Zweihundert. ZWEI. HUNDERT.
It's a busy one. My guests this episode are Sunderland's David and Peter Brewis, known collectively as Field Music, and Walter Schreifels of New York post-hardcore rockers Rival Schools. You may remember David Brewis from Field Music has been on the podcast before. I've been a fan of the band since 2007's magnificent “Tones Of Town” album. Depending on how you count it, “Limits Of Language” is their 9th, 10th, or 11th studio album, in addition to numerous side projects and offshoots. However you count it, “Limits Of Language” is a very fine album, and as usual, deserves a much wider audience than they tend to get, despite a bizarre and wonderful endorsement from Prince on his Twitter feed in 2015. It was lovely to have both Brewis brothers together on the show. Rival Schools are a New York part-time supergroup made up members of 80s and 90s hardcore bands, not a scene I'm into really, but the band's two albums, 2001's “United By Fate” and 2011's “Pedals” are really melodic and accessible, even for more of an indie-rock kid like me. The band are celebrating their 25th anniversary and have been reissuing their back catalogue on vinyl. Walter caught up me from a room on tour in Minneapolis, and I was impressed with the thoughtfulness and depth of some of his answers. Enjoy! Instagram: @sendingsignalspodcast
This week: a sister-cast episode to a series we have called the Inbetweeners where we on the bands straddling the 80s and 90s in rock n' punk n' metal. This is more specific to metal in the 90s after feeling the impact of the overwhelming shifting of sounds during the decade. Metal became a dirty word by the mid-90s as grunge and alternative took over the rock world, but a new movement in the metal genre blended all of these influences with the heavy. Thus, we give you - 90s Alternative Metal! What's this InObscuria thing? Our podcast exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover mostly bands that have been forgotten including some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the heavy metal 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and metal bands that began during this time put it all in an industrial-strength metal blender. Hope ya dig! Songs this week include:Quicksand – “Thorn In My Side” from Manic Compression (1995)Fragile Porcelain Mice – “Brown Nickel” from Frostbiddin (1996)Therapy? – “Nasuea” from Nurse (1992)Corrosion Of Conformity – “Clean My Wounds” from Deliverance (1994)Prong – “Unconditional” from Prove You Wrong (1991)Fight – “I Am Alive” from A Small Deadly Space (1995)Life Of Agony – “This Time” from River Runs Red (1993)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
Dave Hill is a comedian, writer, musician, actor, radio host, and man-about-town originally from Cleveland, Ohio but now living in New York City in a totally sweet apartment with a party deck and everything. Hot chicks come over to hang out and eat cheese plates and stuff with him all the time and it's awesome. Anyway, on the show business front, Dave has appeared on Netflix's The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Adult Swim's Joe Pera Talks with You Amazon's The Tick, Peacock TV's Girls5Eva, Comedy Central's @midnightand Inside Amy Schumer programs, TBS' Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, TV Land's The Jim Gaffigan Show, and TruTV's Comedy Knockout among a bunch of others. He is a frequent on-air host for HBO and Cinemax and has been on channels like MTV, VH1, BBC-America, and the Sundance Channel a whole bunch too. Dave also starred in his own television program The King of Miami on the Mojo Network, which was cancelled even though Dave really liked it. The show also aired in the United Kingdom on Sky TV's Film24 Channel. And you can still watch The King of Miami on Hulu too, which Dave is super pumped about. Oh, and Dave was a correspondent on Hoppus on Music starring Blink 182's Mark Hoppus on the Fuse channel, which ruled. Dave has been on other shows and in obscure movies too but let's keep moving for now. Dave performs live comedy over the world and has appeared at such festivals as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, SXSW, San Francisco Sketchfest, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Sasquatch Festival, Bumbershoot, Bonnaroo, the Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, the Crap Comedy Festival in Oslo, Outside Lands in San Francisco, and then some other ones too. He has also performed comedy at Sing Sing Correctional Facility twice and even ripped some guitar solos inside a Mexican prison a couple times too. In 2007, Variety magazine named Dave one of their “10 Comedians to Watch,” something he still won't shut up about. Some things are hard to let go of. Dave hosted his own radio show The Goddamn Dave Hill Show on WFMU in Jersey City, New Jersey every Monday night from 9pm to midnight for years and now hosts the podcast Dave Hill's Podcasting Incident, which is also broadcast on the UK's Fubar Radio, So...You're Canadian with Dave Hill, and History Fluffer, on which he is joined by Jim Biederman, Jodi Lennon, and Chris Gersbeck. Dave is also a frequent contributor to public radio's Live from Here with Chris Thile and This American Life. He has also appeared on podcasts like WTF with Marc Maron, The Adam Carolla Show, The Nerdist, and then roughly 78 other ones besides those. Dave is the author of four books, including his brand new book The Awesome Game: One Man's Incredible, Globe-Crushing Hockey Odyssey, in addition to Parking the Moose (Doubleday Canada/Penguin Random House 2019), Tasteful Nudes (St. Martins Press, 2012) and Dave Hill Doesn't Live Here Anymore (Blue Rider Press 2016). He has also written for the New York Times, GQ, Salon, The Paris Review, McSweeney's, New York Observer, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, VICE, Guitar World, and a bunch of other places too. Comedy legend Dick Cavett called Dave “a major figure among American comic writers, past and present,” which is pretty much the coolest thing that has ever happened as far as Dave is concerned. Dave is also a musician who currently sings and plays guitar in the power pop band Valley Lodge, whose song “Go” is the theme song to HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and the psych/garage rock band Painted Doll. He was also a member of Cleveland rock bands Sons of Elvis and Cobra Verde as well as Diamondsnake, a heavy metal band with Moby. Additionally, Dave has played guitar for Walter Schreifels and muscle metal band Thor and bass for Lucy Wainwright Roche and former Faith No More singer Chuck Mosley. He also contributed musical scores to films such as Dirty Deeds, Shoot First and Pray You Live, and then some other ones besides those two. Dave's Info https://www.davehillonline.com
The season opener of Anti-Heroes starts off with a bang with the great Walter Schreifels ! (Uncle Wally” if you're nasty). Walter is a guitarist, songwriter, and producer. He has played with seminal hardcore bands Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits and is a founding member of Quicksand, Rival Schools, and Walking Concert. To say the Walter is and massive influence on Zach in an understatement. The two explore Walter's approach to songwriting and his desire to constantly innovate and surprise listeners. Walter shares his thoughts on live performances, the importance of not signaling mistakes on stage, and the challenges of being in a band. Zach and Walter discuss their past collaboration in the band The Vanishing Life, they touch on the evolution of Quicksand's sound, and we get a current run down of Walters rig and pedals. Keith sits down with Popeye Vogelsang to discuss moving from Los Angeles to Pennsylvania, adjusting to life in the northeast, the formation of Calling Hours, working with Brian McTernan to demo and record the debut LP "Say Less" for Revelation Records and the band's creative process. We also discuss Farside, Popeye's first tryout for the band, how Walter Schreifels connected them with Don Fury to record their first 7", their short-lived ex guitarist Zach De La Rocha, their final LP "The Monroe Doctrine", recording the record, stories behind some of the songs and more.
I would be a few years late to hearing 1993's Slip by Quicksand for the first time, but once "Head To Wall" landed on a gifted mixtape in the mid 90s, I was ready for more! That signature raspy voice belting out the gut-punching chorus was none other than Walter Schreifels, the legendary musician from New York Hardcore bands like Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today, who would go on several amazing bands like Quicksand, Rival Schools, and a multitude of other side projects. I was thrilled to invite Walter onto Waterproof Records to talk about coming up in the 80s hardcore scene, what inspired him to write music, and we ended up getting a little philosophical too!
Not all talent buyers are nice guys. To be honest, it's a profession that seems to attract more than its fair share of bastards. But that's not the case with our good buddy Marc Solheim — who went from being a welcome fixture on the Milwaukee concert scene to being a big-cheese booker for Chicago's own Riot Fest without ever losing an ounce of his good humored charm (not to mention a single strand of his famously perfect hair). In fact, the guy's filled with so much goodwill that he actually attended Local H's very first show (at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1990) and years later he was STILL willing to book the band. Anyway — on this episode we talk to Marc about serving food to Mark Slaughter at Alpine Valley, Stevie Ray Vaughan's last show, flyering for “Jesus Christ Superstar”, working at The Rave, shows at The Unicorn, Corey Feldman's bodyguard, Wesley Willis and The Frogs, Walter Schreifels' three-peat weekend, vegan chimichangas, what goes into organizing a world class music festival, and a WHAT'S THE BEST?!? with Riot Fest headliners The Cure.
Walter Schreifels is a legend. He is, and has been involved in so many important projects as a musician and a producer, including: Youth Of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, Rival Schools, and many more. We finally got Walter! Our ol' buddy Walter Schreifels has been in more bands than you've had hot lunches and on this episode we tried (TRIED!) to get to all of them. We failed, of course — but here's some of what we DID get to: Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, Rival Schools, Youth Of Today, Gabe's “Good & Plenty” zine, recording “Slip”, CIV, Don Fury, The Ramones, Walter sings the hits, Gabe's Gorilla Biscuits jacket, Walter plays “La Grange”, and Ben whiffs hard on Van Halen. A very special Season 2 finale episode with writer, director, and musician Romeo Candido who produced many of the MuchMusic and MuchMoreMusic interviews that Matt recalls here each week. Romeo talks to Matt about joining the cast of Miss Saigon as a 19 year old, his Newfoundland roots by way of the Philippines, and how despite making feature films and writing, directing, and producing countless hours of television over the past 20 plus years....music is his truest form of expression. Matt and Romeo also reminisce about that time in Nashville they sang around a campfire with 80's pop star Tiffany. Follow Good Things with Matt Wells on Instagram. Follow Matt Wells on Instagram. Produced by Greater Hood Productions. Theme Song: "Good Things" by Walter Schreifels as performed by Rival Schools.
Walter Schreifels had Gorilla Biscuits in the '80s, Quicksand in the ‘90s and then Rival Schools in the early aughts. Their debut album United by Fate is a record that Mike has obsessed over for twenty years, Glenn came to late but has gown to appreciate more and more and Rod had never heard before preparing for this podcast. They come to the album from three different perspective but there's little disagreement about this one. The latest episode of The BrooklynVegan Show is an interview with Walter Schreifels, who's busy as ever. His beloved early 2000s-era band Rival Schools just gave their classic debut LP United by Fate an expanded 20th anniversary reissue, and the band is reuniting for some shows in 2023. On top of that, Quicksand continue to tour and put out new music, Youth of Today just wrapped up some shows, and Gorilla Biscuits just announced some upcoming dates. I recorded the conversation with Walter before the YOT shows happened and before the GB announcement, which he sort of teased during the episode, and we spoke about just about everything he's got going on lately. We focused a lot on United by Fate; Walter reflected on making the album, working on it with Bon Jovi producer Luke Ebbin, and the impact the album's left over time. We talked about how, with Rival Schools coming at the start of the emo boom and taking bands like Thursday and Taking Back Sunday on tour, Walter was simultaneously a "not-so-elder statesman" of that world and also a contemporary/peer and kindred spirit. He also talked about meeting and being won over by Cave In in those days, and how now Cave In's Stephen Brodsky and Candiria's John LaMacchia have both played as Quicksand's touring guitarists this year. The conversation also spiraled into other topics, like the parallels between the rising tides of Nirvana in the early '90s and Turnstile today, comparisons between hardcore in the '80s and hardcore now, and much more. Pick up the new United by Fate reissue on red vinyl in our store, and also browse our collection of Quicksand, Youth of Today, and Gorilla Biscuits records and merch. Jeanne also discusses the strength it took to balance family life and her career as the host of Fashion Television, the importance of being kind to ourselves, and how her recent experience with breast cancer inspired her to use her platform to spread awareness and positivity. First things first, have you joined the Substack yet? It's Monday. I won't hang about. The new Gogol Bordello album – their eighth – is an absolute rager. It's called Solidaritine and it sees the gypsy punks connect with their roots like never before. It was produced by hardcore legend Walter Schreifels, it features HR from Bad Brains, it has a Fugazi cover on it for Christsake! But there's also essential commentary on the conflict in Ukraine from one of that countries most famous sons, Eugene Hütz. I've wanted to speak to Eugene ever since fighting broke out in Ukraine back at the start of the year, and I was extremely grateful that he found the time to speak to me, despite the band being on tour – when are they not – at the present moment. It's a good one, this one!

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a hardcore legend and a fierce Ukrainian bandleader who recently worked on a record together: Walter Schreifels and Eugene Hutz. Hutz is the founder, chief songwriter, and energetic frontman of Gogol Bordello, which has combined elements of punk, folk, Eastern European, Latin, and myriad other types of music for the past 20+ years. It's a remarkable career that's taken Hutz from his birthplace, Ukraine, to places as far flung as Vermont, Brazil, and New York's Lower East Side. He's also had forays into the film world, collaborated with everybody from Madonna to Primus, and gotten crowds jumping at pretty much every festival you can think of. The war in Ukraine has naturally been on Hutz's mind, and he's organized benefits and spoken up loudly about it this past year. At least one song on the brand new Gogol Bordello album addresses it directly. Speaking of that record, Solidartine, and Hutz's penchant for collaboration, it was produced by Walter Schreifels. Check out “Fire on Ice Floe.” Schreifels isn't just a producer; in fact, that job is probably like the tenth thing on his impressive resume. He was a pioneer of the New York hardcore scene as a member of both Youth of Today and Gorilla Biscuits, and from there he went on to sing and play guitar in Quicksand. A restless writer and performer, Schreifels formed half a dozen short-lived projects over the past couple of decades, in addition to reuniting sporadically with his various bands. Quicksand has released two great albums since getting back together in 2012; they're heading out on a package tour soon with Clutch and Helmet. There's also a reissue of a great record by another of Schreifels' short-lived projects, Rival Schools, coming later this year. It's hard to keep track of everything he does, but well worth the effort. These two NYC pals talk here about the city's importance and vibe, as well as getting into deeper conversation about the war in Ukraine, how running can help prepare you for being in a punk band, and about how the pandemic might have led people back to hardcore music. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Eugene Hutz and Walter Schreifels for chatting. On this episode I'm speaking to a man who has been a constant throughout my entire existence as a music fan. Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, Rival Schools – for over thrity years, Walter Schreifels has made music that I've both loved, and that has helped shape the way I've seen the world and how I've existed within it. Now in the third chapter of their existence, the New York groups excellent fourth album, Distant Populations, is out now on Epitaph. I hope you enjoy this big old slab of conversation - primarily about Quicksand, but there's a bunch of stuff in there about Gorilla Biscuits, Rival Schools and - um - Gay Dad too!The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. Have you been dreaming of a new metal revival? Yeah, us neither. The boys set it off with a little bit of vax chat then it's all music, all the time. Copyright lawsuits and lack thereof, Jason's professed love for Steve Albini, John Stanier's snare sound on Helmet's "Meantime" record, new music from Quicksand and the unadulterated genius of Walter Schreifels in all it's incarnations. Did we mention Limp Bizkit? Yeah, I guess we have to talk about that too as well as newly announced tour mates, Evanescence:Code Red aka Spiritbox. We also discuss festival lineup overlaps, Metallica covers we don't need and our greatest disappointments from musicians we loved. This episode is George Michael approved, which means it's best consumed in a interstate rest area men's room. Dig in!
