Guy talks to Duane Jackson, founder of KashFlow, Supdate and Staffology. After a turbulent childhood - separated from his mum at the age of 11 and growing up in care - Duane left school with no qualifications. In between IT contracting and looking for some fast cash, he became involved in his friend's drug trafficking business, but in 1999 at Atlanta airport, he was caught with over 6,000 ecstasy tablets and was handed a five-year prison sentence. On release, he set up as a web developer with support from The Prince's Trust, but finding that accounting products such as Sage and QuickBooks didn't meet his needs, he developed a web-based application, initially for his own use; that software became Kashflow, and within 10 years, Duane had sold the company for an undisclosed sum, thought to be in the tens of millions of pounds. Duane's story is one of adversity, resilience and redemption, with many personal and professional triumphs, including the full-circle achievement of becoming a patron of The Prince's Trust.

Vicky interviews Kevin Whitehouse, an author, speaker, and most importantly an accountant. Before you scrunch your nose up and think all accountants are crooked, hopefully this episode will teach you a thing or two as to why you should take charge of your numbers and hire a good accountant to help you keep your financials in check. In Kevin’s 30+ years of doing this, he’s noticed a common theme; 90% of small business owners simply do not want to deal with their finances, and it ends up costing them thousands (if not more) in wasted profit. On the show, Kevin explains how you can literally double your profits, just by taking a look at your numbers. Key Takeaways: [1:15] What does Kevin do for his clients? [2:05] Aside from paying your taxes and not going to jail, why is it important to know your numbers? [6:15] Vicky used to hate numbers. Ugh! [6:35] How does Kevin help his clients make a real financial difference? [10:55] Percentages are your best friend! [14:30] When you know your numbers inside and out, you can find ways to literally double your profits. [18:00] Lately, Kevin has been working with owners who are running pay-per-click campaigns. By running simple tests, you can develop your own marketing budget and estimate how much it costs to acquire a sale. [22:00] It might be nerdy, but Kevin swears that budget forecasting is really fun stuff. [24:35] The good news is we live in a time where computers can do a lot of our calculations automatically. Kashflow is an excellent tool business owners can use to help them with their numbers. [27:50] How many small business owners actually really understand their numbers? [28:30] Do not skimp on the accounting side of the business. Hire a good accountant! [32:35] You’re in business to make money, so doesn’t it make sense to take your money seriously? You buy your property, you put a tenant in and take their first month's rent, you check your bank account a month later and...nothing. Your tenant has fallen into arrears...and how you handle it could make the difference between a swift resolution and months with no income. In this episode, we take you step-by-step through the process of dealing with every investor's nightmare scenario. We discuss: How to handle those first few days when the rent hasn't arrived as expected The importance of fulfilling your obligations in case you need to take legal action The specialist help that's on offer (two examples are Landlord Action and Evicthem) The two legal routes that you need to choose between to get the tenant out and recover the arrears What the court process involves, step-by-step, and how long you can expect it to take Resource of the week If you're anything like Rob B, your wallet is bulging with receipts rather than banknotes – and you're either letting expenses go unclaimed, or having to buy your bookkeeper one heck of a Christmas present. Luckily, Receipt Bank can come to your rescue: all you need to do is take a photo of the receipt on your phone, and it'll store it securely for you. It'll even extract all the key data ready for automatic uploading to your cloud accounts package like Sage, Xero or Kashflow. The best thing is the easier the process of dealing with your receipts is, the more likely you are to actually do it – which means you won't be paying too much tax as a result of overlooking legitimate expenses. News this week Buy-to-let mortgage rates are falling in response to the slowdown in lending demand after the stamp duty increase – and more lenders have been cutting their rates in the wake of the EU referendum. Not only that, but the Bank of England has relaxed capital requirements for banks – freeing up £150 billion of potential funding for lending. What does this mean? Well, cheap and easy money tends to mean higher asset prices as the funds have to go somewhere – and it also means that the lessons of the previous crash have been forgotten. This is exactly what the property cycle tells us should happen – so once we come out of the mid-cycle dip, we know what's meant to happen next... Vote to have the Summit come to you! In October we're holding our first ever Property Hub Summit outside London – and you get to choose where it is! There's still time to swing it in the favour of your chosen city – there are several gathering plenty of votes, but it's too close to call right now... Cast your vote here! Join the conversation What's your own process for handling tenants who fall into arrears? Have you ever needed to go through the court process to evict a tenant, and do you have any tips for other Hub members? We'd love to know, so join the discussion in The Property Hub! Duane Jackson is a Pioneer of SaaS in UK with Kashflow, an online account software company founded in 2003, which has been one of, if not the most exciting and disruptive SaaS coming out of UK. Kashflow was acquired by Iris in 2013, for a rumoured £20 million. Post acquisition, Duane has had 18 months off, during which time he published a book called 4000 days about his story from childhood, to being caught smuggling drugs into the US, Going to prison on a 5 year sentence, and subsequently founding Kashflow. Recently he launched his second SaaS Startup, Supdate. A must listen podcast for SaaS Entrepreneurs.
In 1999, when he was twenty years old, Duane Jackson was sent to prison for trafficking drugs from England to the United States. Ten years since his arrest, and a two and half year stint locked up, Duane has started, grown, and successfully sold his own business. By 2013, his company, Kashflow (a cloud based accounting software business) was employing 40 people, bringing in £2m a year in revenue, and providing its accounting services to around 20,000 start ups. How did he do it? Drawing on his passion for coding, and his life experiences in both children’s homes and prison, he cultivated a persistence and hustle that drove him forward.
