What does it mean to be a modern witch? Kris Adams, a Black Spiritualist/Mystic, is a native of North Carolina and currently resides in the DMV area. With their background in education coupled with personal and communal dream practices, Kris actively dreams of a collective reality where all bodies feel safe to not only explore their own dreaming, but also allow dream dimensions to guide them in traversing new paths toward connection, healing and growth. Supported by crystals, tarot, rope, ritual/spell work, energy healing, individual and collective dream practices, and ancestry work, Kris is furthering the legacy of their cultural dream lineage to tend sacred spaces for collective dreaming and healing. Kris is currently a student of Jade T. Perry (https://www.jadetperry.com/) and also collaboratively apprentices with Tara Burke (https://www.thewitchesmuse.com/) and Sanyu Estelle (https://www.sanyuestelle.com/) utilizing dreamwork as a container for healing (both personal and communal) and exploration through the Dreamscapes Academy. “Creativity and imagination have always been constant companions of mine,” Kris reflects. “I've always imagined a world where we can show up exactly as who we are and experience the fullness of life in a safe and expansive container. Dreamwork has offered a wonderfully unique avenue to create and explore that world within a community space.” With their ropes intertwined and their tarot cards divined, Kris looks forward to connecting with dreamers across all realms to cultivate realities that affirm us all. In Episode 1, I introduce the podcast, and start processing and trying to make sense of things that really make no sense at all. Mainly, the Academy, and "what passes for culture and thought on the North American continent." Word to But Some of Us Are Brave. I vent about the absurdity of my experiences in a PhD program, and come to the realization that the academy, nor any other white supremacist patriarchal capitalist systems could every truly validate me, what I know, or what my value is. I then shift my focus to all the spaces and practices that do affirm my knowing and inherent value. In part, the lineages of Black folk who intentionally and lovingly exchange wisdom in affirmation of our freedom. The Spirit and intentional community that has always sustained us. The indigenous practice of citing the folks who've made us possible. Love is a Verb. And as Lucille Clifton told us, "We have always loved each other, Children. Pass it on." This week's Purple & Green segment honors brilliant Black folk--many who are scholars, theorists, artists, creatives, educators, healers, storytellers, witches, root workers, organizers, seers, diviners, & community builders--whose lives and work have poured into and shaped me, affirmed what I know and how I know it, and exemplify love in practice. Sam also gives out a list of orgs to donate to in order to support the varying intersections of Black folks, orgs to become involved with if you’ve been activated to do the work, and other tips, reminders, media and resources to keep in mind today and everyday. *Note* The tittle of this episode is an episode title not to be conflated with the organization mentioned in this episode “The Movement For Black Lives” Watch on this episode Youtube: https://youtu.be/wAxlSC7C38A Here's a Google Doc With all the resources mentioned in this episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1chECCCUOLyjJ4yr7GSBwMpVt2Y1UE6JL1fwlAENiedk/edit ORGS TO SUPPORT FINANCIALLY: Donate to folks on the Ground in Minnesota fighting for justice for George Floyd Black Visions Collective Learn more: https://www.blackvisionsmn.org/ Donate: https://secure.everyaction.com/4omQDAR0oUiUagTu0EG-Ig2 Support folks on the Ground in Louisville fighting for justice for Breonna Taylor Black Lives Matter Louisville Learn More: https://blackliveslouisville.org/ and https://www.instagram.com/blmlouisville/ Donate: https://blackliveslouisville.org/stand-up-sundays/donate/ Support folks on the Ground in Tallahassee fighting for justice for Tony McDade Tallahassee Community Action Committee Learn More: https://www.facebook.com/tallycac & https://www.instagram.com/tallycac/ & https://twitter.com/tallycac Donate: https://www.paypal.me/tallycac Support the Black Trans Travel Fund: Learn More: https://www.blacktranstravelfund.com/ Donate: https://www.blacktranstravelfund.com/donate Support Black Trans Media: Learn more & Donate: https://www.facebook.com/blacktransmedia/photos/a.263133917179512/1512705758888982/?type=3&theater or https://afgj.org/donate-fsp Support The Okra Project’s Mental Health Resource for Trans Folks Learn More: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScFbCqnPzsY0pSi39i_AjsTpVZpqJ20IOlJoX37N5qOHqN6cA/viewform Donate: https://www.paypal.me/theokraproject Support Incarcerated Sex Workers: SWOP Behind Bars Learn More: https://www.swopbehindbars.org/ Donate: https://www.swopbehindbars.org/donate/ Support Incarcerated Black Mamas and Caregivers. ~We decided to re-release this episode because we couldn’t think of a better voice to lead during this time. We have chosen to mute ourselves and support #amplifymelanatedvoices through June 7th. “We have inherited a system and there's nothing we can do about it except acknowledge that and dismantle it. But if we don't acknowledge it, then we are actually maintaining [it].” ~Derrick Dawson A conversation that eloquently connects the dots between capitalism and systemic racism? Straight talk about our American way of life and the foundation of white supremacy upon which it was built? Yes, please, to both! Derrick Dawson, co-program coordinator of the Regional Organizing for Anti-Racism, aka Chicago Roar, sheds light on the myriad ways white supremacy continues to fester and flourish. Using the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as metaphor and proving ground, Derrick hits our collective compliance with his high-powered truth rays. He exposes us to the vicious strategies employed by corporations and power-brokers hell-bent on destroying our relationship to our planet, our communities, and ourselves. Once you see the light, I guarantee you won’t be able to look away. Derrick Dawson is a member of the AntiRacism Commission of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, and served as its Co-Chair for three years. He is the Training Manager at the Chicago law firm of Barack Ferrazzano Kirschbaum & Nagelberg in Chicago, and is a graduate student and teaching assistant in English Composition at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. Derrick was also a broadcaster and journalist in the United States Navy, where he served for eight years on ships in Asia and the Pacific.
