How many times have you watched the sweaty lesbian fever dream that is Love Lies Bleeding? As you might be able to guess from this episode, Michelle Devereaux and I have stopped counting. Michelle is a feminist film-philosophy expert who joins me to talk about Rose Glass's super queer neo noir, the interplay of genre conventions and gender dynamics, and all the fun intertexts and easter eggs that we found in Love Lies Bleeding. Whether you're into bodybuilding and gender transgression or lesbian romance against all odds, this episode is for you. ReferencesRose Glass' Love Lies Bleeding (2024)Devereaux, Michelle. Today's guest is more than a hitmaker — she's a creative force who has shaped the sound of a generation. From penning chart-toppers like “Thank U, Next” (Ariana Grande), “High Hopes” (Panic! at the Disco), and “Love Lies” (Khalid & Normani) to building her own label, publishing company, and artist career, her story is a masterclass in reinvention, resilience, and longevity. And the writer is… Tayla Parx!In this episode, Tayla sits down with Ross to unpack how she's navigated more than a decade at the top of the music industry — from her start in Hairspray to writing with Babyface, to becoming one of the few Black women with a #1 country song. She opens up about:Surviving the pressures of back-to-back sessions and industry burnoutTurning setbacks into fuel for her artistry and business venturesWhy branding yourself as a songwriter matters as much as the songsThe art of staying relevant without chasing trendsHow to keep building a catalog that pays you for decades to comeFor every songwriter, artist, or creative grinding to build a career that lasts — this is the blueprint.

Guest-host Carole O'Neill's guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is CJ Martin, author of the book Peter and Jodi (and Gloria). C.J. Martin, raised in a Chicago suburb, spent 31 years with a major corporation, gaining extensive international experience through multiple assignments in Japan and a posting in Singapore. He is married and the proud father of two adopted children, a son from Japan and a daughter from Indonesia. Now retired, he resides in the scenic landscapes of Western North Carolina. In her book review, Carole stated that through the telling of the relationship between a graduate student and a senior in college, Martin's contemporary novel is able to entertain the reader with his knowledge of the best music of the sixties. His trips to all the hangouts on Rush Street in Chicago will bring back memories to anyone frequenting those beer and dancing joints during their college days. Between keg parties, sorority, and football games, you feel immediately like you are a part of the scene. As I read, I found myself realizing that Peter was typical of the males in his generation, finding it difficult to know what love is really about. His uncertainty about whether Jodi was the forever one in his life added to his guilt about his unexpected relationship with Gloria. I fully expected to learn that Peter would tell Jodi about his entire encounter with Gloria and receive her forgiveness and acceptance of the ring that would allow them to move into the penthouse condo as a married couple. But it looks like we'll have to wait for the sequel. But beneath the satin and social charm, Dolly harbored a scandalous secret.Los Angeles, 1922.Gunshots rang out from the Oesterreich home. When police arrived, Fred was dead—shot three times. Dolly was found locked in a closet, unharmed, claiming a robbery gone wrong. But the truth was far more disturbing.Fred hadn't been killed by a burglar.
