This week: a sister-cast episode to a series we have called the Inbetweeners where we on the bands straddling the 80s and 90s in rock n' punk n' metal. This is more specific to metal in the 90s after feeling the impact of the overwhelming shifting of sounds during the decade. Metal became a dirty word by the mid-90s as grunge and alternative took over the rock world, but a new movement in the metal genre blended all of these influences with the heavy. Thus, we give you - 90s Alternative Metal! What's this InObscuria thing? Our podcast exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover mostly bands that have been forgotten including some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the heavy metal 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and metal bands that began during this time put it all in an industrial-strength metal blender. Hope ya dig! Songs this week include:Quicksand – “Thorn In My Side” from Manic Compression (1995)Fragile Porcelain Mice – “Brown Nickel” from Frostbiddin (1996)Therapy? – “Nasuea” from Nurse (1992)Corrosion Of Conformity – “Clean My Wounds” from Deliverance (1994)Prong – “Unconditional” from Prove You Wrong (1991)Fight – “I Am Alive” from A Small Deadly Space (1995)Life Of Agony – “This Time” from River Runs Red (1993)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

The season opener of Anti-Heroes starts off with a bang with the great Walter Schreifels ! (Uncle Wally” if you're nasty). Walter is a guitarist, songwriter, and producer. He has played with seminal hardcore bands Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits and is a founding member of Quicksand, Rival Schools, and Walking Concert. To say the Walter is and massive influence on Zach in an understatement. The two explore Walter's approach to songwriting and his desire to constantly innovate and surprise listeners. Walter shares his thoughts on live performances, the importance of not signaling mistakes on stage, and the challenges of being in a band. Zach and Walter discuss their past collaboration in the band The Vanishing Life, they touch on the evolution of Quicksand's sound, and we get a current run down of Walters rig and pedals. Walter Schreifels Episode support by Distrokid and Jim Dunlop
Youth of Today - No More (album : We're not in this alone - 1988).Judge - Take Me Away (Album : Bringin' it Down - 1989)Gorilla Biscuits - Start Today (Album : Start Today - 1989)
The Organic Grill was a restaraunt originally located in the East Village of downtown New York City. Over the years it became a staple of the neighborhood, often frequented by people within the hardcore-punk scene; members of the Cro-Mags, Madball, Youth of Today and The Gorilla Biscuits. A genuine neighborhood restaurant created by people who had real passion for what they did. After over 20 years of business, the restaurant must close its doors. New York City's rising prices have led another neighborhood staple to meet its end. Please consider donating to help the final expenses for the restaurant's staff here: https://gofund.me/72ee4d74
La genial Chui Kanela es la cantante de Values Here, una banda de hardcore positivo a caballo entre Nueva York y Mataró con miembros y exmiembros de Shelter, Youth of Today y Bold. Durante la charla escuchamos su estupendo debut, 'Take your time I'll be waiting'; también Bad Nerves, Honesty, Dag Nasty y Gorilla Biscuits. Enjoy!

Ep. 124 - Cole Koopsman (Major Pain, Firestarter) Cole Koopsman, better known as “Koops” or Crucial Cole, is a living spirit of youth, hardcore, and positivity. I first saw Koops at a wrestling show in Long Beach many years ago and was engraved in my head due to his Gorilla Biscuits tattoo. Koops and I have run into each other at shows for some time now, and although we are opposites of each other, we are also very similar. We both love hardcore and want to better our lives in our own ways. In this episode, we talk about getting into hardcore, the future of hardcore, leading a positive life, and so much more. Unfortunately, we suffer another loss. And so we'll dwell in a little rain and even talk about some vampires. A little bit country it is here in Dallas, but it is increasingly progressive and so we thank those who gave us protection and reflect upon the continuance of life... and thank our bartenders. Some say I have big mouth... but you can fill it with some Gorilla Biscuits.

This week it's EVERYBODY's favorite: Freddy Herrera! Former bassist of The Exies —and currently Art Alexis' right-hand man in Everclear— Freddy is the kind of guy you always want in the room with you. Positive, funny, and the kind of musician that will always make your band sound better. Which makes him the perfect guy to help us figure out the WHAT'S THE BEST?!?: Bass Lines. Plus:!: Freddy wins the golden ticket for skaters, Taylor Swift re-records Iron Maiden's entire back catalogue, Freddy ALMOST gets fingered, and Gabe Rodriguez takes another bite of the Gorilla Biscuits.
I would be a few years late to hearing 1993's Slip by Quicksand for the first time, but once "Head To Wall" landed on a gifted mixtape in the mid 90s, I was ready for more! That signature raspy voice belting out the gut-punching chorus was none other than Walter Schreifels, the legendary musician from New York Hardcore bands like Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today, who would go on several amazing bands like Quicksand, Rival Schools, and a multitude of other side projects. I was thrilled to invite Walter onto Waterproof Records to talk about coming up in the 80s hardcore scene, what inspired him to write music, and we ended up getting a little philosophical too!
Darrin chat's with old NYCHC pal Charlie Garriga - (Judge / Gorilla Biscuits / Civ) The post Charlie Garriga (Judge / Gorilla Biscuits / Civ) appeared first on idobi Network.
CIV is the frontman of the Gorilla Biscuits, a hardcore punk band from New York whose energy & style created a lasting influence within the hardcore scene still present today. Considered one of the most seminal youth crew bands, Gorilla Biscuits' music is revered within the New York City youth, skate, art & hardcore punk scenes. With the help of Roger Gastman, CIV has released “A Roadie's Tale”, a book on CIV's experience touring the U.S. for Youth of Today's ‘Break Down the Walls' tour in 1987. We speak on the book, writing graffiti in Queens, tours & more.

And we could not have come back with a better episode then this one! RIGHT IN YOUR FACE! Yeah! Guest host Miguel and I sit down with Chui and Porcell (from Judge, Shelter, Gorilla Biscuits) to talk about their brand new band VALUES HERE and their upcoming album: TAKE YOUR TIME, I'LL BE WAITING which will be released next week Friday 22nd! We speak about:MUSIC! The importance of it.PMA! (Positive Mental Attitude)Chasing your dreams! Never giving up on yourself! The upcoming albums and the meaning of some of the songsVALUES and ETHICS!Being a DIVA and just being your true, authentic self and MUCH MORE!Even if music isn't your thing, or tattoos or yoga..... you will still find some jewels in this conversation that will inspire you and change you, rearrange you! These two are powerhouses, have a listen and share! “Personally I always like to push the envelope with every band and record I do. I never just want to live off of past accomplishments and recreate a sound I did with previous bands just because I know it will be immediately accepted. I'd rather push forward and always challenge myself to make newer and more interesting music. I knew Chui was an amazing singer so I wanted to write songs that would showcase her voice and harmonies. I'm a punk rocker at heart so I'll always make music that's energetic and rallies around a message, but for this record I wanted to go further into the melodic side of things.” PORCELL SHOWNOTES: Find the band here: @valueshere Find Chui here: @chuikanela Find Porcell here: @thehardcoreyogiLABEL: @end_hits_records Check out this interview, it was a great resource for us: https://thoughtswordsaction.com/2023/08/30/interview-porcell-chui-of-values-here/
This week I challenged Dylan to select a debut album from the year 1989. 1989 is already a tough year to choose an album from, and even harder when you add parameters around what you can select. Episode 128 Anthony "CIV" Civorelli We take a dive into the life of Civ and his way to finding hardcore punk. A lot of laughs and great detail in the very early days before he even picked up the microphone with Gorilla Biscuits. Along the way we get into the new book that he has written, "A Roadie's Tale" which is based on his tour journal from the iconic Youth of Today tour through the US in 1988 supporting the seminal Break Down The Walls LP, both tour and and record would have a major cataclysmic impact on the US Hardcore scene and beyond. There was metric ton of stuff going down in Metaldom this week. So we couldn't narrow it down to just one topic. This time 'round we get into the Bud Light/Kid Rock debacle, the Motley Crue/ Mick Mars legal mumbo jumbo, the "This is Hardcore" fest line up and, most importantly, we put the word out for a friend in need. In our "News, Views and Tunes', we share war stories from the live front and a new(!) K-Tel (!!) vinyl album. We finally got Walter! Our ol' buddy Walter Schreifels has been in more bands than you've had hot lunches and on this episode we tried (TRIED!) to get to all of them. We failed, of course — but here's some of what we DID get to: Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, Rival Schools, Youth Of Today, Gabe's “Good & Plenty” zine, recording “Slip”, CIV, Don Fury, The Ramones, Walter sings the hits, Gabe's Gorilla Biscuits jacket, Walter plays “La Grange”, and Ben whiffs hard on Van Halen. And oh yeah—before we forget. Thank you, Walter! https://deathwishinc.com/collections/iodine-recordings/products/quicksand-slip-deluxe-book

Walter Schreifels had Gorilla Biscuits in the '80s, Quicksand in the ‘90s and then Rival Schools in the early aughts. Their debut album United by Fate is a record that Mike has obsessed over for twenty years, Glenn came to late but has gown to appreciate more and more and Rod had never heard before preparing for this podcast. They come to the album from three different perspective but there's little disagreement about this one. We're punk rock and we're cops. The haters will say you can't be both but we're here to break down the walls. From a young age, punk rock has impacted our lives and shaped our beliefs and values. When we became cops, we incorporated those beliefs and values into how we interact with people in this profession. We're in this to help people, as cliché as it sounds, and that stemmed from the lyrics of every band we love. Lyrics like “make a change” stuck with us and we put every ounce of that into what we do on the job. This music is an outlet for us. From our elementary and middle school years to our adult lives. To all the punk rock cops out there, know you're not alone. We are here. Let's talk about the music we love and the reasons why we love… and hate this job. In episode #1, We get to know a little bit about our hosts: hardcore BFFs, Robyn and Roger. They discuss how they discovered each other and the other punk rock cops they chat with on the ol' Instagram. Ten Eight Memes and Unit2Back happened to bring a lot of them together. Roger and Robyn discuss how they got into punk rock and how they became cops. They talk about bands they love and their favorite generation of punk, the 90's. They talk about how coming from the punk rock scene affected they way they do the job and how it's helped them build rapport with people. Robyn and Roger debate what the best generation of the Misfits was and discuss all things Danzig. They tell us who are their all-time favorite bands: The Misfits, Shelter, Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, the Gaslight Anthem, Rancid, Ten Yard Fight, Dropkick Murphys, Street Dogs, Blood for Blood, Dashboard Confessional, etc. They close out the episode with some of their favorite underrated bands. Roger's underrated band recommendation: “Curl Up and Die” and their album “Unfortunately We're Not Robots”. Robyn's underrated band pick: Common Rider (Jesse Michael from Op Ivy). Some other underrated Boston bands they hyped: Reach the Sky and Street Dogs. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/teneightpodcast/support
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a hardcore legend and a fierce Ukrainian bandleader who recently worked on a record together: Walter Schreifels and Eugene Hutz. Hutz is the founder, chief songwriter, and energetic frontman of Gogol Bordello, which has combined elements of punk, folk, Eastern European, Latin, and myriad other types of music for the past 20+ years. It's a remarkable career that's taken Hutz from his birthplace, Ukraine, to places as far flung as Vermont, Brazil, and New York's Lower East Side. He's also had forays into the film world, collaborated with everybody from Madonna to Primus, and gotten crowds jumping at pretty much every festival you can think of. The war in Ukraine has naturally been on Hutz's mind, and he's organized benefits and spoken up loudly about it this past year. At least one song on the brand new Gogol Bordello album addresses it directly. Speaking of that record, Solidartine, and Hutz's penchant for collaboration, it was produced by Walter Schreifels. Check out “Fire on Ice Floe.” Schreifels isn't just a producer; in fact, that job is probably like the tenth thing on his impressive resume. He was a pioneer of the New York hardcore scene as a member of both Youth of Today and Gorilla Biscuits, and from there he went on to sing and play guitar in Quicksand. A restless writer and performer, Schreifels formed half a dozen short-lived projects over the past couple of decades, in addition to reuniting sporadically with his various bands. Quicksand has released two great albums since getting back together in 2012; they're heading out on a package tour soon with Clutch and Helmet. There's also a reissue of a great record by another of Schreifels' short-lived projects, Rival Schools, coming later this year. It's hard to keep track of everything he does, but well worth the effort. These two NYC pals talk here about the city's importance and vibe, as well as getting into deeper conversation about the war in Ukraine, how running can help prepare you for being in a punk band, and about how the pandemic might have led people back to hardcore music. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Eugene Hutz and Walter Schreifels for chatting. If you like what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all we have to offer on this very website. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

New York hardcore took a positive turn in December, 1994, when Shutdown emerged on the scene as one of few bands ready to take their music and message to the next level. With an emphasis on old-school values and new school musical sensibility, Shutdown were poised to take over where bands like Warzone, Cro-Mags and Gorilla Biscuits left off. With older members of the NYHC crowd supporting these "kids", success has been a natural transition. They have played some of the biggest shows in past hardcore history, including one of the two tributes to Raybeez (Warzone) at CBGB's in the fall of 1997. Raybeez himself actually went as far as to state that Shutdown is "the future of hardcore". Shutdown stopped playing full-time shortly after finishing a quick stint on Warped Tour in 2001. In 2006, Black & Blue invited Shutdown to play the NYC Superbowl of Hardcore which stands as the biggest hardcore show in NYC every year. In 2010, Shutdown announced its rebirth back to playing and doing random shows a few times per year. I state in the interview that Monkey helped me find the band but it was actually Brian Schatzel who helped connect me. So thank you Brian and I apologize for always saying Monkey introduced me to everyone even though he was done it a lot. I got Mark on the Skype and this is what we chat about: His thoughts on the current hardcore scene Andy from Kill Your Idols His brothers introducing him to hardcore Rick 2 Life The home promo video he sent Tony from Victory Signing with Victory California Takeover Why The band suddenly stopped Bands not liking them Working on a new record The Harley story And a ton more This week's sponsor is Mint 400 Records.
