The Legacies We Leave Behind For many childhood summers, Mark Woods piled into a station wagon with his parents and two sisters and headed to America's national parks. Mark's most vivid childhood memories are set against a backdrop of mountains, woods, and fireflies in places like Redwood, Yosemite, and Grand Canyon national parks. On the eve of turning fifty and a little burned out, Mark decided to reconnect with the great outdoors. He'd spend a year visiting the national parks and write a book - thanks to a coveted fellowship from the Society of Professional Journalists. Mark had initially intended to write a book about the future of the national parks, but Lassoing the Sun grew into something more: a book about family, the parks, and the legacies we inherit and the ones we leave behind. His book, Lassoing the Sun, is about a journey that started with a sunrise in Maine, finished with a sunset in Hawaii and had a life-changing event in the middle: his mother's death. Mark Woods is the author of Lassoing the Sun: A Year in America's National Parks. He has been Metro columnist at the Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville since 2003. Before that, he spent 20 years as a sportswriter at newspapers in Florida, Kentucky, Missouri and Indiana. He covered the earthquake in Haiti, Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, political conventions, Olympics, Wimbledon, the Masters, the World Cup and 11 Super Bowls – but he says none of those assignments compare with what he did in 2012, the year that led to Lassoing the Sun. Each year, the Society of Professional Journalists awards the Eugene C. Pulliam Fellowship to one writer in America. Mark Woods, who most Jacksonville readers will recognize from his work at the Florida Times-Union, won the fellowship in 2011. His project, built around the National Park Service and celebrating its centennial in 2016, asked the question: What is the future of our parks? The coveted fellowship allowed Woods to devote the following year to his plan — explore one park a month, each symbolizing a different issue for the future, from rising seas to fading night skies. Interviewer Barbara Goodman is an International Park consultant and co-founder of the Riverfront Parks Conservancy. Barbara retired from the National Park Service in 2015 after 33 years of service; most recently as the Superintendent of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve for 18 years. During this time she provided the leadership and vision for the development of an unprecedented tri-lateral agreement between the National Park Service, Florida Park Service, and the City of Jacksonville Preservation Parks to create a seamless system of parks and to cooperate in planning, promotion, and resource protection. Barbara provides consultation assistance and guidance to Directors of National Park systems internationally in the areas of park planning and tourism in association with Global Parks and the International Conservation Caucus Foundation. She served as the Deputy Secretary, Land and Recreation at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection overseeing the Florida State Park System – which includes 175 parks, 800,000 acres, 100 miles of beaches, 7,500 miles of trails, 4,000 miles of paddling trails; and the Florida State Lands program providing oversight for 12 million acres of public lands, land sales acquisition and the Florida Forever program. We've been through this before. So many times. Is there anything left to learn, or are we just unwilling to learn it? Perhaps a recent study holds the answers. Mike Pilavachi is the latest 'celebrity Christian' whos eministry has been tainted by scandal. In Part 2 of Beer Christianity's look at our icons with cracked halos, we ask why, with all the information we have gained over decades of scandal, we never seem to be able to prevent good ministries from hiding bad behaviours or protecting bad people. One possible answer is out desire to shirk moral responsibility in favour of loyalty and obedience to a strong leader. Another is a little more complex and we examine it in a little detail in this episode. The NGO Halo Effect tracks how moral superiority, moral justification and moral naivity in the third sector can lead to good organisations doing bad things. If we apply it loosely to churches, religious movements and para-church organisations from charities to events, we start to recognise a lot of ways in which the Mike Pilavachi, Ravi Zacharias and other Christian celebrity falls from grace may have gone on for so long. As a lens for understandign the larger issue, we hear again from Matty Fearon of Mission Catalyst magazine, who shares his recommendations for avoiding future cover-ups, and we hear from Bible Society's Mark Woods on why we're unlikely to learn a damn thing. Spoilers: we kinda love kings. For some stupid reason. But we maintain it's worth the Church and the ecosystem around it tryng to get better. It would be good for our witness and good for the world. Most importantly, it could prevent further harm being done in and by our communities. Here's a link to the fascinating study, How Moral Goodness Drives Unethical Behavior: Empirical Evidence for the NGO Halo Effect that we quote at length. Jonty thinks recognising its findings and applying them to our cherished institutions could be a game changer in catching and stopping toxicity sooner. New to Beer Christianity? Welcome! There's a connected Show With Music on Spotify called New Old Music. Check it out if you like eclectic music and weird chat. It's not terribly serious. Jonty's novel, Incredulous Moshoeshoe and the Lightning Bird, is not available in all good bookshops, but if you bought it and left a review that would probably make that more likely. We don't really want to preach at you, but some people like to know what we believe. It's this: Jesus Christ is the Son of God and came to teach us a better way to be while reconciling us to God and each other in a way we could never do without Him. He also changed water into wine. Nice.

Sometimes our lives feel like everything is wrong, like everything is so hard. It can feel like we have nowhere to turn where everything's okay. In times like that, it's easy to forget that prayer is a superpower to help us feel better, think more clearly, and make progress. So, what if I told you that you could call Jesus any time you wanted to? Guess what? You can! Today, let's have a conversation about an old song, about prayer, and about the unexpected consequences of getting what we want! Jesus on the Mainline by Ry Cooder Version by The Brothers Landreth Additional music by Carl Miner Scriptures Mentioned Luke 18:35-43 35 As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord, I want to see,” he replied. 42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God. Luke 22:42 “Not my will, but thine be done.” Psalm 116:1-2 1 I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. 2 Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath! 1 Samuel 2:6-8 (NLT) 6 The Lord gives both death and life; he brings some down to the grave but raises others up. 7 The Lord makes some poor and others rich; he brings some down and lifts others up. 8 He lifts the poor from the dust and the needy from the garbage dump. He sets them among princes, placing them in seats of honor. For all the earth is the Lord's, and he has set the world in order. Learn tips and tricks that will make writer's block a thing of the past!Louie Centanni, MFA, is a lecturer at San Diego State University and has been teaching writing, rhetoric, and composition for over a decade. He is also an online writing consultant at the University of Arizona Global Campus Writing Center, and as a writer, he has published several short works and essays. When the global pandemics aren't killing everyone's social lives, he tours as a standup comedian. It's a lot easier to make bad writing good than to make no writing!Writer's Block – Does not exist – it is just an excuse for the fact we are terrified our writing doesn't sound good.Writing is like any other skill: Practice, fail, practice, fail. Do not be afraid to fail. Our society teaches that failure is the worst thing ever, and it's not. Failure is feedback. Don't take it personally; laugh at yourself.Tips:1. JUST DO IT! Start writing anything that's on your mind, even if it's bad; just get some words on the page.2. Write first, edit later (pretend like your delete key does not exist).3. Make an outline; have a plan.4. Then, ask yourself, what do I need to do in each sentence? 5. Write what you think you need to write, then show it to someone for feedback; feedback is information that will help you get on track. 6. Do not take feedback personally – this is a common theme on many of the episodes and if getting feedback is tough for you, listen to episode #18: “How to Feel Good about Feedback with Dr. Kelly Stewart” https://www.buzzsprout.com/1547113/80631657. Beware of imposter syndrome (we spoke about this on episode #9 “The Dissertation Shift with Todd Fiore” https://www.buzzsprout.com/1547113/7242724 8. Do not try to sound smart, do not attempt to “dress up” your writing. The BEST writing is CLEAR writing. 9. Follow templates if you get stuck (see the resource below).10. Turn off Facebook, your phone, email – ANYTHING that can distract you (remember those grey activities that Mark Woods talked about in episode #6: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1547113/713680611. #6 The Myth of Time Management with Mark WoodsIn this episode, I speak with Mark Woods, the author of Attack Your Day Before It Attacks You. We don't manage time. We execute activities. Stop focusing on managing time and get conscious about the types of activities you want to execute. The skills Mark teaches are skills that will help not only doctoral students but anyone working from home with others or working as part of a virtual team. Do you feel overwhelmed? Stressed? Burnt out? The biggest challenge we have today is work-life balance.Three gifts we ALL get each day:1. Time2. Personal Energy3. ChoiceSkill #1. Color your choices – Activities are never neutral; they impact your life in a positive or negative way. Before you engage in any activity, when you get interrupted, and/or when you hear a notification - Ask yourself: What color is this?Red: STOP. These are activities that require you to STOP; must be taken care of ASAP. Green: GO. Activities that are valuable and enhance your life/project. Yellow: CAUTION. This is a bit tricky and requires making a decision – these are things that likely need to be done but not right away. Does this activity add value? Does it align with my current goal(s)?Grey: NO. Time suckers; don't have high value to work or personal life. TV, cat videos, etc. Too much of a good thing is often a bad thing.Productivity Tips: Under plan your day: Most people over-plan their day (try tracking your time to see how far off you are). Pick the TOP three. Practice tracking your time; it's an eye-opener!Planned Spontaneity: Planning when you will do a “grey” activity, how long you will spend on it, and then hold yourself accountable. This will help you be MINDFUL.Turn off notifications? YES! Because each notification is an interruption and the amount of time it takes to refocus post an interruption is about 15 minutes! Not needing to refocus will give you more TIME! Use airplane mode when you are writing. Clive Hally taught art at Brynteg Comprehensive School in Bridgend, Wales for 36 years. During that time he sexually abused a great many pupils, one of whom was my friend Mark Woods who's courageous decision to go to the police lead to Hally finally being arrested at the age of 67.Mark, who is now 49, was a gifted and aspiring 15 year old artist when Hally first began abusing him , and the after effects of those traumatic experiences which went regularly on until he left school at 18 have defined his life ever since. His decision to break the silence took many painful years, and the frank and open way in which he describes his journey from the isolation that accompanies abuse to the reconnection with self, friends and family as he found his voice is profoundly moving. To me this is a very important episode - Mark's willingness to go public and share his testimony with the world is not only incredibly brave, it has the potential to inspire others to speak out against the scourge of sexual abuse that affects so many who are shamed and bullied into silence. If you know of anyone who has been through this kind of trauma, please share Mark's story with them.
