In honor of #mentalhealthawareness month, this episode of the Social Work Rants podcast focuses on workplace wellness and burnout in the social work field. Basiliso and Kelecia Smith, MSW, LMSW, discuss how current workplace well-being programs often fail to address the actual needs of workers, citing a Harvard Business Review article that noted mental health needs and burnout continue to rise despite corporate spending on wellness programs. They explored the challenges of balancing caregiving responsibilities with work demands, particularly for the 63 million Americans who are caregivers. The conversation covered how administrative burdens, high client volumes, and inflexible work structures contribute to clinician burnout, with both participants sharing personal experiences of long commutes and unsustainable work schedules. They discussed the importance of organizations meeting workers where they are and involving staff in the development of well-being programs beyond surface-level initiatives like free coffee and happy hours. Listen to today's podcast... With so many companies investing in workplace wellness, it comes as a surprise that research shows that few companies assess the health needs of their employee population before deciding which wellness services to invest in. Even more surprising, is that only about a third of companies evaluate and measure how their programs impact the health and wellness of their employees or their bottom line. A productive employee wellness program assesses the health, wants, and needs of your employees and then addresses these issues, wants and needs in a meaningful and measurable way that the employer can track over time Take One Action Today To Build Your #Resiliency! Here are today's Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating the Mental Health Month: Simply offering a wellness program, no matter how well-intentioned, provides no guarantee of improving employees' well-being or having any value or return-on-investment. Workers must be aware the program exists and be persuaded to use it. Engaging company managers are key. Managers that engaged their workers were 28% more likely to participate in a wellness program offered by their company than were average employees. Wellness is a commitment. It is a commitment by the individual, their manager and by the company. It can take several years for the investment to be realized, but is well worth doing, because a healthy workplace is clearly a win/win situation for both employee and employer. Dr. Laura welcomes Hall of Fame speaker, author, and workplace culture expert Michael Kerr for a conversation on how leaders shape environments where people and organizations thrive. Drawing on decades of global experience, Michael believes that, rather than depleting us, work should energize us, and that leaders play a defining role in creating cultures grounded in purpose and connection. He shares that leadership is less about managing tasks and more about influencing people in meaningful ways. According to Michael, the leadership goal should be to become a culture leader who recognizes the profound effects of work on our health, relationships, and sense of identity. Together, Dr. Laura and Michael explore how small, everyday moments can have a lasting impact on trust and team cohesion. Culture is built through consistent, human interactions rather than grand gestures. They highlight the importance of simple acknowledgments and thoughtful communication in fostering hope during uncertain times. They also examine the rise of incivility in workplaces and the cost of tolerating harmful behavior, together reinforcing the importance of awareness and accountability in leadership. The message is a powerful reminder that when leaders prioritize people and lead with intention, they not only transform workplaces but also contribute to a better world. “Leadership is about connecting with humans and influencing them in a positive way toward a better future.” - Michael Kerr “Leaders have a disproportionate impact on the happiness of their employees and the success of their culture.” — Michael Kerr About Michael Kerr: Michael Kerr, CSP (Certified Speaking Professional), Canadian Speaking Hall of Fame inductee, is an international business speaker, very funny motivational speaker, workshop trainer, and the author of six books including, Inspiring Workplaces: Creating the Kind of Workplace Where Everyone Wants to Work, and, most recently, The Humor Advantage: Why Some Businesses Are Laughing All the Way to the Bank. Michael travels the world researching, writing, and speaking about inspiring workplace cultures. He is known as one of North America's leading speakers on workplace culture and on how businesses leverage their humor resources to deliver outrageous results -including lower absenteeism rates, lower employee turnover rates, less stress, more creativity, more effective communication, and increased sales. His hilarious, inspiring, and thought-provoking programs are often rated as having the greatest impact and relevance of any presentation at a conference, which is why Michael is listed as one of Canada's most requested funny motivational business speakers. Parker King introduced Haba Na Haba training on the Ash Said It show as a transformative approach to leadership development. The name comes from a Swahili proverb meaning little by little the pot gets filled. This philosophy drives his work by focusing on incremental growth and sustainable progress rather than instant perfection. Parker was inspired to create this program to help leaders move away from exhausting deficit based models and toward a more natural way of working. For those new to the concept CliftonStrengths is a Gallup assessment that identifies a person unique natural talents. It matters because it provides a precise language for what makes an individual productive and successful. Unlike traditional leadership training which focuses on fixing weaknesses to create well rounded employees a strengths based approach focuses on maximizing what people already do well. This leads to higher engagement and less burnout because leaders are operating in their zone of genius. A common misconception about CliftonStrengths is that it serves as an excuse to ignore weaknesses. In reality it is about managing around weaknesses so they do not hinder performance while investing time where there is the greatest potential for excellence. Leaders who engage in Haba Na Haba training typically see their teams become more collaborative and efficient. The shift occurs when team members stop judging each other for their differences and start valuing those differences as complementary assets. One small change that leads to a big shift is simply reassigning tasks based on energy rather than just job titles. When a leader aligns a project with a team member natural talent the quality of work increases while the time spent on the task decreases. This training benefits emerging leaders and high growth teams the most as it builds a foundation of trust and psychological safety. The first step for anyone curious about using strengths intentionally is to take the CliftonStrengths assessment and review the results through the lens of recent successes. A small action a leader can take this week is to ask their team members which specific tasks gave them the most energy over the last few days. For individuals seeking direct support Parker offers coaching packages ranging from introductory discovery sessions to intensive executive partnerships designed to turn raw talent into consistent performance. Web: http://habanahabatraining.com/ About: Haba Na Haba is a CliftonStrengths® and soft skills training company with over 18 years of experience helping teams harness their unique talents, communicate effectively, and build inclusive environments. In this episode of Success Leaves Clues, host Robin Bailey is joined by special co-host Billi Moyer for a timely conversation with Christine Lacey, VP of Revenue at Lume Women's Health, a Toronto-based women's health clinic built for women by women, focused on proactive, personalized care that helps close longstanding gaps in women's healthcare. Christine shares how Lume was founded by four women (three physicians), and why women's healthcare cannot be compared “apples to apples” with traditional models historically built around the male body. She explains why women are not “small men,” and how reproductive and hormonal health influences whole-body outcomes, from brain health to cardiovascular health, making sex-specific care essential across a woman's life. The conversation highlights the midlife care gap, how the system supports puberty and family planning, but often drops women when disease prevention, longevity, and true healthspan should be the focus. Christine also shares a striking stat, women live longer, but spend about 25% more time in poor health than men, strengthening the case for proactive care models. They explore accessibility, equity, and why corporate Canada may be one of the fastest levers for progress, including advocacy like the push for a menopause billing code in Ontario. The episode closes with the future Christine wants for the next generation of women. In this episode of Quick Fire Friday, host Rob Cameron interviews Trent Morgan, founder of Motivision, shares how he helps businesses overcome burnout, poor accountability, and misaligned teams through leadership alignment and cultural transformation. He explains the importance of clarity, communication, and regular team check-ins to build trust and improve performance. Trent discusses real-world examples of companies that reduced turnover and reignited motivation by aligning people with purpose. Listeners will learn practical steps to create more connected and purpose-driven workplaces. Key Takeaways for Small Business Owners: Clarity is the foundation of success – Teams perform better when everyone knows their role, purpose, and what's expected of them. Alignment beats effort – Hard work alone doesn't guarantee results; aligning people, purpose, and systems creates real progress. Our hero crafts outstanding reviews following the experience of listening to our special guests. Are you the one we've been waiting for? Leadership must focus on vision, not firefighting – Great leaders work on the business, not just in it, ensuring long-term stability. Reducing burnout increases productivity – When teams feel heard and supported, engagement rises and burnout drops significantly. Systems sustain performance – Businesses don't rise to goals—they fall to the level of their systems, so structure and rhythm are essential. One action small business owners can take: According to Trent Morgan, one action small business owners can take is to hold regular team check-ins or huddles to ensure everyone is aligned on goals, clear about their roles, and supported in their work — fostering stronger communication, trust, and accountability. Supporting healthy employees isn't just about offering perks—it's about creating a workplace culture where well-being translates into productivity and long-term success. Few understand this better than Cody Beard, owner of Prime IV Hydration & Wellness in Wichita. With years of leadership experience in manufacturing and a deep commitment to health, Beard brings a unique perspective on why wellness strategies should be at the core of every business. Employee well-being has evolved far beyond casual mentions in mission statements. Today, businesses face growing challenges with burnout, stress, and turnover. For Ford Saeks, business growth strategist and host of The Business Growth Show, this is more than an HR issue—it's a business performance strategy. Saeks often reminds leaders that their people are their most valuable asset, and organizations that fail to prioritize health are missing a critical growth lever. Beard's own journey underscores this truth. Before launching Prime IV, he spent years managing large teams in demanding manufacturing environments, where efficiency and engagement were constant priorities. “I was always looking for ways to keep my team safe, maintain wellness, and drive engagement,” Beard explains. Traditional measures like on-site chiropractors and massage therapists helped, but he recognized the need for something more impactful—something that went beyond words and delivered real results. That search led Beard and his wife to Prime IV Hydration & Wellness. What began as a personal commitment to better health evolved into a mission-driven business designed to help others achieve the same. Today, Beard operates two Prime IV locations in Wichita, offering hydration and vitamin therapies that support energy, focus, and recovery. For business leaders, these services represent more than a luxury—they're a practical solution for supporting healthy employees in a fast-paced world. The connection between wellness and workplace performance isn't theoretical. Organizations that invest in employee health consistently report higher retention rates, stronger engagement, and increased productivity. Beard sees this firsthand with companies that implement wellness strategies through Prime IV. “There's a difference between saying you value your employees and actually doing something about it,” he says. Providing tangible resources shows employees that their well-being truly matters, creating trust and loyalty that no policy document can match. Saeks points out another key advantage: differentiation. In an era of talent shortages, offering meaningful wellness initiatives can set businesses apart from competitors. “Healthy employees don't just work harder—they work smarter,” Saeks emphasizes. Companies that prioritize health send a clear message about their culture, which resonates with top talent and strengthens employer branding. One of Beard's most practical suggestions for companies hesitant to start is simple: take one step. That might mean inviting a wellness provider for a lunch-and-learn, or giving team members a chance to experience a service firsthand. “Send in a champion from your team,” Beard advises. “Once they experience the benefits, it becomes easy to advocate for more.” This grassroots approach often sparks the momentum needed to make wellness part of the organizational fabric. Beyond physical health, Beard sees wellness as a catalyst for engagement and morale. The experience at Prime IV is designed with this in mind. From calming environments to personalized care, every detail is aimed at helping clients feel valued and cared for—an experience that businesses can mirror within their own culture. “Our goal is to make wellness approachable and enjoyable,” Beard explains. “When people feel better, they show up better—in every aspect of life.” Supporting healthy employees isn't a passing trend. It's a long-term strategy for businesses that want to thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape. For leaders like Saeks and Beard, the message is clear: prioritize your people's health, and performance will follow. Watch the full episode on YouTube.
