This week, investigative journalists — Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — broke news that a second Jane Doe case had been filed against Myrtle Beach pastor John-Paul Miller, accusing him of sexually abusing a 14-year-old student at Cathedral Hall Academy (formerly known as Grand Strand Academy), a school owned JP's father Wayne Miller, who is named as a co-defendant in the case.  In 1999, when JP Miller was 20 years old he allegedly molested the child after inviting her to play piano with him alone in the church sanctuary. The girl told a teacher about what JP allegedly did and instead of the school offering the child help, she was forced to write “I will not lie about JP Miller” 5,000 times.  Mandy and Liz break down the latest allegations against the Millers and share text messages between JP, his ex-wife and Mica from 2022 or before that addresses the child sexual abuse allegations against JP.  Also on the show, part one of the history of the Millers' alleged scheme to use their school as a staging ground for abuse. Plus an update on the Justice for Mica protesters and JP's frivolous lawsuits against them. Let's dive in...

From the Alex Murdaugh trial's alleged jury tampering and subsequent appeals; investigations into the deaths of Stephen Smith and Mica Miller, examining potential foul play; and the ongoing legal battles surrounding Bowen Turner and Michael Colucci, both facing multiple accusations of serious crimes — we covered a lot of cases and controversies in 2024. Also this year, we added tragic death of Christa Bauer Gilley to our focus, and continued our focus on advocacy for victims' rights reform, specifically concerning coercive control. On this special episode of True Sunlight, the team of journalists looks back on the madness in the South Carolina Justice System, plus another shocking update in the Myrtle Beach church world related to JP Miller and Solid Rock.  With our new billboards around the state and our coverage seeking answers, we hope to shake loose information in Stephen smiths case and Sandy hopes to hear back from SLED early in 2025. We are also actively seeking partners to create a new event in July that will celebrate Stephen Smith's life and draw attention to the 10 years that have passed without justice since his death. Summary Tim and Liz Coolis Jenkins discuss her book, Nice Churchy Patriarchy: Reclaiming Women's Humanity from Evangelicalism, and her journey unpacking the toxic aspects of conservative evangelicalism. She explores the concept of patriarchy and how it manifests in imbalanced power dynamics and restricts women's agency. Takeaways Patriarchy is any structure or system that involves imbalanced power between genders, particularly men and women. Patriarchy restricts women's agency and discourages them from embracing their full humanity. The concept of patriarchy is often disguised as complementarianism in conservative evangelical contexts. The biblical mandates used to justify patriarchal norms are often based on American cultural norms rather than biblical principles. Mainline churches, despite their traditional appearance, often have more progressive and inclusive theology compared to white evangelical churches.  Patriarchy is deeply ingrained in both the church and broader society, but it is not impossible to dismantle. Valuing characteristics traditionally associated with femininity, such as empathy and collaboration, is essential for building more inclusive and equitable spaces. Honest conversations, diverse perspectives, and a reevaluation of traditional interpretations of scripture are necessary for challenging and changing patriarchal systems. The intersection of patriarchy and the church requires a critical examination of leadership structures and a commitment to empowering women and other marginalized groups. This week I was joined by my new friend Liz Cooledge Jenkins to discuss her new book "Nice Churchy Patriarchy: Reclaiming Women's Humanity from Evangelicalism". Even in the warmest and most welcoming evangelical churches, patriarchy looms as an ever-present force... Patriarchy isn't always in your face and Liz helps us take an unflinching look at the ways misogyny's subtler forms impact every aspect of women's experience in church. Liz shares lots of stories from her own church experiences where Patriarchy reared its ugly head and put Liz in some less than stellar situations. I really enjoyed this conversation with Liz and I enjoyed reading her book overall. Enjoy! This latest episode of Snarky Faith features a compelling conversation with Liz Cooledge Jenkins, whose new book, "Nice Churchy Patriarchy: Reclaiming Women's Humanity from Evangelicalism," offers a critical yet hopeful look at the entrenched patriarchal norms in evangelical Christianity. Jenkins takes us on a journey through her own experiences within the church, detailing the subtle forms of misogyny that often go unchecked and discussing the significant impact they have on women's roles and voices in faith communities. Through a mix of personal anecdotes and theological insights, she illuminates the challenges of navigating a faith tradition marred by gender inequality, while also outlining a vision for dismantling these oppressive structures. The discussion delves into key themes of the book, such as "Naming Misogyny's Faces" and "Dismantling Misogyny's Power," and explores Jenkins's proposals for reinterpreting scripture, expanding theology, and reimagining church leadership to embrace full gender equality. Jenkins's articulate and passionate discourse provides not just a critique but a beacon of hope for those seeking to reform evangelicalism from within, making this episode a must-listen for anyone interested in the intersection of faith, gender, and social justice.

Episode Summary:Author Liz Cooledge Jenkins joins us on the show to discuss the harmful effects of patriarchy on men, women, families, LGBTQIA persons, culture, nations, and spiritual communities. With its ties to domination, violence, aggression, militarism, and white supremacy, patriarchy centers white, heterosexual men at the expense of everyone else. Patriarchal communities often tolerate or even condone violence against women, including domestic violence, sexual assault, and honor killings. Patriarchy comes to us in overt and subtle ways, but even nice, churchy patriarchy is toxic AF.How has patriarchy damaged your identity and self-worth? How has patriarchy impacted the assault on women's reproductive rights and what might it look like for you to resist patriarchy in a post-Roe world? How do we use literary criticism to re-interpret those clobber passages in the Bible? Why have we seen an uptick in violent, hyper-masculine, patriarchal expressions since 2016? This episode answers all those questions and more as Liz and I dissect, dismantle, and destroy the theological, social, and sexual manifestations of patriarchal culture.Liz wrote Nice Churchy Patriarchy in the hope of helping evangelical and formerly evangelical women make sense of their experiences in church, feel seen and validated in the frustrations they may have, and be inspired to chart a new way forward. "Oppressive mindsets, theologies, and systems are not okay. Change is needed. We are not asking for too much, too soon. We deserve better. And we have the power to find that better—to build it together," writes Jenkins. This practical conversation addresses the ways you and I can work to dismantle patriarchal structures, theologies, communities, and families to achieve a more just world. Doug Pagitt talks with Liz Cooledge Jenkins.  They talk all things women and church—drawing on Liz's new book "Nice Churchy Patriarchy: Reclaiming Women's Humanity from Evangelicalism."  The book spent some time as the Amazon #1 bestseller in Women's Spirituality.  They discuss the connections we could draw between the book and the current political climate, from how Christian love and care should include removing bans and restrictions on abortion, to refusing to vote for candidates who normalize basic disrespect toward women, to being willing to make waves in our churches (rather than settling for veneers of niceness) toward the common good. Liz argues in the book that even in the warmest and most welcoming evangelical churches, patriarchy looms as an ever-present force, suppressing women's possibilities and debilitating whole communities. Well-intentioned churchgoers and church leaders have bought into deeply-entrenched male-dominated mindsets, power structures, and theologies that are not working—not for women, and really not for anyone. Liz is a Stanford University graduate (BS in Symbolic Systems) and has an MDiv from Fuller Theological Seminary.  She writes at the intersections of faith, feminism, and social justice. She blog at lizcooledgejenkins.com and (formerly) Patheos, is a regular contributor to Feminism & Religion, and has written for other outlets such as Sojourners and The Christian Century

Ken welcomes author and advocate Liz Cooledge Jenkins to talk about her new book: Nice Churchy Patriarchy: Reclaiming Women's Humanity from Evangelicalism. When Liz went off to Stanford University, she connected with a group of "Jesus Followers" who were part of an evangelical global campus ministry. In time, she believed she was "called" to pastoral ministry. After graduation, she joined the staff of "Faith Bible"* Church working with college students. But when she was considered for a promotion from full-time intern to candidate for permanent "director" role, she was thoroughly quizzed in the interview about her views on both women in ministry and LGBTQ+. Her questions and evolving beliefs, in the minds of the decision-makers, made her "ineligible" for the job. Patriarchy clearly emerged as the church's policy. She enrolled in seminary to pursue those questions from a biblical, theological, social and cultural perspective, earning an M.Div. from Fuller Theological Seminary. Her conclusions form the content of this compelling book which Ken read in its entirety. As a recovering white evangelical republican male (The Beached White Male), Ken fully recommends Liz's book and this conversation. It is both a challenge to churches and Christians who remain doggedly committed to patriarchy and exclusion as "biblical" and an encouragement to the many who, like Ken and Liz, are in recovery from the toxicity of a religion that robs people of their dignity and value.SHOW NOTES*NOTE: "Faith Bible" is not the name of the church. In her book, Liz employs pseudonyms for the individuals, churches, and institutions she references. Her story is not meant to dehumanize or demonize anyone - but to bring to light the damage and wounding inflicted by toxic beliefs and policies that rob communities of faith of the contribution that would otherwise bring energy, life, and a wider perspective.Support the show
