Welcome, Catholic Pilgrims. We've got a bit of a longer reading today, so I don't want to take too much of your time here on the front end.  Today in the readings, it's the feast day of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, who is widely known for her devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This would be why Mother Cabrini most definitely mentions her, because Mother's order is the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart.  So, today, we are going to hear about St. Margaret Mary, we are going to get some spiritual guidance, and we are also going to hear just about what is going on, on board the ship.  Without further ado, let's turn to page 66.

Welcome, Catholic Pilgrims. It's October 15th, 1891 and it's the Feast Day of Season Three's saint—St. Teresa of Avila.  As I've been doing these five seasons now, it's been so wonderful to see Saints talk about Saints. Mother Cabrini valued what insights and witness St. Teresa brought to the world and I think that shows her great humility.  The steamer that Mother Cabrini and her Sisters are on is getting closer and closer to the equator which means it's hot and if you are a religious sister, its not like you can just go put on some shorts and a tank top. This is just another example of the way these holy women suffered for the sake of souls.  Let's open to page 63 and begin.

While we admire Jeff's passion for the Scriptures, we also respectfully disagree with his view on how the Sabbath, and how the Feast Days should be observed. The conversation around Israel and the Torah is more than just historical it's deeply relevant to our spiritual walk today. Join us as we unpack these vital topics, challenge conventional views, and explore how the principles of rest, worship, and trust can help deepen our relationship with Yeshua. A quote from Jeff Schwarzentraub "That's the universe. "And he rested on the seventh day." Why did God rest? He wasn't tired, He wasn't stressed, He wasn't exhausted, He wasn't worn out. He was providing an example to all of us for how to live our lives. And to this day, if you go to Israel, from Friday night at sundown until Saturday night at sundown, it's called the Sabbath or Shabbat and nobody works. If you're staying in a hotel, in all likelihood, the elevator won't work. It'll open at every single floor and close at every single floor. And as an American it will drive you absolutely crazy, right? Because they don't want you to have to push the button because pushing the button is considered work. So on the Sabbath, the elevator goes automatically. And this was God's design for Israel. Now why would God say that they need to rest in Him? Because when you rest, you get replenished. Let me just ask by show of hands, just this week, even if it was for five minutes or less, how many of you experienced just a little bit of anxiety or stress of any kind this week? Okay. That's why God gave us the Sabbath. That's why God gave us the Sabbath. Now for Israel, God had them set aside from Friday night till Saturday night. There are some people today that say, "It doesn't even count as a Sabbath unless you do that." But we know as believers in Christ that that is not the case, because God in the book of Romans, through the apostle Paul, who was inspired by the Spirit tells us this. In Romans chapter 14 in verse five, he's talking about food and he's talking about dates. And when he talks about dates he says this, Romans 14:5, "One person regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind." What we know to be true is that after Jesus rose from the dead and He rose on a Sunday, the early church began to meet on Sunday. So they didn't keep the Sabbath the way that the Jews met the sabbath. Why? Because Jesus Christ was the fulfillment or the end of the law. So here's what he tells us about Sabbath. He tells us that we're in the Sabbath rest when we're in Christ. So God doesn't specifically tell us that there's one specific day that we must set aside, but the principle of it remains. The principle of it remains. The fact that so many of you raised your hands and talked about stress or anxiety. And the ones who didn't, it was because you were too stressed and anxious to raise your hand, shows that we need time set aside in our life to refresh in the Lord."

If you are a priest listening, just know how much we need you.  The rest of Mother's letter today could be written about our times today. She pulls no punches. We often think that our faith life and the way we talk about Jesus must be super sugary and nicey-nice, but, no. People need to hear that their actions and behaviors aren't gaining them anything other than a soul dead in sin.  Just as a FYI, Mother uses the word Belial and its a Hebrew word that means wicked or is used as a synonym for Satan. There is always an excuse for not exercising, a religious prohibition, some hereditary syndrome that makes you feel desperate when you breathe hard, an allergic reaction to your own perspiration, but these can be overcome with help. My excuse is that I hated high school phy-ed with a passion, the chin-ups, the rope climb, the running somersault, the running dive over the horse, the wrestling, the ridicule and the bullying, and I despised walking naked into a shower with other young men. I still do. After I graduated, I made it a point not to join other naked men to take showers. When invited, I have declined. If this is a favorite activity of yours, I do not judge. For some men, this may be the high point of the week. Don't say this is self-loathing on my part because it isn't: it's the other men I loathe, not myself. And it's not homophobia. I have many gay male friends and they do not undress when they come to my home. I am perfectly okay taking a shower by myself or with my wife on very rare occasions such as my 70th and 80th birthdays, the Feast Day of the Assumption in August and on October 27, the day on which Jack Morris pitched the Minnesota Twins to a 1-0 victory in the 7th game of the 1991 World Series. On December 21st, the Church celebrates the feast day of St. Thomas, the Apostle. A shadow of things to come, familiar words to many believers when speaking about the feast days and sabbaths. Paul's teachings on these things in Colossians 2:16-17 are among the more popular verses used to prove the Torah doesn't apply today.  But is this claim true? What is the context of Paul's letter here? What are the "things to come" that the festivals and sabbaths are shadows of?

The Immaculate Conception: Rooted in Faith, Fulfilled in Grace Today, we celebrate the profound mystery of the Immaculate Conception of our Blessed Lady. Although formally proclaimed as doctrine less than 200 years ago, its roots run deep in the ancient traditions of Christian faith and practice. This belief flows naturally from what we profess about Jesus Christ, for everything we affirm about the Virgin Mary is ultimately derived from our faith in Him. Nothing we proclaim about Mary stands apart from or beyond our belief in Christ—it is, instead, the fruit of that faith. From the very beginning, the Church has boldly proclaimed Jesus as the Savior, the one who secures God's victory over sin and death. Jesus, the Word made flesh, came to us through the Virgin Mary. He is not merely a man or the highest of created beings but truly God, co-equal and co-eternal with the Father. This central truth of Christ's divinity compels us to ask deeper questions: What does it mean for our salvation? What does it mean for Mary, who bore Him? Salvation is not simply the restoration of paradise lost. It is far greater; a sharing in God's very life, a gift only God Himself can bestow. No created being, however exalted, can grant this. Only God can bring us into this divine life, and in His infinite love, He chose to do so by taking flesh in Mary's womb. Consequently, we honor her not merely as the mother of Christ or of His humanity, but as the Mother of God—a title that reflects the singular mystery of her role in salvation history. This Mystery also Highlights Mary's Unique Sanctity This profound mystery also highlights Mary's unique sanctity. As the one chosen to bear God Himself, she was prepared in a manner befitting her unparalleled vocation. Just as a worthy temple is built for the glory of God, so too was Mary created to be a sinless vessel, entirely pure from the moment of her conception. Early Christians recognized her as the “new Eve,” free from sin and full of grace, reflecting the dignity required for one who would bear the Savior of the world. Mary's perpetual virginity and motherhood are another testimony to her unique role in salvation history. Unlike any other, she remains both Virgin and Mother, emphasizing her singular relationship with God. Through her, the divine Word became flesh, not by earthly origin but by the Holy Spirit's power. Her virginity underscores the divine nature of her Son, while her motherhood reveals her intimate participation in God's redemptive plan. As we contemplate the Immaculate Conception, we recognize its significance for our salvation. Mary's sinlessness was not for her own sake but for ours. She was prepared to bring Christ into the world, and through Him, we receive the fullness of divine grace. Just as a fine wine poured into a clean glass retains its purity, so too did Christ's presence within Mary require a vessel free from corruption. Her immaculate state reflects the extraordinary nature of God's plan and invites us to marvel at His boundless love. Hear why this is important to understand on this special Feast Day. Why do we bake cakes for Shrove Tuesday or use chalk to mark our doors on the Epiphany? Why do we crown statues of Mary with flowers or sing hymns to the biggest candle of them all, the Paschal Candle, on Easter Vigil? Steffani Aquila, author of Festive Faith, walks us through the liturgical year and explains some of the most cherished, and oddest, liturgical living traditions and practices to help us embrace living a festive faith in our somewhat odd Church.

What character trait do you believe disqualifies you from becoming a great saint?  Does the idea of being little and depending on God frighten you? What staircase are you trying to climb alone?
