Schools have become sites of policing and surveillance that mirror the criminal legal system. To address this, we need to understand what our guest calls the “school-to-prison nexus,” the intersecting web of racist, carceral systems that criminalize our youth. We discuss the history of organizing against the school-to-prison pipeline and how the call for “Counselors Not Cops” needs an abolitionist framework to succeed. We also highlight important wins from decades-long fights like the recent vote to end the school resource office (SRO) program in Chicago Public Schools.Episode Guest:Erica Meiners is a writer, educator and organizer. Their recent books include For the Children? Protecting Innocence in a Carceral State, a co-edited anthology The Long Term: Resisting Life Sentences, Working Towards Freedom, and the co-authored *Feminist and the Sex Offender: Confronting Sexual Harm, Ending State Violence* as well as 2022's Abolition. Most importantly, Erica has collaboratively started and works alongside others in a range of ongoing mobilizations for liberation, particularly movements that involve access to free public education for all, including people during and after incarceration, and other queer abolitionist struggles. Today's History Story: Million Man March Under white supremacy, many Black men have been rewarded for fitting into its anti-Black definition of masculinity – and it's often been to our people's detriment. But there are people reimagining who the Black man is and working to decolonize and reconstruct the Black man from head to toe, inside and out - mind, body, and soul. One such person is today's guest, Phillip Agnew. Phil is a community organizer who, in 2012, co-founded the Dream Defenders in the wake of the murder of Trayvon Martin. More recently, he's co-founded Black Men Build, an organization that represents a wide group of Black people from all walks of life – organizers, artists, communicators, educators, and creatives – who have come together to grapple with issues that are challenging Black men using social, economic, political, and spiritual tools needed to evolve and power Black futures. To bring Black Men Build to your city, or learn more about the incredible work they're doing, visit www.blackmen.build. We The PeopleAbout our campaign and coalition to bring back true American libertyGUEST BIO:Ebonni Chrispin is the Director of Legislative Affairs and Community Engagement for HF Self and Healthy Housing Foundation.CJ Staples is the national organizer for Dream Defenders.Abby Langweiler is a volunteer with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.CORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[2:29] - What is We the People?Multiple causes, one unifying missionSpearheaded by AHF, We the People is a coalition of over 40 organizations covering a wide range of social justice causes — from reducing gun violence to serving marginalized communities. Together, we hope to create one, unified voice in defense of the real American dream — an America that's safe, equitable, and just for all people. We the People will culminate in a July March located in Florida.[11:56] - Fighting Against FearTurning distrust into communityAt the core of We the People is a fight against policies in Florida and elsewhere that encourage people to distrust, fear, and even physically harm each other. When any person can possess a firearm — and when hateful speech towards marginalized communities is at a fever pitch — neighbors feel they can't trust one another. We the People is about telling the establishment that there is a better way, and that individual citizens will stand together to bring it to fruition. After all, there's more that unites us than divides us.[17:28] - Keeping Hope through HeartacheDespite setbacks, hope for a better world enduresOur hosts and guests offer a timely reminder that there's no place for pessimism or hopelessness in We the People. Even as the world seems to move backwards, there are glimmers of hope — such as the Supreme Court's decision to uphold Alabama's Black voters rights — that remind us change is possible when people stand together with one voice and demand justice.Meanwhile, Abby reminds us that even though the news may suggest otherwise, the majority of Americans do in fact support things like background checks on gun sales and other laws to promote safety and fairness. We're not as divided as the news and some politicians would have us believe.[25:15] - What If You Can't March? You can still make your voice heardCan't make the We the People march on July 2nd in Fort Lauderdale? You can still make an impact. There will be sister marches taking place in South Carolina, Chicago, New York, LA, and Houston. Details are available at https://wtpmarch.org. You can also follow along online @WTPmarch on Instagram and TikTok.Finally, the coalition will continue to thrive after the march is finished, working to register voters, send mail-in ballots, and more.RESOURCES:[1:24] Healthy Housing Foundation[1:36]Dream Defenders[1:45]Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America[1:57] We the People March[18:00] About Alabama's Voting Rights Act[31:31] We The People InstagramFOLLOW:Follow Lauren Hogan: LinkedInFollow AHFter Hours: InstagramABOUT AFTER HOURS:AIDS Healthcare Foundation is the world's largest HIV/AIDS service organization, operating in 45 countries globally. 5.4.2023 #RolandMartinUnfiltered: TX Approves State Power to Overturn Elections, Gillum Acquitted, DreamDefenders Arrested  GOP-controlled Senate in Texas has proposed a controversial new law allowing the state to overturn elections. This has sparked concerns about the future of democracy in the state, and we'll have all the details in this fast-moving story. Former Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum has been acquitted of lying to the FBI. However, the jury has deadlocked all other charges against him and co-defendant Sharon Lettman-Hicks. We will break down what this could mean for the former Mayor. Tensions are rising in Florida, where 14 protesters were arrested outside  Governor Ron DeSantis' office. The protesters were demonstrating against new conservative laws in the state, highlighting the growing divide between activists and the governor's administration. We will speak with the Dream Defenders about their fight to make Florida safe and fair for all. ProPublica's bombshell report alleging deeper financial ties between Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Republican donor Harlan Crow than previously known. This raises serious questions about the court's impartiality, and we'll have all the latest details. In New York, calls are growing for justice and accountability after the death of a black man who was placed in a chokehold by a fellow white subway passenger. The urgency for action is mounting, and we'll update you on all the latest developments. More than ten years ago, Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Black teen, was fatally shot in a gated neighborhood in Florida while on his way back to their home from a local convenience store. Martin's death -- and his shooter's acquittal -- would go on to spark a new generation of protests and global attention on police and citizen violence against Black people. In the wake of this renewed energy around anti-Black racism, a coalition of racial justice organizations like The Black Lives Matter Network, Dream Defenders, and Black Youth Project sprouted all over the country, signaling a new era of Black organizing. These groups helped lay down the groundwork for the massive and enduring protests that erupted in Ferguson, Mo., in the days and months after Michael Brown Jr., an unarmed Black teenager, was killed by a white police officer on August 9, 2014. Within this larger movement for Black lives, the fathers of countless slain Black boys rose up to lead the cause. On this episode of Into America, host Trymaine Lee speaks with Tracy Martin, Trayvon Martin's dad, along with Michael Brown Sr., and Jacob Blake Sr. about the weight of Black fatherhood amid a global fight for Black life. For a transcript, please visit msnbc.com/intoamerica. Follow and share the show on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, using the handle @intoamericapod.Thoughts? The third Thursday in November is a National Day of Mourning, where we mourn the genocide of millions of Native people and the theft of Native land, and where we honor the ongoing struggle for Native liberation and Land Back across Turtle Island. In honor of Indigenous Peoples Day last month — and in support of the Indigenous-led week of action People v. Fossil Fuels — the Indigenous Environmental Network, The Red Nation, and the Center for Constitutional Rights held an online discussion with frontline Indigenous Water Protectors: Water Is Our Critical Infrastructure — Lawfare by Oil and Gas Won't Stop Us from Winning. Activists Anne White Hat (Sicangu Lakota Oyate) and Sungmanitu Bluebird (Oglala Sioux) joined Center for Constitutional Rights Senior Attorney Pamela Spees and moderator Advocacy Director Nadia Ben-Yousef to discuss the increasingly desperate tactics by the oil and gas industry to draft and pass laws that target Indigenous people and threaten all those who take an unflinching stance against capitalist violence and the destruction of the Earth. They highlighted the important legal victory by Anne White Hat and other Water Protectors who fought back against Louisiana's industry-developed “critical infrastructure” law—and won! This podcast is taken from that event, with a new introduction from Nadia Ben-Youssef situating the discussion in the context of the National Day of Mourning. Resources:Report from the Indigenous Environmental Network: Indigenous Resistance Against CarbonThe Red Nation and The Red Deal White Hat v. The University of Tennessee Knoxville College of Social Work (UTK) has a phenomenal social work program, with the opportunity to do your bachelor's master's, and doctorate of social work online. Scholarships are available. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Armen Henderson from Miami, Florida. Armen is the Director of Health Programs at Dream Defenders, the Founder of Dade County Street Response, and an Internal Medicine Physician and Assistant Professor at the University of Miami. He talks about his community-based work in bringing medicine from out of the confines of the hospital setting directly to poor and working-class communities with a variety of programs ranging from wellness checks and case management to Stop the Bleed gunshot wound trainings. Armen discusses how social determinants of health are rooted in racism and classism and social inequity. For example, he talks about how hurricanes in Miami are an environmental issue connected to climate change that intersects with racism and classism in terms of who is most impacted by hurricanes and do not have the resources to simply leave town when danger strikes. He explains how his team serves folks who are unhoused in a variety of ways, particularly during the COVID pandemic, which led to him being racially profiled and arrested in front of his home. Armen shares how he got into this work, which was directly connected to the murder of Trayvon Martin and connecting with Dream Defenders, who were formed at that time due to the killing of Trayvon. Armen saw a way to challenge racism and classism in medicine and organize for racial justice and medicine for the people using an abolitionist, anti-capitalist approach. I hope this conversation inspires you to action. www.dreamdefenders.org Instagram dr.doitall305 Facebook armen.henderson

After George Floyd's murder, police departments across the country faced criticisms of systemic bias and a failure to reflect the communities they patrol and so they worked to enact reforms. But diversifying efforts have been underway for years inside the Miami Police Department. Roughly a quarter of all officers in Miami PD are Black, which is a much greater percentage than the city's overall Black population. Over the past year, Black officers have been pushing for even more reform within the department, from the top down. One of those officers is Sergeant Stanley Jean-Poix, President of the Miami Community Police Benevolent Association, the second oldest Black police union in the country. Jean-Poix joined the force over 20 years ago with the goal of enacting change from within the department. He led a two-year fight against the former police chief Jorge Colina, alleging he oversaw a department that treated Black officers unfairly, and let racist cops slide. Colina resigned last year. But can true change come from the inside? James Valsaint, a Miami-based artist and activist, doesn't think so. Valsaint was born in Little Haiti, one of the neighborhoods that Sgt. Jean-Poix patrols. His interactions with the police growing up were not positive, whether the officer was Black or white. Valsaint got active following the killing of Trayvon Martin; he joined the Dream Defenders, who fought against Florida's Stand Your Ground law, and later helped to organize actions in Miami following George Floyd's murder. For Valsaint, defunding the police is just the first step on the long march to police abolition. For these two men from Miami, the goal of reducing police violence against Black Americans is shared, but they see different paths forward. Trymaine sits down with Sgt. Jean-Poix and Valsaint for a frank and challenging conversation on the progress and limitations of police reform. For a transcript, please visit https://www.msnbc.com/intoamerica. Thoughts? Feedback? Abolitionist Social Work: Possibilities, Paradox and Praxis

Join us for a conversation about challenging carceral social work through the development and practice of an abolitionist social work. As demands to defund the police often look to social work as an alternative, panelists Tanisha "Wakumi" Douglas, Mimi Kim, Kirk "Jae" James and Cameron Rasmussen discuss the cautions of and possibilities for abolitionist social work. Social work, historically and today, has been deeply embedded in systems of carceral control. With social work's legacy of ties to policing and oppressive family regulation through the child welfare system, the social work community is actively imagining and working towards a social work rooted in abolition, turning to traditions of resistance that also characterize its history. This conversation, organized by the Network to Advance Abolitionist Social Work (NAASW) in partnership with Haymarket Books will look at challenging carceral social work through the development and practice of an abolitionist social work. The Network to Advance Abolitionist Social Work (NAASW) is a group of social workers from different parts of the US, building a year-long initiative to support abolitionist work in the field of social work. The initiative includes ongoing political education, research / knowledge generation around carceral and abolition social work, developing an online hub of abolitionist social work resources, and broader organizing and advocacy efforts to build abolitionist ideas and practices into social work. ---------------------------------------------------- Speakers: Tanisha “Wakumi” Douglas is the daughter of an undocumented immigrant who served 33 years in prison. Tanisha “Wakumi” Douglas has dedicated her life to building leadership among youth most impacted by mass incarceration and other oppressive systems. Wakumi is Co-founder/Executive Director of S.O.U.L. Sisters Leadership Collective, which builds leadership with systems-involved girls & TGNC youth, in both Miami and NYC. She has worked as a restorative justice circle keeper, social worker, community organizer, trainer, and popular educator for organizations including the Dream Defenders, Harlem Children's Zone and Children's Defense Fund. Her work has been featured in Huffington Post, NPR, and Miami New Times and her books include Sing a Rhythm, Dance a Blues (Morris), and Making Change (Kruse). Mimi Kim is the founder of Creative Interventions and a co-founder of INCITE! She is a long-time activist, advocate and researcher challenging gender-based violence at its intersection with state violence and creating community accountability, transformative justice and other community-based alternatives to criminalization. Mimi is also an Associate Professor of social work at California State University, Long Beach and co-editor in chief of Affilia. Her recent publications include “The Carceral Creep” and “From Carceral Feminism to Transformative Justice". Kirk “Jae” James is a Clinical Professor and Human Rights activist at the NYU Silver School of Social Work. He completed his doctorate from the School of Social Policy and Practice at The University of Pennsylvania on May 2013. Dr. James's primary research and publications focus on deconstructing issues related to mass incarceration. Cameron Rasmussen is a social worker, educator and facilitator. Making connections between the movement to abolish police and prisons in the US and the struggle for liberation in Palestine and beyond. ——————————————— A historic multiracial rebellion has exploded and sustained across the U.S. in response to the police lynching of George Floyd and others brutalized and killed at the hands of US police. This uprising has coincided with the escalating colonization and annexation of Palestinian land, supported by the white supremacist Trump administration. Organizers on the ground in the U.S. and in Palestine are using this moment to demonstrate the ongoing connections between colonization and modern militarized policing, and why in order to combat U.S. racial monopoly capitalism and imperialism, we must abolish policing, and all aspects of settler carceral regimes. This discussion will bring together activists and scholars to examine movements organizing to dismantle the Prison Industrial Complex (PIC) and free political prisoners as part of liberation struggles led by Black people in the U.S. and Palestinian people in occupied Palestine. Dr. Gin Love Thompson is a nationally recognized psychotherapist, author, civil rights activist and racial justice educator. A member of the Trayvon Martin movement and official coalition, Attorney Benjamin Crump has referred to Dr. Gin as, “an unsung hero of the Trayvon Martin and civil rights movement.” She has also served as lead organizer in additional high profile civil rights cases. As we approach the 90 day mark of the 2020 Election Dr. Gin is hosting a series of conversations with friends and colleagues creating a platform for our modern day leaders in the Civil Rights Movement to inform and inspire as we enter this dire time that will determine the future of our country, and our very lives. In the coming weeks you will hear from the prolific Civil Rights Attorney and bestselling author Benjamin Crump, legendary original Black Panther and author Professor Jamal Joseph, as well as relevant esteemed voices of the racial justice movement such as anti-racist author and speaker Tim Wise. The series of conversations begins with André Cymone and Morris Hayes. André Cymone, a Minneapolis native, rose to fame with Prince as collaborator and bassist during the pre-Revolution era. He achieved solo success in the 80’s with hits including The Dance Electric. In addition to his own discography which includes recent and racially relevant songs such as Trayvon, Black Man in America, Vote, American Dream and more, Cymone has produced billboard blockbusters such as Jody Watley, Adam Ant and Tom Jones. Cymone is an impassioned civil rights activist using his music to powerfully inform and unite. Cymone has also been a forerunner and ardent supporter of Bernie Sanders’s campaign and was a significant voice in now Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison’s campaign. His latest release and mini-documentary video, Our World is on Fire, is a timely, poignant and powerful representation of our current societal ills and uprising in the days following the massacre of George Floyd. Morris Hayes was keyboardist and musical director of Prince’s band The New Power Generation for nearly twenty years. He is a distinguished inductee of Arkansas Black Hall of Fame, his home state, alongside of legends such as Dr. Maya Angelou. 100% of the money from your purchase of Our World is on Fire by André Cymone is being donated to Sabathani Community Center in Minneapolis, Movement 4 Black Lives, and Dream Defenders. https://andrecymone.bandcamp.com/track/our-world-is-on-fire

My best friends Jenelle and Barry work the frontlines of communications across the US.. from NYC to LA..It was always the tough times that brought us closer together…  Our parents and grandparents survived war, famine, racism and discrimination -- let’s also celebrate many of our grandparents chose to help to fight racism:  Black, white, Asian, Hispanic, Latino, Native American, Middle Eastern -- we all are coming to you with love.  Our Grandparents faced greater hardship in their time: what can help is knowing we are part of a continuation of history -- but change will only come when we put ourselves into uncomfortable situations. We are better than this. This is a call to action podcast, not a sit around and be comfortable podcast. Stay woke friends: Please listen to this full 2 hour podcast - it contains valuable information that we do not usually publicly discuss + you’ll do your part just by listening -- we wanted to make this easy and memorable for you -- and all of this is shared only with love -- no judgement.  We have a responsibility: Here’s the challenge we all have to step up to:   We must implement change:  “what did you do in this time?” - we will be remembered by the actions we took during Covid + the Financial Crisis + the #BlackLivesMatter movement.  Jenelle, Barry and I, as friends, would like to welcome you to check out our shared resources: we have thoughtfully put together for you + we also would love for you to do your own research, read, learn, educate yourself. "Radical simply means grasping things at the root." - Angela Davis Meet Ana Samantha, part of the Miami Core-Team of the Dream Defenders.  Founded in 2012 after the murder of Trayvon Martin by a few university students across Florida tired of the systematic over policing and incarceration of poor communities of color, The Dream Defenders was started in order to make powerful change come to Florida.  And change is exactly what Ana was looking for a year and a half ago after working a job in retail that left her unfulfilled.  With a desire to get more involved in her community, Ana volunteered with the Dream Defenders and unlocked her passion for activism. This year they released the Freedom Papers, a 7 part manifesto outlining their vision for a Florida that is able to serve the everyday needs of its people and that asks our elected representatives to put our safety before corporate profits. Recently touted as "too radical" by the Republican Governors Association, the Dream Defenders have become a voice for the underserved, marginalized, and disenfranchised and are helping pave the way for a Florida where everyone can have an equal opportunity to live their best life, be who they want to be, and live how they want to live. #thisistheyear We hope you enjoy the conversation, Alex and Jeanette Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube @plantedinmiami For behind the scenes show notes, videos and more visit www.plantedinmiami.com

Mass Shootings, Race, and the Political Hand Wringing Over Gun Control

In the aftermath of the Parkland shooting, there was predictable and familiar outrage, but also, an eerily comfortable ease with which, as a nation, we processed this tragedy. There have been more than 50 mass shootings and attempted mass shootings in US schools since the Columbine massacre in 1999. Students from across the country have organized protests and walkouts. They have taken to social media and TV, crowded into State Houses, and confronted lawmakers in nationally televised town hall. Has this movement, led by young survivors of gun violence, flipped the script on our national discourse about gun law reform? In 2013, however, after the shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman, when student protesters who called themselves Dream Defenders met with Governor Rick Scott, he did not change his position on Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” laws one bit. One of the things that is clearly different about the debate this week, animated by young people, and the young people who protested five years ago: the race of the protesters. The positions taken by both sides today have a familiar look: some advocate for re-instating the assault weapons ban and strengthening background checks; while others propose arming teachers and “hardening” schools as targets. The question many asked after children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary school were massacred in Connecticut five years ago is the same one being asked now: is this moment different? We are joined by Tammatha Woodhouse, Principal of Excel Academy in West Baltimore, where seven students have been violently killed within the last 15 months. Later on in the program, we are joined by Julie Bykowicz, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, and Firmin DeBrabander, a scholar from MICA and author of the book “Do Guns Make Us Free? Democracy and the Armed Society.”

For this episode we interviewed Chad Chavira.   Chad is the lead organizer for #NoNazisAtUF, the student led organization that protested Richard Spencer’s speech at University of Florida back on October 19th. Chad is also an organizer with Dream Defenders and a junior at the University of Florida, studying Political Science and Sociology.   We talk to Chad about organizing on a college campus with a particular emphasis on all the planning, mobilization, and political education efforts he and his comrades put into Gainesville's confrontation with Richard Spencer. Josh talked to Chad about the pros, cons, and challenges of mobilizing large groups of liberals in anti-fascist spaces in areas where there are not enough leftists to confront fascist speakers.    Chad also talked about non-violence, self-defense, and his stance on nazi punchers and nazi huggers alike.   We also talked more broadly about organizing strategies for student movements and antifascist movements. Finally, we got the chance to talk with Chad a little bit about what his work with Dream Defenders has meant for him and what he’s learned by being a part of their organizing efforts and campaigns in Florida over the past couple years.

The tribunal was sponsored by Code Pink Dec. first and second 2016 here in Washington DC at the University of the District of Columbia Law School. On our last show, we featured voices from the first day of the tribunal, which focused on the lies used to invade Iraq in 2003—lies, war crimes and other violations of international law that killed, injured and displaced millions of Iraqis and destroyed their country. Day 2, featured on today’s show, focuses on the costs of the invasion. IN ADDITION TO THE FIVE TRILLION in US TREASURE WASTED on the illegal war,the additional costs to the people and land of Iraq, ongoing human costs to the invading country—the United States, costs to the planet and so much more. Participants called for truth and accountability because To this day, in 2017, no one has been held accountable as the United States continues to make war in Iraq, throughout the Middle East and builds up arms and soldiers on the border of Russia. The tribunal is an ongoing online project that can reached and viewed in full at www.iraqtribunal.org. Pictured on this post: Rachel Gilmer of the Dream Defenders and the Movement for Black Lives testifying at the tribunal.
