Have a Social 4th of July! (Let's talk about socializing and planning as a QPOC LGBTQ+ person). NO DRAMA for me here. I'm not mad. I'm planning on coping with what comes my way. Here is how I'm viewing things. People. Events. Adjustments. Flexibility. Fun. Sleep. Rest. And recovery. Harnessing my energy to be able and available and ready to connect with friends and catch up and have some authentic time together. Some time will be fun. Some will be party mode. Some will be frustrating. It's fine to get frustrated or even angry but I'm seeing how important it is to keep reflecting and tuning in to myself. Here's how I'm doing that!

A panel featuring four of Nia King's favorite artists: Sawyer Lovett, Joe Hatton, Vo Vo, and Cristy C. Road. Zines played a crucial role in reducing social isolation for many of us, whether we were one of the only punks of color in our scene (Nia in Boston, Joe in the Dakotas, and Vo in Sydney, Australia), or the only gay in our rural Virginia town (Sawyer). Cristy C. Road discusses growing up in Miami's predominantly Black and brown punk scene and using zines to process heartbreak and trauma. Part of surviving the world as a marginalized person is about always being attuned to how people who don't have your identities might view you or feel about you at any given moment. And so the first thing lost as marginalized people is the understanding of what they even want and what it means to actually show up on their own terms and not in a constant reflection of how the world views them. This week, on episode 26 of Cosmic RX Radio Madi Murphy and Meera Mohan-Graham share how as an anti-oppression coach she works to help marginalized people take up space and show up on their own terms
Welcome back to the podcast that, “has never for once in our lives been able to think straight”. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the 2008 romantic drama I Can't Think Straight, based on the novel by the same name, for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. Although this film was released in 2008, it remains one of the few lesbian movies with diverse QPOC representation. The story centers around the relationship between Tala, a Christian Palestinian woman from Jordan, and Leyla, a British Indian Muslim woman living in London. Tala is in the midst of her fourth engagement to some irrelevant man and working in London when she meets Leyla and loses all ability to think straight. In true lesbian fashion, their eyes meet once at Tala's engagement party and the rest is history. These two women have incredible chemistry together and it is impossible not to root for them from that very first glance. Tala is bold in her pursuit of baby gay Leyla, inviting her on a weekend getaway for just the two of them and slyly booking a room with only one bed. After sleeping together literally once, Leyla's whole world tilts on its axis and she comes out to her extremely homophobic mother. Tala, however, chooses to remain closeted, causing Leyla to break up with her. But don't worry. After all, this would not be a Lez-ssential if the story ended there. After the breakup, Leyla gets a new girlfriend (but really we all know how rebounds go) and achieves her dream of becoming a published author. Meanwhile, Tala breaks off her engagement (again), comes out to her parents (who really should have known after that many failed engagements to forgettable men), and in classic rom com style, writes Leyla a poem. She then attends Leyla's book signing and our lesbians finally get the happy ending they deserve. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on I Can't Think Straight, “Waves”, written by Leigh Holmes Foster and produced by Ellie Brigida. *SPOILER ALERT at the very start talking about the Netflix Whitney Houston Movie.
Born out of Director Sharon Lewis's own muted struggle with not fitting into neat racial/Queer/Christian boxes, With Wonder takes an intimate look at the journey of members of the Queer, Christian community of colour and their attempts to answer the question: Can you be both Christian and Queer? This feature length documentary, features the diverse stories of several members of the LGBTQI+ community, including high profile queer activists and Queer clerics, in places like Jamaica, New York, London, and Los Angeles. They each have their own unique ways of amplifying their voices and finding their way back to spiritual health, despite the shaming tactics of some Christian institutions. With Wonder is a love letter to God from the LGBTQI+ community of colour. Heartfelt and honest, With Wonder delves into what for some might be uncomfortable conversations. In this episode, I sit down with Courtney Panchan, Distribution Manager of Black Market Releasing (the film company releasing With Wonder) to talk about how the QPOC people in the film came to terms and come out the other side, living their truth with the power of who they are and still serving God and how they can champion youth across Canada & the US who are looking to be accepted for their truth.

The Intersection: Diverse Folx Converse Season 2, Episode 10 with our special episode with Bennett Kaspar-Williams, "Making Trans Positive Media: Bringing Our Personal Lives to Work and the Screen." About a year ago, Netflix, one of the leading streaming media companies, destroyed its employee-first work culture policy and produced transphobic content. Both of which caused a mass exodus of some top talent, the distrust of their audiences, and the company's stock to tank. Media and tech companies had looked up to Netflix for its non-hierarchical business model, cutting-edge content, and commitment to an almost idyllic transparency with their employees. What happened? One glaring problem was producing transphobic content that could fuel an already volatile situation for trans people. The fact that Netflix decided to go back on its word to consider its employees' voices. And failed to include the Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) that have been assembled previously to maintain the integrity of their values and content. And to support and protect their communities. Earlier this year, I met Bennett Kaspar-Williams, labor relations and inclusivity, and we started to work on "Making Trans Positive Media: Bringing Our Personal Lives to Work and the Screen." Bennett was at the center of the Netflix walkouts over transphobic content, the most public being Dave Chappelle's The Closer. He also served as vice president of the Netflix trans ERG and Chair for the Trans* Content Review Pod. Bennett now works at Amazon Studios, where he is starting a new trans ERG among other projects. Our intersection rests between trans positive media and labor relations, especially of trans employees. Especially when we are talking about a media company who needed to do better in both of these regards to better represent and support the trans community. At work and on the screen.

In this episode of The Intersection, I sat down with Founder of Black Remote She, Jasmine Jacobs to talk all about how to work to live and not live to work. Specifically focused on how Black professionals specifically can navigate corporate and other organizations for job searches without compromising their values. And while looking at remote work or hybrid at office/remote work. We discuss the origin story of Black Remote She specifically from Jasmine's experience and how they created the organization from a real need for themselves, their YouTube followers, and eventually their clients to take back control of their careers, opportunities, wellness, and their image. We speak about Black representation and some about brown representation and how Black Remote She is putting queer Black folks, darker-skinned, gender non-conforming, trans Black folks, and those with disabilities in the forefront. Because we often don't see these representations within professional platforms. This was such a delightful conversation about representation, how to find agency within the working world, and how to find wellness and life-work balance. Because career alignment isn't just about who you are when you're at the job. It's also about how one's treated, regarded as a Black employee or manager, and how one is able to be a whole person.
