Diverse Voices Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed Preston Lauterbach, author of BEFORE ELVIS: The African American Musicians Who Made the King. In the interview Lauterbach highlighted the influence of African American musicians on Elvis Presley. He noted that Elvis's first hit, "That's All Right," was originally recorded by Arthur Crudup, and songs like "Hound Dog" and "Mystery Train" had African American origins. Lauterbach also explored the economic exploitation of Black artists and the cultural appropriation by white artists. He shared insights into the evolution of R&B and its impact on pop music in the 1970s, emphasizing the importance of recognizing Black music's roots and contributions to American culture. Preston Lauterbach is author of the American music classic The Chitlin' Circuit (2011) as well as Beale Street Dynasty (2015) and Bluff City (2019). He has co-authored three memoirs with significant figures in Black music, including Brother Robert (2020) with the stepsister of bluesman Robert Johnson, Timekeeper (2021) with Memphis soul drummer Howard Grimes, and the Blind Boys of Alabama biography Spirit of the Century. In this insightful episode of the WeWFM podcast, host Doug Casterton sits down with Brad Cleveland, founding partner of ICMI and author of "Contact Center Management on Fast Forward." They explore how workforce management has evolved from a basic support function to a strategic differentiator in modern contact centers. Brad shares his four decades of experience working with organizations across 60 countries, explaining how AI is amplifying rather than replacing WFM and why explaining "the why" behind forecasts is crucial for building trust with operational leaders. The conversation delves into practical advice for WFM professionals seeking a seat at the leadership table, the importance of developing T-shaped skillsets, and why we must never lose sight of the human element despite technological advances. Brad's vision of WFM as a "living, breathing ecosystem" rather than a set of rigid processes offers valuable insights for anyone looking to future-proof their workforce management strategy as we approach 2030 and beyond.

i found this bird with a broken wing about my doorstep— I see. Would you happen to know anything about that? Your—doorstep? Your bird. Who said it was my bird? Ours then, shall we? Anandar taught me explicitly how to go about being many places at once; I can be both. You're a puppy! If I was, I'd be a pit bull! Cute dog. [malicious] Oh! He bites. Where are you taking me? To your mother. I haven't seen you in 40 years. Has it been 40 years already? You tell me. Timekeeper. Now where are we? There was bass inside of me. The hurt started over in my heart, pulling a pressure, building up and then mounting at my throat, and in the back of my eye— haunting. I pulled somewhere between my ear and the back of my nose, pressing in on my eye with one hand to release the pressure— which had been lately, appearing as brightly as a white light at times, and in some ways it almost seemed as if I was some kind of star—not the kind on earth, but the kind in the actual sky. A bright white light. Still, it hurt, and the pressure had come in all kind of pains from headaches to outbursts of tears, deep breaths so deep that my entire mind and body would reset, shut off and then come on again as if I were a light, or some kind of computer— hard flashes of other worlds, and sometimes songs—but mostly, lately, just tears out of almost nowhere, if I didn't know any better—and I did, at least kind of— know where they were coming from. At least kind of. As I clipped the back of my ear, a heavy lull of deep bass I had never quite heard before began vibrating lowly as if it was what do become of me— some sort of astonished, I removed the grip from my ear and waited a moment, then placed the pressure back over the same area—and to my suprise, there was, some sort of deep bass radiating—not from the outside, but within. As sensitive to incoming frequency as I was, this might have something to do with it. It hadn't mattered much in awhile— I was almost definitely in some sort of block from my music, the inspiration seemed to have vanished into the night, and though with it had gone some harsh ties that needed to be cut, here came so another set of tasks, and talents—which seem to have been hidden or at the very least perched in the shadows unyet to the calling of my awakening. I could either go to the Drew Barrymore show, or The Daily Show, but I couldn't do both; either way, I knew that if there was something I wanted or even needed to know, the media would have its way of fortrlling what to be expected in the regular multitude of ways, from code switching to the careful arrangements at which things were conducted behind the scenes, both on and off air, however— treading lightly and under the circumstances of dismissal from even my own project and worlds, within the tightly knit circle I knew I had peered into and started to attract some sort of attention, and wondered if, even as a civilian audience member, my creativity would be procured. Which did I even have more interest in? Perhaps truly neither, as the excavation of my inner piece and fantastical plotting of narrowly escaping the depths of New York's well gated poverty system, I had been nearly drowning in an ocean of hopes nearly shared by every individual with which I shared this condition on the planet: that is to say—nobody wanted to be alone, broke, and lonely— and especially when that meant all of your art, hopes, and dreams had been entirely wasted. {Enter The Multiverse} [The Festival Project.™] COPYRIGHT © THE FESTIVAL PROJECT 2024 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. ©

Again, keeping your emotional distance, think about this change. Did you handle it better than the other change? Or, maybe you handled it differently? Reflect on the two changes. PAUSE Now, as you reach your hand into the time capsule again, You pull out an item with a note. Interestingly, the item is not related to a change. It is a stopwatch. PAUSE Now, take a minute And imagine your day. All you want to accomplish Without a delay. PAUSE And, as you see All that you've planned, Ask yourself, “Are these choices Or more like demands?” PAUSE And, if they feel like demands, That you're putting on your shoulders, It's like you're in a war, And you are the soldier. PAUSE Every day has its obligations, We all know that to be true. But there also needs to be space, In order to care for you. PAUSE So, yank off the combat boots, And prop up your feet. You've earned a reward, Some time to retreat. PAUSE So, imagine a spa day With massages and facials. Let yourself feel the relaxation, As much as you're able. PAUSE Now, take a few moments, To just breathe in peace. Let your body keep relaxing, And experiencing relief. PAUSE Stay in the place For just a few minutes, Or longer, if you choose, There are no limits. PAUSE Now, going forward, When you plan your days, Make sure you pencil in Some personal space. PAUSE So, remember… If days are only obligations, There may be some resentment. Add in some rest or enjoyment, And there will be more contentment. NAMASTE, BEAUTIFUL

Please enjoy Robin reading their blog post with some thoughts on ensemble heist stories in fiction. If you'd prefer to read it instead, you can find it here. Refer below for books of the types discussed. ----- Unplanned: THE ART OF SAVING THE WORLD by Corinne Duyvis - Parallel worlds subversion of the "big damn hero" Technically this group is unplanned and they don't already know each other, but on the other hand the group is the same person over and over from different parallel worlds. This leads to a feeling closest to the "unplanned" type. Mastermind: RIVER OF TEETH by Sarah Gailey (its sequel is TASTE OF MARROW)Alternate history with hippo farming in the American South. I recommend getting the duology in the collected volume AMERICAN HIPPO Pre-Assembled: JADE CITY by Fonda Lee (also its sequel JADE WAR, I'll be shocked if this is totally absent from the forthcoming conclusion JADE LEGACY)Lots of people have their own great reasons to steal lots of things in this epic clash between two powerful warring families. If I remember most of them knew each other before they their various thieving escapades, but it's possible that you could argue individual scenes fit "unplanned" or "mastermind" better. FEED, DEADLINE, BLACKOUT, and FEEDBACK by Mira GrantZombies, Politics, and Blogging. DEADLINE is the most thoroughly a heist story but the whole series is worth reading. BENEATH THE CITADEL by Destiny SoriaFantasy story about revolution, loss, and memory. TASTE OF MARROW by Sarah Gailey (sequel to RIVER OF TEETH)Alternate history with hippo farming in the American South. I recommend getting the duology in the collected volume AMERICAN HIPPO CONFESSIONS OF THE FOX by Jordy RosenbergTrans retelling of notorious thieves Jack and Bess. I'm unsure whether this is just the framing or if it's actually retelling an existing story, but either way I loved it. Hero Needs A Crew: THE SPACE BETWEEN WORLDS by Micaiah JohnsonDimensional time travel story following an initially-lone hero who ends up assembling a group around her in order to pull off the big event. A mix of solo and group heists. TIMEKEEPER by Tara SimA clocktower mechanic is trying to get his father back by fixing time. Cool heists in otherwise non-heist books/anthologies: "The Takeback Tango" by Rebecca Roanhorse in the anthology A UNIVERSE OF WISHES edited by Dhonielle ClaytonThe story itself is a fantastic single-person heist in the midst of an otherwise non-heist anthology. "A Drop of Stolen Ink" by Emily Lloyd-Jones (retelling of "The Purloined Letter" by Edgar Allan Poe) in the anthology HIS HIDEOUS HEART, edited by Dahlia Adler LEGENDBORN by Tracy DeonnModern-day Arthurian retelling. Contains a two-person heist partway through. THE WEIGHT OF THE STARS by K. AncrumSapphic romance: A girl yearns to travel the stars but thinks she must be content with her responsibilities on Earth. THE WOLF OF OREN-YARO by K.S. VillosoA queen journeys to meet her estranged husband and then has to flee from assassins in a strange land.
At some point in our lives, we have all found ourselves waiting for something. Whether it's waiting for that job offer, that special someone to come into our lives or that next big opportunity. It's human nature to wait. But have you ever stopped to consider how much time you're spending waiting? This week, on Small Beginnings with Sara, God has been bringing my attention to the concept of time and reminding me that He is the ultimate Time Keeper. It's amazing how our behavior changes when we realize the time clock is ticking down. Jesus wanted His disciples to live with a sense of urgency. There was a mission to accomplish. There was a message to be shared. There were disciples to be made, all while the time clock was ticking down. His final words to His disciples and to us are focused to live ON MISSION—His mission.

Attraction audio recorded on July 14, 2022. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode we ride Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. There are no age or height requirements for this attraction and the guide map describes the ride saying, “Ride this mass transit system of the future.” The thrill level describes the PeopleMover attraction as a slow ride. We covered the PeopleMover way back in episode 26, but here are 5 more fast facts about the ride. 1. When we originally covered the ride back in 2017, it was sponsored by Alamo. The ride is now listed as being Presented by Enterprise. 2. On July 1, 2022, the ride received a brand new Narration track, replacing the previous narration done by Mike Brassell. 3. If you listen closely, the new Narration features several tributes to past Tomorrowland attractions including If You Had WIngs, The Time Keeper and the 1975 version of The Carousel of Progress. 4. The three note chime that proceeds announcements during the ride has returned. It hadn't been heard since 2009. 5. The new narration also references, for the first time, the new Tron Lightcyle Run attraction. Let's take a ride on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover.
