Backrooms’ journey to the big screen — from anonymous 4chan post to viral creepypasta to mega-popular YouTube series to A24-backed box-office smash — is as unique and unexpected as the film itself. 20-year-old Kane Parsons’ liminal horror hit feels unlike everything else currently happening in the genre, which is partly what inspired us to pair it with the similarly expectation-defying 1979 cult hit Phantasm, but also makes Backrooms fascinating to discuss on its own. Which is what we do, in mostly spoiler-free terms, before shifting over to Connections to look at how Backrooms and Phantasm compare as low-budget horror phenomena that use unsettling repeating spaces, dream logic, and heroes with no sense of self-preservation to maximum effect. And if Backrooms has you craving more video-game-influenced liminal spaces, we’ve got you covered with a Your Next Picture Show recommendation for the recent Japanese horror-mystery Exit 8. Please share your thoughts about Phantasm, Backrooms, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. 20-year-old Kane Parsons is now the youngest director to ever hit No. 1 at the box office thanks to his A24-backed horror film Backrooms, which made back its budget several times over in the first week of release and is already inviting talk of sequels. All of that offscreen context makes it a natural pairing with 1979’s series-spawning cult hit Phantasm, but it has plenty of onscreen connective tissue to Don Coscarelli’s super-indie horror adventure as well. So this week we do our best to make sense of Phantasm, a movie that emerged out of a dream and often feels like it, and discuss some of the memorable moments that smacked us in the face and drilled into our brains like a Sentinel Sphere. Then in Feedback, we answer some criticism of our own criticisms of The Mandalorian and Grogu. Please share your thoughts about Phantasm, Backrooms, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. This one is something special. We have absolute legend of the animation and comicbook world, who has written episodes of Flash Gordon, Dungeons & Dragons, He-Man, Transformers, Star Wars: Ewoks, Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, Batman: The Animated Series, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Lost, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, PAUL DINI!Paul gives us the story of his career from starting at Filmation straight out of college, being one of the only people in the world working on Star Wars when it was dormant in 1986, all the way to inventing Harley Quinn. Just unreal stuff. Then we talk about the dark 1982 animated feature that launched Don Bluth's challenge to Disney, The Secret of NIMH. This week, Josh and Drusilla watched the very cozy Burnt Offerings. From wiki: “Burnt Offerings (Italian: Ballata macabra, lit. 'Macabre ballad') is a 1976 supernatural horror film co-written and directed by Dan Curtis and starring Karen Black, Oliver Reed, Bette Davis, and Lee H. Montgomery, with Eileen Heckart, Burgess Meredith and Anthony James in supporting roles. It is based on the 1973 novel by Robert Marasco.[7] The plot follows a family which begins to interpersonally dissolve under supernatural forces in a large estate they have rented for the summer. The film's title derives from the Book of Leviticus, referring to a "sacrifice by fire" and a "gift offered to God."[8]Also discussed: Marilyn Monroe's 100th Birthday, The Silver Book: A Novel by Olivia Laing, Backrooms (2026), I Love Boosters (2026), Watcher in the Woods (1980), Return from Witch Mountain (1978), Girls Just Wanna Fun (1985), The Midnight Hour (1984), Dark Shadows, Trilogy of Terror, Day of the Locust, Ruben and Ed, Phantasm, The Sentinel, The Legacy, Alliosn's Birthday, and more. Our hosts return to the Podcave to review the final episode of Batman: The Animated Series, “Judgment Day.” Alex and Will dive into the debut of The Judge and explore just how much he mirrors The Phantasm. Such as both characters being shadowy, masked figures with chilling voices, who stalk their targets in deeply unsettling ways, and all the while building toward a surprise identity reveal.Along the way, they wonder what happens to Two-Face's apartment while he's locked up in Arkham? Why doesn't The Judge find it suspicious that he knows so much about Two-Face? And how does Batman expect anyone to not notice his wildly over-the-top pirate disguise? The episode also serves as a tribute to Richard Moll, arguably the greatest Two-Face ever put on screen. As a final goodbye, Alex and Will pack the discussion with enough “number two” puns to make your head spin…TWICE!But, DO NOT think that this is the last episode of the Podcast, as our hosts will be continuing their journey through the DCAU and following Batman into Justice League.Tip Jar: https://buymeacoffee.com/batmantaspod ThreadHeads 20% Off: https://www.threadheads.com/BATMANTASPOD87466Outbreaks Issue 4 Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/speechcomics/outbreaks-1-4-an-ongoing-zombie-anthology-seriesMobster Mash 1-2 Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/speechcomics/mobster-mash-1-2-classic-movie-monsters-as-mobsters Join Our Discord - https://discord.com/invite/bQF76V3nUs TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@batmantaspod?_t=8zn1yhsgnfz&_r=1 Follow us on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@batmantaspod Follow the Pod on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/batmantaspod/ Follow the Pod on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/BatmanTASPod Follow the Pod on Twitter - https://twitter.com/batmantaspod1 Subscribe to Will's Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/willrobson Speech Comics Website - https://www.speechcomics.com/ Will's WhatNot Page - https://www.whatnot.com/user/speechcomics

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is still the gold standard for Batman storytelling — and it's not even live-action. Released theatrically at the height of Batman: The Animated Series, this noir-infused tragedy explores Bruce Wayne's one real chance at happiness, and the moment he chooses the cowl instead. More romantic, more adult, and more emotionally devastating than most superhero films that followed, does it hold up after all these years, or is it overrated? Guest Ivan Calixto is back to discuss.___Please consider joining our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/wwibofficialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@whywasntitbetterLetterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/wwibpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/wwib_officialX: https://x.com/WWIBpodcastSubscribe! Today we look at Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Directed by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, it's often described as the best Batman movie of all time and is definitely Sophia's favorite which is why we did back to back movie episodes. Listen as we dive deep into the underpinnings of what makes Bruce Wayne tick and why Hart Bochner plays such a great coke-head. There are some BIG Questions worth talking about. We have @FilmSpeak in the studio today where we break down everything happening with The Batman Part II, including the latest casting rumors and what they could mean for Matt Reeves' grounded Gotham universe. From speculation surrounding Scarlett Johansson potentially playing either Phantasm or Gilda Dent, to the major rumor that Sebastian Stan could be stepping into the role of Harvey Dent / Two-Face alongside Robert Pattinson, we discuss the pros, the risks, and whether this version of Gotham is ready for it. We also dive into Avengers: Doomsday, reacting to what fans are calling Avengers: Doomsday Trailer 3 — featuring the return of legacy X-Men (2000) characters like Cyclops (James Marsden), Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), and the looming presence of Sentinels. We also go through the full Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal, including the confirmation of Doctor Doom being played by Robert Downey Jr.. Plus, we touch on surprising Star Wars Starfighter news, with reports of Tom Cruise visiting the set of the upcoming Shawn Levy–directed Star Wars film starring Ryan Gosling — and what that could mean. There's a lot to be excited about… but are there some creative risks hiding beneath the surface? Let's talk about it. In this solo episode of Challenge Accepted, Frank finally sits down with the iconic animated film Batman Mask of the Phantasm after years of calling it a major Batman blind spot. He shares his deep love for Batman The Animated Series, breaks down Bruce Timm's distinctive art style, and explores why Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill's performances still define Batman and Joker for entire generations. After watching the movie for the first time, Frank gives his immediate reaction, digging into Gotham's timeless look, the horror-inspired presentation of the Phantasm, and the emotional core of Bruce Wayne's struggle between vengeance and happiness. He connects the film to noir storytelling, classic Batman comics, and the larger DC animated universe, then closes with a fun run of trivia and behind the scenes facts that expand the appreciation for this fan favorite. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 Intro, Challenge Accepted format, and Frank's Batman blind spots 02:30 Bruce Timm's animation philosophy and the look of Batman The Animated Series 04:30 Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill casting stories and why their performances are iconic 06:30 Why the animated series villains work so well and why Phantasm is so intriguing 07:30 First time reaction right after watching Mask of the Phantasm 09:00 Gotham's design, red skies, and Shirley Walker's orchestral score 11:30 Phantasm as a horror figure, camera angles, and visual storytelling 18:30 Bruce Wayne at his parents' grave, the split between Bruce and Batman, and the film's central theme 25:00 Joker's reveal, color palette, and his connection to Gotham's decay 31:00 Phantasm as Batman's dark mirror and what happens when you lose yourself in the mask 34:45 Trivia, comic influences, and fun behind the scenes details Key Takeaways Batman Mask of the Phantasm fills a huge Batman blind spot for Frank and instantly earns a place alongside the best stories from Batman The Animated Series. Bruce Timm's simple musculature, straight line and curved line design, and heavy use of shading create a timeless, stylized Gotham that still holds up today. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill's performances as Batman and Joker remain definitive, from Batman's grounded intensity to Joker's legendary, unsettling laugh. The film uses horror language for Phantasm, with low angles, unstoppable pacing, and ghostlike presence that make the character feel more like a slasher villain. Gotham's red skies, bold silhouettes, and Shirley Walker's orchestral score combine into a powerful atmosphere that instantly recalls 90s DC animation. The emotional core of the story is Bruce asking his parents' permission to be happy, showing how tied his mission is to their memory and how fragile that balance is. Phantasm works as a dark mirror of Batman, showing what happens when someone loses the "Bruce Wayne" part of themselves and falls fully into vengeance. Joker could technically be removed from the plot, yet his presence elevates the movie by contrasting with Gotham's world and quietly proving how smart and observant he really is. The film leans heavily into classic noir structure, complete with twists, flashbacks, and a tragic love story that feels very early 90s yet still emotionally sharp. Behind the scenes, the movie draws from comics like Batman Year One and Year Two, and includes fun sound and design Easter eggs that reward longtime fans. Quotes "That laugh is iconic. That is my childhood." "You forget how good this show is, and the movie by extension, until you see it again." "Phantasm is Batman. Phantasm is Batman." "If he didn't have that alley moment, we would have a villain, not a hero." "It's okay to love Batman. He is a great superhero, and we're so lucky they keep finding new ways to tell his story." The Beastmaster follows Dar, a warrior who can telepathically communicate with animals. After his village is destroyed by an evil sorcerer named Maax, Dar embarks on a quest for revenge. Along the way, he's joined by a loyal eagle, two mischievous ferrets, and a powerful black panther. What unfolds is a classic fantasy tale of destiny, revenge, and the bond between man and nature — filled with mystical temples, daring rescues, and plenty of 1980s sword-and-sandal charm.Released in 1982 and directed by Don Coscarelli — who also brought us the Phantasm horror series — The Beastmaster became a staple of cable TV reruns throughout the ‘80s and early ‘90s. In fact, for many fans, it's jokingly known as “The Movie That Played Every Weekend on TBS.If you are new to the podcast then please consider following us on the platform that you love, we can be found most anywhere that you listen to your favorite podcasts. 99 Cent Rental returns after our October break with a listener request. Since we just did Don Coscarelli's 1979 debut, Phantasm, a movie made on tiny, sub-500k budget, we thought it made a lot of sense to see what happens when you break through and Hollywood heaps cash on you to make a proper movie. The result is... very Coscarelli-ish. There's no question whatsoever that Don is well-read on matters of fantasy and science fiction and these being the days before Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies mandated that all fantasy features be epic, high-fantasy blow-outs, Coscarelli reaches back into the pool of gritty sword and sorcery for something as characteristically weird as you'd expect from authors like Poul Anderson, Fritz Lieber, and Robert E. Howard. Is it good, though? Well...The story concerns the hunky, flaxen-haired Dar, the last of his people, who sets out across a dusty landscape seeking vengeance on Maax, the head of a wicked cult in the city of Aruk who will be killed by the son of King Zed. By some unexplainable power, Dar can speak to animals and forms a party of two ferrets, a tiger, and a hawk to have his revenge. Starring Marc Singer, Tanya Roberts, and Rip Torn, The Beastmaster lands heavily in the middle of the 1982 surge of fantasy movies that brought us Conan The Barbarian and managed to carve out a sweet cult of fans in spite of its tepid box office performance.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon:https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/
