HERE IT IS, YOUR LATEST HIT OF CINEPUNX TO CALM YOUR NERVES! Hey friends, welcome back for another exciting episode. This one is our long long delayed Halloween cross over with my other show, Horror Business featuring my sexy and charming co-host, Mr. Justin Lore. UP FRONT WE WANT TO APOLOGIZE FOR OUR AUDIO ISSUES, AND BY “OUR” I MEAN JOSH’S Look, if you have been listening to the show for awhile you are well aware of two things Josh is bad at technology We are poor and can’t just buy him a new computer However, if you would consider either SUPPORTING US ON PATREON orrrr BUYING ONE OF OUR COOL NEW DESIGNS it would go a long way toward getting us recording quality audio again. So, why did we go out of our way to have such a HORROR LUMINARY like Justin Lore on the show? So we could discuss THREE HAIR RAISING TALES OF GHOSTLY TERROR Kuroneko, The Legend of Hell House, and The Devil’s Backbone If you check out the other cross over episode here, you will hear about how this episode became, basically our desire to cover ghost tales for Halloween, and how we each picked 2 we felt like discussing. As usual we do WACK AND ON TRACK, and there is a technical issue that severely messes with Josh’s audio, but it happens pretty far into the episode so it should be fine.   Thanks to LEHIGH VALLEY APPAREL CREATIONS and ESSEX COFFEE ROASTERS for all their support. Go buy something. There is more to say and to link to, bu y’all have waited for this episode way long enough. Thanks for your support, tell a friend, post on socials, be awesome.   TALLY HO CHAPS, AND WELCOME TO ANOTHER ROUSING EPISODE OF YE OLDE CINEPUNX! On this thrilling installment we sat down with the true God, Josh Goldbloom, founder of The Awesome Fest, Bruce Campbell Horror Film Fest, programmer extraordinaire, and dude we know from HXC shows from back in the day. We discussed   THE DEVILS   CRIMES OF PASSION   LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM Josh was an awesome guest and a great sport as me and Josh A were in chatty, wildin out form, but he really put up with us and we had a great discussion   As stated earlier our episode focus was the works of Ken Russell, specifically through three films. We talk to some extent about why these movies and why now, but mostly this topic happened kind of randomly. Before that we get into our usual Wack and On Track gimmick. There is a lot that gets discussed that I should link to, cause shit is sick, but I am lazy so I will just post this gem.   If you don’t know now you know! Josh is really great, a real friend, and an amazing programmer and event planner. Check out some of his past work at The Awesome Fest and Bruce Campbell Horror Film Fest I know, my show notes are not nearly the immersive tour de force of our sister show HORROR BUSINESS where Justin Lore really makes them fun and funny and engaging, but you know what, I edited the show so this is what you get. Josh has a bunch of stuff coming up that is not announced yet, so we will add that stuff to the notes for this episode. So you know, check back and shit.   Thanks to everyone involved with keeping CINEPUNX awesome, most especially all of our PATREON subscribers This episode was brought to you by LEHIGH VALLEY APPAREL CREATIONS. We spoke to so many great people that we needed to break this into a couple episodes. On this episode we start off with an intro, a few folks from the fest, and then an extended conversation mostly with Chaka and Gavin of BURN but with some brief words from Walter Schreifels of GORILLA BISCUITS, QUICKSAND, HANDSOME and many more! As is often the case with our special THIS IS HARDCORE FEST episodes, the audio on this is rough. Your patience is appreciated, and your willingness to put up with all of it is amazing! Thanks to everyone for the overwhelming support we received this weekend. It was powerful and wonderful, and just a reminder of why we do this. Keep your eyes peeled for a second episode soon. Not much in show notes other than that Josh goes on a rant about all these awesome details regarding GREEN ROOM, and before any of you write us yes, we know he got almost all of them wrong. So don’t bother correcting us, we got it covered. THANKS THOUGH!! As usual there are too many people to thank, from the folks at the fest to Freddy Alva, Justin Lore, Wrong Evan, Sean Bennis-Sine, Steven DiLodovico and OG Gavin and all the BSB crew, Grace Kim, The Spina’s, and many many more. On this latest exciting entry into the Cinepunx saga we talk recent films, new programs, and our own lives! It’s great!   Hey, thanks for checking out another episode of the Earth’s Mightiest (film related, punk entrenched, and POC produced) Podcast! First off, this episode was recorded 2/2 in the morning, before the world learned of the untimely passing of Jon Bunch.  SENSEFIELD was a very important band to me growing up, and I continued to follow is career later as well. I did not know Jon, but many folks I am friends with did and remarked that he was as pleasant a human as we was a truly impressive vocalist. Hearing about his passing inspired me to being the episode with a SENSEFIELD song, which I know is paltry tribute to such a great man, but that is what I got. This episode we discussed some films we have seen recently, talked about some support and messages we have received of late, and then spent some time sharing development both in our personal life and on Cinepunx.com.  It would be worth it for me to write a long and in depth show notes piece, much like Justin Lore does for our magical sister show Horror Business, but as I say on the show, I find audio editing just really draining, so instead here are some significant links: This is Justin Gray who designed our new shirts This is a new film we discuss which has Pat Healy in it Videogram is super cool, and you can hear some of Magnus’ music during the episode Joseph A. Gervasi does a LOT of stuff like LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! DIABOLIK DVD EXHUMED FILMS Finally, thanks again to the awesome AMALGAM COFFEE &COMICS SHOP for being great hosts and so awesome   Ok so lots of links, lots of new writing The post CINEPUNX Episode 44: TALKING ABOUT OURSELVES appeared first on Cinepunx.

Horror Business

Episode V: Snow Day? Yes Way!   Greetings earth children! Welcome to the fifth episode of Horror Business, the podcast that proves yet again Justin Lore shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near anything he can broadcast his ideas through. This episode was originally intended to be a Christmas themed episode due to the release of The Krampus, but due to scheduling conflicts and general laziness, we unfortunately ended up making it into a general winter themed movie episode that happened to include some Christmas movies. The first film discussed is 2015’s The Krampus, with a particular focus on the instability of tone for the movie, the lack of any real likeable characters, and most importantly the near total lacking of any Krampuses. It’s safe to say we weren’t huge fans of this movie, but at least reasoning is provided as to why we weren’t huge fans. Compared with such horror comedies as Shaun Of The Dead, Gremlins, and An American Werewolf In London, this film falls woefully short in pulling off a sense of goofy horror. Also noted in the dissection of this film is the use of tired character tropes to propel the plot along as well some unpleasant connotations in what the film may or may not have been trying to say on the nature of belief. The second film of the episode is 1974’s Black Christmas, chosen for it’s obvious connection to Christmas. Attention is given to how unlike some other Christmas themed horror films, Black Christmas is connected only very tenuously to the holiday in that it takes place on Christmas Eve and, unlike other films that are Christmas themed, doesn’t rely upon gimmicks or puns. The proto-slasher nature of the film is examined, as well as its impact upon horror films in general (POV aspects, young people in danger, etc.). The lack of an explanation for the motives of the killer are a key point in this area. However, the most striking aspect of the discussion of this film is the nature of it portrayal of women: is it’s portrayal of women as weak and vulnerable a self aware phenomenon, in that it is doing so in order to criticize such beliefs, or does the film do so unknowingly and actually perpetuate a sexist and somewhat misogynistic view of women? In this discussions the motives of several male characters (a local police officer, the father of one of the characters, the main characters boyfriend) are examined, and the way they interact with the largely female cast is also discussed. The last film of the episode is 2010’s Trollhunter, a Norwegian film done using the “found footage” technique. The two main points of the discussion of this film are that it a) succeeds where other films using the found footage technique fail, in that it legitimately feels like footage that someone found and is watching in order to understand where it came from, a b) that despite being a one hundred percent serious film and having almost no jokes and zero irony, the tone of the film is nonetheless comedic. The difficulty of having a film remain serious and unironic while dealing with such subject matter as hunting trolls is discussed as well. The impressiveness of the computer generated imagery is brought up, and there is a discussion on how well the filmmakers blended traditional practical effects with that computer generated imagery to achieve the rather fantastic shots that the film stands upon. As always thanks to everyone and anyone who checked this episode out. You have our eternal gratitude for giving us another chance! Any questions, comments, suggestions for movies and guests, or if you yourself want to join us for a movie viewing or even an episode, can be sent to thehorrorbiz@gmail.com. NOW YOU STOP RIGHT THERE AND RAISE YOUR HANDS TO THE SKY YOU CINEPUNX BECAUSE WE ARE CARRYING PRECIOUS SPOILERS!! Hey friends, and welcome to the latest travesty that is Episode 43 of CINEPUNX, brought to you in glorious MP3!! This episode we sat down with Hexter (@hexter ) who you may know as the handsome ginger who works so many R5 Productions shows in Philly and specifically in the box office of Union Transfer. What you may not know, but we cover in this episode, is that Hexter is a giant movie nerd, JUST LIKE US!! We engaged in a lively discussion of THE HATEFUL EIGHT, the latest film from controversial director Quentin Tarantino. Ok, so first and foremost, this episode contains spoilers. We also ran into a brief technical issue. Basically my laptop died so we switched to the digital recorder, which was no big deal. The problem was that I thought I was recording, and I was not. Oops. So everything after the third musical break is a aprt of that later recording, which is kind of truncated. We lost almost 20 minutes of great discussion, which ten minutes was probably just my yappin, but some of it was Hexter so major apologies to him. I also make some really strong claims this episode that, in retrospect, I am not sure if I am on the most solid ground with. Feel free to type in all caps to me in the comments, or hit us up on social media This episode, as last, we had the great and fine honor to record at AMALGAM COFFEE AND COMIC SHOP  (picture below)   As usual they were so welcoming and friendly and just awesome to talk to. We had a brief convo before we started with Randy who is on the FANTASTIC Black Tribbles Podcast and I think honestly we missed out not getting that recorded. Randy is great, and that show is great, and that coffee shop is great. We are so honored that they would welcome weirdos like us so cordially. So, thanks! As usual, please annoy your peoples with us. MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU CINEPUNKERS AND OTHER STAR WARS RELATED JOKES AND PUNS!!! Thank you for joining us for a fresh and exciting episode of Cinepunx! This is posting on Christmas Eve, so yes, it does in fact count as a Christmas miracle, unless of course you hate that. Then you can consider it a late Hanukkah present or a Kwanza surprise or just a thing that happened with NO LARGER MEANING DAMN IT! This episode we welcomed Cinepunx adjacent personality Sean Bennis-Sine to discuss film and recent cultural phenomena STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS  ALERT, ALERT, SPOILERS LIE BEYOND THESE GATES!!! Before you declare a price on our heads, know that there are SPOILERS APLENTY in this episode. Look y’all, why haven’t you seen this movie yet? Go see it. Come on. There is a point in the episode where I declare that there will be spoilers and warn everyone, but I just want to acknowledge now that I spoiled those details, casually, and without warning LONG before that moment in the episode and just did not realize it. So, sorry? No, actually I am not sorry. There is actually a LOT more to say about this film and the response to it which we do not have time to cover, mostly because I talk way to much. So, sorry for that too. I suck. Point is, if you have stuff to say about it, leave a comment below. WE ALSO HAVE TO SAY A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE AWESOME AMALGAM COMICS AND COFFEEHOUSE!! These folks run a GREAT shop, they were super welcoming to us, and we are hoping to have some of the SUPER cool folks who work there on an episode some time. I spend too much time in my endorsement of them hedging my bets some because I have a comic shop which is my home shop, SOUTH PHILLY COMICS, and y’all know how it is, loyalty and such. HOWEVER, it came across a little excessive. AMALGAM really is great, and you should def check it out, especially if you want coffee and cool conversation with your comic books. Hopefully, we can have multiple comic shops as our friends, cause both spots rule. It was a perfect location to record, but you will notice some music in the background of the show. No, I have not become some editing master who can add music to our episodes, that would rule. Rather, it was on in the shop. SO, episode went well, thanks to Sean and AMALGAM and some friend of Josh’s who he talks trash on in this episode, and as always thanks to Justin Lore for his behind the scenes help and Doug Tiley for basically keeping this website going. CINEPUNX PHILLY BACK AGAIN, DOIN A LITTLE EAST COAST SWING!! I actually have no idea why I started this post that way. Hey everyone, and welcome to another riveting and high stakes episode of CINEPUNX! On this episode we sat down with Philadelphia punk LEGEND OB! You may know OB from his zine, SHIT TALKER, or maybe you saw him when he was roadie for LIFETIME back in the day, or maybe you know him because he has been going to shows since before you were born? You might have even seen his piece in the “Sexuality” issue of HEART ATTACK and subsequently felt very strange. Regardless, OB is a long time friend of Josh and supporter of the cast, and seeing as he has been to venues around the world, and probably every one in Philadelphia’s show history, we sat down to talk with him about his venue experience! As expected this episode follows so many divergent rabbit holes that we don’t get to dig down as much into the meat of the issue as we would like, but OB was a great guest and I am sure we will have him on again. We discuss a number of venues, films, and bands that you should know about, so maybe use google and stop expecting me to do everything for you, geez. We do wanna repeat our thanks to all the people who help make the show happen like Doug Tilley and Justin Lore, we want to invite you to keep an eye out for our newest show HORROR BUSINESS, than Justin Miller for designing that logo, and thank everyone who has written for the blog and invite you to as well. The moon is full, my skin is tingly, and I can feel the change coming on, so it MUST be time for a new episode of CINEPUNX!!!! Our MONTH OF HORROR continues as we sit down with host of the HORROR BUSINESS podcast, scene stalwart, and internet sensation Justin Lore!! Justin is a big fan of werewolf films and was excited to come on the show and discuss them with us. We were also joined by Cinepunx regular Evan Vellela! You may know Evan from multiple episodes, some of our favorites in fact, as well as our many flyers which he designs exclusively. OH MAN WHAT  A FUN CAST OF CHARACTERS WE ARE!!! It was not long into our conversation before wackiness ensued. Some highlights Josh makes the bold claim that cannibal films are not only racist, but the people who love them are as well. Justin agrees, perhaps a bit TOO easily, while I attempt to salvage the good will of our cannibal loving audience. Of course, I am mostly just hoping for that Eli Roth cash in some day. So sick. I also say a bunch of stuff that I think is factually incorrect about the Fabio Frizzi show, like capacity and songs played Lore really loves werewolf movies. Evan really likes AMENDMENT 18 I suggest the real problem with werewolf movies is related to special effects Evan tells a story where he ACTUALLY says 14th street, but anyone from Philly knows that is NOT a thing. Josh says Thriller is the best werewolf movie ever Josh also says that werewolf movies are ALWAYS better than vampire movies, and I and Justin lose our collective shit. Evan doesn’t really care. We invite feedback on two things- CANNIBAL MOVIES, DO YOU LIKE THEM? ARE WEREWOLF MOVIES ALWAYS BETTER THAN VAMPIRE MOVIES? WHAT ABOUT AS A WHOLE? WHAT ABOUT JOSH IS A CRAZY PERSON WHO DOESN’T LIKE FRIGHT NIGHT! Thanks so much to everyone who watched the PERISCOPE feed, it is a fun thing we are trying when we record. This episode was a lot of fun to record, and we are so glad Justin and Evan could be with us. SOUND NOTES: sounded great. right? right. IT IS THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!!! What time of year is that you ask? Well, time for our very special THIS IS HARDCORE FEST EDITION!! We are hoping to make this our running tradition of setting up a table at the fest and asking folks to sit down for one to two questions and editing that into an episode for you all to enjoy! SOUND NOTES TO THE FRONT! Usually we address any and all sound issues at the end of the show notes, but we wanted to get at them first thing for a number of reasons. Recording at the fest is a LOT of fun, but it is a rough and tumble affair and it is easier to make mistakes then in a more controlled environment. So, the first thing you will notice is that our intro cuts short. That was a mistake of saving improperly, so we lose the meat of what Liam was saying, which of course doesn’t matter AT ALL, but we also missed out on all the thank you’s THANK YOU TO JOE AND CHRIS AND ALL THE STAFF OF THIS IS HARDCORE FEST FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN AND ALLOWING US TO BE A PART OF IT LIAM SAYS THANK YOU TO JOSH FOR DOING THIS BY HIMSELF MOSTLY WHILE LIAM WORKS FOR THE FEST AND WE BOTH HAVE TO SAY THANK YOU TO OFFICIAL AFFILIATED CINEPUNK JUSTIN LORE FOR EVEN HOSTING SOME OF THE INTERVIEWS, YOU ARE ON THE TEAM MAN Basically, Justin stepped in when Josh needed a break (WUSS) and helped out so we owe him, and he is a part of the podcast now, forever. The second reason we wanted to address sound issues immediately was to apologize to some of the guests on the show. We had issues this year with wind sheer on the mics, and some of you had significant portions of your interviews cut for just noise levels. Sorry! Anyone who would like to come BACK on the show and address something you said which got cut off, we are totally open to that. Hit us up! We also want to say THANK YOU to anyone and everyone who stopped by the table to talk to us! Below is a list of the folks who participated! PLEASE KEEP IN MIND-The following version of your name was patiently discerned by Josh from your handwriting, so if we spelled it wrong just let us know, but many of you do not seem to have full control of your limbs, based upon your handwriting abilities!
