The Beastmaster follows Dar, a warrior who can telepathically communicate with animals. After his village is destroyed by an evil sorcerer named Maax, Dar embarks on a quest for revenge. Along the way, he's joined by a loyal eagle, two mischievous ferrets, and a powerful black panther. What unfolds is a classic fantasy tale of destiny, revenge, and the bond between man and nature — filled with mystical temples, daring rescues, and plenty of 1980s sword-and-sandal charm.Released in 1982 and directed by Don Coscarelli — who also brought us the Phantasm horror series — The Beastmaster became a staple of cable TV reruns throughout the ‘80s and early ‘90s. 99 Cent Rental returns after our October break with a listener request. Since we just did Don Coscarelli's 1979 debut, Phantasm, a movie made on tiny, sub-500k budget, we thought it made a lot of sense to see what happens when you break through and Hollywood heaps cash on you to make a proper movie. The result is... very Coscarelli-ish. There's no question whatsoever that Don is well-read on matters of fantasy and science fiction and these being the days before Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies mandated that all fantasy features be epic, high-fantasy blow-outs, Coscarelli reaches back into the pool of gritty sword and sorcery for something as characteristically weird as you'd expect from authors like Poul Anderson, Fritz Lieber, and Robert E. Howard. Is it good, though? Well...The story concerns the hunky, flaxen-haired Dar, the last of his people, who sets out across a dusty landscape seeking vengeance on Maax, the head of a wicked cult in the city of Aruk who will be killed by the son of King Zed. By some unexplainable power, Dar can speak to animals and forms a party of two ferrets, a tiger, and a hawk to have his revenge. Starring Marc Singer, Tanya Roberts, and Rip Torn, The Beastmaster lands heavily in the middle of the 1982 surge of fantasy movies that brought us Conan The Barbarian and managed to carve out a sweet cult of fans in spite of its tepid box office performance.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon:https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/

Bring Me The Axe! Horror Podcast

This week we go back to 1979 for a look at Don Coscarelli's dreamy, stream-of-consciousness horror movie that introduced the world to The Tall Man, Reggie The Ice Cream Man, and the mirror-plated Sentinel Spheres. It's Phantasm! Is this a horror movie? Well, yeah. Of course it is. But is there more going on here than meets the eye? Also yes. Though the movie is a bit of a mess and an exercise in that moment when a struggling young filmmaker decides to take the easy to road to success through cheap thrills it also hides a deeper dimension about loss, grief, and a boy entering adolescence, a time when the world suddenly becomes simultaneously more exciting but also more dangerous. In this wild adventure, young Mike and his brother Jody find themselves in the crosshairs of a sinister entity masquerading as a mortician at a nearby funeral home when they stumble upon his terrible secret: The Tall Man is not of this world and is stealing the dead to resurrect them as little dwarf slaves for reasons? Aided by their guitar-playin' ice cream selling buddy, Reggie, they take the fight to the funeral home to stop what could be a full-blown invasion of Earth by an army of the dead, aided by their terrifying flying death machines, the Sentinel Spheres!Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon:https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/

On night 6 of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing PHANTASM (1979), from writer/director Don Coscarelli. Following the death of his parents, friend and the fear of his older brother Jody leaving him, young Mike Pearson (A. Mike sneaks into the eerie Morningside Mortuary and discovers the Tall Man is converting the dead into murderous, shrunken dwarf minions and using flying silver spheres to harvest their brains for an otherworldly dimension. Along with Jody (Bill Thornbury) and their friend Reggie (Reggie Bannister), Mike confronts the Tall Man to stop his macabre operation, leading to a confusing and terrifying battle where reality and nightmare dangerously blur. We're sticking with the work of Don Coscarelli, and going back to the classic that made his name; “Phantasm”. A film in which Angus Scrimm shows that, despite being older, he can still shoot his balls round corners; we learn how to make some of the most dangerous improvised explosives outside of the Anarchist's Cookbook; and we meet a Jawa with a porn-moustache. Coscarelli's third feature film, made independently over 2 years with a cast and crew of mostly friends and family, would go on to be a staple of the horror section in video shops for the next decade, with its striking poster image (entirely unrelated to anything in the actual film) burned into the minds of a generation. Unlike a lot of its VHS counterparts; “Phantasm” is an utterly unique beast; a horror/sci fi hybrid with surreal set pieces and a mythology that obfuscates the more it reveals; coupled to a domestic coming-of-age story of two orphaned brothers (and their singing Ice Cream Man buddy). It would follow the route of successful 80s horrors in spawning a franchise, but this too would be unlike any others, with (mostly) the same cast returning each time, the story being picked up pretty much from where the last film left off, and lore explorations that again only deepen the mystery. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.

This week, we're discussing Don Coscarelli's “Bubba Ho-Tep”, and usually at this point, we would write a few amusing sentences about the film. But nothing we can come up with beats this premise: Elvis Presley didn't die and is now stuck in an Old People's Home in Texas. He teams up with a fellow resident (a black man who claims to be a post-assassination JFK) to fight a soul-sucking Mummy in Cowboy boots. Seen and loved by many at the time of release, now 23 years later, “Bubba Ho-Tep” seems, sadly, overlooked. Despite its horror royalty combination of “Phantasm” creator Coscarelli behind the camera, and a magnificent portrayal of a bitter and forgotten Elvis/delusional Elvis impersonator by Bruce Campbell (in possibly his best role outside of “The Evil Dead”'s Ash), it just doesn't seem to get mentioned much anymore. Which is a shame; Campbell's marvellous double act with the impeccable Ossie Davis as JFK give this mondo idea some real humour and heart. Despite the madcap premise, the film is also a reflection on the regrets, sadness and indignities of old age, with Elvis mourning his lost potential, and his body's decline (in a scatalogically graphic narration). Like its protagonists, this film shouldn't be forgotten as it ages, but allowed its time to shine forever. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.

A Company of Wolves (1984), Nightbreed (1990), Errementari (2017) As horror fans, we might not really think about the amount of horror elements that are in other sub-genres, such as fantasy. Sure, we all know titles like Conan the Barbarian (1982) that has a guy who turns into a giant snake, or Legend (1985) where one of the main characters is some sort of demon or devil, do those elements make it a horror film? We all know that horror is used in many different genres of films, even some where the filmmakers themselves go out of their way to make sure to define it NOT as horror. But we know. But when it comes to Fantasy / Horror, that's where the story might be based on fairy tales or folklore, and definitely has some elements of horror in there, either in content or maybe just characters. The line can get kind of blurry. But we also know that if its entertaining, then does it really matter? Take a listen as we discuss 3 titles that we all felt hit the Fantasy / Horror sub-genre, for a variety of reasons. Tune in and find out why. Titles mentioned in this episode: Army of Darkness (1992), Beastmaster (1982), A Company of Wolves (1984), Conan the Barbarian (1982), The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), The Crying Game (1992), The Devil's Backbone (2001), Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010), Errementari (2017), Eyes of Fire (1983), Frankenstein (1931), Freaks (1932), Häxan (1922), Hellboy (2004), Hellraiser (1987), In Dreams (1999), Interview with the Vampire (1994), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), Krull (1983), Legend (1985), Lord of Illusions (1995), Masters of the Universe (1987), Nightbreed (1990), Pan's Labyrinth (2006), Phantasm (1979), The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), Sword and the Sorcerers (1982), Suspiria (1977)

If you've been to a few horror conventions over the years, you've probably noticed all the artists showcasing their work. Do you ever stop to browse, flipping through their illustrations and taking in the different visions of horror they bring to life? These artists set up hoping to catch the eye of fans wandering past, sharing their unique takes on monsters, movies, and macabre ideas. One of those artists is Don England. For decades, Don has been a fixture at conventions, known for his striking pen-and-ink style. His work is not only distinctive, it's consistently excellent. We've known Don for many years, and like us, he's a lifelong horror fan. That's why we invited him onto the show- to talk not just about his love of horror, but also his art, his inspirations, and to give fans a peek into what it takes to be a working artist in the convention scene. We also dive into his latest project, Late Night Snack, a classic (but high quality) zine filled with his artwork, essays on movies, short fiction, a comic, and much more. Films mentioned in this episode: Alice, Sweet Alice (1976), An American Werewolf in London (1981), The Big Bird Cage (1972), Blood for Dracula (1974), Cannibal Ferox aka Make Them Die Slowly (1981), Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Curse of the Werewolf (1961), Dog Soldiers (2002), Flesh for Frankenstein (1973), Frankenstein (1931), Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943), Gut-Pile (1998), Headless Eyes (1971), The Howling (1981), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Jacker (1993), Jacker 2: Descent to Hell (1996), Mr. Sardonicus (1961), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Phantasm (1979), Satanico Pandemonium (1975), Shogun Assassin (1980), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Vampire Lovers (1970), Wolfen (1981), The Wolf Man (1941), Zombie (1979)

How a Pasadena Church is Helping One Senior Through Wildfire Recovery It's been more than seven months since the Eaton Fire tore across Altadena, just east of Los Angeles. Rebuilding homes and neighborhoods could take years – a daunting timeline, especially for seniors. Local advocates worry that many elders within Altadena's historic Black community won't be able to rebuild. Afro LA's Corinne Ruff has this story of how members of a church in Pasadena are coming together to support an elder congregant as she works to rebuild her home, and her life.  Fix a Zipper and Save the Planet at San Francisco's Free Clothing Repair Clinics Usually public libraries are quiet spaces, but on a recent evening in San Francisco's Glen Park neighborhood, the building was buzzing with the sound of sewing machines. Once a month, libraries around the city transform into pop-up clothing repair clinics. On the face of it, it's a chance to patch that hole in your go-to jacket or finally fix that broken zipper on your skirt, but the goal of the program is to help residents reuse items, and keep them out of the landfill. KQED's Bianca Taylor takes us inside. Repairing a 1957 Vintage Radio Rekindled a Daughter's Bond With Her Dad For reporter Rachael Myrow, radio has long been a fixture in her life – not just through her career in public broadcasting, but also through a connection to her father. Fred Myrow was an LA composer who wrote soundtracks to films like Soylent Green and Phantasm. She tells us how the discovery of her father's beloved old radio has strengthened their bond many years after his death.  The Truth Behind One of the State's Most Ubiquitous Bumper Stickers We've all seen them before: those bright yellow bumper stickers that read “Mystery Spot” in black lettering. But what, actually, happens at the Mystery Spot? In 2021, reporter Amanda Font  followed the story to the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains for our Hidden Gems series.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Nick sits down with filmmaker Don Coscarelli and producer Paul Pepperman to revisit cult favorites The Beastmaster and Phantasm, ahead of their Music Box Theatre screenings in Chicago. They share behind-the-scenes tales from the wild world of 70s independent filmmaking, including ferret-related chaos, tricky actors, and how they somehow snagged a PG rating despite nudity. Later, Esmeralda Leon drops by for a lighter turn, bringing along some cosmic trivia, reflections on Nick's 60th birthday, and highlights from a recent Texas getaway. But things really go off the rails when she launches into a passionate retelling of The Greasy Strangler—a movie so bizarre, it may have broken her brain. From indie classics to absurd oddities, this one covers it all. [Ep 365]
