In this enlightening episode of Sermon Brainwave, hosts Karoline Lewis, Matt Skinner, and Rolf Jacobson delve into the theological significance of the Ascension of Our Lord, which falls on May 29, 2025. The conversation explores why this often-overlooked feast day is crucial for understanding Jesus' ongoing authority and presence in the world today. The hosts discuss how the Ascension serves as the pivotal bridge between Luke and Acts, connecting Jesus' earthly ministry to the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and its importance for Trinitarian theology. Drawing from the lectionary texts (Acts 1:1-11, Psalm 47, Ephesians 1:15-23, and Luke 24:44-53), the hosts unpack how the Ascension of Our Lord is not merely about Jesus' location but about his authority and power. They explore the connection between Christ's ascension and the church's mission, explaining that Jesus' enthronement isn't about distant rule but about his continued embodied presence and activity through the Spirit. This episode offers valuable insights for preachers and teachers seeking to communicate the relevance and importance of the Ascension in contemporary Christian faith. *  *  * Don't forget to like, subscribe, and share to stay connected with more insightful lectionary discussions! The Catechism unpacks the line from the Creed, “He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.” Fr. Mike highlights the reality that we do not have direct access to the Father without his Son, Jesus. Christ's ascension into heaven means, “the irreversible entry of his humanity into divine glory,” uniting our humanity with God's divinity in a remarkable way—which finds its earthly culmination in the Holy Mass. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” So he told them this parable: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.' Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. “Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.' Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.' And he divided his property between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”' And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to celebrate. 1. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.' So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?' They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.' And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.' And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.' But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?' So the last will be first, and the first last.” 1. God is gracious to all 2. "God is renowned in Judah; in Israel his name is great...There he broke the flashing arrows, the shields and the swords, the weapons of war” (Psalm 76:1,3). Christians continually return to the psalms to help us express both our praise and our anxiety. Through these songs, we give voice to our joy and our pain. Yet the psalms have a larger purpose then helping us shape our response to God. He uses them to shape us, especially our understanding of the world and history. John Calvin once wrote that we find the entire gospel in the psalms. Psalm 76 shapes our understanding of the gospel in the age of Pentecost, that is, the age of the Holy Spirit between Christ's ascension and his return. Set in the context of Israelite worship, this Psalm speaks about God going out from Israel as a conquering warrior. As Christians, we generally understand ourselves as the new Israel, the people of God today. So, wherever the church is, God goes out in judgement. But what does that mean? Should we use this violent language in our worship today? Let us consider several things. First, this is poetic language that describes the violent evil of our world. It may be difficult for us, 'civilized' citizens of the western world to understand this. But go to the war-torn places of the world and see the results of evil acts: millions of people huddled in refugee camps, thousands of hectares of crops burned, villages looted and destroyed, old men and boys killed, youth recruited as labourers and soldiers, women and girls raped. Spend a month with a single mother, with two children in a single bedroom basement apartment, trying to hold down a minimum wage job, keep food on the table, her children in school and adequately clothed for a Canadian winter. Suddenly, a God who comes roaring in judgement and restoration sounds like a very welcome sound. Second, these psalms are part of communal worship. In that holy place, God dwells with His people and purges away our alien loyalties and our despair. Such worship is meant to be intense and cathartic so that we see reality more clearly. We see God in judgement of the persecutors and exalting the persecuted to a new, glorious existence. Everything is turned into praise. Thirdly, the reality of divine judgement invites the worshippers to commit themselves to a counterculture world view. Since we believe that God will come to set right the horrible evils of human existence, we commit ourselves to live in righteousness today. Even while all around us, people pursue a life of self interest, stepping on others to get ahead, worshippers of God seek to live justly, to do good to our enemies, overing evil with good (Romans 12:21), to have mercy on each neighbour God sends our way (Luke 10:37). The age of Pentecost, between Jesus Ascension and His return in glory, is an age of warfare. As Paul says, Christ must reign until all His enemies are a footstool under his feet. That is the age we live in. Psalm 76 is a poetic expression of this age, which we read through the lens of Ephesians 6: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (12). And there is also this, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

READ: Acts 2.1-4 NLT 'On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.' Pentecost Sunday marks the birthday of the church. Jesus had asked his followers to wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit – and now he has arrived. Pentecost was a Jewish harvest festival and was held fifty days after Passover. It was one of the three annual pilgrimage festivals and so Jerusalem would have been heaving with pilgrims from all over the region. The group of Jesus’ followers was probably gathered in the upper room where they had been in the habit of meeting. One can imagine them meeting quietly and prayerfully as they had done since the time of Jesus’ Ascension. But then suddenly everything changed as they were overwhelmed by the wind of the Spirit. A completely new era had just begun and it was marked by wind and fire. The violent wind filled the whole house symbolising the wind of life that the Holy Spirit brings. No one could miss the fact that something dramatic was taking place, and the tongues of fire which rested on each of them spoke of the cleansing and refining work of the Spirit. As the Holy Spirit came upon them, they spoke in other tongues as they worshipped God together. What an incredible moment this was. Our experience of the Holy Spirit might be very different from this, but we should be encouraged that he is the same Spirit and his desire is to blow his breath of life into us today, and to refine us with his fire. One thing that the Holy Spirit never does is to leave things the way they are. He is constantly challenging, renewing and purifying us as we worship God together. QUESTIONS: In what ways have you experienced the wind and fire of the Holy Spirit? PRAYER: God our Father, thank you for sending us your Holy Spirit. Help us to welcome him today, so that we may become more like Jesus. Amen

They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.' The days between Jesus’ Ascension and Pentecost were filled with prayer. All the disciples knew was that they had to wait and they didn’t want to do this alone. We read that they met together in an upper room and this may well have been the place where they had gathered for the Last Supper. What matters is that they were together and it is interesting to note that the eleven disciples were joined by Jesus’ mother and his brothers. We know little about Jesus’ brothers but John records that, prior to his death, they did not believe in him (John 7.5). What an amazing time of prayer that must have been! Jesus had told them that the Holy Spirit would be poured out on them, but hadn’t informed them when this might happen. They simply had to wait in expectation, with the confidence of knowing that God had a perfect plan. In one sense prayer is always like this. Although we live in the privileged days of the Spirit, whenever we come together to pray there is much that we do not know. We only partly know God’s plans for our lives, our church and our world. As we pray we open ourselves afresh to the breath of God’s Spirit and invite him to meet with us. It’s also vital for us to see the importance of praying together. Prayer is the privilege of every Christian and we will often pray by ourselves. But there is something very important about praying with our Christian brothers and sisters. Jesus said, “For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.” Matthew 18.20 As we pray together the risen Lord Jesus Christ stands with us, strengthening and inspiring us. What could be more exciting than that?! QUESTIONS: Why is waiting so important in our Christian lives? PRAYER: Gracious Lord, teach me more about the importance of expectant prayer, and help me to treasure the opportunities you give me to pray with my Christian brothers and sisters. Amen

In this episode Anna talks about all of the things to do with Jesus leaving the earth and going back to Heaven. Jesus Ascension refers to Jesus going up to heaven and the definition of ‘ascend' go up or climb OR rise or move up through the air.  What were Jesus' last words here on earth and why were they so important? Matthew 28:16-20 Jesus' eleven disciples went to a mountain in Galilee, where Jesus had told them to meet him. 17 They saw him and worshiped him, but some of them doubted. Jesus came to them and said: “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth! 19 Go to the people of all nations and make them my disciples. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, 20 and teach them to do everything I have told you. I will be with you always, even until the end of the world.” Read Acts 1:3-11 This awesome passage explains exactly how Jesus went to Heaven. Discussion Questions: How would you feel if you were one of the disciples watching Jesus float up into the sky? If you knew that you were going to die soon, what would be the last thing that you would say and to whom? Do you remember what Jesus' last words were? Why would Jesus choose those things as his final words? Do you have any questions that you would like answered in an upcoming episode? Please ask away, contact details below!
