When God decides to record his first metal album, he will be disappointed to remember that Obliveon already recorded its masterpiece, Nemesis, in the Year of Our Lord, 1993. On its latest episode, Radical Research conducts a much-belated investigation of the first two albums by Montreal's most underrated sons, Obliveon. In the early '90s, the band treated a small-but-fanatical audience to highly-advanced, cutting edge, cosmic death thrash in the forms of 1990's From This Day Forward and the aforementioned Nemesis. Still unsung after all these years, Radical Research is here to set the record straight and shed light on one of underground metal's true greats. Note I: The “pointless, ridiculous 7 inch" Hunter mentions in this episode is this one, a Coroner covers split between his band, Canvas Solaris, and our phurry phriends phrom Pharaoh: https://www.discogs.com/release/2586288-Pharaoh-6-Canvas-Solaris-Tribute-To-Coroner Note II: Speaking of covers: Jeff mentions Agoraphobic Nosebleed's cover of Voivod's “Forgotten in Space.” He says the cover if about 6 minutes long, but it's actually a shorter 3:48. Don't trust Jeff on ANYTHING he says about Voivod… Note III: The Radical Research Patreon page is now set up and ready for your patronage. We are offering tiered subscription levels for those who want a set-it-and-forget-it donation option. As ever, if you choose to support us, we are humbled and grateful! patreon.com/RadicalResearchPodcast Note IV: All past Radical Research episodes can be found here, where you can also find Jeff's Peter Steele and Fates Warning books, Hunter's Deserts of Hex Volume 2…and more to come soon! Radicalresearch.org Music cited in order of appearance: “From this Day Forward” (From This Day Forward, 1990) “Fiction of Veracity” (From This Day Forward, 1990) “Access to the Acropolis” (From This Day Forward, 1990) “Chronocraze” (From This Day Forward, 1990) “Nemesis” (Nemesis, 1993) “Obscure Mindways” (Nemesis, 1993) “Factory of Delusions” (Nemesis, 1993) “Strays of the Soul” (Nemesis, 1993) Radical Research is a conversation about the inner- and outer-reaches of rock and metal music. This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.
SPOON! Adam and Will are back to discuss the FOX Kids animated series The Tick from 1994. A series that lasted 3 seasons, but doesn't seem as fondly remembered as X-Men, Batman or Spider-Man shows that were airing at the same time. The story so far: So much happens in the Movie Hole (like dying, killer robots, killer clowns, magic mole scrolls, etc) that sometimes it's nice to take a break from all the insanity.Who knew other people could check-out movies from the Movie Hole?! Well when Moleman closes a door, he opens a window, so we make do with what we have and check out the 1976 animal exploitation Thai action film Killer Elephants! This American cut of the film involves non-stop action and elephant excitement, but that won't stop us from diverging into discussions about video game logic, teacup elephants, and our dream to elephant walk across America! Your boys are back amid trying times! Sean discusses the political mood in LA and Parker has thoughts on a TV show that he feels invented the modern Youtube aesthetic. Then it's time for a July movie preview. Summer season is in full swing as we discuss Jurassic Park, Superman, the Fantastic Four and Tyler Perry's Madea! Next, we discuss a strange slasher movie where a group of students trek up a mountain looking for ancient artifacts and instead find a cult of millenium-worshipping druids, metal bikers and mysterious natives. Michael Tait. Robert Morris. Mark Driscoll. Ravi Zacharias. Are you tired of celebrity preachers? I am, and I think that's why the story of John Dyer fascinates me. My guess is that you've never heard of him. But I have come to learn that he played a significant role in the spread of the Gospel in Colorado and throughout the Mountain West, and his life has some lessons for us today, especially in this age of celebrity. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. Until next time, may God bless you.
An honest-to-goodness "Price is Right" challenge! Plus, tales of Las Vegas decadence and Lycurgus debauchery! In addition, a comedic definition of the word "Myrtle." This week on NAFC, the obsession with Clair Obscur has officially infected the entire crew—yes, even Gibbs. The gang carefully tiptoes around spoilers while still managing to gush about mechanics, builds, and the ever-present existential dread. Izzy and Mox recount their experience watching Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, where Tom Cruise attempts to end himself in increasingly elaborate ways. Again. They also touch on the latest episodes of Demon Slayer (Yaiba) and a few other anime on their radar before diving into the creature-feature chaos that is Critters (1986)—because nothing says “movie night” like tiny rolling murderballs from space. Ready to watch two passionate metalheads go down the rabbit hole of obscure bands, Metallica deep cuts, and unfiltered comedy? This episode takes you on a musical adventure you won't forget.John and Jay kick things off by discussing a potential recording opportunity for their band, weighing the merits of a surprisingly affordable studio package that includes recording, mixing, and mastering. Their excitement is tempered with the healthy skepticism of musicians who've learned that if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is—but this opportunity might just be the real deal. The conversation shifts to an extensive analysis of Metallica's controversial 2003 album "St. Anger." The hosts dissect why the album was initially maligned (that infamous trash-can snare sound!) while arguing for its importance as a creative stepping stone in the band's evolution. "St. Anger crawled so Death Magnetic could run," they conclude, showcasing their ability to appreciate the nuances of a divisive release. This segment shines with genuine passion as they compare studio and live recordings, highlighting how production choices dramatically impact an album's reception. The most entertaining portion arrives when the hosts embark on a journey of musical discovery, searching YouTube for underground industrial and metal bands. Their authentic reactions to discovering gems like After Dusk, Gloomlight, and The Cold Shoulder capture the pure joy of finding new music. "It's like discovering an artifact that hasn't been found yet," they marvel, sharing their excitement with listeners who might be seeking fresh sounds beyond mainstream metal. The episode wraps with updates on personal health journeys and upcoming endeavors, including a job interview and radio appearance. Throughout it all, John and Jay maintain their signature blend of humor, insight, and unabashed enthusiasm that keeps listeners coming back for more.Whether you're a dedicated metalhead or simply enjoy authentic conversations between friends, hit subscribe and join us each week for more musical explorations, comedy, and unfiltered takes on the things we love.Send us a text message and let us know how awesome we are! Then, Dean Cameron stars in a classic slobs vs snobs tale set in a ski resort in Ski School from 1991. This R-rated comedy was a staple of late-night cable TV in the 90's but does it hold up? We find out. Finally, we get a rare look into the world of early 90's Japanese dance, fashion and music in the 1993 V-Cinema straight-to-video flick Heartbreaker: With Love from a Bullet. He explores how these concepts explain the rise of what he terms 'Christian Trumpism'—a form of Christianity more about power and public display than individual commitment. Brad also touches on this goes against the grain of what most Protestants, especially evangelicals, are taught about a counterculture church filled with true believers - rather than a lukewarm cultural Christianity of indifferent pew-fillers. Back in 2019, John spoke with the celebrated comic novelist Stephen McCauley. Nobody knows more about the comic novel than Steve--his latest is You Only Call When You're in Trouble, but John still holds a candle for his 1987 debut, Object of My Affection, made into a charming Jennifer Aniston Paul Rudd movie. And there is no comic novelist Steve loves better than Barbara Pym, a mid-century British comic genius who found herself forgotten and unpublishable in middle age, only to roar back into print in her sixties with A Quartet in Autumn. Steve and John's friendship over the years has been sealed by the favorite Pym lines they text back and forth to one another, so they are particularly keen to investigate why her career went in this way. In the episode, they talk about some of these favorite sentences from Pym, and then turn to the comic novel as a genre. They talk about the difference between humorous and comic writing, the earthiness of comedy, whether comic novels should have happy or sad endings, and whether the comic novel is a precursor to, or an amoral relief from, the sitcom. They also discuss some of Steve's fiction, including his Rain Mitchell yoga novels. In Recallable Books John recommends Pictures from an Institution by Randall Jarrell and Steve recommends After Claude by Iris Owens. Discussed in this episode: The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, Laurence Sterne Vanity Fair, William Makepeace Thackeray Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain Jude the Obscure, Thomas Hardy “The Beast in the Jungle,” Henry James The Thurber Carnival, James Thurber The Group, Mary McCarthy After Claude, Iris Owens Pictures from an Institution, Randall Jarrell An Unsuitable Attachment, Barbara Pym Less than Angels, Barbara Pym The Sweet Dove Died, Barbara Pym Portnoy's Complaint, Philip Roth The Sellout, Paul Beatty My Ex-Life, Stephen McCauley You can listen here or read here. Join Jim and Greg for Tuesday's 3 Martini Lunch as they dig into the New York Times' latest attempt to undermine President Trump and congressional Republicans, Trump's push to reopen Alcatraz as a federal prison, and Michelle Obama's newest, tiresome complaints about life in the White House.First, they tear into the New York Times for framing the Congressional Review Act (CRA) as an “obscure” tool possibly being misused by Republicans to undo Biden-era regulations. The article warns readers that opponents can't filibuster CRA rollbacks—something the left suddenly finds troubling now that Republicans control Congress. Jim dismantles the Times' arguments, defends Trump's use of the CRA, and calls out the media's hypocritical coverage of these tactics.Next, they react to President Trump's call to reopen Alcatraz as a prison for the nation's most dangerous criminals. He also hints at sending criminal illegals there, blaming judges "that are afraid to do their job and allow us to remove criminals." Jim and Greg aren't sure that specifically rebuilding Alcatraz is the answer, but they do like the like of sending our worst criminals to places that will be remote and will become synonymous with a thoroughly miserable experience for the inmates. And some of their ideas for how to do this are out of this world. Finally, they roll their eyes at Michelle Obama's latest White House grievances—this time about paying for their own private meals and also travel for their children when the president wasn't with them. Jim and Greg are tired of how the Obamas continue to portray themselves as victims while enjoying elite status—but are enjoy seeing how their political influence continues to fade within the Democratic Party. Please visit our great sponsors:This podcast is sponsored by BetterHelp.
