I knew wouldn't be a problem. And look, it was life-changing. I mean, we all have this idea of who these people are in prison, and it's what you see on TV, and it's really not true. A lot of these guys are just victims of their environment or where they grew up and are really intelligent, smart people. I would call them entrepreneurs, they just didn't know how or didn't have the opportunity to do things the right way.” -David Israel What we discuss in this episode: How he started with nothing and created multiple successful businesses. His mindset for starting businesses. The powerful life lessons he learned in prison. How he started to POP! Gourmet Foods while he was in prison and turned it into a snack sensation. How he helps formerly incarcerated individuals. The origin and evolution of GOOD PLANET foods. His thoughts on the future of plant-based foods. His leadership style.
