This week, Earth's Mightiest critics bust out the fainting couches for a robust, rivalrous review of Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights!Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie star in the latest big-screen interpretation of Emily Brontë's 1847 novel, which unleashed relentless humiliation, misery, and revenge upon the literary world. Or, as the film's marketing calls it, "The Greatest Love Story of All Time"!The film topped its opening weekend's box office, despite mixed critics' reviews and scathing commentary by fans of the novel. But are audiences really past the point of caring if movies are faithful to their source material? And is this a more troubling sign of a lack of media literacy--and actual literacy? Both sides square off in a dynamic duel of defenders and detractors!Join us for a hot and bothered (mostly bothered) look at the latest IP smash-and-grab masquerading as an adaptation! You've probably all heard of Bird of the Year, but Bug of the Year might be new to you. Much like the name suggests, it is a competition pitting critters against each other. (Yes, we know the word "bug" only covers one type of insect but the competition organisers think Bug of the Year is way catchier than Invertebrate of the Year.) Joining Jesse to fight for their bug - University of Auckland Microbiologist Dr Siouxsie Wiles and Jonathon Ridden from Canterbury Museum. Click here if you want to vote. Voting closes on February 16th, results will be released on March 20th.

Daniel Zoughbie discusses Kicking the Hornet's Nest: U.S. Foreign Policy in the Middle East from Truman to Trump, arguing that Truman's one-sided recognition of Israel and decades of U.S. overreliance on defense distorted the region's trajectory. He traces missed off-ramps from Oslo to the Olmert–Abbas talks, explaining why partition remains the only durable framework for satisfying both nationalisms. Zoughbie recounts how polarization, trauma, and mistrust—along with U.S. missteps—undermine peace efforts even when viable plans emerge. Plus: Biden's rejected immigration tools, the inflation legacy of the American Rescue Plan, and a Spiel on Zohran Mamdani as the mispronounced word of the year. Are you aware of how the enemy attacks, and do you know how to respond? Most begin with a single thought that grows until eventually we end up overwhelmed, with out-of-control negative emotions. We must learn how the enemy traps us and how we can take our thoughts captive, bringing them into obedience to God's Word.

Angels show up in Psalm 103. they WORSHIP (along with people)they are MIGHTY (of course they are, they serve the Mightiest)they are OBEDIENT (all currently functioning angels are 100% obedient)they are an ARMY (who occasionally exert their martial intent)One thing that angels are NOT is forgiven. As far as we know angels are not extended the grace of forgiveness. There is no known redemptive plan for angels. For us, there is a redemptive plan, so we actually have the same reasons to worship as all these angels PLUS ONE MORE: Forgiveness. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
In 1960 Yigael Yadin, formerly chief of the Israeli general staff and by that year a prize winning archaeologist, visited the home of Israel's president David Ben-Gurion, and said to him “Mr. President, I have the honor to tell you that we have discovered 15 dispatches written or dictated by the last president of ancient Israel over 1800 years ago.” Yadin was announcing the discovery of a collection of scrolls written by Simon Bar-Kosiba, better known as Bar-Kohkba, who had led the Second Jewish Revolt against Rome, from 132 to 135 AD. Bar-Kochba was an inspiration to Israelis in the founding generation of the Republic of Israel who otherwise detested each other politically, finding in him a common source of inspiration for their own struggle. His is one of the many legacies of the series of revolts by the Jews against their Roman rulers, but not close to being the most consequential. For among the many unintended consequences of the wars of Rome against the Jews was not only the creation of the Talmud and modern Judaism, but the simultaneous growth of Christianity. With me to talk about these momentous events is Barry Strauss. He is the Corliss Page Dean Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University as well as the Bryce and Edith M. Bowmar Professor in Humanistic Studies Emeritus at Cornell University, where he was formerly Chair of the Department of History as well as Professor of History and Classics. A prolific author, his most recent book is Jews vs Rome: Two Centuries of Rebellion Against the Worlds Mightiest Empire. This is his fourth appearance on Historically Thinking. For Further InvestigationBarry Strauss' most recent appearance on the podcast was to discuss "The War That Made the Roman Empire". He also contributed

Jews vs. Rome: Two Centuries of Rebellion Against the World's Mightiest Empire (Simon & Schuster, 2025) by Barry Strauss recounts the history and events of three major uprisings: the Great Revolt of 66–70 CE, which led to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, culminating in the Siege of Masada, where defenders chose mass suicide over surrender; the Diaspora Revolt, ignited by heavy taxes across the Empire; and the Bar Kokhba Revolt. Strauss has a way with telling stories that makes his subjects come alive. One walks away from his book not just knowing what happened, but with an appreciation for the different voices in the room, those supporting rebellion, those siding with Rome, the local leaders at the time, and the Roman governors and emperors who suppress these rebellions. We meet pivotal figures such as Simon Bar Kokhba but also some of those lesser-known women of the era like Berenice, a Jewish princess who played a major role in the politics of the Great Revolt and was improbably the love of Titus—Rome's future emperor and the man who destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple. Today, echoes of those battles resonate as the Jewish nation faces new challenges and conflicts. Jews vs. Rome offers a captivating narrative that connects the past with the present, appealing to anyone interested in Rome, Jewish history, or the compelling true tales of resilience and resistance. Barry Strauss is a leading historian of antiquity and the author of numerous books. He is a former Chair of Cornell's Department of History as well as a former Director of Cornell's Judith Reppy Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies, where he studied modern engagements from Bosnia to Iraq and from Afghanistan to Europe. He is also Corliss Page Dean Fellow at the Hoover Institution. Rabbi Marc Katz is the Rabbi at Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield, NJ. Jesus didn't just die for our sins. He lowered himself to such a position of humiliation that it would be like asking a baby you gave birth to what you should do for the day. Jesus, the Word of God, who created everything with the Father and the Holy Spirit, became creation. The CREATOR became like CREATION. There is no depth or lowness that God wouldn't put Himself to come after you! Monologue: Autumn reminisces on nostalgic Easter memories. Message: Autumn describes how the mightiest and most selfless thing that Jesus ever did was specifically for you. Quack. Quack. Quack. Quack. Quack. Just like Powdermilk Biscuits in the big blue box, they'll give you the strength to go out and do what needs to be done, though neither Sid nor Keith are as tasty or expeditious. (We can't actually verify that last statement, but I don't think there's anyone on God's green earth that wants to be the ones to verify that last statement. Move to strike passed by acclamation.
