Dust off your pagers and grab a Surge soda! This week, Dave and Rob are hopping into the time machine and dialing the coordinates to June 9th, 1996. The box office was dominated by Mission: Impossible, the Macarena was slowly taking over the planet, and the Billboard Hot 100 was a wild mix of legendary hip-hop, R&B royalty, alt-rock, and powerhouse vocalists What makes this specific week so legendary is the sheer, whiplash-inducing sonic contrast sharing real estate on the charts. It was a bizarre and beautiful era where the mournful, rapid-fire hip-hop harmonies of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and 2Pac's aggressive West Coast swagger sat side-by-side with the pristine, sweeping adult contemporary ballads of Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. Throw in the raw acoustic storytelling of Tracy Chapman, Alanis Morissette's alt-rock bite, and a rising, inescapable bilingual novelty dance craze like the Macarena, and you get a snapshot of a musical landscape that was wildly fragmented yet universally massive   Chapters 00:00 - Pagers, Surge, and the Macarena: Welcome to 1996 2:10 - Remembering Peabo Bryson and Our Influencer Status 4:07 - Graduating into 1996's Wildly Fragmented Music Scene 9:22 - Diving Into the Billboard Hot 100: Cuts & Honorable Mentions 13:15 - "5:00" by Nonchalant: A 90s Hip Hop Gem 18:36 - "Sweet Dreams" by La Bouche: Eurodance 1996 22:11 - "Tres Delinquentes": West Coast Latin Rap's Breakthrough 26:37 - "Old Man and Me": Hootie's Underrated Sophomore Album 30:25 - Kicking Off our Best of 1996 Billboard Top 10 31:27 - Everclear's "Heart Spark Dollar Sign": An Interracial Love Story 35:00 - Coolio's "1,2,3,4": A Fun Summer Jam 38:57 - Dishwalla's "Counting Blue Cars": Mid-90s Post Grunge Classic 42:36 - Garbage's "Only Happy When It Rains": A 90s Rock Anthem 46:25 - Lenny Kravitz's "Can't Get You Off My Mind" 49:52 - Goo Goo Dolls "Name": A Chart-Topping Personal Ballad 57:13 - Brandy's "Sittin' Up In My Room": A Teen Infatuation Anthem 59:50 - The Tony Rich Project's "Nobody Knows": Country Crossover Hit 1:05:12 - Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason": A Bluesy Career Revitalizer 1:08:04 - Smashing Pumpkins' "1979": The Quintessential Gen X Song 1:10:08 - Snapple, Clearly Canadian, and Our 1996 Billboard List Review   Playlists: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IEysWlUdIzxLhnrSmu1bx?si=DVgK8cegRq-FqwVtoZGlqQ  Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/billboard-hot-100-june-9th-1996/pl.u-76oN9NpFNz2Y05?ls Amazon: Click HERE to access the Amazon playlist for this episode   https://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100/1996-06-15/   Connect with Totally 80s and 90s Recall  Website: https://bleav.com/shows/totally-80s-and-90s-recall/  Email: 80s90srecall@gmail.com  Voicemail: (509) 426-4542  Linktree: https://linktr.ee/80s90srecall Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. A money mark is someone with a lot of money who runs a wrestling show or starts a promotion because they want to be one of the boys and be a big shot in the wrestling biz. It's not a good thing to be, either because you won't have the wrestlers' respect or you'll blow all your money and fail spectacularly. Typically both. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest Rich Latta (One Nation Radio) play a selection of songs about money and all the tropes and themes associated with it. Artists played include ZZ Top, Jay-Z, Tower of Power, Madonna, Camp Lo, Fitz and the Tantrums, Rick Ross, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Charley Crockett, and many more. Episode 377: THE STEREOTYPES "Crafting Life Saver Hits For Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber" This week on @RoadPodcast features an in-depth conversation with The @StereotypesTV (@JonYip + @JermBeats + @RayRomulus), charting their rise from interns and studio rats to Grammy-winning producers behind era-defining records. Crooked opens by giving them their flowers as true DJ “life savers,” praising their ability to balance vibe, storytelling, and music that unites people in the middle (02:33), before Ray reflects on growing up in New York, interning at Bad Boy and Def Jam, and learning the industry from the ground up (05:23). The trio breaks down how they first connected, their wide-ranging influences from the Bay to Snoop, Dre, Bone Thugs, Premier, and Teddy Riley, and the moments that permanently shifted their musical perspective, including hearing Busta Rhymes' “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” (17:20). They tell the full story of “Damage” by Danity Kane, from ballad to hit, including seeing it on Making The Band and hearing it play at Guitar Center while they were still broke (35:26). The conversation moves into their relationship with Far East Movement and Bruno Mars, leading to a detailed breakdown of 24K Magic, Finesse, and the writing process behind records like “That's What I Like” and “Chunky,” plus how adding Cardi B turned “Finesse” into a mega hit (44:30). They also touch on uncredited work, publishing lessons, career slowdowns, and behind-the-scenes realities, from studio grind to IRS stress and finally winning Grammys after years in the trenches (1:04:55). The episode closes with optimism about new music, future collaborations, and why 2026 is shaping up to be a special year (1:34:01). I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa 1999 Eternal is the second album by American hip-hop group Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, released July 25, 1995, on Ruthless Records. The album was released four months after the death of gangsta rapper Eazy-E, the group's mentor and the executive producer of the album. Both the album and single "Tha Crossroads" are dedicated to him. Following up on the surprise success of their breakthrough single "Thuggish Ruggish Bone", it became a popular album and received positive reviews from music critics, earning praise for the group's melodic rapping style. The album title is a portmanteau of Cleveland's eastside neighborhood centering on East 99th Street and St. Clair Avenue where the group is based and the then-future year 1999. Taylor Swift: The End of an Era is a 2025 American documentary miniseries about the singer-songwriter Taylor Swift's sixth concert tour, the Eras Tour (2023–2024), directed by filmmakers Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce. The series consists of six episodes that follow the lives of Swift and her crew during the tour. It began streaming on Disney+ on December 12, 2025.   Raise the Red Lantern is a 1991 period drama film directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Gong Li. It is an adaptation by Ni Zhen of the 1990 novella Raise the Red Lantern (originally Wives and Concubines) by Su Tong. A Chinese-Hong Kong co-production, the film was later adapted into a ballet of the same title by the National Ballet of China, also directed by Zhang. Set during the Warlord Era in the 1920s, the film tells the story of a young woman who becomes the fourth wife of a wealthy man. It was the fourth of nine collaborations between Zhang and Gong.

This week we keep things intentionally low-effort and high-chaos by drafting the Billboard year-end #1 songs from 1980 through 1999. We each build a ten-song playlist from a shared pool, knowing that once a song is picked, it's gone forever. Along the way we uncover timeless masterpieces, generational blind spots, slow-dance trauma, and more than a few baffling chart decisions. By the end, it's less about “best songs of all time” and more about what pop culture we survived — and what it says about the decades that made us.Cold Open & Life UpdatesEden survives Iowa weather whiplash, including snowmelt, wind advisories, and dogs who refuse to come inside. We check in on end-of-year fatigue, weddings on the horizon, and the general desire to just get to January. What We've Been Checking OutEden scores a surprise manga haul via Reddit, including:Kase-san and… — a quiet, funny, wholesome romance that desperately wants its characters to communicate.Chainsmoker Cat — gross, chaotic, and deeply committed to depicting the world's worst anthropomorphic cat girl.Continued time in Where Winds Meet, including discovering that joining the “hot evil people” sect requires in-game marriage… followed by divorce.Peter continues slowly working through The Three-Body Problem and Gödel, Escher, Bach.A brief dive into habit-building via the new Atomic Habits workbook.Music check-in includes Archspire's new single “Carrion Ladder” and the eternal joy of Apple Music Replay actually getting things right.Gaming includes Ball Pit, Megabonk, and the looming temptation of finally committing to Baldur's Gate 3.The Main Event: Billboard #1 Draft (1980–1999)We draft songs snake-style, locking each other out as we go.Early rounds are stacked with undeniable classics:Whitney Houston's “I Will Always Love You”Prince's “When Doves Cry”Blondie's “Call Me”Cher's “Believe”George Michael emerges as an '80s powerhouse with multiple entries. The generational divide shows up fast:Peter leans heavily '80s.Eden lives firmly in the '90s (for better and worse). We acknowledge slow-dance staples that were emotionally formative whether we liked them or not.The middle rounds reveal just how strange pop history can be when viewed year-by-year.By the later picks, we're openly throwing ourselves on grenades:The Macarena is drafted out of mercy.Multiple songs are chosen purely because something has to be.We question how certain cultural touchstones (My Heart Will Go On, Aaliyah, Bone Thugs) somehow missed the top spot in their years.Big TakeawaysBillboard #1 does not mean “best song.”The '80s age better than the '90s in pop memory (and fashion).Nostalgia is selective, and pop charts are cruel.Drafting music is a great way to discover what you genuinely love — and what you merely survived.

This recording plays in three acts, the first bit is all mowing, then mostly pool aerator and birds, then a curtain of night insects descend. The kids are back in school, and our local department store has already put up Jack-o'-lanterns. Summer is over — dead. I found eggnog at the grocery store. The bugs you hear are just one frost from calling it an existence. It's time to recapture the sounds of late summer (to maybe revisit during hollow, depressing February).I can say it was exactly a year ago if it's been 364 days, right? What's one day between friends? I'm sure Neil deGrasse Tyson would be like, “Well, wait a minute…” But he's not a friend. I don't even know him.So — exactly, precisely, literally one year ago — I published the first A Dying Summer's Suburban Slumber, an audio portrait of late summer bugs and hums in a Northern Virginia backyard (complete with manmade sounds like cars and the low buzz of an Applebee's sign in the distance). One year ago today (in the strictest possible sense), we bring you the sequel — this time from the Buckeye State, land of Cornhenge, the Wright brothers, and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. #OhioSpecial thanks to the folks who let us record from their backyard — and to regular contributor Dr. April for capturing the sounds.

Send us a textLAFC and Carson played for the 26th time on Saturday, and this one, for Black and Gold Faithful, may have been the most frustrating yet. Despite twice holding a 2-goal lead, LAFC had to settle for a point in a 3-3 draw as Galaxy scored at the death.Denis Bouanga did all he could while he was on the pitch, scoring twice to move within 6 of Carlos Vela all-time. Gabriel Pec added a brace of his own, and a last-second header by Maya Yoshida forced both sides home with a point. A red card for Eddie Segura in stoppage certainly complicates matters for the home side in their next match against Portland. Also on this episode, Bone Thugs and Harmony make an appearance at BMO! Enjoy Episode 372.

And from those challenging moments, he emerged stronger and more determined than ever. Today, he leverages his personal experiences and magnetic, relatable personality to inspire others to embark on their own transformative journeys. Michael Molthan - M2 The Rock is proof that even in the darkest of times, one can find a path to fulfillment and purpose, using rock bottom as a steppingstone rather than an endpoint. Michael Molthan's mission is to raise the meaning of “Rock Bottom” sharing his relatable stories for everyone by rebuilding the “Spirit, Mind, and Body”. For over 2o years, Michael Molthan has been known as one of the most well-known Luxury Homebuilders in Dallas, Texas - The Park Cities and also in the country until 2009. Michael Molthan finally hit rock bottom. Drugs. Alcohol, and crime. And absolute chaos. He accumulated 27 mugshots in four years and was about to enter a place he swore he would never go: prison. Addiction was Michael's temporary solution to heal from a dark childhood trauma secret. Little did he know that being imprisoned and reading and writing for inmates that could not read or write. On October 13, 2017, Michael was miraculously released 2 years early from prison before completing his sentence. He traveled 300 Miles back to Dallas, Texas, to see Judge Jennifer Bennett to turn himself in. For the first time Judge Bennett could see this miraculous change that had taken place in Michael's life, so she pardoned him and told him to go “pay it forward”. That's what Michael Molthan has been doing for the last 7 years. Michael is the host of The M2 THE ROCK Show, one of the fastest growing shows/podcasts in the country that dives into the topic of self-improvement, spirituality, health, mind, and many more.
