In this solo episode of Sexual Assault Survivor Stories (The SASS Podcast), host Dave Markel takes the mic alone to deliver a powerful, reflective, and informative monologue. While there's no guest again this week, the episode is anything but empty. Instead, it offers a thoughtful exploration of recent survivor stories making headlines, along with an in-depth look at survivor-led advocacy, cultural change, and resources for healing. Dave begins by spotlighting three courageous individuals: Alex Cooper, host of Call Her Daddy, who recently spoke out about the harassment she endured as a Division I athlete at Boston University; Tina Johnson, a Roy Moore accuser whose home was destroyed under suspicious circumstances after she came forward; and Nicky Campbell, a UK broadcaster whose disclosure of childhood abuse sparked a wave of similar testimonies from others silenced for decades. Each of these stories reveals the complex layers of trauma—ranging from institutional betrayal to physical triggers—and illustrates how public disclosures can ignite change and connection. The episode also honors the work of prominent survivor-advocates like Amanda Nguyen, founder of , who authored the Sexual Assault Survivors' Rights Act (passed unanimously by Congress in 2016). Nguyen's legislation has inspired over 67 similar laws across the U.S., while her global What Were You Wearing? exhibits continue to dismantle victim-blaming narratives in powerful and public ways. Also highlighted is Chanel Miller, formerly known as “Emily Doe” in the Brock Turner case, whose viral victim impact statement and bestselling memoir, Know My Name, redefined the survivor's voice in modern discourse. This episode closes by offering a collection of vital resources for survivors. If you or someone you know is in need of support, please reach out: · – 24/7 hotline: 800-656-HOPE · – Support specifically for male survivors · – Education and national hotline for harassment survivors · – Survivor-led legislative training and advocacy · Even without a traditional interview, this episode is filled with substance, reflection, and a deep commitment to the healing process. It's a powerful reminder that survivor stories don't stop when the mic does—and that advocacy can take many forms, including quiet reflection. This one is for every voice that hasn't been heard yet—and every listener who's ready to believe, support, and speak up. Episode Recap: ATL Vets Atlanta Speaker Series Featuring Heather McCartyKey PointsHeather McCarty, guest speaker from St. Louis, Missouri, is a veteran ally with a decade of experience in the veterans' space.McCarty previously worked at The Mission Continues, where she developed and oversaw programs, and taught at a military school in St. Louis. Her connection to the military comes from family members, including her husband, who is a Marine Corps veteran.Through her experiences, McCarty feels a sense of belonging in the veteran community and is passionate about bringing learning and programs to those who need them.Women Veterans Leadership Program (WVLp)Origin and Evolution:Research at The Mission Continues revealed a disproportionate number of women veterans were drawn to the organization due to feeling welcomed and belonging. This led to the creation of a three-day summit in 2016, followed by yearly summits and the development of a 5-6 month cohort-based program. The program launched in March 2020 and transitioned to a virtual format due to the pandemic. In 2023, The Mission Continues narrowed its focus, leading to the transition of WVLp to Beneath the Service, an organization focused on identity-based leadership. Objectives:Empowerment: The program empowers women veterans by embracing their identity, boosting confidence, and changing their sense of purpose.Connection: It provides a network for women veterans to connect and support each other, expanding beyond the cohort.Skill Building: The program focuses on communication skills, recognizing the nuances that come with being a woman and a woman veteran.Action Planning: Participants develop a plan to apply their skills and confidence in their communities or workplaces.Target Audience:Women veterans ready to invest in themselves and lead from a place that feels authentic. The program is not for those seeking job placement or still figuring out basic needs.Eligibility is open to women veterans living in the United States.Future Success and Partnerships:Future success includes offering a Virginia Tech certificate to program graduates and expanding alumni opportunities.Partnerships with organizations like ATL Vets provide additional support and resources for women veterans.Q&AFunding and Resources:The program relies on sponsorships, grants, and creative ways to capitalize on the value of the cohort. The goal is to keep the program free for women veterans.Alumni Program:Alumni ambassadors play a vital role in shaping the program and providing support to future cohorts. They contribute to content, lead conversations, and serve as mentors.Ideal Number of Participants:While the ideal scenario is to reach all women veterans, the program focuses on quality and impact. The current cohort is limited to ensure a successful transition under Beneath the Service.Additional InformationThe application for Cohort 8 is open until January 31st.The program kicks off in May in D.C., transitions to virtual, and culminates in D.C. in September.Beneath the Service offers other leadership development programs and resources.Contact information and website details are provided for further engagement.

Acts 18:1-28 | Andrew Murch | After reading story after story of Paul's boldness and tenacity in sharing the gospel, it's almost shocking to hear God's calm, quiet reassurance to “not be afraid . . . go on speaking . . . for I am with you.” We don't know exactly what Paul was going through that warranted encouragement directly from heaven. But we do know that God spoke, reminding Paul of His faithfulness, and Paul listened and remained faithful.

I still remember one of the most often repeated phrases I heard after Hurricane Michael was: “I just can't wait for things to get back to normal”. It was an understandable sentiment. Whenever we go through times and circumstances that push us out of our regular patterns in life, as when life is hard and confusing, we just want to get back to something familiar so we can try and reorient ourselves. It's a typical response. We're going to be reading about Jesus' disciples doing just that as come to the final chapter in our study of the Gospel of John this Sunday. We'll be reading John 21:1-25. Peter and six other disciples don't quite know what to do with themselves after all of the events that unfolded in Jesus' execution and then mind-blowing resurrection. They probably had hoped that the skies would rain fire and Rome collapse in a blaze…but none of that stuff happened. Instead, life seemed to just go on and Jesus only seemed to pop in on them sporadically, and I'm sure it all felt really surreal. It makes sense to me that they wanted to get back to what they knew how to do, fishing. However, now that Jesus is on the loose, things done under their own initiative seem to result in frustration (v3). Have you ever experienced that? Have you ever not known what God is up to and so in exasperation just decided to go back to old habits and patterns you had before meeting Christ? What were the results, and what can we learn from that?Jesus' interaction with Peter is, to me, one of the most moving scenes in all of the Gospels. What significance do you see in Jesus inviting Peter to confess his love for Jesus three times? How could this interaction provide a sense of closure to Peter? What can that tell us about our own failures and Jesus' intent?Jesus doesn't just let Peter say words, he commissions him with a way of demonstrating his love for Christ. How does Jesus indicate a love for him is revealed? Is it something we can do in isolation, and if not, what does that tell us about our Christian priorities?Jesus finishes his instruction to Peter by commanding him to follow. What does it mean to you to follow Jesus? What does it look like for a 21st Century American Christian?I've really loved this gospel. We'll have one more study after this Sunday where we wrap up all the themes we discovered. I hope it's not the last time you visit this gospel…we barely scratched the surface of it. I truly hope you go there often, and go looking for Jesus in those words.I hope you can join us this Sunday at 10 AM!Click here for a pdf of the teaching slideshow.
