Due West is a gut punch (in a good way) of a film. It's timely, relevant, and forces viewers to confront preconceived notions. This month, the Klaviyo Data Science Podcast welcomes Evan Miller to deliver a seminar on his recently published paper, Adding Error Bars to Evals: A Statistical Approach to Language Model Evaluations! This episode is a mix of a live seminar Evan gave to the team at Klaviyo and an interview we conducted with him afterward. Suppose you're trying to understand the performance of an AI model — maybe one you built or fine-tuned and are comparing to state-of-the-art models, maybe one you're considering loading up and using for a project you're about to start. If you look at the literature today, you can get a sense of what the average performance for the model is on an evaluation or set of tasks. But often, that's unfortunately the extent of what it's possible to learn —there is much less emphasis placed on the variability or uncertainty inherent to those estimates. And as anyone who's worked with a statistical model in the past can affirm, variability is a huge part of why you might choose to use or discard a model. This seminar explores how to best compute, summarize, and display estimates of variability for AI models. Listen along to hear about topics like: Why the Central Limit Theorem you learned about in Stats 101 is still relevant with the most advanced AI models developed today How to think about complications of classic assumptions, such as measurement error or clustering, in the AI landscape When to do a sample size calculation for your AI model, and how to do it About Evan Miller You may already know our guest Evan Miller from his fantastic blog, which includes his celebrated A/B testing posts, such as “How not to run an A/B test.” You may also have used his A/B testing tools, such as the sample size calculator. Evan currently works as a research scientist at Anthropic. About Anthropic Per Anthropic's website: You can find more information about Anthropic, including links to their social media accounts, on the company website. Anthropic is an AI safety and research company based in San Francisco. Our interdisciplinary team has experience across ML, physics, policy, and product. Together, we generate research and create reliable, beneficial AI systems. Special thanks to Chris Murphy at Klaviyo for organizing this seminar and making this episode possible! The latest in health care/weight loss trends seems to be Ozempic, which spiked in popularity in 2024. Now, the trend seems to be targeting men with "Men's Ozempic," or dosing with testosterone replacement therapy when unnecessary. Taylor MacPherson welcomes Evan Miller, CEO of Gameday Men's Health to explain the trend and delve into men's mental and physical health.
Evan Miller, PHD & Founder of Gameday Men's Health joins us to discuss not only mens health and what Gameday Men's Health provides for men's wellness but we focus especially on early detection for Cancer. Randy Moss, legendary NFL player announced recenrtly about his fight with Cancer & how he's gotten through the process due to his early detection. Gameday Mens Health:"With a background in behavioral health, Evan Miller, Ph.D. personally experienced the effects of low testosterone. He found it was hard to find a place that spoke to him — often experiencing a clinical environment that was cold, unfriendly and in some cases downright sketchy. He wanted a place where not only did the average guy feel comfortable in the physical space — friendly and knowledgeable staff, sports on the screens, and fast appointments — but also was treating the source of men's health problems with personalized care instead of blanket solutions.Gameday Men's Health was created. By focusing all of our energy on delivering premium testosterone replacement therapy, removing the stigma around erectile dysfunction services and more, we ensure our client's experience is relaxing, fast, and most importantly, delivers results. And that's what we do. We help men get back to finding their passion and purpose — day in and day out.Discover more about Our Process and why Gameday is the trusted choice for men's health."

Evan shares how Gameday was created for a clear purpose: to help men suffering from low testosterone (Low T) and erectile dysfunction (ED) reclaim their life. Set in a man cave environment – plush with flat-screen TVs, leather chairs, refreshments, and complimentary snacks, Gameday Men's Health helps men get back to the top of their game. And for those reasons, Evan Miller founded Gameday Men's Health in 2018. As an experienced prior franchise owner, Dean helps break down the Gameday Men's Health business model and its competitive advantages, which include: Strong ROI: $1.8M Gross Revenue; $627K Adjusted Earnings. *2023 FDD No Medical Experience Required: Gameday helps recruit a Clinical Director. Quick-to-Open: Clinics open an average of 4-6 months from signing a Franchise Agreement! Book Vs. Movie Sabrina Fair The 1953 Play Vs the 1954 & 1995 Movie Adaptations (Sabrina) The Margos are feeling romance a little early this year so we are diving into the play Sabrina Fair which was the basis for two Sabrina movies. Written by Samuel A. Taylor, the original Broadway production starred Margaret Sullavan and Joseph Cotten as our mismatched lovebirds, Sabrina Fairchild and Linus Larrabee, who both live on a huge estate in Long Island but one stays in the “main house” and the other lives in ‘the little house next to the big house.” Sabrina is the chauffeur's daughter who comes home after working for five years in Paris for NATO (!) and is now trying to figure out what to do with her romantic status. At the age of 30, she has a Parisian rich fellow who wants to marry her. The younger brother of Linus, David Larrabee, was a huge crush of hers but his new affection for her has Linus competing for Sabrina because…guy stuff? In the play, Sabrina is pragmatic on what is available to women in mid-20th Century America, and with her chauffeur father actually being on the chair of Larrabee's business board--marrying Linus is just a smart move. It's a witty, charming work, and no wonder Billy Wilder wanted to adapt it for his last film at Paramount. The 1954 film stars Humphrey Bogart as Linus and hunk William Holden as party boy David with Audrey Hepburn serving as the titular character. Bogart was 54 (and apparently really grumpy about everything to do with the film) and Hepburn, 25, had just won an Academy Award for Roman Holiday. Wilder had this Sabrina go to Paris for two years to learn French cooking while she obsessed over David's every move from afar. When she gets back, David wants to marry her (making her the fourth or fifth wife) and Linus woos her just to keep her from ruining some family deal with plastics. So, yay for them falling in love? The 1995 version was directed by Sydney Pollack and written by Barbara Benedek & David Rayfiel with Harrison Ford playing Linus Larrabee and Julia Ormond as our Sabrina. Here Sabrina spends several years in Paris working in magazines and developing a passion for photography. Greg Kinnear plays David who is swooning for Sabrina even though he is engaged to Lauren Holly. Here Linus works overtime to win over our heroine while she is very conflicted about her feelings for him. Does love conquer all? So, between the original story and the adaptations--which did we prefer? This episode is sponsored by Kensignton's newest “small-town romance with a big heart” novel by Kate Pearce Romancing the Rancher. It's the sixth installment of a series about the Millers of Morgan Valley who live in Morganville, California. Pearce is a New York Times bestselling author and her sexy and heartwarming stories are known to have unconventional characters and subverting romance cliches. In Romancing the Rancher we have Evan Miller who dreams of leaving the family ranch and joining a rodeo tour. He meets Josie Martinez who has bull riding in her genes but dreams of living in San Francisco instead as a tech entrepreneur. Book Vs. Movie The Lost Daughter The 2008 Novel by Elena Ferrante Vs the 2021 Maggie Gyllenhaal Directorial & Screenplay Debut The Margos are up for a psychological drama and wow--does The Lost Daughter deliver! The movie is the writing & directing debut of actor Maggie Gyllenhaal who tells the story of Leda Caruso (played by the amazing Olivia Colman) who struggles with her identity as a mother years after her children have grown and gone on their own. Set in Greece, adult Leda meets the messy and gorgeous Nina who is younger with a small child she seems to love unconditionally. Lena is traveling alone and Nina has a large noisy family with her and between a "detente" on beach chairs and Leda is able to find three-year-old Lena when she takes off on vacation. Nina's family embraces her without knowing anything about Leda, she has stolen Lena's beloved doll. Leda as a young wife and mother felt left behind in her teaching career and overwhelmed with taking care of two young daughters. She tries to be patient and loving with her spouse and children but she is filled with rage. Leda is not a “natural mother” and feels the best thing to do is to leave her children behind. Now she is 48, single, and trying to navigate life knowing her daughters resent her and not knowing how to make amends to them. Nina has her own secrets and questions her own ability as a parent. The film by Gyllenhaal asks the audience to try and have empathy for Leda while acknowledging her shortcomings. It's a truly amazing debut and we have thoughts about both the book and film. So, between the original story and the 2021 adaptation--which did we prefer? This episode is sponsored by Kensington's newest “small-town romance with a big heart” novel by Kate Pearce Romancing the Rancher. You can follow Kate Pearce at KatePearce.com and on Twitter @Kate4Queen In this ep the Margos discuss: The mystery behind author Elena Ferrante The basic story of the novel & film (we include spoilers!) Where do you go when you want to meet people, and yet do something good at the same time? Columbus Gives Back. Who are they? Columbus Gives Back is a non-profit which provides social volunteer and philanthropic opportunities throughout central Ohio. They organize events which are meaningful for both their volunteers and the groups they serve — and they have a nice twist of socializing to foster connections and develop stronger ties to the city. What I love about their approach is that they’re open to everyone, with a single purpose of make it super easy to join in cool projects. And they are growing like crazy -- because so many people want an easy way to volunteer, and it’s an awesome way to meet other people who love to get involved. Who volunteers with Columbus Gives Back? Think about it: when you’re new to a city, and you don’t know a ton of people, how do you get involved? This is what they’re after -- when you volunteer in the community you not only bond with your fellow volunteers, but you also learn about where you live. Alfred described it best: My favorite conversations at our events are about how long volunteers have been in Columbus. There are plenty of lifers here (I am one of them), but there are so many who respond: "I just moved three months ago or four months ago, or six months ago. I just moved here two weeks ago, and I want to get involved", and this wasn't the case four years ago. Everybody knows that Columbus is as a hot city right now - we are we are moving in talented educated people. What is it like volunteering with them? Amanda stressed that they strive to be open for everyone -- you can come with a friend, but you can also come on your own. Each project has a team leader to make sure everyone feels welcome and is comfortable getting involved. The whole point is to get to serve, socialize and have fun. Amanda described this spirit with a great story: There was one time we had this event at the Broad Street Food Pantry, where we go monthly. This one time it happened to be closed. We had a handful of volunteers show up who were ready to give back, and so we just found someone at the Broad Street Presbyterian Church, and were like, "listen, we came to volunteer, but the opportunity we came for is not available... what can we do to help you guys out?" And they just happen to need help cleaning the walls in their Nursery before they repainted the room. And our volunteers were like yes, we will absolutely do that! We were recording at the Columbus Public Library, and we ran into one of their Team Leaders, Evan Miller: the camaraderie was visible. They’re fun, easy to connect with, and possibly growing to 2,000 volunteers this year. (Listen all the way to the end of the podcast if you’re curious why this is important.) So check them out! Resources You can find them at columbusgivesback.org - with about 30 events a month, you can easily find an event which fits your schedule, gets you out and helping out in the community and making a difference without the complications of arranging your own service projects. If you want to learn more, they're socializing at Land Grant this April 4th with Columbus Soup -- more details here!

Eduardo and Stetson are the storage architects for NetApp IT, also known as Customer 1, and they recently went through a Storage Services Design Workshop with Evan and his team. QoS is more than just preventing bullies, and the NetApp IT team, commonly referred to as Customer 1, is living the proof of that. For our episode this week we bring back Evan Miller, Enterprise Architect for NetApp, Eduardo Rivera, Storage Architect for NetApp, and Stetson Webster, Storage Architect for NetApp, to talk about the result of their storage service implementation.
For our episode this week, we sit down with the group again, Evan Miller, Enterprise Architect for NetApp, Eduardo Rivera, Storage Architect for NetApp, and Stetson Webster, Storage Architect for NetApp. This week’s focus is on data protection being integrated with the storage services offerings. Protecting data is a critical function of any infrastructure, and working with the application administrators to clearly define a set of requirements early is key to ensuring success. The NetApp IT team talks to us about their experience with evaluating the needs of our applications and how they can more effectively provide protection while also keeping cost controlled.
IT departments across all industries are trying to figure out how to become service providers to their own businesses, and storage is no exception to this. Designing storage services which are capable of meeting the needs of the applications which your organization uses is critical to ensuring success. For our episode this week we sit down with Evan Miller, Enterprise Architect for NetApp, Eduardo Rivera, Storage Architect for NetApp, and we welcome back Stetson Webster (@stetsonwebster), Storage Architect for NetApp. Eduardo and Stetson are the storage architects for NetApp IT, also known as Customer 1, and they recently went through a Storage Services Design Workshop with Evan and his team. The result has been nothing less than phenomenal, resulting in appropriately sized storage systems which deliver improved services, balancing capacity and performance, and reduced overall cost for storage services.
IT IS THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!!! What time of year is that you ask? Well, time for our very special THIS IS HARDCORE FEST EDITION!! We are hoping to make this our running tradition of setting up a table at the fest and asking folks to sit down for one to two questions and editing that into an episode for you all to enjoy! SOUND NOTES TO THE FRONT! Usually we address any and all sound issues at the end of the show notes, but we wanted to get at them first thing for a number of reasons. Recording at the fest is a LOT of fun, but it is a rough and tumble affair and it is easier to make mistakes then in a more controlled environment. So, the first thing you will notice is that our intro cuts short. That was a mistake of saving improperly, so we lose the meat of what Liam was saying, which of course doesn’t matter AT ALL, but we also missed out on all the thank you’s THANK YOU TO JOE AND CHRIS AND ALL THE STAFF OF THIS IS HARDCORE FEST FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN AND ALLOWING US TO BE A PART OF IT LIAM SAYS THANK YOU TO JOSH FOR DOING THIS BY HIMSELF MOSTLY WHILE LIAM WORKS FOR THE FEST AND WE BOTH HAVE TO SAY THANK YOU TO OFFICIAL AFFILIATED CINEPUNK JUSTIN LORE FOR EVEN HOSTING SOME OF THE INTERVIEWS, YOU ARE ON THE TEAM MAN Basically, Justin stepped in when Josh needed a break (WUSS) and helped out so we owe him, and he is a part of the podcast now, forever. The second reason we wanted to address sound issues immediately was to apologize to some of the guests on the show. We had issues this year with wind sheer on the mics, and some of you had significant portions of your interviews cut for just noise levels. Sorry! Anyone who would like to come BACK on the show and address something you said which got cut off, we are totally open to that. Hit us up! We also want to say THANK YOU to anyone and everyone who stopped by the table to talk to us! Below is a list of the folks who participated! PLEASE KEEP IN MIND-The following version of your name was patiently discerned by Josh from your handwriting, so if we spelled it wrong just let us know, but many of you do not seem to have full control of your limbs, based upon your handwriting abilities!
