Morehouse School of Medicine, with support from Ferring Pharmaceuticals, launched a new initiative championing equity in fertility care for Black women. FertilityEquity is an e-learning program focusing on fertility care for Black women. It's available to the public, but created for healthcare professionals and fertility clinic staff. Dr. Lasha Clarke, an assistant director of research and translation at the Center for Maternal Health Equity at Morehouse School of Medicine, talks more about the program. Data shows Black women entrepreneurs are the fastest-growing demographic of entrepreneurs. However, Black women entrepreneurs face a myriad of challenges, including a lack of venture capital investment, resources and mentorship. In an effort to empower Black girls and women entrepreneurs, Southern Black Girls Consortium recently launched the Dream Investment Program. LaTosha Brown, the visionary founder of the Southern Black Girls, discusses the goals of the program and its application process. The deadline to apply for the program, which is open to young women entrepreneurs between the ages of 14-24, is Sat. Nov.30.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're back after a brief hiatus! We know you missed us, so we came back ready to talk about all of the events that transpired during our absence. We start off catching up with each other on the past week, with Julian letting us know what his wedding swag was (5:06). Mal lets us know that white people are in Harlem kissing the feet of black Israelites (12:20), and tells us about his experience in honoring the life of a late friend of the show . The BET awards happened, and Mal was extremely disappointed in, well, everything (16:09). We break down the new Will Smith song/performance (19:09), the Usher tribute (33:45), and the winners (including the Tyla v. Sexyy Red debate) (52:58). Rick Ross made a bad decision and we discuss the recording that came out of him (and his DJ) receiving consequences for their actions (1:08:54). Bronny James got drafted to the Lakers, and we are honest about how we feel about it (1:24:13). By the way, was Derek Fisher a great player (1:44:06)? Tweet Mal and let him know what you think. Caitlyn Clark and Angel Reese are teammates on the WNBA All Stars team and we debate which one of them is having a better rookie year (1:50:54). We briefly touch on the new music that dropped (1:59:14), and then get into the first voicemail: A sweet, summer child needs advice on an older man spinning her (2:04:15). We give her some brutal honesty (hey, she asked for it). Our second voicemail is from a gentlemen who had a bad experience with a woman and wants our permission to hate her (2:20:29). Meridian recently gained a new community space that is focused on uplifting black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs in Idaho.
On March 28, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. journeyed to Memphis, Tennessee, to support Black sanitation workers in their quest for dignity and fair treatment. He led a march of 6,000 people in solidarity with their cause, which unfortunately escalated into violence. Tragically, one person lost their life, while 50 were injured, and hundreds were detained. As the procession advanced through the iconic Beale Street, some young Black individuals began vandalizing storefronts. When they reached a critical juncture, fellow freedom rider James Lawson observed a significant police presence in riot gear, prompting concern for King's safety. Lawson persuaded him to depart the scene to avoid potential harm. The aftermath deeply troubled the civil rights icon. Just days later, on April 8, King was assassinated. Many clinicians are trained to focus on checklists and evaluations so we can walk in to work confident; knowing exactly what our protocols are. And while systems and processes are extremely important, we have to know how to use them flexibly. When we think about this in relation to cultural competency; we often think of eliminating biases in our evaluations and materials; but it goes so much deeper than that. We also need to think about how we interact with coworkers, how policies are impacting our students, or what's going on in the community we're working in. When we're too rigid in the way we do things or the way we think about our work, we may unintentionally make students, clients, families, or even our coworkers feel unwelcome. That's why I invited Melanie Evans to the De Facto Leaders podcast to talk about the concept of “cultural competemility”, and how it can help teachers, leaders, and therapists think about cultural responsiveness.Melanie Y. Evans, M.S. CCC-SLP is an ASHA-certified bilingual pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist licensed to practice in Texas and Oklahoma. She is also the founder of Pediatric Speech Sister, whose mission is to assist other speech-language pathologists on their cultural competency journeys and bring more inclusion in the field. Melanie dedicates her career to serving Black and Latinx populations and closing the academic achievement gap.In this conversation, Melanie shares:✅How professionals can better support black and brown children✅What is the school to prison pipeline, and what are some reasons it's persisting?✅Why being culturally responsive is a journey and not a set of rules✅How we can “read the room” and ask better questions when working with both clients and coworkers✅What is cultural competemility and how can teachers and therapists apply it to practice? In this episode, I mention the School of Clinical Leadership, my program that helps related service providers design services that support executive functioning in K-12 settings. That's right folks, it's time to talk about the artist we all love and hate and love to hate! The breast health inequities that Black women in the U.S. experience are a social imperative that calls for collective action. Black women are about 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women. To help address these inequities in Indianapolis, a group of community organizations recently came together to host a discussion about community-based resources that service breast cancer patients, to identify resource gaps and to discuss how they can work collectively to ensure Black women have access to the breast health care and support they need in their community. Lisa Hayes, the Director of Women's Health at Gennesaret Free Clinic and Executive Director of Pink-4-Ever Ending Disparities, is here today to tell us about this initiative and how this community is coming together to collectively use their resources to support the women in their area. Christians can agree that black lives (and all lives) matter, but should Christians support BLM the organization? What do they really stand for, and does it align with the Bible? On today's podcast, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie talk through the background of BLM, including the political history of the founders of the movement, as well as a few of the core tenants that they have built their organization upon. We then compare some of their views to Scripture to see where they align and where they don't. We hope this is a helpful discussion that will better help any listeners to discern who and what they should be supporting. The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. With today being Martin Luther King Jr. day, the topic of today's episode aligns perfectly. We talked last week about morning meeting and how it's a designated time to take in new information and build classroom community. Keeping those ideas in mind, I'm sharing ways to use morning meeting as a way to support black history. In order to expose your students to and support black history, I've come up with 4 simple ways you can embed this information during morning meeting. Each idea is both meaningful and beneficial, that provide opportunities for learning and discussion amongst your students. Although I mention morning meeting throughout the episode, you can discuss these ideas any time you have available throughout your day. Whether your students are exploring famous people, events, or profound words spoken, they're gaining a deeper understanding of the importance to support black history. Have you ever heard of the saying “When it rains it pours”? Well, Kayne has been in a monsoon because the waters are coming every which way. Talented but controversial, Ye has been in the spotlight for a lot of good, but also a lot of bad. It seems lately, now more than ever, he's been on a downward spiral to rock bottom. In a matter of hours & days, Kanye went from being valued at over a Billion $'s to losing much of it when he went on a public rant on how he could say anything he wanted and there would be no consequences for it. Well, the Antisemitic comments were truly the straw that broke the camel's back and the flood gates opened. Dropped left & right, by some of the biggest brands in the world, Ye is now on the outside looking in. We're gonna get into some of the things he's been doing, why he's been doing them, and what we think would be an effective solution for him moving forward.Midterms are coming up!
