Daily Anglican Prayer - Sunday Evening – 15th September 2024 Readings: Psalm 116; Esther 2. 18 – 3.6; Mark 9. 2-13. Led by Felicity Scott, a Liturgical Assistant for the Anglican Church QLD, Australia. The full prayer transcript is available by going to this episode on the Podcast website. https://dailyprayeranglicanprayerbookforaustralia.podbean.com Welcome to Sunday Evening prayer from the Anglican ‘A prayer book for Australia'. We proclaim the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ: GOD in his infinite mercy, forgives all sins, and through our baptism in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, we are given a rebirth into new life, free from the burden of all sin. ALLELUIA With faithfulness we respond to the good news: We acknowledge Christ as our saviour and accept with gratitude, that we are forgiven for all wrong doings, past and present. To honour the gift of forgiveness, we release our burden of guilt and rise up to live in the glory of God forever more. Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever. Let us Pray. 1 Grace, mercy and peace, from God the Father, and Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Timothy 1.2 Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit: as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen. 2 The Opening Canticle, The Praise of God's Servants Come now, praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord: you that stand by night in the house of the Lord. Lift up your hands in the holy place and praise the Lord: May the Lord bless you from Zion, the Lord who made heaven and earth. Psalm 134 3 The Opening Prayer The day is now past and the night is at hand. Let us pray with one heart and mind. Silence may be kept. Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen. 4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each. Psalm 5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow Lord of life, by the power of your resurrection, deliver us from all selfishness and bring us to the fullness of your joy; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. 6 Bible Readings. 1st Reading Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 2nd Reading Hear the message of Christ. Thanks be to God. 7 The Canticle, The Song of Mary (Magnificat) My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord: my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant: from this day all generations will call me blessed; The Almighty has done great things for me: and holy is his name. God has mercy on those who fear him: from generation to generation. The Lord has shown strength with his arm: and scattered the proud in their conceit, Casting down the mighty from their thrones: and lifting up the lowly. God has filled the hungry with good things: and sent the rich away empty. He has come to the aid of his servant Israel: to remember the promise of mercy, The promise made to our forebears: to Abraham and his children for ever. Luke 1.47–55 8 The belief and principle is said I believe in God, creator of heaven and earth, whose love and merciful forgiveness endures everlasting. I believe in Christ the saviour, whose example of love and compassion, taught us a restored way to live, in collaborative unity with all people. I believe in the Holy Spirit, whose divine guidance brings us together to be one with the Holy Trinity. 9 The Prayers Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. God have mercy. 10 The Lord's Prayer and the Collect of the Day Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Mark 16:15-20 Jesus said to his disciples: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.

Audio recordingSermon manuscript:If you could have anything you wanted, what would it be? Maybe some of you remember a commercial for the powerball lottery. In the commercial different people catch the powerball, which had lightning coming from it if I remember correctly. With that powerball in hand they could point to their regular looking house, and they'd have a mansion. They could point to their regular looking car, and they'd have a Ferrari. If you won the lottery, then you could buy a lot of stuff you can't afford now. Would that get you what you want? Winning the lottery, however, is not very likely. That commercial was a bit fanciful. In “real life” you have to keep your goals reasonable. Since we are so used to living “real life,” it is easy to manage our expectations too thoroughly so that we don't even begin to grasp the meaning of Christ's ascension. We get so used thinking we can't have everything we want—that's fairy tale stuff—that we don't believe in what the ascension means. The ascension means that Jesus is Lord. All rule and authority and power and dominion have been put under his feet. The inheritance we will receive from God because of Jesus is beyond our imagination. Paul says, “No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the imagination of the heart of man, what God has prepared for those who love him.” Although we can't fully grasp what God has prepared for us, it is important to try. If we don't try, then we won't get it. At best our imaginations will be limited to those powerball kinds of wishes, and those powerball kinds of wishes are not high enough. Eben the highest kind of wishes that you might have with the lottery aren't high enough. Suppose there would be some kind of lottery that would enable you to suck up every last cent and every last piece of property on this earth. All other human beings become your slaves. Nothing happens without your say-so. Even after winning this lottery so that you are some kind of god on this earth—that would not be good enough. To try to grasp our inheritance we must think higher. We must think about God. There are many things we could think about with God, and they would all be good, but tonight I'll limit myself to just a couple things: life and love. We'll begin by talking about life. Life comes from God. God is the creator. From the smallest thing to the largest thing—all things come from him. We might wonder at the power of the sun, the vastness of the universe—these things come from God. On a more personal level, we all have a craving for life, because whenever we have tasted it we have so thoroughly enjoyed it. Another word for enjoying life is fun. Fun comes in different shapes and forms that vary with each person. One has fun with his or her mind. Another has fun with his or her heart. Another has fun with his or her accomplishments. Romance, friends, laughter, fear, pity, weeping—these are all interesting facets of life. People want to live rather than die because life is good. Life comes from God. Love, also, comes from God. John in his epistle even goes so far as to say that “God is love.” Love draws people together so that they are one. Giving love is reaching out to bring in the other. Receiving love is when you have been accepted and brought in. We all know by experience how good this is. We also know by experience how bad the opposite of this is. We have all experienced rejection: “No, you aren't one with us.” Think of how this happens with children. Second, third, fourth grade—all of a sudden there are in-groups and out-groups. The in group is to be loved and admired. The out group is lesser and are given to know this by being shunned or mocked. The kids get shuffled and sorted, usually on the basis of things that they have no control over. Kids are just like us. They want to be recognized and admired. To be reviled and humiliated is painful. What can be done about this? It's unbelievable how common it is for people to believe that nothing can be done. People are just like that. There's no other choice but to accept it. It's along the same lines as winning the lottery. It is very unlikely that you are going to win the lottery, and so you must adjust your expectations accordingly. We live in the midst of so much that negates life and negates love, and the best that our smartest people can do is to throw up their hands and say, “So it goes.” This defeatist, despairing philosophy is as powerful as it is unchristian. Despair is the opposite of faith and hope. To say that everything is just going to stay the same is a denial of Easter. It is a denial of Christ's ascension to the right hand of God the Father. I began tonight by asking, “If you could have anything you wanted, what would it be?” We don't take that question seriously. What if we did? You can have anything you want. That's actually the meaning of Easter and the Ascension. You can have anything you want. There's a catch, of course, although it's not really catch. You can't wish to suck up every last cent and every last piece of property so that all people are enslaved to you and you sit atop the world as though you were some kind of god. God's not going to feed you hog slop like that. Hog slop like that is reserved for the hogs. Nor is God going to make it so that you are better than everyone else, so that you can be worshipped with all of your magnificence. But if you want good things—high things that have to do with life and love and all of the other marvelous attributes of God—if you want good things, then you can have anything you want. Jesus said, “I came so that you may have life and have it more abundantly.” Again Jesus said, “I have spoken these things that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” Whatever you want is yours. It's just a matter of time. Maybe we will not have as much life and love and other divine things in this life as we would like, but that might be because we have not prayed for them like we should. But even in the worst case scenario, the maximum we will have to endure is probably 80 years. Most of us are much further along than that. Then we will have whatever we want, and what we will want will only be the good and high things instead of the gross and ugly things. Such is the power of our Lord Jesus Christ that is put on display with his resurrection from the dead and his ascension into heaven. Jesus's power is certainly a theme tonight with all of our worship. We have already sung, “Look ye saint the sight is glorious.” We've sung, “This is the feast of victory for our God.” We'll thank God for Jesus's ascension before receiving the Lord's Supper. We'll sing some rousing hymns about about crowns and glory during the distribution. These songs of praise are fitting for the Ascension of our Lord. Jesus is more powerful than everything and everyone except God the Father. The rulers and authorities and powers and dominions would have us believe life is just the way it is, and we have to accept it. They are wrong. They are dead wrong. Things don't have to stay the way they are. Things can't stay the way they are. Jesus is risen from the dead. Jesus reigns and rules at the right hand of God the Father. You are on the winning team. You are baptized into Christ. When Jesus comes again you will be caught up into the air to live with him. Whatever you want will be yours, and only those things that are good will you want. This is good news.
I wonder if we think that Jesus' ministry is over until he returns in his glory? We might think that Jesus worked hard during his thirty-three years on the earth, so he is enjoying a well-deserved rest. That, of course, is far from the truth. Jesus did not ascend into heaven so that he could leave the Church - he ascended so he could lead the Church. Just as his death and resurrection were central, so is his Ascension and his future return. The Ascension is a reminder that the victory of the gospel is secure. His future return informs us that all is not fully realized, that there is still work for us to do. Another important fact that we can draw from the Ascension is that our bodies matter. We know this precisely because of the effort Jesus made after his Resurrection in proving to the apostles that he was not a ghost. He said: “Look at my hands and feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.” (Lk 24:39) The fact that Jesus retained the wounds on his body proves to us that our efforts in sharing the life of the gospel will require sacrifice. Our bodily and physical presence is important, not merely our spiritual understanding. Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we offer God all that have; body, soul, and spirit, safeguarding the precious gift of God within. Jesus is now standing at the right hand of the Father. He may have lingered for some days and weeks after his resurrection, but he is not lingering now. He has joined the wondrous Trinitarian circle once more, the same circle of love from which his humanity issued forth. Just as Jesus' presence at God's right hand strengthened the early members of the Church in their persecution and suffering, so we have the confidence that Jesus is still in charge. He is the main celebrant of every Mass we attend, he is inspiration of every prayer we say. We live that hope. Jesus Christ is watching over us now and forever. The Ascension promises that Jesus will finish everything he has promised. That is Good News, indeed. Alleluia, Alleluia. Blessings, Fr. Kevin MacDonald, C.Ss.R.

Our Mothers Knew It with Maria EckersleyA Creative Study of Come, Follow MeBook of Mormon [MOSIAH 7-10] Insights“In the Strength of the Lord”May 6 - May 12, 2024WEEK 19: SUMMARY=================Lesson Summary:This week's study spans several decades, and we find out what happened to Zeniff's group after they left Zarahemla for the land of Nephi. We'll study the incredible motives of Ammon, a descendant of Zarahemla, as well as the humility of Limhi, who gratefully accepts his help. We'll also go back in time to read Zeniff's record. His words will teach us about the slippery slope to bondage and the risks of being over-zealous. However, the overarching message of the Savior's deliverance runs through each chapter.Questions to Consider:MOSIAH 7:15 | These seem to be counterpoints to Benjamin's description of his rule. Are there other contrasts that Zeniff might appreciate?MOSIAH 7:25 | Why is fallen a good word choice here? It's almost like the “natural man” is susceptible to the cosmic gravity of the world without GodMOSIAH 7:18-19 | How can you genuinely rejoice in the hope of deliverance? What does this combination of assured deliverance and effectual struggle teach us about Heavenly Father's plan? What does verse 33 of chapter 7 add to this idea?CHAPTERS=========00:00:13 INSIGHTS INTRODUCTION00:06:41 SPARK 1: THE OTHER AMMON00:15:16 SPARK 2: THE BEST INTENTIONS00:26:26 SPARK 3: THE OVER ZEALOUS PRODIGAL00:35:55 QUESTIONS00:40:49 WRAP UPLINKS=====ETSY Printables: https://meckmom.etsy.comWEB: https://www.gather.meckmom.comINSTAGRAM: Instagram @meckmomlifePODCAST: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST DISCLAIMER=================================This podcast represents my own thoughts and opinions. Sunday Evening Daily Anglican Prayer - Sunday Evening 28th April 2024 Readings: Psalm 98; 1 John 4. 1-8; Led by Felicity Scott, a Liturgical Assistant at St John the Baptist Anglican Church Bulimba, QLD, Australia. Amen. 6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed. 1st Reading – No reading 2nd Reading 1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. 2He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. 3You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. 4Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or May your word live in us and bear much fruit to your glory. A short homily Our Lord so often uses images that are so directly understood by his listeners this time he uses that of the vine and the vinedresser. Again most of the people in his time would have either had a vine or two in the backyard or perhaps worked for someone who had a lot more. I don't have a green thumb but those who do tell me that when you're pruning you've got to be careful as you prune to make sure that it's a clean cut and that in fact the growth that happens after a pruning in fact is a direct survival attempt on behalf of the plant to just live, it feels like it's an attack on it and then all the extra nutrients are sent into that part of the plant to make it grow. The Lord uses this image and the people listening to him would have understood this very well, that if for instance the pruning doesn't get done properly, disease can set in and the plant can develop a fungus and then possibly die or at least part of it but when Jesus talks about the pruning that goes on for those who bear fruit well the image itself hurts. When we think about ourselves being pruned by God, being pruned by the heavenly father by his word by the manifold ways in which he prunes our thoughts, the way we think, maybe we enjoy the idea of pruning but the thought that I'm going to be hurt in order to bear more fruit doesn't particularly appeal to me and I don't know about you that's in fact what's necessary in order for us to keep on growing in our discipleship in Christ. That's what Jesus Christ in fact says about his teaching on the cross that we must carry the cross every day and in particularly during these 50 days of Easter season we are looking at the mystery of the cross that has led to the resurrection but we see it repeated in our lives, time and time again how our Lord also talks about the possibility of not bearing fruit. What happens to such a branch, the one who does not remain in him? They dry up and then they are cut off and thrown into the fire not something any of us really wants to consider but we should ask ourselves the question what does it mean therefore to remain in Jesus Christ? Well it's the things we already know, to engage in prayer, to reflect on his word, to allow his word to speak to us, not just to wash over our minds but to in fact percolate into our hearts so that it can convict us of truth and falsehood that is there within us. When the word finds truth inside of us then, it brings peace and consolation when it finds falsehood it makes us uncomfortable, we live in a culture that is very much about wearing fake masks, very much about keeping up a good appearance, but in fact with God this means nothing because he sees right through it all. So as we listen to these familiar words of Christ we remember that we in order to be great disciples, we must be close to him and remain united with him through Christ. Amen 7 The Canticle, The Song of Mary (Magnificat) My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord: my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant: from this day all generations will call me blessed; The Almighty has done great things for me: and holy is his name. Luke 1.47–55 8 The Apostles' Creed may be said. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 9 The Prayers Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. 10 The Lord's Prayer and the Collect of the Day Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. 10 The Collect of the Day Fifth Sunday of Easter O God, form the minds of your faithful people, that we may love what you command and desire what you promise, so that, amid the many changes of this world, our hearts may there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Prayer of the Week Fifth Sunday of Easter Saving God, who called your Church to witness that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself: help us so to proclaim the good news of your love, that all who hear it may be reconciled to you; through him who died for us and rose again and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 11 Intercessions and Thanksgivings may be made according to local custom and need. Almighty God, by your Son Jesus Christ you gave many excellent gifts to your apostles and commanded them to feed your flock. Bless all Archbishops and bishops in The Anglican Church. So fill them with your truth, and clothe them with holiness, that as pastors of your Church they may diligently preach your word, and rightly teach your people, to the glory of your name, and the benefit of your Church. God of grace: hear our prayer. God of wisdom, grant we pray that the words we have heard today make in us a desire to serve the people in bringing the good news of Christ to all who have yet to hear it, so that they may bring forth in us the fruit of good works to honour and praise your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. God of grace: hear our prayer. Saviour God, we give you thanks for restoring health to your servants who are experiencing ill health this day. We bless and praise you for the mercy which you show to us when we call upon you. Teach us to trust you in all circumstances of life and to know your loving care and protection. God of grace: hear our prayer. God of all truth, teach us to love you with Heart and mind.
