What does Pentecost teach us about being the church today? Young left a highly promising coaching career in the NBA to come to Provo, bringing invaluable professional connections with him. During a recruiting pitch, Young even pulled out his phone, called NBA superstar Kevin Durant—whom he coached in Phoenix—and handed the phone directly to Dybantsa. Young is explicitly selling recruits on his ability to get them to the NBA, cementing college sports as a professional stepping stone. Cautionary Tale of Jimmer Fredette Matt contrasts this new era of “one-and-done” recruits with the legacy of Jimmer Fredette. Bowman describes Fredette as a player built for the traditional amateur college game who was unfairly pushed into the modern “massive media industrial complex” that demands individual celebrity. Unlike Danny Ainge, who thrived by fitting into a cooperative team system and sharing the ball, Fredette was forced to carry the entire team on his back. This intense pressure to be a singular, massive celebrity ultimately did him a disservice when he reached the NBA, making him a cautionary tale of how modern sports media can chew players up. God vs. Mammon on the Hardwood: Is this massive influx of money compatible with BYU’s mission? Bowman argues there is no easy answer. On one hand, church leaders like Henry Eyring have previously expressed that a successful football team acts as a powerful missionary tool. On the other hand, the millions of dollars involved shift the focus away from the character-building, cooperative origins of the sport. Today, the game is increasingly about individual stardom and financial gain, causing significant tension with the university’s spiritual goals. Will BYU Ever Drop Athletics? Given this tension, a popular rumor suggests that future church leaders might eventually eliminate BYU’s sports programs entirely, mirroring the decision made years ago to drop athletics at Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho). However, Bowman believes this is highly unlikely. The financial momentum of BYU athletics is simply too powerful to stop. Between Big 12 television money and the sheer influence of massive donor groups—BYU’s NIL collective, the “Royal Blue,” is reportedly the second-largest in the country behind Kentucky—eliminating the sports programs would result in intense backlash from wealthy boosters. In this message from Ephesians 4:7–16, Pastor Jim explains how Jesus, the victorious and ascended King, gives gifts to his people so that the church can grow into maturity. After defeating the powers of sin and death through his life, death, and resurrection, Jim shows how Christ now distributes grace to the church through leaders who proclaim and clarify the gospel, equipping believers for works of service. The goal is not spectatorship but participation as every follower of Jesus grows beyond spiritual infancy and begins to serve as part of the body of Christ. Jim challenges listeners to move beyond gathering information about faith and instead allow the gospel to shape identity, produce transformation, and lead to active ministry in everyday life. As the church builds one another up in truth and love, believers grow toward unity, deeper knowledge of Jesus, and the fullness of maturity that reflects Christ to the world.

The moment to be here, and I will start out by telling you this, how in the world do you go from walking on your junior year a week before the season starts, your junior year at the Southern University, that's right, Ohio State, it's the Southern University. There are so many people that I could thank, teammates, coaches, mentors. There will be some I'll call, but some I just want to right now up front say thank you so much to every teammate at Arizona and every teammate in St. Louis. I could not and wouldn't be here without you. But as I sought this journey, and I don't want to sound morbid or anything like that, I want to tell you something, this is an intentional journey. I am No. 287 and because my name is the last name Williams, I am the last one in my induction class, but I also want to say thank you to the 32 owners, Roger Goodell, DeMaurice Smith of the Players Association, and here's why, because tough decisions have to be made that are unpopular, but the success and promotion and enjoyment of this game with the fans is because of the important decisions that are made that allow us to be here and celebrate with you the fans and all of these great Hall of Famers that I get an opportunity to sit up here with. I've got two statements, if you don't remember anything I say. Two statements if you don't remember anything else I say. Begin with the end in mind and die empty. Begin with the end in mind and die empty. So let me tell you about this journey. It all starts at home. And I wouldn't be and could not be without the foundation. See I've heard a lot of speeches, I've listened to them, believe me. But I want to tell you it starts with Lawrence and Lillian Williams in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mom and Dad, I need you all to stand up. Dad is up here as a presenter, my mother is seated there. Now these Hall of Famers and all, they've all been voting on who is going to cry. Now you know that two of the guys, my first two haven't cried. Now I'm going to cry. I'll be you up front, I'll give you notice. I think it was General Schwarzkopf, in an interview with Barbara Walters, and Barbara Walters said, “a big general like you, are you going to cry? General Schwarzkopf said I'm afraid of a man that won't cry.” To the dais with the induction, being in an induction class with the first punter. I've been seeing all these guys that lift their legs for a living around Canton, Ray Guy. Also to be in an induction class with three from the Historical Black Colleges. Michael Strahan, Texas Southern, Claude Humphrey, Tennessee State, and that's right, yours truly, the Southern University. Now let me begin to give thanks where thanks is due. I never had to look outside my home for role models. My two older brothers, Malcolm Williams, Achilles Williams, stand to your feet, brothers. I love this topic. I've not found anyone else who talks about it. We've all met missions junkies. You probably have at least one in your church. They are people who love to talk about missions, love it when people pay for them to go "do" missions (but only short-term). They don't have the focus and intensity to become a long-term missionary. Visiting your missionary on the field is one of the sweetest blessings as a church leader. You get to see them in context, feel, hear, smell, taste, and touch their world. Yet it is also an earnest endeavor to shepherd them well, even to delve into the hard things in their life. Plan well. Let them know that your visit is not as a tourist, not as a dignitary or featured guest, but simply as a shepherd wanting to care for them. This episode will help you sort of the issues.
