It was a woman named Jonelle Cruz who found Bridegan's two-year-old daughter Bexley alone in a car seat on a dark Jacksonville Beach road, shaking and asking about her dad.Prosecutors opened Monday in a Duval County courtroom by calling the killing a targeted ambush. Mario Fernandez Saldana, a former Army drill sergeant who married Bridegan's ex-wife Shanna Gardner, is the first of three defendants to face a jury. He sat listening to the evidence without visible expression.Assistant State Attorney Christina Simak Stifler told the jury Fernandez recruited a man named Henry Tenon for the job. GPS data from a vehicle linked to Tenon showed two trips along Bridegan's exact route before the murder on February 16, 2022. A dark blue Ford F-150 with a tire in its bed was seen near the road an hour before the shooting.Stifler explained the motive: a family trust. Gardner's parents founded Stampin' Up!, a company generating hundreds of millions in annual revenue. An irrevocable trust blocked Gardner from becoming trustee while she had legal entanglements with Bridegan. As long as he was alive fighting for custody of their twins, she couldn't touch the money.After Bridegan was dead, ten thousand dollars in checks from a company funded through the trust were deposited into accounts linked to Tenon. Phone records show thirty-five calls between Fernandez and Tenon in February 2022 alone.Defense attorney James Hill pushed back. No eyewitness places Fernandez at the scene. No DNA ties him to the road. Dr. Schmidt started as a junior lifeguard and progressed through the professional lifeguard ranks at Jacksonville Beach, Florida. He currently serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine Jacksonville.He's a medical director of Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue, deputy Medical Director of University of Florida Health's Trauma one Flight program, and co-founder of Lifeguards Without Borders, a nonprofit dedicated to international drowning prevention. He's also a board member of the Surfers Medical Association and a lead instructor with Surfing Medicine International.Dr. Schmidt has over a decade of experience on the front lines of emergency care and water safety. He has also authored key drowning treatment guidelines and helped shape national and international policy and trained lifeguards, medics and physicians around the world. From academic research to ocean rescue operation, he brings a spectrum of unique experience, making him a well-respected professional at the intersection of medicine, rescue, and public health.In this episode, we explore the medical and physiological realities of drowning along with some of its core principles. So, yeah, I think I have an interesting start in Hospitality fell into actually start out on small cruise ships. Intercoastal, I'm not even sure if you knew that Samantha. Samantha Pritchard: No. New Skills. Alex Reitter: So it was definitely a interesting start. You know, uh, intercoastal cruising, seven night trips up and down the, uh, east coast after college. You know, we did trips in Maine, Chesapeake Bay, all the way down to Florida. It was, you know, amazing experience. But when you're working six to eight weeks on a boat, nonstop, you kind of look for other options. And hotel kind of was a natural fit for me. From there, I've had a chance to actually work a courtyard down the street from this Spring Hill. And then actually a little time in the Florida Keys, uh, most recently in a Marriott in Durham, North Carolina. The weather got a little cold. It snowed a couple times on us, and we said, let's get back to Florida. So excited to be here. And excited to work with Samantha. I've only been here a couple months and ready to get the ball rolling. Ryan Embree: Well, I think you're our first guest that has got their hospitality start. I've, I've heard behind the front desk I've heard bellman. I don't know if I've ever heard on a cruise, so that's very, very cool. But it's a story that resonates probably with a lot of our hotel audience, and listeners sometimes just kind of jumping from place to place. But again, people serving people, hospitality. Samantha, you've had kind of a different journey here. Talk to us a little bit about that. Samantha Pritchard: Yeah, so I started my hospitality journey in the Convention Visitor Bureau with Visit Jacksonville. It was, it was some of the best years just learning the business, being around people that have been doing it a long time. So then I left the CVB and went out as a director of sales.
